Edge Computing-Enabled Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems

Mobile edge computing (MEC) has been introduced to provide additional computing capabilities at network edges in order to improve performance of latency critical applications. In this paper, we consider the cell-free (CF) massive MIMO framework with implementing MEC functionalities. We consider multiple types of users with different average time requirements for computing/processing the tasks, and consider access points (APs) with MEC servers and a central server (CS) with the cloud computing capability. After deriving successful communication and computing probabilities using stochastic geometry and queueing theory, we present the successful edge computing probability (SECP) for a target computation latency. Through numerical results, we also analyze the impact of the AP coverage and the offloading probability to the CS on the SECP. It is observed that the optimal probability of offloading to the CS in terms of the SECP decreases with the AP coverage. Finally, we numerically characterize the minimum required energy consumption for guaranteeing a desired level of SECP. It is observed that for any desired level of SECP, it is more energy efficient to have larger number of APs as compared to having more number of antennas at each AP with smaller AP density.

Multi-layer Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Networks: Modeling and Performance Analysis

Since various types of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with different hardware capabilities are introduced, we establish a foundation for the multi-layer aerial network (MAN). First, the MAN is modeled as K layer ANs, and each layer has UAVs with different densities, floating altitudes, and transmission power. To make the framework applicable for various scenarios in MAN, we consider the transmitter- and the receiver-oriented node association rules as well as the air-to-ground and air-to-air channel models, which form line of sight links with a location-dependent probability. We then newly analyze the association probability, the main link distance distribution, successful transmission probability (STP), and area spectral efficiency (ASE) of MAN. The upper bounds of the optimal densities that maximize STP and ASE are also provided. Finally, in the numerical results, we show the optimal UAV densities of an AN that maximize the ASE and the STP decrease with the altitude of the network. We also show that when the total UAV density is fixed for two layer AN, the use of single layer in higher(lower) altitude only for all UAVs can achieve better performance for low(high) total density case, otherwise, distributing UAVs in two layers, i.e., MAN, achieves better performance.

Outage Probability of UAV Communications in the Presence of Interference

Unlike terrestrial communications, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications have some advantages such as line-of-sight (LoS) environment and flexible mobility, but the interference will be still inevitable. In this paper, we analyze the effect of interference on the UAV communications by considering the LoS probability and different channel fadings for LoS and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) links, affected by the elevation angle of communication link. We then derive a closed-form outage probability in the presence of interfering node for all the possible scenarios and environments of main and interference links. After discussing the impacts of transmitting and interfering node parameters on the outage probability, we show the existence of the optimal height of UAV that minimizes the outage probability. We also show NLoS environment can be better than LoS environment if the average received power of interference is more dominant than that of transmitting signal in UAV communications.

Performance Analysis for Multi-layer Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Networks

In this paper, we provide the model of the multilayer aerial network (MAN), composed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that distributed in Poisson point process (PPP) with different densities, heights, and transmission power. In our model, we consider the line of sight (LoS) and non-line of sight (NLoS) channels which is probabilistically formed. We firstly derive the probability distribution function (PDF) of the main link distance and the Laplace transform of interference of MAN considering strongest average received power-based association. We then analyze the successful transmission probability (STP) of the MAN and provide the upper bound of the optimal density that maximizes the STP of the MAN. Through the numerical results, we show the existence of the optimal height of UAV due to a performance tradeoff caused by the height of the aerial network (AN), and also show the upper bounds of the optimal densities in terms of the STP, which decrease with the height of the ANs.

ReHand: Secure Region-based Fast Handover with User Anonymity for Small Cell Networks in 5G

Due to the expectedly higher density of mobile devices and exhaust of radio resources, the fifth generation (5G) mobile networks introduce small cell concept in the radio access technologies, so-called Small Cell Networks (SCNs), to improve radio spectrum utilization. However, this increases the chance of handover due to smaller coverage of a micro base station, i.e., home eNodeB (HeNB) in 5G. Subsequently, the latency will increase as the costs of authenticated key exchange protocol, which ensures entity authentication and communication confidentiality for secure handover, also increase totally. Thus, this work presents a secure region-based handover scheme (ReHand) with user anonymity and fast revocation for SCNs in 5G. ReHand greatly reduces the communication costs when UEs roam between small cells within the region of a macro base station, i.e., eNB in 5G, and the computation costs due to the employment of symmetry-based cryptographic operations. Compared to the three elaborated related works, ReHand dramatically reduces the costs from 82.92% to 99.99%. Nevertheless, this work demonstrates the security of ReHand by theoretically formal proofs.

