Screening without screening: baryon energy at high baryon density

We compute the Coulomb interaction energy of dense sets of static quarks in a compact volume (much smaller than the lattice volume) containing one quark per lattice site. The quark color charges are combined into either a set of three-quark nucleon states, or into a non-factorizable "one big hadron" state. In both cases we find that the energy per quark is roughly constant as the volume of quarks increases. A surprise is that if we construct the nucleon states from sets of three quarks chosen at random in the volume, then the energy per quark remains roughly constant, even as the average distance between quarks in a nucleon state grows as the volume increases. This energy dependence of a nucleon in a dense medium is at odds with the behavior of an isolated nucleon as quark separation increases, and for static quarks it is not easily explicable in terms of some version of Debye screening.

On the distinction between color confinement, and confinement

The property of color confinement ("C confinement"), meaning that all asymptotic particle states are color neutral, holds not only in QCD, but also in gauge-Higgs theories deep in the Higgs regime. In this talk we describe a new and stronger confinement criterion, separation-of-charge confinement or "S$_c$ confinement," which is an extension of the Wilson area-law criterion to gauge + matter theories. We will show that there is a transition between S$_c$ and C confinement in the phase plane of gauge-Higgs theories, and we will also explain what symmetry is actually broken in the Higgs phase of a gauge-Higgs theory.

Unphysical properties of the static quark-antiquark four-point correlator in Landau gauge

We consider the four point connected correlator representing a static quark-antiquark pair separated by a spatial distance R, propagating for a Euclidean time T. This function is computed by lattice Monte Carlo in SU(2) pure gauge theory at lattice couplings $β=2.2$ and $β=2.5$ in both Coulomb and Landau gauges. The Coulomb gauge correlator is well behaved, and is dominated at large T by a state whose energy grows linearly as $σR$, with $σ$ the known asymptotic string tension. The connected correlator in Landau gauge behaves differently. At intermediate R there is clear evidence of a linear potential, but the corresponding string tension extrapolates to zero at large T. At large R the connected correlator becomes negative; moreover there are strong finite size effects. These numerical results suggest that unphysical states dominate the large Euclidean time behavior of this Landau gauge correlator.

What symmetry is actually broken in the Higgs phase of a gauge-Higgs theory?

In SU($N$) gauge-Higgs theories, with a single Higgs field in the fundamental representation, there exists in addition to the local gauge symmetry a global SU(2) symmetry, at $N=2$, and a global U(1) symmetry, for $N \ne 2$. We construct a gauge-invariant order parameter for the breaking of these global symmetries in the Higgs sector, and calculate numerically the transition lines, in coupling-constant space, for SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theories with unimodular Higgs fields. The order parameter is non-local, and therefore its non-analyticity does not violate the theorem proved by Osterwalder and Seiler. We then show that there exists a transition, in gauge-Higgs theories, between two types of confinement: ordinary color neutrality in the Higgs region, and a stronger condition, which we have called "separation-of-charge confinement," in the confinement region. We conjecture that the symmetry-breaking transition coincides with the transition between these two physically different types of confinement.

A finite-density transition line for QCD with 695 MeV dynamical fermions

We apply the relative weights method to SU(3) gauge theory with staggered fermions of mass 695 MeV at a set of temperatures in the range $151 \le T \le 267$ MeV, to obtain an effective Polyakov line action at each temperature. We then apply a mean-field method to search for phase transitions in the effective theory at finite densities. The result is a transition line in the plane of temperature and chemical potential, with an endpoint at high temperature, as expected, but also a second endpoint at a lower temperature. We cannot rule out the possibilities that a transition line reappears at temperatures lower than the range investigated, or that the second endpoint is absent for light quarks.

Observation of a Coulomb flux tube

In Coulomb gauge there is a longitudinal color electric field associated with a static quark-antiquark pair. We have measured the spatial distribution of this field, and find that it falls off exponentially with transverse distance from a line joining the two quarks. In other words there is a Coulomb flux tube, with a width that is somewhat smaller than that of the minimal energy flux tube associated with the asymptotic string tension. A confinement criterion for gauge theories with matter fields is also proposed.

A confinement criterion for gauge theories with matter fields

A generalization of the Wilson loop area-law criterion is proposed, which is applicable to gauge theories with matter in the fundamental representation of the gauge group. This new criterion, like the area law, is stronger than the statement that asymptotic particle states are massive color singlets, which holds even for theories described by the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism.

