Getting into Shape: Efficient Cooling Scheme for Fermionic Atoms in Optical Lattices

We propose an experimental procedure to cool fermionic atoms loaded into an optical lattice. The central idea is to spatially divide the system into entropy-rich and -poor regions by shaping the confining potential profile. Atoms in regions of high entropy per particle are subsequently isolated from the system. We discuss how to experimentally carry out this proposal, and perform a quantitative study of its efficiency. We find that the entropy per particle, $s$, can typically be reduced by a factor of 10 such that entropies lower than $s/k_B \sim 0.2$ can be reached. Cooling into highly sought-after quantum phases (such as an antiferromagnet) can thus be achieved. We show that this procedure is robust against variations of the experimental conditions.

Quantum order by disorder in frustrated diamond lattice antiferromagnets

We present a quantum theory of frustrated diamond lattice antiferromagnets. Considering quantum fluctuations as the predominant mechanism relieving spin frustration, we find a rich phase diagram comprising of six phases with coplanar spiral ordering in addition to the Néel phase. By computing the specific heat of these ordered phases, we obtain a remarkable agreement between $(k,k,0)$-spiral ordering and the experimental specific heat data for the diamond lattice spinel compounds MnSc$_2$S$_4$, Co$_3$O$_4$ and CoRh$_2$O$_4$, i.e. specific heat data is a strong evidence for $(k,k,0)$-spiral ordering in all of these materials. This prediction can be tested in future neutron scattering experiments on Co$_3$O$_4$ and CoRh$_2$O$_4$, and is consistent with existing neutron scattering data on MnSc$_2$S$_4$. Based on this agreement we infer a monotonically increasing relationship between frustration and the strength of quantum fluctuations.

Biaxial spin-nematic phase of two dimensional disordered rotor models and spin-one bosons in optical lattices

We show that the ground state of disordered rotor models with quadrupolar interactions can exhibit biaxial nematic ordering in the disorder-averaged sense. We present a mean-field analysis of the model and demonstrate that the biaxial phase is stable against small quantum fluctuations. We point out the possibility of experimental realization of such rotor models using ultracold spin-one Bose atoms in a spin-dependent and disordered optical lattice in the limit of a large number of atoms per site and also suggest an imaging experiment to detect the biaxial nematicity in such systems.

Mott phases and superfluid-insulator transition of dipolar spin-three bosons in an optical lattice: implications for Cr atoms

We study the Mott phases and superfluid-insulator transition of spin-three bosons in an optical lattice with an anisotropic two dimensional optical trap. We chart out the phase diagrams for Mott states with $n=1$ and $n=2$ atoms per lattice site. It is shown that the long-range dipolar interaction stabilizes a state where the chains of the ferromagnetically aligned spins run along the longer trap direction while the spin ordering is staggered between nearby chains, leading to an antiferromagnetic ordering along the shorter trap direction. We also obtain the mean-field phase boundary for the superfluid-insulator transition in these systems and study the nature of spin ordering in the superfluid state near the transition. We show that, inside the superfluid phase and near the superfluid-insulator phase boundary, the system undergoes a first order antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic spin ordering transition. We discuss implications of our results for $^{52}$Cr atoms and suggest possible experiments to detect different phases in such systems.

U(1) spin liquids and valence bond solids in a large-N three-dimensional Heisenberg model

We study possible quantum ground states of the Sp(N) generalized Heisenberg model on a cubic lattice with nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions. The phase diagram is obtained in the large-N limit and fluctuation effects are considered via appropriate gauge theories. In particular, we find three U(1) spin liquid phases with different short-range magnetic correlations. These phases are characterized by deconfined gapped spinons, gapped monopoles, and gapless ``photons''. As N becomes smaller, a confinement transition from these phases to valence bond solids (VBS) may occur. This transition is studied by using duality and analyzing the resulting theory of monopoles coupled to a non-compact dual gauge field; the condensation of the monopoles leads to VBS phases. We determine the resulting VBS phases emerging from two of the three spin liquid states. On the other hand, the spin liquid state near J_1 \approx J_2 appears to be more stable against monopole condensation and could be a promising candidate for a spin liquid state in real systems.

The planar pyrochlore antiferromagnet: A large-N analysis

We study possible quantum phases of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the planar pyrochlore lattice, also known as the checkerboard lattice or the square lattice with crossings. It is assumed that the exchange coupling on the square-lattice-links is not necessarily the same as those along the crossing links. When all the couplings are the same, this model may be regarded as a two dimensional analog of the pyrochlore antiferromagnet. The large-N limit of the Sp($N$) generalized model is considered and the phase diagram is obtained by analyzing the fluctuation effects about the $N \to \infty$ limit. We find a topologically-ordered $Z_2$-spin-liquid phase in a narrow region of the phase diagram as well as the plaquette-ordered and staggered spin-Peierls phases as possible quantum-disordered paramagnetic phases.