Self-Controlled Jamming Resilient Design Using Physical Layer Secret Keys

Direct-sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) has been recognized as an effective jamming resilient technique. However, the effectiveness of DSSS relies on the use of either pre-shared unique secret keys or a bank of public codes, which can be prohibitively expensive in future large-scale decentralized wireless networks, e.g., the Internet of Things. To tackle this problem, in this work we develop a new framework for self-controlled physical-layer-security-based spreading sequence generation. Specifically, we exploit the shared randomness inherent in wireless channels to generate and refresh secret seeds at each communicating node using shared randomness extraction, entropy pooling and random seed generation. The generated secret seeds are then utilized to perform DSSS. To evaluate the performance, we implement our framework on software defined radio platform and examine the successful transmission probability of the system under various models of broadband jamming along with an special case wherein adversary is assumed to have leaked information on key rate. Both our analysis and real-world measurements confirm that communication systems based on our framework can achieve jamming-resilient communications without requiring pre-shared sequences.

Reconfigurable Security: Edge Computing-based Framework for IoT

In various scenarios, achieving security between IoT devices is challenging since the devices may have different dedicated communication standards, resource constraints as well as various applications. In this article, we first provide requirements and existing solutions for IoT security. We then introduce a new reconfigurable security framework based on edge computing, which utilizes a near-user edge device, i.e., security agent, to simplify key management and offload the computational costs of security algorithms at IoT devices. This framework is designed to overcome the challenges including high computation costs, low flexibility in key management, and low compatibility in deploying new security algorithms in IoT, especially when adopting advanced cryptographic primitives. We also provide the design principles of the reconfigurable security framework, the exemplary security protocols for anonymous authentication and secure data access control, and the performance analysis in terms of feasibility and usability. The reconfigurable security framework paves a new way to strength IoT security by edge computing.

Secure Communications for the Two-user Broadcast Channel with Random Traffic

In this work, we study the stability region of the two-user broadcast channel (BC) with bursty data arrivals and security constraints. We consider the scenario, where one of the receivers has a secrecy constraint and its packets need to be kept secret from the other receiver. This is achieved by employing full-duplexing at the receiver with the secrecy constraint, so that it transmits a jamming signal to impede the reception of the other receiver. In this context, the stability region of the two-user BC is characterized for the general decoding case. Then, assuming two different decoding schemes the respective stability regions are derived. The effect of self-interference due to the full-duplex operation on the stability region is also investigated. The stability region of the BC with a secrecy constraint, where the receivers do not have full duplex capability can be obtained as a special case of the results derived in this paper. In addition, the paper considers the problem of maximizing the saturated throughput of the queue, whose packets does not require to be kept secret under minimum service guarantees for the other queue. The results provide new insights on the effect of the secrecy constraint on the stability region of the BC. In particular, it is shown that the stability region with secrecy constraint is sensitive to the coefficient of self-interference cancelation under certain cases.

Exploiting Trust Degree for Multiple-Antenna User Cooperation

For a user cooperation system with multiple antennas, we consider a trust degree based cooperation techniques to explore the influence of the trustworthiness between users on the communication systems. For the system with two communication pairs, when one communication pair achieves its quality of service (QoS) requirement, they can help the transmission of the other communication pair according to the trust degree, which quantifies the trustworthiness between users in the cooperation. For given trust degree, we investigate the user cooperation strategies, which include the power allocation and precoder design for various antenna configurations. For SISO and MISO cases, we provide the optimal power allocation and beamformer design that maximize the expected achievable rates while guaranteeing the QoS requirement. For a SIMO case, we resort to semidefinite relaxation (SDR) technique and block coordinate update (BCU) method to solve the corresponding problem, and guarantee the rank-one solutions at each step. For a MIMO case, as MIMO is the generalization of MISO and SIMO, the similarities among their problem structures inspire us to combine the methods from MISO and SIMO together to efficiently tackle MIMO case. Simulation results show that the trust degree information has a great effect on the performance of the user cooperation in terms of the expected achievable rate, and the proposed user cooperation strategies achieve high achievable rates for given trust degree.

