Curvature of Co-Links Uncovers Hidden Thematic Layers in the World Wide Web

Beyond the information stored in pages of the World Wide Web, novel types of ``meta-information'' are created when they connect to each other. This information is a collective effect of independent users writing and linking pages, hidden from the casual user. Accessing it and understanding the inter-relation of connectivity and content in the WWW is a challenging problem. We demonstrate here how thematic relationships can be located precisely by looking only at the graph of hyperlinks, gleaning content and context from the Web without having to read what is in the pages. We begin by noting that reciprocal links (co-links) between pages signal a mutual recognition of authors, and then focus on triangles containing such links, since triangles indicate a transitive relation. The importance of triangles is quantified by the clustering coefficient (Watts) which we interpret as a curvature (Gromov,Bridson-Haefliger). This defines a Web-landscape whose connected regions of high curvature characterize a common topic. We show experimentally that reciprocity and curvature, when combined, accurately capture this meta-information for a wide variety of topics. As an example of future directions we analyze the neural network of C. elegans (White, Wood), using the same methods.

Uniqueness of the Invariant Measure for a Stochastic PDE Driven by Degenerate Noise

We consider the stochastic Ginzburg-Landau equation in a bounded domain. We assume the stochastic forcing acts only on high spatial frequencies. The low-lying frequencies are then only connected to this forcing through the non-linear (cubic) term of the Ginzburg-Landau equation. Under these assumptions, we show that the stochastic PDE has a unique invariant measure. The techniques of proof combine a controllability argument for the low-lying frequencies with an infinite dimensional version of the Malliavin calculus to show positivity and regularity of the invariant measure. This then implies the uniqueness of that measure.

Proof of the marginal stability bound for the Swift-Hohenberg equation and related equations

We prove that if the initial condition of the Swift-Hohenberg equation $\partial_t u(x,t)=\bigl(ε^2-(1+\partial_ x^2)^2\bigr) u(x,t) -u^3(x,t)$ is bounded in modulus by $Ce^{-βx}$ as $x\to+\infty $, the solution cannot propagate to the right with a speed greater than $\sup_{0<γ\leβ}γ^{-1}(ε^2+4γ^2+8γ^4).$ This settles a long-standing conjecture about the possible asymptotic propagation speed of the Swift-Hohenberg equation. The proof does not use the maximum principle and is simple enough to generalize easily to other equations. We illustrate this with an example of a modified Ginzburg-Landau equation, where the minimal speed is not determined by the linearization alone.

Nonlinear Stability of Bifurcating Front Solutions for the Taylor-Couette Problem

We consider the Taylor-Couette problem in an infinitely extended cylindrical domain. There exist modulated front solutions which describe the spreading of the stable Taylor vortices into the region of the unstable Couette flow. These transient solutions have the form of a front-like envelope advancing in the laboratory frame and leaving behind the stationary, spatially periodic Taylor vortices. We prove the nonlinear stability of these solutions with respect to small spatially localized perturbations.

Non-linear Stability of Modulated Fronts for the Swift-Hohenberg Equation

We consider front solutions of the Swift-Hohenberg equation $\partial_t u= -(1+\partial_x^2)^2 u +ε^2 u -u^3$. These are traveling waves which leave in their wake a periodic pattern in the laboratory frame. Using renormalization techniques and a decomposition into Bloch waves, we show the non-linear stability of these solutions. It turns out that this problem is closely related to the question of stability of the trivial solution for the model problem $\partial_t u(x,t) = \partial_x^2 u (x,t)+(1+\tanh(x-ct))u(x,t)+u(x,t)^p$ with $p>3$. In particular, we show that the instability of the perturbation ahead of the front is entirely compensated by a diffusive stabilization which sets in once the perturbation has hit the bulk behind the front.

Non-Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics of Strongly Anharmonic Chains of Oscillators

We study the model of a strongly non-linear chain of particles coupled to two heat baths at different temperatures. Our main result is the existence and uniqueness of a stationary state at all temperatures. This result extends those of Eckmann, Pillet, Rey-Bellet to potentials with essentially arbitrary growth at infinity. This extension is possible by introducing a stronger version of Hörmander's theorem for Kolmogorov equations to vector fields with polynomially bounded coefficients on unbounded domains.

Hydrodynamic Lyapunov Modes in Translation Invariant Systems

We study the implications of translation invariance on the tangent dynamics of extended dynamical systems, within a random matrix approximation. In a model system, we show the existence of hydrodynamic modes in the slowly growing part of the Lyapunov spectrum, which are analogous to the hydrodynamic modes discovered numerically by [Dellago, Ch., Posch, H.A., Hoover, W.G., Phys. Rev. E 53, 1485 (1996)]. The hydrodynamic Lyapunov vectors loose the typical random structure and exhibit instead the structure of weakly perturbed coherent long wavelength waves. We show further that the amplitude of the perturbations vanishes in the thermodynamic limit, and that the associated Lyapunov exponents are universal.

