Quasi-1D ultracold rigid-rotor collisions : reactive and non-reactive cases

We study polar alkali dimer scattering in a quasi-1D geometry for both reactive and non-reactive species. Elastic and reactive rates are computed as a function of the amplitude of a static electric field within a purely long-range model with suitable boundary conditions at shorter range. We describe the diatomic molecules as rigid rotors and results are compared to the fixed-dipole approximation. We show in particular that for molecules with a sufficiently strong induced dipole moment oriented perpendicular to the trap axis, the long-range repulsive interaction leads to the suppression of short-range processes. Such shielding effect occurs for both reactive and non-reactive molecules, preventing two-body reactions as well as losses due to "sticky processes" [Phys. Rev. A 85, 062712 (2012)] from occurring. The present results demonstrate the possibility to suppress loss rates in current ultracold molecule experiments using 1D confinement.

Application of the spectral element method to the solution of the multichannel Schrödinger equation

We apply the spectral element method to the determination of scattering and bound states of the multichannel Schrödinger equation. In our approach the reaction coordinate is discretized on a grid of points whereas the internal coordinates are described by either purely diabatic or locally diabatic (diabatic-by-sector) bases. Bound levels and scattering matrix elements are determined with spectral accuracy using relatively small numbers of points. The scattering problem is cast as a linear system solved using state-of-the-art sparse matrix non iterative packages. Boundary conditions can be imposed so to compute a single column of the matrix solution. A comparison with log-derivative propagators customarily used in molecular physics is performed. The same discretization scheme can also be applied to bound levels that are computed using direct scalable sparse-matrix solvers.

Influence of the energy-band structure on ultracold reactive processes in lattices

We study theoretically ultracold collisions in quasi one-dimensional optical traps for bosonic and fermionic reactive molecules in the presence of a periodic potential along the trap axis. Elastic, reactive, and umklapp processes due to non-conservation of the center of mass motion are investigated for parameters of relevant experimental interest. The model naturally keeps into account the effect of excited energy bands and is particularly suited for being adapted to rigorous close-coupled calculations. Our formalism shows that a correct derivation of the parameters in tight-binding effective models must include the strong momentum dependence of the coupling constant we predict even for deep lattices.

Polar molecule reactive collisions in quasi-1D systems

We study polar molecule scattering in quasi-one-dimensional geometries. Elastic and reactive collision rates are computed as a function of collision energy and electric dipole moment for different confinement strengths. The numerical results are interpreted in terms of first order scattering and of adiabatic models. Universal dipolar scattering is also discussed. Our results are relevant to experiments where control of the collision dynamics through one dimensional confinement and an applied electric field is envisioned.

Landau quantization effects in ultracold atom-ion collisions

We study ultracold atom-ion collisions in the presence of an external magnetic field. At low collision energy the field can drastically modify the translational motion of the ion, which follows quantized cyclotron orbits. We present a rigorous theoretical approach for the calculation of quantum scattering amplitudes in these conditions. Collisions in different magnetic field regimes, identified by the size of the cyclotron radius with respect to the range of the interaction potential, are investigated. Our results are important in cases where use of a magnetic field to control the atom-ion collision dynamics is envisioned.

Kinetics and Dynamics of the S(^1D_2) + H_2 \to SH + H Reaction at Very Low Temperatures and Collision Energies

We report combined studies on the prototypical S(^1D_2) + H2 insertion reaction. Kinetics and crossed-beam experiments are performed in experimental conditions approaching the cold energy regime, yielding absolute rate coefficients down to 5.8 K and relative integral cross sections to collision energies as low as 0.68 meV. They are supported by quantum calculations on a potential energy surface treating long range interactions accurately. All results are consistent and the excitation function behavior is explained in terms of the cumulative contribution of various partial waves.

Interactions and dynamics in Li + Li_2 ultracold collisions

A potential energy surface for the lowest quartet electronic state of lithium trimer is developed and used to study spin-polarized Li + Li_2 collisions at ultralow kinetic energies. The potential energy surface allows barrierless atom exchange reactions. Elastic and inelastic cross sections are calculated for collisions involving a variety of rovibrational states of Li_2. Inelastic collisions are responsible for trap loss in molecule production experiments. Isotope effects and the sensitivity of the results to details of the potential energy surface are investigated. It is found that for vibrationally excited states the cross sections are only quite weakly dependent on details of the potential energy surface.

Ultracold collisions involving heteronuclear alkali metal dimers

We have carried out the first quantum dynamics calculations on ultracold atom-diatom collisions in isotopic mixtures. The systems studied are spin-polarized 7Li + 6Li7Li, 7Li + 6Li2, 6Li + 6Li7Li and 6Li + 7Li2. Reactive scattering can occur for the first two systems even when the molecules are in their ground rovibrational states, but is slower than vibrational relaxation in homonuclear systems. Implications for sympathetic cooling of heteronuclear molecules are discussed.

Ultracold Li + Li_2 collisions: bosonic and fermionic cases

We have carried out quantum dynamical calculations of vibrational quenching in Li + Li_2 collisions for both bosonic 7Li and fermionic 6Li. These are the first ever such calculations involving fermionic atoms. We find that for the low initial vibrational states considered here (v less than or equal to 3), the quenching rates are not suppressed for fermionic atoms. This contrasts with the situation found experimentally for molecules formed via Feshbach resonances in very high vibrational states.

Quantum Dynamics of Ultracold Na + Na_2 collisions

Ultracold collisions between spin-polarized Na atoms and vibrationally excited Na_2 molecules are investigated theoretically, using both an inelastic formalism (neglecting atom exchange channels) and a reactive formalism (including atom exchange). Calculations are carried out on both pairwise additive and non-additive potential energy surfaces for the quartet electronic state. In both inelastic and reactive calculations, the Wigner threshold laws are followed for energies below 10^{-6} K. It is found that vibrational relaxation processes dominate elastic processes for temperatures below 10^{-3} - 10^{-4} K. For temperatures below 10^{-5} K, the rate coefficients for vibrational relaxation (v = 1 -> 0) from the full calculation are 4.8 x 10^{-11} and 5.2 x 10^{-10} cm^3 s^-1 for the additive and non-additive potentials respectively.