Inflation in an external four-form gauge field

We consider the possibility that the universe, viewed as a three-brane, originated in a region of strong external field strength due to a four-form gauge field in the bulk. It is shown that in a scenario of this kind inflation is generic for a wide range of initial conditions. This is true even for small field inflation with a simple quadratic inflaton potential, as well as for Higgs potentials with the initial field well away from the local maximum, not necessarily starting from rest. The power spectrum, spectral index, and $r$ parameter help to constrain parameters in this scenario, and $r<0.1$ favors Higgs potentials.

The Coulomb flux tube on the lattice

In Coulomb gauge a longitudinal electric field is generated instantaneously with the creation of a static quark-antiquark pair. The field due to the quarks is a sum of two contributions, one from the quark and one from the antiquark, and there is no obvious reason that this sum should fall off exponentially with distance from the sources. We show here, however, from numerical simulations in pure SU(2) lattice gauge theory, that the color Coulomb electric field does in fact fall off exponentially with transverse distance away from a line joining static quark-antiquark sources, indicating the existence of a color Coulomb flux tube, and the absence of long-range Coulomb dipole fields.

Inflation and Cyclotron Motion

We consider, in the context of a braneworld cosmology, the motion of the universe coupled to a four-form gauge field, with constant field strength, defined in higher dimensions. It is found, under rather general initial conditions, that in this situation there is a period of exponential inflation combined with cyclotron motion in the inflaton field space. The main effect of the cyclotron motion is that conditions on the flatness of the inflaton potential, which are typically necessary for exponential inflation, can be evaded. There are Landau levels associated with the four-form gauge field, and these correspond to quantum excitations of the inflaton field.

Polyakov line actions from SU(3) lattice gauge theory with dynamical fermions via relative weights

We extract an effective Polyakov line action from an underlying SU(3) lattice gauge theory with dynamical fermions via the relative weights method. The center-symmetry breaking terms in the effective theory are fit to a form suggested by effective action of heavy-dense quarks, and the effective action is solved at finite chemical potential by a mean field approach. We show results for a small sample of lattice couplings, lattice actions, and lattice extensions in the time direction. We find in some instances that the long-range couplings in the effective action are very important to the phase structure, and that these couplings are responsible for long-lived metastable states in the effective theory. Only one of these states corresponds to the underlying lattice gauge theory.

Relative weights approach to SU(3) gauge theories with dynamical fermions at finite density

We derive effective Polyakov line actions for SU(3) gauge theories with staggered dynamical fermions, for a small sample of lattice couplings, lattice actions, and lattice extensions in the time direction. The derivation is via the method of relative weights, and the theories are solved at finite chemical potential by mean field theory. We find in some instances that the long-range couplings in the effective action are very important to the phase structure, and that these couplings are responsible for long-lived metastable states in the effective theory. Only one of these states corresponds to the underlying lattice gauge theory.

Constituent gluons and the static quark potential

We suggest that Hamiltonian matrix elements between physical states in QCD might be approximated, in Coulomb gauge, by "lattice-improved" tree diagrams; i.e. tree diagram contributions with dressed ghost, transverse gluon, and Coulomb propagators obtained from lattice simulations. Such matrix elements can be applied to a truncated-basis treatment of hadronic states which include constituent gluons. As an illustration, we apply this hybrid approach to the heavy quark potential, for quark-antiquark separations up to 2.4 fm. The Coulomb string tension in SU(3) gauge theory is about a factor of four times greater than the asymptotic string tension. In our approach we show that a single constituent gluon is in principle sufficient, up to 2.4 fm, to reduce this overshoot by the factor required. The static potential remains linear, although the precise value of the string tension depends on details of the Couloumb gauge ghost and gluon propagators in the infrared regime. In this connection we present new lattice results for the transverse gluon propagator in position space.

Polyakov line actions from $SU(3)$ lattice gauge theory with dynamical fermions: first results via relative weights

We apply the relative weights method to extract an effective Polyakov line action, at finite chemical potential, from an underlying $SU(3)$ lattice gauge theory with dynamical fermions. The center-symmetry breaking terms in the effective theory are fit to a form suggested by the hopping-parameter expansion, and the effective action is solved at finite chemical potential by a mean field approach. We present preliminary results for one-link staggered fermions with mass $ma=1.0$ and Wilson gauge action at $β=5.4$ on $L^3\times4$ lattices with $L=16$.

Center Vortex vs. Abelian models of the QCD vacuum

We present evidence that the center vortex model of confinement is more consistent with lattice results than other currently available models. In particular we show that Abelian field distributions predicted by monopole plasma, caloron gas or dual superconductor models cannot reproduce the area-law falloff of double winding Wilson loops in full $SU(2)$ and center vortex only gauge fields.
