Generalized Kähler-Ricci flow on toric Fano varieties

We study the generalized Kähler-Ricci flow with initial data of symplectic type, and show that this condition is preserved. In the case of a Fano background with toric symmetry, we establish global existence of the normalized flow. We derive an extension of Perelman's entropy functional to this setting, which yields convergence of nonsingular solutions at infinity. Furthermore, we derive an extension of Mabuchi's $K$-energy to this setting, which yields weak convergence of the flow.

Variational structure and uniqueness of generalized Kähler-Ricci solitons

Under broad hypotheses we derive a scalar reduction of the generalized Kähler-Ricci soliton system. We realize solutions as critical points of a functional analogous to the classical Aubin energy defined on the orbit of a natural Hamiltonian action of diffeomorphisms, thought of as a generalized Kähler class. This functional is convex on a large set of paths in this space, and using this we show rigidity of solitons in their generalized Kähler class. As an application we prove uniqueness of the generalized Kähler-Ricci solitons on Hopf surfaces constructed in arXiv:1907.03819, finishing the classification in complex dimension $2$.

Four-dimensional generalized Ricci flows with nilpotent symmetry

We study solutions to generalized Ricci flow on four-manifolds with a nilpotent, codimension $1$ symmetry. We show that all such flows are immortal, and satisfy type III curvature and diameter estimates. Using a new kind of monotone energy adapted to this setting, we show that blowdown limits lie in a canonical finite-dimensional family of solutions. The results are new for Ricci flow.

Codimension four regularity of generalized Einstein structures

We establish codimension 4 regularity of noncollapsed sequences of metrics with bounds on natural generalizations of the Ricci tensor. We obtain a priori L2 curvature estimates on such spaces, with diffeomorphism finiteness results and rigidity theorems as corollaries.

Non-Kähler Calabi-Yau geometry and pluriclosed flow

Hermitian, pluriclosed metrics with vanishing Bismut-Ricci form give a natural extension of Calabi-Yau metrics to the setting of complex, non-Kähler manifolds, and arise independently in mathematical physics. We reinterpret this condition in terms of the Hermitian-Einstein equation on an associated holomorphic Courant algebroid, and thus refer to solutions as Bismut Hermitian-Einstein. This implies Mumford-Takemoto slope stability obstructions, and using these we exhibit infinitely many topologically distinct complex manifolds in every dimension with vanishing first Chern class which do not admit Bismut Hermitian-Einstein metrics. This reformulation also leads to a new description of pluriclosed flow in terms of Hermitian metrics on holomorphic Courant algebroids, implying new global existence results, in particular on all complex non-Kähler surfaces of nonnegative Kodaira dimension. On complex manifolds which admit Bismut-flat metrics we show global existence and convergence of pluriclosed flow to a Bismut-flat metric, which in turn gives a classification of generalized Kähler structures on these spaces.

The nondegenerate generalized Kähler Calabi-Yau problem

We formulate a Calabi-Yau type conjecture in generalized Kähler geometry, focusing on the case of nondegenerate Poisson structure. After defining natural Hamiltonian deformation spaces for generalized Kähler structures generalizing the notion of Kähler class, we conjecture unique solvability of Gualtieri's Calabi-Yau equation within this class. We establish the uniqueness, and moreover show that all such solutions are actually hyper-Kähler metrics. We furthermore establish a GIT framework for this problem, interpreting solutions of this equation as zeros of a moment map associated to a Hamiltonian action and finding a Kempf-Ness functional. Lastly we indicate the naturality of generalized Kähler-Ricci flow in this setting, showing that it evolves within the given Hamiltonian deformation class, and that the Kempf-Ness functional is monotone, so that the only possible fixed points for the flow are hyper-Kähler metrics. On a hyper-Kähler background, we establish global existence and weak convergence of the flow.

Generalized Ricci Flow

This book gives an introduction to fundamental aspects of generalized Riemannian, complex, and Kähler geometry. This leads to an extension of the classical Einstein-Hilbert action, which yields natural extensions of Einstein and Calabi-Yau structures as `canonical metrics' in generalized Riemannian and complex geometry. The generalized Ricci flow is introduced as a tool for constructing such metrics, and extensions of the fundamental Hamilton/Perelman regularity theory of Ricci flow are proved. These results are refined in the setting of generalized complex geometry, where the generalized Ricci flow is shown to preserve various integrability conditions, taking the form of pluriclosed flow and generalized Kähler-Ricci flow. This leads to global convergence results, and applications to complex geometry. A purely mathematical introduction to the physical idea of T-duality is given, and a discussion of its relationship to generalized Ricci flow.

