Global finite energy solutions of the Maxwell-scalar field system on the Einstein cylinder

We prove the existence and uniqueness of global finite energy solutions of the Maxwell-scalar field system in Lorenz gauge on the Einstein cylinder. Our method is a combination of a conformal patching argument, the finite energy existence theorem in Lorenz gauge on Minkowski space of Selberg and Tesfahun, a careful localization of finite energy data, and null form estimates of Foschi-Klainerman type. Although we prove that the energy-carrying components of the solution maintain regularity, due to the incompleteness of the null structure in Lorenz gauge and the nature of our foliation-change arguments we find small losses of regularity in both the scalar field and the potential.

Conformal Scattering of Maxwell Potentials

We construct a complete conformal scattering theory for finite energy Maxwell potentials on a class of curved, asymptotically flat spacetimes with prescribed smoothness of null infinity and a non-zero ADM mass. In order to define the full set of scattering data, we construct a Lorenz-like gauge which makes the field equations hyperbolic and non-singular up to null infinity, and reduces to an intrinsically solvable ODE on null infinity. We develop a method to solve the characteristic Cauchy problem from this scattering data based on a theorem of Hörmander. In the case of Minkowski space, we further investigate an alternative formulation of the scattering theory by using the Morawetz vector field instead of the usual timelike Killing vector field.

Peeling at extreme black hole horizons

The starting point of this work was an intriguing similarity between the behaviour of fields near a degenerate horizon and near the infinity of an asymptotically flat spacetime, as revealed by the scattering theory for Dirac fields in the ``exterior'' region of the extreme Kerr - de Sitter black hole, developed by one of the authors (JB). However, in that situation, the comparison was somewhat clouded by some of the analytical techniques used in intermediate steps of the proof. The aim of the present work is to clarify the comparison further by studying instead the peeling behaviour of solutions to the wave equation at an extremal horizon. We focus first on the extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole, for which the Couch-Torrence inversion (a global conformal isometry that exchanges the horizon and infinity) makes the analogy explicit. Then, we explore more general spherically symmetric situations using the Couch-Torrence inversion outside of its natural context.

Geometry of Vaidya spacetimes

We investigate the geometrical structure of Vaidya's spacetime in the case of a white hole with decreasing mass, stabilising to a black hole in finite or infinite time or evaporating completely. Our approach relies on a detailed analysis of the ordinary differential equation describing the incoming principal null geodesics, among which are the generators of the past horizon. We devote special attention to the case of a complete evaporation in infinite time and establish the existence of an asymptotic light-like singularity of the conformal curvature, touching both the past space-like singularity and future time-like infinity. This singularity is present independently of the decay rate of the mass. We derive an explicit formula that relates directly the strength of this null singularity to the asymptotic behaviour of the mass function.

Peeling on Kerr spacetime~:linear and non linear scalar fields

We study the peeling on Kerr spacetime for fields satisfying conformally invariant linear and nonlinear scalar wave equations. We follow an approach initiated by L.J. Mason and the first author for the Schwarzschild metric, based on a Penrose compactification and energy estimates. This approach provides a definition of the peeling at all orders in terms of Sobolev regularity near ${\mathscr I}$ instead of ${\cal C}^k$ regularity at ${\mathscr I}$, allowing to characterise completely and without loss the classes of initial data ensuring a certain order of peeling at ${\mathscr I}$. This paper extends the construction to the Kerr metric, confirms the validity and optimality of the flat spacetime model (in the sense that the same regularity and fall-off assumptions on the data guarantee the peeling behaviour in flat spacetime and on the Kerr metric) and does so for the first time for a nonlinear equation. Our results are local near spacelike infinity and are valid for all values of the angular momentum of the spacetime, including for fast Kerr metrics.

Conservation laws and evolution schemes in geodesic, hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic flows

Carter and Lichnerowicz have established that barotropic fluid flows are conformally geodesic and obey Hamilton's principle. This variational approach can accommodate neutral, or charged and poorly conducting, fluids. We show that, unlike what has been previously thought, this approach can also accommodate perfectly conducting magnetofluids, via the Bekenstein-Oron description of ideal magnetohydrodynamics. When Noether symmetries associated with Killing vectors or tensors are present in geodesic flows, they lead to constants of motion polynomial in the momenta. We generalize these concepts to hydrodynamic flows. Moreover, the Hamiltonian descriptions of ideal magnetohydrodynamics allow one to cast the evolution equations into a hyperbolic form useful for evolving rotating or binary compact objects with magnetic fields in numerical general relativity. Conserved circulation laws, such as those of Kelvin, Alfvén and Bekenstein-Oron, emerge simply as special cases of the Poincaré-Cartan integral invariant of Hamiltonian systems. We use this approach to obtain an extension of Kelvin's theorem to baroclinic (non-isentropic) fluids, based on a temperature-dependent time parameter. We further extend this result to perfectly or poorly conducting baroclinic magnetoflows. Finally, in the barotropic case, such magnetoflows are shown to also be geodesic, albeit in a Finsler (rather than Riemann) space.

