Bergman bundles and applications to the geometry of compact complex manifolds

We introduce the concept of Bergman bundle attached to a hermitian manifold X, assuming the manifold X to be compact - although the results are local for a large part. The Bergman bundle is some sort of infinite dimensional very ample Hilbert bundle whose fibers are isomorphic to the standard L${}^2$ Hardy space on the complex unit ball; however the bundle is locally trivial only in the real analytic category, and its complex structure is strongly twisted. We compute the Chern curvature of the Bergman bundle, and show that it is strictly positive. As a potential application, we investigate a long standing and still unsolved conjecture of Siu on the invariance of plurigenera in the general situation of polarized families of compact K{ä}hler manifolds.

Monge-Ampère functionals for the curvature tensor of a holomorphic vector bundle

Let $E$ be a holomorphic vector bundle on a projective manifold $X$ such that $\det E$ is ample. We introduce three functionals $Φ_P$ related to Griffiths, Nakano and dual Nakano positivity respectively. They can be used to define new concepts of volume for the vector bundle $E$, by means of generalized Monge-Ampère integrals of $Φ_P(Θ_{E,h})$, where $Θ_{E,h}$ is the Chern curvature tensor of $(E,h)$. These volumes are shown to satisfy optimal Chern class inequalities. We also prove that the functionals $Φ_P$ give rise in a natural way to elliptic differential systems of Hermitian-Yang-Mills type for the curvature, in such a way that the related $P$-positivity threshold of $E\otimes(\det E)^t$, where $t>-1/{\rm rank} E$, can possibly be investigated by studying the infimum of exponents $t$ for which the Yang-Mills differential system has a solution.

On the existence of logarithmic and orbifold jet differentials

We introduce the concept of directed orbifold, namely triples (X, V, D) formed by a directed algebraic or analytic variety (X, V), and a ramification divisor D, where V is a coherent subsheaf of the tangent bundle TX. In this context, we introduce an algebra of orbifold jet differentials and their sections. These jet sections can be seen as algebraic differential operators acting on germs of curves, with meromorphic coefficients, whose poles are supported by D and multiplicities are bounded by the ramification indices of the components of D. We estimate precisely the curvature tensor of the corresponding directed structure V[D] in the general orbifold case-with a special attention to the compact case D = 0 and to the logarithmic situation where the ramification indices are infinite. Using holomorphic Morse inequalities on the tautological line bundle of the projectivized orbifold Green-Griffiths bundle, we finally obtain effective sufficient conditions for the existence of global orbifold jet differentials.

On the locus of higher order jets of entire curves in complex projective varieties

For a given complex projective variety, the existence of entire curves is strongly constrained by the positivity properties of the cotangent bundle. The Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture stipulates that entire curves drawn on a variety of general type should all be contained in a proper algebraic subvariety. We present here new results on the existence of differential equations that strongly restrain the locus of entire curves in the general context of foliated or directed varieties, under appropriate positivity conditions.

Hermitian-Yang-Mills approach to the conjecture of Griffiths on the positivity of ample vector bundles

Given a vector bundle of arbitrary rank with ample determinant line bundle on a projective manifold, we propose a new elliptic system of differential equations of Hermitian-Yang-Mills type for the curvature tensor. The system is designed so that solutions provide Hermitian metrics with positive curvature in the sense of Griffiths-and even in the dual Nakano sense. As a consequence, if an existence result could be obtained for every ample vector bundle, the Griffiths conjecture on the equivalence between ampleness and positivity of vector bundles would be settled.