GRAAD: Group Anonymous and Accountable D2D Communication in Mobile Networks

Device-to-Device (D2D) communication is mainly launched by the transmission requirements between devices for specific applications such as Proximity Services in Long-Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A) networks, and each application will form a group of devices for the network-covered and network-absent D2D communications. Although there are many privacy concerns in D2D communication, they have not been well-addressed in current communication standards. This work introduces network-covered and network-absent authenticated key exchange protocols for D2D communications to guarantee accountable group anonymity, end-to-end security to network operators, as well as traceability and revocability for accounting and management requirements. We formally prove the security of those protocols, and also develop an analytic model to evaluate the quality of authentication protocols by authentication success rate in D2D communications. Besides, we implement the proposed protocols on android mobile devices to evaluate the computation costs of the protocols. We also evaluate the authentication success rate by the proposed analytic model and prove the correctness of the analytic model via simulation. Those evaluations show that the proposed protocols are feasible to the performance requirements of D2D communications.

Heterogeneous Cellular Networks with LoS and NLoS Transmissions--The Role of Massive MIMO and Small Cells

We develop a framework for downlink heterogeneous cellular networks with line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) transmissions. Using stochastic geometry, we derive tight approximation of achievable downlink rate that enables us to compare the performance between densifying small cells and expanding BS antenna arrays. Interestingly, we find that adding small cells into the network improves the achievable rate much faster than expanding antenna arrays at the macro BS. However, when the small cell density exceeds a critical threshold, the spacial densification will lose its benefits and further impair the network capacity. To this end, we present the optimal small cell density that maximizes the rate as practical deployment guidance. In contrast, expanding macro BS antenna array can always benefit the capacity until an upper bound caused by pilot contamination, and this bound also surpasses the peak rate obtained from deployment of small cells. Furthermore, we find that allocating part of antennas to distributed small cell BSs works better than centralizing all antennas at the macro BS, and the optimal allocation proportion is also given for practical configuration reference. In summary, this work provides a further understanding on how to leverage small cells and massive MIMO in future heterogeneous cellular networks deployment.

On the Secrecy Capacity Region of the 2-user Z Interference Channel with Unidirectional Transmitter Cooperation

In this work, the role of unidirectional limited rate transmitter cooperation is studied in the case of the 2-user Z interference channel (Z-IC) with secrecy constraints at the receivers, on achieving two conflicting goals simultaneously: mitigating interference and ensuring secrecy. First, the problem is studied under the linear deterministic model. The achievable schemes for the deterministic model use a fusion of cooperative precoding and transmission of a jamming signal. The optimality of the proposed scheme is established for the deterministic model for all possible parameter settings using the outer bounds derived by the authors in a previous work. Using the insights obtained from the deterministic model, a lower bound on the secrecy capacity region of the 2-user Gaussian Z-IC are obtained. The achievable scheme in this case uses stochastic encoding in addition to cooperative precoding and transmission of a jamming signal. The secure sum generalized degrees of freedom (GDOF) is characterized and shown to be optimal for the weak/moderate interference regime. It is also shown that the secure sum capacity lies within 2 bits/s/Hz of the outer bound for the weak/moderate interference regime for all values of the capacity of the cooperative link. Interestingly, in case of the deterministic model, it is found that there is no penalty on the capacity region of the Z-IC due to the secrecy constraints at the receivers in the weak/moderate interference regimes. Similarly, it is found that there is no loss in the secure sum GDOF for the Gaussian case due to the secrecy constraint at the receiver, in the weak/moderate interference regimes. The results highlight the importance of cooperation in facilitating secure communication over the Z-IC.