Deformation classes in generalized Kähler geometry

We introduce natural deformation classes of generalized Kähler structures using the Courant symmetry group. We show that these yield natural extensions of the notions of Kähler class and Kähler cone to generalized Kähler geometry. Lastly we show that the generalized Kähler-Ricci flow preserves this generalized Kähler cone, and the underlying real Poisson tensor.

On a Calabi-type estimate for pluriclosed flow

The regularity theory for pluriclosed flow hinges on obtaining $C^α$ regularity for the metric assuming uniform equivalence to a background metric. This estimate was established in \cite{StreetsPCFBI} by an adaptation of ideas from Evans-Krylov, the key input being a sharp differential inequality satisfied by the associated `generalized metric' defined on $T \oplus T^*$. In this work we give a sharpened form of this estimate with a simplified proof. To begin we show that the generalized metric itself evolves by a natural curvature quantity, which leads quickly to an estimate on the associated Chern connections analogous to, and generalizing, Calabi-Yau's $C^3$ estimate for the complex Monge Ampere equation.

Classification of generalized Kähler-Ricci solitons on complex surfaces

Using toric geometry we give an explicit construction of the compact steady solitons for pluriclosed flow first constructed in arXiv:1802.00170. This construction also reveals that these solitons are generalized Kähler in two distinct ways, with vanishing and nonvanishing Poisson structure. This gives the first examples of generalized Kähler structures with nonvanishing Poisson structure on non-standard Hopf surfaces, completing the existence question for such structures. Moreover this gives a complete answer to the existence question for generalized Kähler-Ricci solitons on compact complex surfaces. In the setting of generalized Kähler geometry with vanishing Poisson structure, we show that these solitons are unique. We show that these solitons are global attractors for the generalized Kähler-Ricci flow among metrics with maximal symmetry.

Complex manifolds with negative curvature operator

We prove that compact complex manifolds with admitting metrics with negative Chern curvature operator either admit a $dd^c$-exact positive (1,1) current, or are Kähler with ample canonical bundle. In the case of complex surfaces we obtain a complete classification. The proofs rely on a global existence and convergence result for the pluriclosed flow.

Index-energy estimates for Yang-Mills connections and Einstein metrics

We prove a conformally invariant estimate for the index of Schrödinger operators acting on vector bundles over four-manifolds, related to the classical Cwikel-Lieb-Rozenblum estimate. Applied to Yang-Mills connections we obtain a bound for the index in terms of its energy which is conformally invariant, and captures the sharp growth rate. Furthermore we derive an index estimate for Einstein metrics in terms of the topology and the Einstein-Hilbert energy. Lastly we derive conformally invariant estimates for the Betti numbers of an oriented four-manifold with positive scalar curvature.

Pluriclosed flow and the geometrization of complex surfaces

We recall fundamental aspects of the pluriclosed flow equation and survey various existence and convergence results, and the various analytic techniques used to establish them. Building on this, we formulate a precise conjectural description of the long time behavior of the flow on complex surfaces. This suggests an attendant geometrization conjecture which has implications for the topology of complex surfaces and the classification of generalized Kähler structures.

Classification of solitons for pluriclosed flow on complex surfaces

We give a classification of compact solitons for the pluriclosed flow on complex surfaces. First, by exploiting results from the Kodaira classification of surfaces, we show that the complex surface underlying a soliton must be Kähler except for the possibility of steady solitons on minimal Hopf surfaces. Then, we construct steady solitons on all class $1$ Hopf surfaces by exploiting a natural symmetry ansatz.

The nonparametric Fisher geometry and the chi-square process density prior

It is well known that the Fisher information induces a Riemannian geometry on parametric families of probability density functions. Following recent work, we consider the nonparametric generalization of the Fisher geometry. The resulting nonparametric Fisher geometry is shown to be equivalent to a familiar, albeit infinite-dimensional, geometric object---the sphere. By shifting focus away from density functions and toward \emph{square-root} density functions, one may calculate theoretical quantities of interest with ease. More importantly, the sphere of square-root densities is much more computationally tractable. This insight leads to a novel Bayesian nonparametric density estimation model. We construct the $χ^2$-process density prior by modeling the square-root density with a restricted Gaussian process prior. Inference over square-root densities is fast, and the model retains the flexibility characteristic of Bayesian nonparametric models. Finally, we formalize the relationship between spherical HMC in the infinite-dimensional limit and standard Riemannian HMC.
