Generalized Kahler Geometry and the Pluriclosed Flow

In prior work the authors introduced a parabolic flow for pluriclosed metrics, referred to as pluriclosed flow. We also demonstrated that this flow, after certain gauge transformations, gives a class of solutions to the renormalization group flow of the nonlinear sigma model with B-field. Using these transformations, we show that our pluriclosed flow preserves generalized Kahler structures in a natural way. Equivalently, when coupled with a nontrivial evolution equation for the two complex structures, the B-field renormalization group flow also preserves generalized Kahler structure. We emphasize that it is crucial to evolve the complex structures in the right way to establish this fact.

The long time behavior of fourth-order curvature flows

We show precompactness results for solutions to parabolic fourth order geometric evolution equations. As part of the proof we obtain smoothing estimates for these flows in the presence of a curvature bound, an improvement on prior results which also require a Sobolev constant bound. As consequences of these results we show that for any solution with a finite time singularity, the $L^{\infty}$ norm of the curvature must go to infinity. Furthermore, we characterize the behavior at infinity of solutions with bounded curvature.

The gradient flow of the $L^2$ curvature energy on surfaces

We investigate the gradient flow of the $L^2$ norm of the Riemannian curvature on surfaces. We show long time existence with arbitrary initial data, and exponential convergence of the volume normalized flow to a constant scalar curvature metric when the initial energy is below a constant determined by the Euler characteristic of the underlying surface.

Parabolic optimal transport equations on manifolds

We study a parabolic equation for finding solutions to the optimal transport problem on compact Riemannian manifolds with general cost functions. We show that if the cost satisfies the strong MTW condition and the stay-away singularity property, then the solution to the parabolic flow with any appropriate initial condition exists for all time and it converges exponentially to the solution to the optimal transportation problem. Such results hold in particular, on the sphere for the distance squared cost of the round metric and for the far-field reflector antenna cost, among others.

Ricci Yang-Mills flow on surfaces

We study the behaviour of the Ricci Yang-Mills flow for U(1) bundles on surfaces. We show that existence for the flow reduces to a bound on the isoperimetric constant. In the presence of such a bound, we show that on $S^2$, if the bundle is nontrivial, the flow exists for all time. For higher genus surfaces the flow always exists for all time. The volume normalized flow always exists for all time and converges to a constant scalar curvature metric with the bundle curvature $F$ parallel. Finally, in an appendix we classify all gradient solitons of this flow on surfaces.

A parabolic flow of pluriclosed metrics

We define a parabolic flow of pluriclosed metrics. This flow is of the same family introduced by the authors in \cite{ST}. We study the relationship of the existence of the flow and associated static metrics topological information on the underlying complex manifold. Solutions to the static equation are automatically Hermitian-symplectic, a condition we define herein. These static metrics are classified on K3 surfaces, complex toroidal surfaces, nonminimal Hopf surfaces, surfaces of general type, and Class $\seven^+$ surfaces. To finish we discuss how the flow may potentially be used to study the topology of Class $\seven^+$ surfaces.

Hermitian Curvature Flow

We define a functional for Hermitian metrics using the curvature of the Chern connection. The Euler-Lagrange equation for this functional is an elliptic equation for Hermitian metrics. Solutions to this equation are related to Kähler-Einstein metrics, and are automatically Kähler-Einstein under certain conditions. Given this, a natural parabolic flow equation arises. We prove short time existence and regularity results for this flow, as well as stability for the flow near Kähler-Einstein metrics with negative or zero first Chern class.

Asymptotic Curvature Decay and Removal of Singularities of Bach-Flat Metrics

We prove a removal of singularities result for Bach-flat metrics in dimension 4 under the assumption of bounded L^2 norm of curvature, bounded Sobolev constant and a volume growth bound. This result extends the removal of singularities result for special classes of Bach-flat metrics obtained in \cite{TVMOD}. For the proof we analyze the decay rates of solutions to the Bach-flat equation linearized around a flat metric. This classification is used to prove that Bach-flat cones are in fact ALE of order $τ$ for any $τ< 2$. This result is then used to prove the removal of singularities theorem.