Outer Bounds on the Secrecy Capacity Region of the 2-user Z Interference Channel With Unidirectional Transmitter Cooperation

This paper derives outer bounds on the secrecy capacity region of the 2-user Z interference channel (Z-IC) with rate-limited unidirectional cooperation between the transmitters. First, the model is studied under the linear deterministic setting. The derivation of the outer bounds on the secrecy capacity region involves careful selection of the side information to be provided to the receivers and using the secrecy constraints at the receivers in a judicious manner. To this end, a novel partitioning of the encoded messages and outputs is proposed for the deterministic model based on the strength of interference and signal. The obtained outer bounds are shown to be tight using the achievable scheme derived by the authors in a previous work. Using the insight obtained from the deterministic model, outer bounds on the secrecy capacity region of the 2-user Gaussian Z-IC are obtained. The equivalence between the outer bounds for both the models is also established. It is also shown that secrecy constraint at the receiver does not hurt the capacity region of the 2-user Z-IC for the deterministic model in the weak/moderate interference regime. On the other hand, the outer bounds developed for the Gaussian case shows that secrecy constraint at the receiver can reduce the capacity region for the weak/moderate interference regime. The study of the relative performance of these bounds reveals insight into the fundamental limits of the 2-user Z-IC with limited rate transmitter cooperation.

Cooperative Caching and Transmission Design in Cluster-Centric Small Cell Networks

Wireless content caching in small cell networks (SCNs) has recently been considered as an efficient way to reduce the traffic and the energy consumption of the backhaul in emerging heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNets). In this paper, we consider a cluster-centric SCN with combined design of cooperative caching and transmission policy. Small base stations (SBSs) are grouped into disjoint clusters, in which in-cluster cache space is utilized as an entity. We propose a combined caching scheme where part of the available cache space is reserved for caching the most popular content in every SBS, while the remaining is used for cooperatively caching different partitions of the less popular content in different SBSs, as a means to increase local content diversity. Depending on the availability and placement of the requested content, coordinated multipoint (CoMP) technique with either joint transmission (JT) or parallel transmission (PT) is used to deliver content to the served user. Using Poisson point process (PPP) for the SBS location distribution and a hexagonal grid model for the clusters, we provide analytical results on the successful content delivery probability of both transmission schemes for a user located at the cluster center. Our analysis shows an inherent tradeoff between transmission diversity and content diversity in our combined caching-transmission design. We also study optimal cache space assignment for two objective functions: maximization of the cache service performance and the energy efficiency. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves performance gain by leveraging cache-level and signal-level cooperation and adapting to the network environment and user QoS requirements.

Jamming-Aided Secure Communication in Massive MIMO Rician Channels

In this paper, we investigate the artificial noise-aided jamming design for a transmitter equipped with large antenna array in Rician fading channels. We figure out that when the number of transmit antennas tends to infinity, whether the secrecy outage happens in a Rician channel depends on the geometric locations of eavesdroppers. In this light, we first define and analytically describe the secrecy outage region (SOR), indicating all possible locations of an eavesdropper that can cause secrecy outage. After that, the secrecy outage probability (SOP) is derived, and a jamming-beneficial range, i.e., the distance range of eavesdroppers which enables uniform jamming to reduce the SOP, is determined. Then, the optimal power allocation between messages and artificial noise is investigated for different scenarios. Furthermore, to use the jamming power more efficiently and further reduce the SOP, we propose directional jamming that generates jamming signals at selected beams (mapped to physical angles) only, and power allocation algorithms are proposed for the cases with and without the information of the suspicious area, i.e., possible locations of eavesdroppers. We further extend the discussions to multiuser and multi-cell scenarios. At last, numerical results validate our conclusions and show the effectiveness of our proposed jamming power allocation schemes.

Hybrid Full-/Half-Duplex System Analysis in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

Full-duplex (FD) radio has been introduced for bidirectional communications on the same temporal and spectral resources so as to maximize spectral efficiency. In this paper, motivated by the recent advances in FD radios, we provide a foundation for hybrid-duplex heterogeneous networks (HDHNs), composed of multi-tier networks with a mixture of access points (APs), operating either in bidirectional FD mode or downlink half-duplex (HD) mode. Specifically, we characterize the net- work interference from FD-mode cells, and derive the HDHN throughput by accounting for AP spatial density, self-interference cancellation (IC) capability, and transmission power of APs and users. By quantifying the HDHN throughput, we present the effect of network parameters and the self-IC capability on the HDHN throughput, and show the superiority of FD mode for larger AP densities (i.e., larger network interference and shorter communication distance) or higher self-IC capability. Furthermore, our results show operating all APs in FD or HD achieves higher throughput compared to the mixture of two mode APs in each tier network, and introducing hybrid-duplex for different tier networks improves the heterogenous network throughput.