Recent results on the Kobayashi and Green-Griffiths-Lang conjectures

The study of entire holomorphic curves contained in projective algebraic varieties is intimately related to fascinating questions of geometry and number theory -- especially through the concepts of curvature and positivity which are central themes in Kodaira's contributions to mathematics. The aim of these lectures is to present recent results concerning the geometric side of the problem. The Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture stipulates that for every projective variety $X$ of general type over~${\mathbb C}$, there exists a proper algebraic subvariety $Y$ of $X$ containing all non constant entire curves $f:{\mathbb C}\to X$. Using the formalism of directed varieties and jet bundles, we show that this assertion holds true in case $X$ satisfies a strong general type condition that is related to a certain jet-semistability property of the tangent bundle $T\_X$. It is possible to exploit similar techniques to investigate a famous conjecture of Shoshichi Kobayashi (1970), according to which a generic algebraic hypersurface of dimension $n$ and of sufficiently large degree $d\ge d\_n$ in the complex projective space $\bP^{n+1}$ is hyperbolic: in the early 2000's, Yum-Tong Siu proposed a strategy that led in 2015 to a proof based on a clever use of slanted vector fields on jet spaces, combined with Nevanlinna theory arguments. In 2016, the conjecture has been settled in a different way by Damian Brotbek, making a more direct use of Wronskian differential operators and associated multiplier ideals; shortly afterwards, Ya Deng showed how the proof could be modified to yield an explicit value of $d\_n$. We give here a short proof based on a drastic simplification of their ideas, along with a further improvement of Deng's bound, namely $d\_n=\lfloor\frac{1}{5}(en)^{2n+2}\rfloor$.

Morse cohomology estimates for jet differential operators

We provide detailed holomorphic Morse estimates for the cohomology of sheaves of jet differentials and their dual sheaves. These estimates apply on arbitrary directed varieties, and a special attention has been given to the analysis of the singular situation. As a consequence, we obtain existence results for global jet differentials and global differential operators under positivity conditions for the canonical or anticanonical sheaf of the directedstructure.

Fano manifolds with nef tangent bundles are weakly almost K{ä}hler-Einstein

The goal of this short note is to point out that every Fano manifold with a nef tangent bundle possesses an almost K{ä}hler-Einstein metric, in a weak sense. The technique relies on a regularization theorem for closed positive (1, 1)-currents. We also discuss related semistability questions and Chern inequalities.

Rationally connected manifolds and semipositivity of the Ricci curvature

This work establishes a structure theorem for compact Kähler manifolds with semipositive anticanonical bundle. Up to finite étale cover, it is proved that such manifolds split holomorphically and isometrically as a product of Ricci flat varieties and of rationally connected manifolds. The proof is based on a characterization of rationally connected manifolds through the non existence of certain twisted contravariant tensor products of the tangent bundle, along with a generalized holonomy principle for pseudoeffective line bundles. A crucial ingredient for this is the characterization of uniruledness by the property that the anticanonical bundle is not pseudoeffective.

Precise error estimate of the Brent-McMillan algorithm for the computation of Euler's constant

Brent and McMillan introduced in 1980 a new algorithm for the computation of Euler's constant $γ$, based on the use of the Bessel functions I\_0(x) and K\_0(x). It is the fastest known algorithm for the computation of $γ$. The time complexity can still be improved by evaluating a certain divergent asymptotic expansion up to its minimal term. Brent-McMillan conjectured in 1980 that the error is of the same magnitude as the last computed term, and Brent-Johansson partially proved it in 2015. They also gave some numerical evidence for a more precise estimate of the error term. We find here an explicit expression of that optimal estimate, along with a complete self-contained formal proof and an even more precise error bound.

Extension of holomorphic functions and cohomology classes from non reduced analytic subvarieties

The goal of this survey is to describe some recent results concerning the L 2 extension of holomorphic sections or cohomology classes with values in vector bundles satisfying weak semi-positivity properties. The results presented here are generalized versions of the Ohsawa-Takegoshi extension theorem, and borrow many techniques from the long series of papers by T. Ohsawa. The recent achievement that we want to point out is that the surjectivity property holds true for restriction morphisms to non necessarily reduced subvarieties, provided these are defined as zero varieties of multiplier ideal sheaves. The new idea involved to approach the existence problem is to make use of L 2 approximation in the Bochner-Kodaira technique. The extension results hold under curvature conditions that look pretty optimal. However, a major unsolved problem is to obtain natural (and hopefully best possible) L 2 estimates for the extension in the case of non reduced subvarieties -- the case when Y has singularities or several irreducible components is also a substantial issue.