Topological Entropy and epsilon-Entropy for Damped Hyperbolic Equations

We study damped hyperbolic equations on the infinite line. We show that on the global attracting set $G$ the $ε$-entropy (per unit length) exists in the topology of $W^{1,\infty}$. We also show that the topological entropy per unit length of $G$ exists. These results are shown using two main techniques: Bounds in bounded domains in position space and for large momenta, and a novel submultiplicativity argument in $W^{1,\infty}$.

Porosities and dimensions of measures

We introduce a concept of porosity for measures and study relations between dimensions and porosities for two classes of measures: measures on $R^n$ which satisfy the doubling condition and strongly porous measures on $R$.

Entropy Production in Non-Linear, Thermally Driven Hamiltonian Systems

We consider a finite chain of non-linear oscillators coupled at its ends to two infinite heat baths which are at different temperatures. Using our earlier results about the existence of a stationary state, we show rigorously that for arbitrary temperature differences and arbitrary couplings, such a system has a unique stationary state. (This extends our earlier results for small temperature differences.) In all these cases, any initial state will converge (at an unknown rate) to the stationary state. We show that this stationary state continually produces entropy. The rate of entropy production is strictly negative when the temperatures are unequal and is proportional to the mean energy flux through the system.

Non-Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics of Anharmonic Chains Coupled to Two Heat Baths at Different Temperatures

We study the statistical mechanics of a finite-dimensional non-linear Hamiltonian system (a chain of anharmonic oscillators) coupled to two heat baths (described by wave equations). Assuming that the initial conditions of the heat baths are distributed according to the Gibbs measures at two different temperatures we study the dynamics of the oscillators. Under suitable assumptions on the potential and on the coupling between the chain and the heat baths, we prove the existence of an invariant measure for any temperature difference, i.e., we prove the existence of steady states. Furthermore, if the temperature difference is sufficiently small, we prove that the invariant measure is unique and mixing. In particular, we develop new techniques for proving the existence of invariant measures for random processes on a non-compact phase space. These techniques are based on an extension of the commutator method of Hörmander used in the study of hypoelliptic differential operators.

Extensive Properties of the Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation

We study the set of solutions of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation in $\real^d, d<3$. We consider the global attracting set (i.e., the forward map of the set of bounded initial data), and restrict it to a cube $Q_L$ of side $L$. We cover this set by a (minimal) number $N_{Q_L}(ε)$ of balls of radius $ε$ in $\Linfty(Q_L)$. We show that the Kolmogorov $ε$-entropy per unit length, $H_ε=\lim_{L\to\infty} L^{-d} \log N_{Q_L}(ε)$ exists. In particular, we bound $H_ε$ by $\OO(\log(1/ε)$, which shows that the attracting set is smaller than the set of bounded analytic functions in a strip. We finally give a positive lower bound: $H_ε>\OO(\log(1/ε))$

Angular Projections of Fractal Sets

We discuss various questions which arise when one considers the central projection of three dimensional fractal sets (galaxy catalogs) onto the celestial globe. The issues are related to how fractal such projections look. First we show that the lacunarity in the projection can be arbitrarily small. Further characteristics of the projected set---in particular scaling---depend sensitively on how the apparent sizes of galaxies are taken into account. Finally, we discuss the influence of opacity of galaxies. Combining these ideas, seemingly contradictory statements about lacunarity and apparent projections can be reconciled.

Invariant Measures in Generic Dynamical Systems

Irreversible thermodynamics of simple fluids have been connected recently to the theory of dynamical systems and some interesting assumptions have been made about the nature of the associated invariant measures. We show that the tests of validity of these assumptions are insufficient by exhibiting observables that are incorrectly sampled with the proposed invariant measures. Only observables belonging to the "high temperature phase" of the thermodynamic formalism are insensitive to the sampling methods. We outline methods that are free of these deficiencies.

Oscillations of Observables in 1-Dimensional Lattice Systems

Using, and extending, striking inequalities by V.V. Ivanov on the down-crossings of monotone functions and ergodic sums, we give universal bounds on the probability of finding oscillations of observables in 1-dimensional lattice gases in infinite volume. In particular, we study the finite volume average of the occupation number as one runs through an increasing sequence of boxes of size $2n$ centered at the origin. We show that the probability to see $k$ oscillations of this average between two values $β$ and $0<α<β$ is bounded by $C R^k$, with $R<1$, where the constants $C$ and $R$ do not depend on any detail of the model, nor on the state one observes, but only on the ratio $α/β$.

Inside-Outside Duality for Planar Billiards -- A Numerical Study

This paper reports the results of extensive numerical studies related to spectral properties of the Laplacian and the scattering matrix for planar domains (called billiards). There is a close connection between eigenvalues of the billiard Laplacian and the scattering phases, basically that every energy at which a scattering phase is $2π$ corresponds to an eigenenergy of the Laplacian. Interesting phenomena appear when the shape of the domain does not allow an extension of the eigenfunction to the exterior. In this paper these phenomena are studied and illustrated from several points of view.
