Existence of Anisotropic Spin Fluctuations at Low Temperature in the Normal Phase of the Superconducting Ferromagnet UCoGe

Thermal conductivity measurements have been performed on the superconducting ferromagnet UCoGe down to very low temperature and under magnetic field. In addition to the electronic quasiparticle thermal conductivity, additional contributions to the thermal transport are detected: they are sensitive to the amplitude and direction of the magnetic field, and at low temperature, they display a strong anisotropy with the heat current direction. We identify these contributions as arising from magnetic fluctuations. Detection of such fluctuations on the thermal transport in 3D weak ferromagnets is very rare if not unique, and pledges for a strongly itinerant character of the magnetism of UCoGe.

Field-induced Phenomena in Ferromagnetic Superconductors UCoGe and URhGe

We review our recent studies on ferromagnetic superconductors, UGe2, URhGe and UCoGe, where the spin-triplet state with the so-called equal spin pairing is realized. We focus on experimental results of URhGe and UCoGe in which the superconductivity occurs already at ambient pressure. The huge upper critical field Hc2 on UCoGe for the field along the hard magnetization axis (b-axis) is confirmed by the AC susceptibility measurements by the fine tuning of field angle. Contrary to the huge Hc2 along the hard-magnetization axis, Hc2 along the easy-magnetization axis (c-axis) is relatively small in value. However, the initial slope of Hc2, namely dHc2/dT (H -> 0) both in UCoGe and in URhGe indicates the large value, which can be explained by the magnetic domain effect detected in the magnetization measurements. The specific heat measurements using a high quality single crystal of UCoGe demonstrate the bulk superconductivity, which is extended under magnetic field for the field along c-axis.

Upper critical field of CeCoIn5

We present a detailed analysis of the upper critical field for CeCoIn5 under high pressure. We show that, consistently with other measurements, this system shows a decoupling between maximum of the superconducting transition temperature Tc and maximum pairing strength. This puts forward CeCoIn5 as an important paradigm for this class of unconventional, strongly correlated superconductors.

Behavior of the Quantum Critical Point and the Fermi-liquid Domain in the Heavy Fermion Superconductor CeCoIn5 studied by resistivity

We report detailed very low temperature resistivity measurements on the heavy fermion compounds Ce_{1-x}La_{x}CoIn5 (x=0 and x=0.01), with current applied in two crystallographic directions [100] (basal plane) and [001] (perpendicular to the basal plane) under magnetic field applied in the [001] or [011] direction. We found a Fermi liquid (ρ\propto T^{2}) ground state, in all cases, for fields above the superconducting upper critical field. We discuss the possible location of a field induced quantum critical point with respect to Hc2(0), and compare our measurements with the previous reports in order to give a clear picture of the experimental status on this long debated issue.

Competition and/or Coexistence of Antiferromagnetism and Superconductivity in CeRhIn$_5$ and CeCoIn$_5$

The Ce compounds CeCoIn$_5$ and CeRhIn$_5$ are ideal model systems to study the competition of antiferromagnetism (AF) and superconductivity (SC). Here we discuss the pressure--temperature and magnetic field phase diagrams of both compounds. In CeRhIn$_5$ the interesting observation is that in zero magnetic field a coexistence AF+SC phase exist inside the AF phase below the critical pressure $p_{\rm c}^\star \approx 2$ GPa. Above $p_{\rm c}^\star$ AF is suppressed in zero field but can be re-induced by applying a magnetic field. The collapse of AF under pressure coincides with the abrupt change of the Fermi surface. In CeCoIn$_5$ a new phase appears at low temperatures and high magnetic field (LTHF) which vanishes at the upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$. In both compounds the paramagnetic pair breaking effect dominates at low temperature. We discuss the evolution of the upper critical field under high pressure of both compounds and propose a simple picture of the glue of reentrant magnetism to the upper critical field in order to explain the interplay of antiferromagnetic order and superconductivity.

The quantum critical point in CeRhIn_5: a resistivity study

The pressure--temperature phase diagram of CeRhIn_5 has been studied under high magnetic field by resistivity measurements. Clear signatures of a quantum critical point has been found at a critical pressure of p_c = 2.5 GPa. The field induced magnetic state in the superconducting state is stable up to the highest field. At p_c the antiferromagnetic ground-state under high magnetic field collapses very rapidly. Clear signatures of p_c are the strong enhancement of the resistivity in the normal state and of the inelastic scattering term. No clear T2 temperature dependence could be found for pressures above T_c. From the analysis of the upper critical field within a strong coupling model we present the pressure dependence of the coupling parameter lambda and the gyromagnetic ratio g. No signatures of a spatially modulated order parameter could be evidenced. A detailed comparison with the magnetic field--temperature phase diagram of CeCoIn_5 is given. The comparison between CeRhIn_5 and CeCoIn_5 points out the importance to take into account the field dependence of the effective mass in the calculation of the superconducting upper critical field H_c2. It suggests also that when the magnetic critical field H_(0) becomes lower than H_c2 (0)$, the persistence of a superconducting pseudo-gap may stick the antiferromagnetism to H_c2 (0).

Superconducting PrOs4Sb12: a thermal conductivity study

The superconducting state of the heavy fermion PrOs4Sb12 is studied by heat transport measure- ments on a highly homogeneous single crystal exhibiting only one transition peak in the specific heat. The field and temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity confirm multiband super- conductivity and point to fully open gaps on the whole Fermi surface.

Multiband superconductivity in the heavy fermion compound PrOs4Sb12

The thermal conductivity of the heavy fermion superconductor PrOs4Sb12 was measured down to Tc/40 throughout the vortex state. At lowest temperatures and for magnetic fields H ~ 0.07Hc2, already 40% of the normal state thermal conductivity is restored. This behaviour (similar to that observed in MgB2) is a clear signature of multiband superconductivity in this compound.