Conformal scattering on the Schwarzschild metric

We show that existing decay results for scalar fields on the Schwarzschild metric are sufficient to obtain a conformal scattering theory. Then we re-interpret this as an analytic scattering theory defined in terms of wave operators, with an explicit comparison dynamics associated with the principal null geodesic congruences. The case of the Kerr metric is also discussed.

The conformal approach to asymptotic analysis

This essay was written as an extended version of a talk given at a conference in Strasbourg on "Riemann, Einstein and geometry", organized by Athanase Papadopoulos in September 2014. Its aim is to present Roger Penrose's approach to asymptotic analysis in general relativity, which is based on conformal geometric techniques, focusing on historical and recent aspects of two specialized topics~: conformal scattering and peeling.

Superradiance on the Reissner-Nordstrom metric

In this article, we study the superradiance of charged scalar fields on the sub-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom metric, a mechanism by which such fields can extract energy from a static spherically symmetric charged black hole. A geometrical way of measuring the amount of energy extracted is proposed. Then we investigate the question numerically. The toy-model and the numerical methods used in our simulations are presented and the problem of long time measurement of the outgoing energy flux is discussed. We provide a numerical example of a field exhibiting a behaviour analogous to the Penrose process: an incoming wave packet which splits, as it approaches the black hole, into an incoming part with negative energy and an outgoing part with more energy than the initial incoming one. We also show another type of superradiant solution for which the energy extraction is more important. Hyperradiant behaviour is not observed, which is an indication that the Reissner-Nordstrom metric is linearly stable in the sub-extremal case.

A decay estimate for a wave equation with trapping and a complex potential

In this brief note, we consider a wave equation that has both trapping and a complex potential. For this problem, we prove a uniform bound on the energy and a Morawetz (or integrated local energy decay) estimate. The equation is a model problem for certain scalar equations appearing in the Maxwell and linearised Einstein systems on the exterior of a rotating black hole.

Peeling of Dirac and Maxwell fields on a Schwarzschild background

We study the peeling of Dirac and Maxwell fields on a Schwarzschild background following the approach developed by the authors in Mason-Nicolas 2009 for the wave equation. The method combines a conformal compactification with vector field techniques in order to work out the optimal space of initial data for a given transverse regularity of the rescaled field across null infinity. The results show that analogous decay and regularity assumptions in Minkowski and in Schwarzschild produce the same regularity across null infinity. The results are valid also for the classes of asymptotically simple spacetimes constructed by Corvino-Schoen / Chrusciel-Delay.

The characteristic Cauchy problem for Dirac fields on curved backgrounds

On arbitrary spacetimes, we study the characteristic Cauchy problem for Dirac fields on a light-cone. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions in the future of the light-cone inside a geodesically convex neighbourhood of the vertex. This is done for data in $L^2$ and we give an explicit definition of the space of data on the light-cone producing a solution in $H^1$. The method is based on energy estimates following L. Hörmander (J.F.A. 1990). The data for the characteristic Cauchy problem are only a half of the field, the other half is recovered from the characteristic data by integration of the constraints, consisting of the restriction of the Dirac equation to the cone. A precise analysis of the dynamics of light rays near the vertex of the cone is done in order to understand the integrability of the constraints; for this, the Geroch-Held-Penrose formalism is used.

Regularity at space-like and null infinity

We extend Penrose's peeling model for the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to the scalar wave equation at null infinity on asymptotically flat backgrounds, which is well understood for flat space-time, to Schwarzschild and the asymptotically simple space-times of Corvino-Schoen/Chrusciel-Delay. We combine conformal techniques and vector field methods: a naive adaptation of the ``Morawetz vector field'' to a conformal rescaling of the Schwarzschild metric yields a complete scattering theory on Corvino-Schoen/Chrusciel-Delay space-times. A good classification of solutions that peel arises from the use of a null vector field that is transverse to null infinity to raise the regularity in the estimates. We obtain a new characterization of solutions admitting a peeling at a given order that is valid for both Schwarzschild and Minkowski space-times. On flat space-time, this allows large classes of solutions than the characterizations used since Penrose's work. Our results establish the validity of the peeling model at all orders for the scalar wave equation on the Schwarzschild metric and on the corresponding Corvino-Schoen/Chrusciel-Delay space-times.

On Lars Hörmander's remark on the characteristic Cauchy problem

We extend the results of a work by L. Hörmander in 1990 concerning the resolution of the characteristic Cauchy problem for second order wave equations with regular first order potentials. The geometrical background of this work was a spatially compact spacetime with smooth metric. The initial data surface was spacelike or null at each point and merely Lipschitz. We lower the regularity hypotheses on the metric and potential and obtain similar results. The Cauchy problem for a spacelike initial data surface is solved for a Lipschitz metric and coefficients of the first order potential that are $L^\infty_\mathrm{loc}$, with the same finite energy solution space as in the smooth case. We also solve the fully characteristic Cauchy problem with very slightly more regular metric and potential, namely a ${\cal C}^1$ metric and a potential with continuous first order terms and locally $L^\infty$ coefficients for the terms of order 0.
