On the Stability Domain of Systems of Three Arbitrary Charges

We present results on the stability of quantum systems consisting of a negative charge $-q_1$ with mass $m_{1}$ and two positive charges $q_2$ and $q_3$, with masses $m_{2}$ and $m_{3}$, respectively. We show that, for given masses $m_{i}$, each instability domain is convex in the plane of the variables $(q_{1}/q_{2}, q_{1}/q_{3})$. A new proof is given of the instability of muonic ions $(α, p, μ^-)$. We then study stability in some critical regimes where $q_3\ll q_2$: stability is sometimes restricted to large values of some mass ratios; the behaviour of the stability frontier is established to leading order in $q_3/q_2$. Finally we present some conjectures about the shape of the stability domain, both for given masses and varying charges, and for given charges and varying masses.

Isospin Mass Splittings of Baryons in Potential Models

We discuss the isospin-breaking mass differences among baryons, with particular attention in the charm sector to the $Σ_c^{+}-Σ_c^0$, $Σ_c^{++}-Σ_c^0$, and $Ξ_c^+-Ξ_c^0$ splittings. Simple potential models cannot accommodate the trend of the available data on charmed baryons. More precise measurements would offer the possibility of testing how well potential models describe the non-perturbative limit of QCD.

Weakly-Bound Three-Body Systems with No Bound Subsystems

We investigate the domain of coupling constants which achieve binding for a 3-body system, while none of the 2-body subsystems is bound. We derive some general properties of the shape of the domain, and rigorous upper bounds on its size, using a Hall--Post decomposition of the Hamiltonian. Numerical illustrations are provided in the case of a Yukawa potential, using a simple variational method.

Spacings of Quarkonium Levels with the Same Principal Quantum Number

The spacings between bound-state levels of the Schrödinger equation with the same principal quantum number $N$ but orbital angular momenta $\ell$ differing by unity are found to be nearly equal for a wide range of power potentials $V = λr^ν$, with $E_{N \ell} \approx F(ν, N) - G(ν,N) \ell$. Semiclassical approximations are in accord with this behavior. The result is applied to estimates of masses for quarkonium levels which have not yet been observed, including the 2P $c \bar c$ states and the 1D $b \bar b$ states.

$Ω_c$ and other charmed baryons revisited

The mass of the $Ω^0_c$ baryon with quark content (ssc) is computed in a potential model whose parameters have been determined in 1981 by fitting the spectrum of heavy mesons. It is found in perfect agreement with a recent measurement at the CERN hyperon-beam experiment. The spectroscopy of other charmed baryons in potential models is briefly reviewed.

Hadrons with Two Heavy Quarks

We review the spectroscopy and some properties of hadrons containing two charmed quarks, or more generally, two heavy quarks. This includes heavy baryons such as $(bcu)$, and possible exotic multiquark states.

Antiproton Induced Reactions

The various aspects of antiproton physics are shortly reviewed, and its relevance for the possible discovery of new particles and effects is pointed out. Then a survey of the nucleon-antinucleon interactions is given. In the nucleon-antinucleon annihilations, there is a big amount of experimental data that call for theoretical explanation. Importance of specific spin and isospin channels for our understanding of antiproton physics is stressed.

Stability of the Hydrogen and Hydrogen-like Molecules

We present a simple proof of the stability of the hydrogen molecule $(M^+M^+m^-m^-)$. It does not rely on the proton-to-electron mass ratio $M/m$ being very large, and actually holds for arbitrary values of $M/m$. Some asymmetric molecules of the type $(m_1^+m_2^+m_3^-m_4^-)$ are also stable. Possible applications to molecules containing antiparticles and to exotic hadrons in the quark model are briefly outlined. Revtex Version 3.0, 4 Figures available on request by Fax or Mail.
