The Rigid Body Dynamics in an ideal fluid: Clebsch Top and Kummer surfaces

This is an expository presentation of a completely integrable Hamiltonian system of Clebsch top under a special condition introduced by Weber. After a brief account on the geometric setting of the system, the structure of the Poisson commuting first integrals is discussed following the methods by Magri and Skrypnyk. Introducing supplementary coordinates, a geometric connection to Kummer surfaces, a typical class of K3 surfaces, is mentioned and also the system is linearized on the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve of genus two determined by the system. Further some special solutions contained in some vector subspace are discussed. Finally, an explicit computation of the action-angle coordinates is introduced.

Analytic Extension of the Birkhoff Normal Forms for the Free Rigid Body Dynamics on SO(3)

Birkhoff normal form is a power series expansion associated with the local behavior of the Hamiltonian systems near a critical point. It is known to be convergent for integrable systems under some non-degeneracy conditions. By means of an expression of the inverse of Birkhoff normal form by a period integral, analytic continuation of the Birkhoff normal forms is considered for the free rigid body dynamics on SO(3). The global behavior of the Birkhoff normal forms is clarified in relation to the monodromy of an elliptic fibration which naturally arises from the free rigid body dynamics.

SAPHIR - a multi-scale, multi-resolution modeling environment targeting blood pressure regulation and fluid homeostasis

We present progress on a comprehensive, modular, interactive modeling environment centered on overall regulation of blood pressure and body fluid homeostasis. We call the project SAPHIR, for "a Systems Approach for PHysiological Integration of Renal, cardiac, and respiratory functions". The project uses state-of-the-art multi-scale simulation methods. The basic core model will give succinct input-output (reduced-dimension) descriptions of all relevant organ systems and regulatory processes, and it will be modular, multi-resolution, and extensible, in the sense that detailed submodules of any process(es) can be "plugged-in" to the basic model in order to explore, eg. system-level implications of local perturbations. The goal is to keep the basic core model compact enough to insure fast execution time (in view of eventual use in the clinic) and yet to allow elaborate detailed modules of target tissues or organs in order to focus on the problem area while maintaining the system-level regulatory compensations.

Mathematical modeling of the GnRH pulse and surge generator

We propose a mathematical model allowing for the alternating pulse and surge pattern of GnRH (Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone) secretion. The model is based on the coupling between two systems running on different time scales. The faster system corresponds to the average activity of GnRH neurons, while the slower one corresponds to the average activity of regulatory neurons. The analysis of the slow/fast dynamics exhibited within and between both systems allows to explain the different patterns (slow oscillations, fast oscillations and periodical surge) of GnRH secretion. Specifications on the model parameter values are derived from physiological knowledge in terms of amplitude, frequency and plateau length of oscillations. The behavior of the model is finally illustrated by numerical simulations reproducing natural ovarian cycles and either direct or indirect actions of ovarian steroids on GnRH secretion.

Analytic properties of the return mapping of Lienard Equations

An effective version of Bautin's theory with explicit estimates on the size of the neighborhood on which the number of limit cycles is controlled is given here for the case of Lienard Systems. The Bautin ideal is computed and the conjecture of W. de Melo-A. Lins Neto-C.C. Pugh is checked at any order of the perturbation.

On the bifurcation of periodic orbits

This article is a survey on recent contributions to an effective version of Bautin's theory about the bifurcation of periodic orbits (limit cycles). The analysis of Hopf bifurcations of higher order is possible by use of the return mapping. Explicit estimates of the size of the domain on which the number of limit cycles is controlled are important in many applications of bifurcation theory (for instance in Biology and Physiology).
