Periodic Cyclic Homology and Equivariant Gerbes

This paper is our first step in establishing a de Rham model for equivariant twisted $K$-theory using machinery from noncommutative geometry. Let $G$ be a compact Lie group, $M$ a compact manifold on which $G$ acts smoothly. For any $α\in H^3_G (M, {\mathbb Z})$ we introduce a notion of localized equivariant twisted cohomology $H^\bullet ({\barΩ}^\bullet (M, G, L)_g, d^α_{G^g})$, indexed by $g\in G$. We prove that there exists a natural family of chain maps, indexed by $g\in G$, inducing a family of morphisms from the equivariant periodic cyclic homology $HP^G_\bullet ( C^\infty (M, α) )$, where $C^\infty (M, α)$ is a certain smooth algebra constructed from an equivariant bundle gerbe defined by $α\in H^3_G (M,{\mathbb Z} )$, to $H^\bullet ( {\barΩ}^\bullet (M, G, L)_g, d^α_{G^g})$. We formulate a conjecture of Atiyah-Hirzebruch type theorem for equivariant twisted $K$-theory.

Equivalence of Fell Systems and their Reduced C*-Algebras

This paper is aimed at investigating links between Fell bundles over Morita equivalent groupoids and their corresponding reduced C*-algebras. Mainly, we review the notion of Fell pairs over a Morita equivalence of groupoids, and give the analogue of the Renault's Equivalence Theorem for the reduced C*-algebras of equivalent Fell systems. Eventually, we will use this theorem to connect the reduced C*-algebra of an S^1-central groupoid extension to that of its associated Dixmier-Douady bundle.

The coarse Baum--Connes conjecture and groupoids II

Given a (not necessarily discrete) proper metric space $M$ with bounded geometry, we define a groupoid $G(M)$. We show that the coarse Baum--Connes conjecture with coefficients, which states that the assembly map with coefficients for G(M) is an isomorphism, is hereditary by taking closed subspaces.

The ring structure for equivariant twisted K-theory

We prove, under some mild conditions, that the equivariant twisted K-theory group of a crossed module admits a ring structure if the twisting 2-cocycle is 2-multiplicative. We also give an explicit construction of the transgression map $T_1: H^*(Γ;A) \to H^{*-1}((N\rtimes Γ;A)$ for any crossed module $N\to Γ$ and prove that any element in the image is $\infty$-multiplicative. As a consequence, we prove that, under some mild conditions, for a crossed module $N \to \gm$ and any $e \in \check{Z}^3(Γ;S^1)$, that the equivariant twisted K-theory group $K^*_{e,Γ}(N)$ admits a ring structure. As an application, we prove that for a compact, connected and simply connected Lie group G, the equivariant twisted K-theory group $K_{[c], G}^* (G)$ is endowed with a canonical ring structure $K^{i+d}_{[c],G}(G)\otimes K^{j+d}_{[c],G}(G)\to K^{i+j+d}_{[c], G}(G)$, where $d=dim G$ and $[c]\in H^2(G\rtimes G;S^1)$.

Chern-Weil map for principal bundles over groupoids

The theory of principal $G$-bundles over a Lie groupoid is an important one, unifying the various types of principal $G$-bundles, including those over manifolds, those over orbifolds, as well as equivariant principal $G$-bundles. In this paper, we study the differential geometry of these objects, including connections and holonomy maps. We also introduce a Chern-Weil map for these principal bundles and prove that the characteristic classes obtained coincide with the universal characteristic classes. As an application, we recover the equivariant Chern-Weil map of Bott-Tu. We also obtain an explicit chain map between the Weil model and the simplicial model of equivariant cohomology which reduces to the Bott-Shulman map $S({\mathfrak g}^*)^G \to H^*(BG)$ when the manifold is a point.

Chern character for twisted K-theory of orbifolds

For an orbifold X and $α\in H^3(X, Z)$, we introduce the twisted cohomology $H^*_c(X, α)$ and prove that the Connes-Chern character establishes an isomorphism between the twisted K-groups $K_α^* (X) \otimes C$ and twisted cohomology $H^*_c(X, α)$. This theorem, on the one hand, generalizes a classical result of Baum-Connes, Brylinski-Nistor, and others, that if X is an orbifold then the Chern character establishes an isomorphism between the K-groups of X tensored with C, and the compactly-supported cohomology of the inertia orbifold. On the other hand, it also generalizes a recent result of Adem-Ruan regarding the Chern character isomorphism of twisted orbifold K-theory when the orbifold is a global quotient by a finite group and the twist is a special torsion class, as well as Mathai-Stevenson's theorem regarding the Chern character isomorphism of twisted K-theory of a compact manifold.

Twisted K-theory of differentiable stacks

In this paper, we develop twisted $K$-theory for stacks, where the twisted class is given by an $S^1$-gerbe over the stack. General properties, including the Mayer-Vietoris property, Bott periodicity, and the product structure $K^i_α\otimes K^j_β\to K^{i+j}_{α+β}$ are derived. Our approach provides a uniform framework for studying various twisted $K$-theories including the usual twisted $K$-theory of topological spaces, twisted equivariant $K$-theory, and the twisted $K$-theory of orbifolds. We also present a Fredholm picture, and discuss the conditions under which twisted $K$-groups can be expressed by so-called "twisted vector bundles". Our approach is to work on presentations of stacks, namely \emph{groupoids}, and relies heavily on the machinery of $K$-theory ($KK$-theory) of $C^*$-algebras.

Non-Hausdorff groupoids, proper actions and K-theory

Let G be a (not necessarily Hausdorff) locally compact groupoid. We introduce a notion of properness for G, which is invariant under Morita-equivalence. We show that any generalized morphism between two locally compact groupoids which satisfies some properness conditions induces a C*-correspondence from $C*_r(G_1)$ to $C^*_r(G_2)$, and thus two Morita equivalent groupoids have Morita-equivalent $C^*$-algebras.

Groupoid cohomology and extensions

We show that Haefliger's cohomology for etale groupoids, Moore's cohomology for locally compact groups and the Brauer group of a locally compact groupoid are all particular cases of sheaf (or Cech) cohomology for topological simplicial spaces.