A general extension theorem for cohomology classes on non reduced analytic spaces

The main purpose of this paper is to generalize the celebrated L${}^2$ extension theorem of Ohsawa-Takegoshi in several directions : the holomorphic sections to extend are taken in a possibly singular hermitian line bundle, the subvariety from which the extension is performed may be non reduced, the ambient manifold is K{ä}hler and holomorphically convex, but not necessarily compact.

Algebraic embeddings of smooth almost complex structures

The goal of this work is to prove an embedding theorem for compact almost complex manifolds into complex algebraic varieties. It is shown that every almost complex structure can be realized by the transverse structure to an algebraic distribution on an affine algebraic variety, namely an algebraic subbundle of the tangent bundle. In fact, there even exist universal embedding spaces for this problem, and their dimensions grow quadratically with respect to the dimension of the almost complex manifold to embed. We give precise variation formulas for the induced almost complex structures and study the related versality conditions. At the end, we discuss the original question raised by F.Bogomolov: can one embed every compact holomorphic manifold as a C infinity smooth subvariety that is transverse to an algebraic foliation on a complex projective algebraic variety?

Extension of holomorphic functions defined on non reduced analytic subvarieties

The goal of this contribution is to investigate L${}^2$ extension properties for holomorphic sections of vector bundles satisfying weak semi-positivity properties. Using techniques borrowed from recent proofs of the Ohsawa-Takegoshi extension theorem, we obtain several new surjectivity results for the restriction morphism to a non necessarily reduced subvariety, provided the latter is defined as the zero variety of a multiplier ideal sheaf. These extension results come with precise L${}^2$ estimates and (probably) optimal curvature conditions.

Towards the Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture

The Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture stipulates that for every projective variety X of general type over C, there exists a proper algebraic subvariety of X containing all non constant entire curves f : C $\rightarrow$ X. Using the formalism of directed varieties, we prove here that this assertion holds true in case X satisfies a strong general type condition that is related to a certain jet-semistability property of the tangent bundle TX . We then give a sufficient criterion for the Kobayashi hyperbolicity of an arbitrary directed variety (X,V). This work is dedicated to the memory of Professor Salah Baouendi.

Proof of the Kobayashi conjecture on the hyperbolicity of very general hypersurfaces

The Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture stipulates that for every projective variety $X$ of general type over ${\mathbb C}$, there exists a proper algebraic subvariety of $X$ containing all non constant entire curves $f:{\mathbb C}\to X$. Using the formalism of directed varieties, we prove here that this assertion holds true in case $X$ satisfies a strong general type condition that is related to a certain jet-semistability property of the tangent bundle $T\_X$. We then use this fact to confirm a long-standing conjecture of Kobayashi (1970), according to which a very general algebraic hypersurface of dimension $n$ and degree at least $2n+2$ in the complex projective space ${\mathbb P}^{n+1}$ is hyperbolic.

On the cohomology of pseudoeffective line bundles

The goal of this survey is to present various results concerning the cohomology of pseudoeffective line bundles on compact K{ä}hler manifolds, and related properties of their multiplier ideal sheaves. In case the curvature is strictly positive, the prototype is the well known Nadel vanishing theorem, which is itself a generalized analytic version of the fundamental Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem of algebraic geometry. We are interested here in the case where the curvature is merely semipositive in the sense of currents, and the base manifold is not necessarily projective. In this situation, one can still obtain interesting information on cohomology, e.g. a Hard Lefschetz theorem with pseudoeffective coefficients, in the form of a surjectivity statement for the Lefschetz map. More recently, Junyan Cao, in his PhD thesis defended in Grenoble, obtained a general K{ä}hler vanishing theorem that depends on the concept of numerical dimension of a given pseudoeffective line bundle. The proof of these results depends in a crucial way on a general approximation result for closed (1,1)-currents, based on the use of Bergman kernels, and the related intersection theory of currents. Another important ingredient is the recent proof by Guan and Zhou of the strong openness conjecture. As an application, we discuss a structure theorem for compact K{ä}hler threefolds without nontrivial subvarieties, following a joint work with F.Campana and M.Verbitsky. We hope that these notes will serve as a useful guide to the more detailed and more technical papers in the literature; in some cases, we provide here substantially simplified proofs and unifying viewpoints.
