Closure operators and geometric modules of valuated matroids

We introduce a closure operator for valuated matroids and prove that it yields a cryptomorphic definition of valuated matroids. As an application, we introduce a class of modules over the tropical semifield (geometric modules) and prove that there is one-to-one correspondence between projective equivalence classes of simple valuated matroids and isomorphism classes of finitely generated geometric modules. We further illustrate how this correspondence can be lifted to simple infinite valuated matroids and geometric modules.

Representation theory over semifields

We study and classify representations of a torsion group $G$ over an idempotent semifield with special attention on the case over the Boolean semifield $\mathbb{B}$. In subsequent work we extend this theory to studying representations of matroids of low rank.

Matroidal representations of low rank

We study tropical subrepresentations of the Boolean regular representation $\mathbb{B}[G]$ of a finite group $G$. These are equivalent to the matroids on ground set $G$ for which left-multiplication by each element of $G$ is a matroid automorphism. We completely classify the tropical subrepresentations of $\mathbb{B}[G]$ for rank 3. When $G$ is an abelian group, our approach can be seen as a generalization of Golomb rulers. In doing so, we also introduce an interesting class of matroids obtained from equivalence relations on finite sets.

Tropical representations and valuated matroids

We explore several facets of tropical subrepresentations of a linear representation of a group over the tropical semifield $\mathbb{T}$. A key role in the study of tropical subrepresentations is played by two types of modules over a semiring: weakly free and quasi-free modules. We also investigate subgroups of $\text{GL}_n(K)$ for $K=\mathbb{T}$, $ \mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}$, and automorphisms of weakly free modules and tropical prevarieties defined by tropical linear equations. As an application of our results, we provide an intrinsic description of tropical subrepresentation via certain quasi-free modules, and prove that a tropical subrepresentation is equivalent to a valuated matroidal representation.

Equivariant vector bundles on toric schemes over semirings

We introduce a notion of equivariant vector bundles on schemes over semirings. We do this by considering the functor of points of a locally free sheaf. We prove that every toric vector bundle on a toric scheme $X$ over an idempotent semifield equivariantly splits as a sum of toric line bundles. We then study the equivariant Picard group $\text{Pic}_G(X)$. Finally, we prove a version of Klyachko's classification theorem for toric vector bundles over an idempotent semifield.

Vector bundles on tropical schemes

We define vector bundles for tropical schemes, and explore their properties. The paper largely consists of three parts; (1) we study free modules over zero-sum free semirings, which provide the necessary algebraic background for the theory (2) we relate vector bundles on tropical schemes to topological vector bundles and vector bundles on monoid schemes, and finally (3) we show that all line bundles on a tropical scheme can be lifted to line bundles on a usual scheme in the affine case.

Proto-exact categories of modules over semirings and hyperrings

\emph{Proto-exact categories}, introduced by Dyckerhoff and Kapranov, are a generalization of Quillen exact categories which provide a framework for defining algebraic K-theory and Hall algebras in a \emph{non-additive} setting. This formalism is well-suited to the study of categories whose objects have strong combinatorial flavor. In this paper, we show that the categories of modules over semirings and hyperrings - algebraic structures which have gained prominence in tropical geometry - carry proto-exact structures. In the first part, we prove that the category of modules over a semiring is equipped with a proto-exact structure; modules over an idempotent semiring have a strong connection to matroids. We also prove that the category of algebraic lattices $\mathcal{L}$ has a proto-exact structure, and furthermore that the subcategory of $\mathcal{L}$ consisting of finite lattices is equivalent to the category of finite $\mathbb{B}$-modules as proto-exact categories, where $\mathbb{B}$ is the \emph{Boolean semifield}. We also discuss some relations between $\mathcal{L}$ and geometric lattices (simple matroids) from this perspective. In the second part, we prove that the category of modules over a hyperring has a proto-exact structure. In the case of finite modules over the \emph{Krasner hyperfield} $\mathbb{K}$, a well-known relation between finite $\mathbb{K}$-modules and finite incidence geometries yields a combinatorial interpretation of exact sequences.

Lattices, Spectral Spaces, and Closure Operations on Idempotent Semirings

Spectral spaces, introduced by Hochster, are topological spaces homeomorphic to the prime spectra of commutative rings. In this paper we study spectral spaces in perspective of idempotent semirings which are algebraic structures receiving a lot of attention due to its several applications to tropical geometry. We first prove that a space is spectral if and only if it is the \emph{prime $k$-spectrum} of an idempotent semiring. In fact, we enrich Hochster's theorem by constructing a subcategory of idempotent semirings which is antiequivalent to the category of spectral spaces. We further provide examples of spectral spaces arising from sets of congruence relations of semirings. In particular, we prove that the \emph{space of valuations} and the \emph{space of prime congruences} on an idempotent semiring are spectral, and there is a natural bijection of sets between the two; this shows a stark difference between rings and idempotent semirings. We then develop several aspects of commutative algebra of semirings. We mainly focus on the notion of \emph{closure operations} for semirings, and provide several examples. In particular, we introduce an \emph{integral closure operation} and a \emph{Frobenius closure operation} for idempotent semirings.

Picard groups for tropical toric schemes

From any monoid scheme $X$ (also known as an $\mathbb{F}_1$-scheme) one can pass to a semiring scheme (a generalization of a tropical scheme) $X_S$ by scalar extension to an idempotent semifield $S$. We prove that for a given irreducible monoid scheme $X$ (satisfying some mild conditions) and an idempotent semifield $S$, the Picard group $Pic(X)$ of $X$ is stable under scalar extension to $S$ (and in fact to any field $K$). In other words, we show that the groups $Pic(X)$ and $Pic(X_S)$ (and $Pic(X_K)$) are isomorphic. In particular, if $X_\mathbb{C}$ is a toric variety, then $Pic(X)$ is the same as the Picard group of the associated tropical scheme. The Picard groups can be computed by considering the correct sheaf cohomology groups. We also define the group $CaCl(X_S)$ of Cartier divisors modulo principal Cartier divisors for a cancellative semiring scheme $X_S$ and prove that $CaCl(X_S)$ is isomorphic to $Pic(X_S)$.

Finite Extensions of $\mathbb{Z}_\mathrm{max}$

We classify the semifields and division semirings containing the max-plus semifield $\mathbb{Z}_\mathrm{max}$, which are finitely generated as $\mathbb{Z}_\mathrm{max}$-semimodules.

Extension of valuations in characteristic one

We develop an extension of valuations theorem for suitable extensions of idempotent semirings. As an application, we give a new proof for the classical case of fields. Along the way, we develop characteristic one analogues of some central results in the theory of valuation rings.

An equivalence between two approaches to limits of local fields

Marc Krasner proposed a theory of limits of local fields in which one relates the extensions of a local field to the extensions of a sequence of related local fields. The key ingredient in his approach was the notion of valued hyperfields, which occur as quotients of local fields. Pierre Deligne developed a different approach to the theory of limits of local fields which replaced the use of hyperfields by the use of what he termed triples, which consist of truncated discrete valuation rings plus some extra data. We study the relationship between Krasner's valued hyperfields and Deligne's triples.
