High-Energy String Scattering Amplitudes and Signless Stirling Number Identity

We give a complete proof of a set of identities (7) proposed recently from calculation of high-energy string scattering amplitudes. These identities allow one to extract ratios among high-energy string scattering amplitudes in the fixed angle regime from high-energy amplitudes in the Regge regime. The proof is based on a signless Stirling number identity in combinatorial theory. The results are valid for arbitrary real values $L$ rather than only for $L=0,1$ proved previously. The identities for non-integer real value $L$ were recently shown to be realized in high-energy compactified string scattering amplitudes [He S., Lee J.C., Yang Y., arXiv:1012.3158]. The parameter $L$ is related to the mass level of an excited string state and can take non-integer values for Kaluza-Klein modes.

Higher Spin String States Scattered from D-particle in the Regge Regime and Factorized Ratios of Fixed Angle Scatterings

We study scattering of higher spin closed string states at arbitrary mass levels from D-particle in the Regge regime. We extract the infinite ratios among high-energy amplitudes of different string states in the fixed angle regime from these Regge string scattering amplitudes. In this calculation, we have used an identity proved recently based on a signless Stirling number identity in combinatorial theory. The complete ratios calculated by this indirect method include a subset of ratios calculated previously by direct fixed angle calculation. Moreover, we discover that in spite of the non-factorizability of the closed string D-particle scattering amplitudes, the complete ratios derived for the fixed angle regime are found to be factorized. These ratios are consistent with the decoupling of high-energy zero norm states calculated previously.

Massive Superstring Scatterings in the Regge Regime

We calculate four classes of high energy massive string scattering amplitudes of fermionic string theory at arbitrary mass levels in the Regge regime (RR). We show that all four leading order amplitudes in the RR can be expressed in terms of the Kummer function of the second kind. Based on the summation algorithm of a set of extended signed Stirling number identities, we show that all four ratios calculated previously by the method of decoupling of zero-norm states among scattering amplitudes in the Gross Regime (GR) can be extracted from this Kummer function in the RR. Finally, we conjecture and give evidences that the existence of these four GR ratios in the RR persists to subleading orders in the Regge expansion of all high energy fermionic string scattering amplitudes.

High-energy String Scatterings of Compactified Open String

We calculate high-energy massive string scattering amplitudes of compactified open string. We derive infinite linear relations, or stringy symmetries, among soft high-energy string scattering amplitudes of different string states in the Gross kinematic regime (GR). In addition, we systematically analyze all hard power-law and soft exponential fall-off regimes of high-energy compactified open string scatterings by comparing the scatterings with their 26D noncompactified counterparts. In particular, we discover the existence of a power-law regime at fixed angle and an exponential fall-off regime at small angle for high-energy compactified open string scatterings. The linear relations break down as expected in all power-law regimes. The analysis can be extended to the high-energy scatterings of the compactified closed string, which corrects and extends the previous results in [28] .

Stirling number Identities and High energy String Scatterings

We use Stirling number identities developed recently in number theory to show that ratios among high energy string scattering amplitudes in the fixed angle regime can be extracted from the Kummer function of the second kind. This result not only brings an interesting bridge between string theory and combinatoric number theory but also sheds light on the understanding of algebraic structure of high energy stringy symmetry.

Kummer function and High energy String Scatterings

Based on a summation algorithm for Stirling number identity developed recently, we discover that the ratios calculated previously among high energy string scattering amplitudes in the Gross regime (GR) can be extracted from the Kummer function of the second kind. This function naturally shows up in the leading order of high energy string scattering amplitudes in the Regge regime (RR). As a result, the identity suggested by string theory calculation can be rigorously proved by a totally different but sophisticated mathematical method. We conjecture and give evidences that the existence of these ratios in the RR persists to all orders in the Regge expansion of high energy string scattering amplitudes.

Patterns of High energy Massive String Scatterings in the Regge regime

We calculate high energy massive string scattering amplitudes of open bosonic string in the Regge regime (RR). We found that the number of high energy amplitudes for each fixed mass level in the RR is much more numerous than that of Gross regime (GR) calculated previously. Moreover, we discover that the leading order amplitudes in the RR can be expressed in terms of the Kummer function of the second kind. In particular, based on a summation algorithm for Stirling number identity, we discover that the ratios calculated previously among scattering amplitudes in the GR can be extracted from this Kummer function in the RR. We conjecture and give evidences that the existence of these GR ratios in the RR persists to subleading orders in the Regge expansion of all string scattering amplitudes. Finally, we demonstrate the universal power-law behavior for all massive string scattering amplitudes in the RR.

High-energy Massive String Scatterings from Orientifold Planes

We calculate bosonic massive closed string states at arbitrary mass levels scattered from Orientifold planes in the high-energy, fixed angle limit. For the case of O-particle scatterings, we obtain infinite linear relations among high-energy scattering amplitudes of different string states. We also confirm that there exist only closed string Regge poles in the form factor of the O-particle amplitudes as expected. For the case of O-domain-wall scatterings, we find that, like the well-known D-instanton scatterings, the amplitudes behave like field theory scatterings, namely UV power-law without infinite Regge poles. In addition, we discover that there exist only finite number of t-channel closed string poles in the form factor of O-domain-wall scatterings, and the masses of the poles are bounded by the masses of the external legs. We thus confirm that all massive closed string states do couple to the O-domain-wall.

Power-law Behavior of High Energy String Scatterings in Compact Spaces

We calculate high energy massive scattering amplitudes of closed bosonic string compactified on the torus. We obtain infinite linear relations among high energy scattering amplitudes. For some kinematic regimes, we discover that some linear relations break down and, simultaneously, the amplitudes enhance to power-law behavior due to the space-time T-duality symmetry in the compact direction. This result is consistent with the coexistence of the linear relations and the softer exponential fall-off behavior of high energy string scattering amplitudes as we pointed out prevously. It is also reminiscent of hard (power-law) string scatterings in warped spacetime proposed by Polchinski and Strassler.

Power-law Behavior of Strings Scattered from Domain-wall at High Energies and Breakdown of their Linear Relations

In contrast to the common wisdom, we discover that, instead of the exponential fall-off of the form factors with Regge-pole structure, the high-energy scattering amplitudes of string scattered from Domain-wall behave as power-law with Regge-pole structure. This is to be compared with the well-known power-law form factors without Regge-pole structure of the D-instanton scatterings. This discovery makes Domain-wall scatterings an unique example of a hybrid of string and field theory scatterings. The calculation is done for bosonic string scatterings of arbitrary massive string states from D-24 brane. Moreover, we discover that the usual linear relations of high-energy string scattering amplitudes at each fixed mass level break down for the Domain-wall scatterings. This result gives a strong evidence that the existence of the infinite linear relations, or stringy symmetries, of high-energy string scattering amplitudes is responsible for the softer, exponential fall-off high-energy string scatterings than the power-law field theory scatterings.

Linear Relations and their Breakdown in High Energy Massive String Scatterings in Compact Spaces

We calculate high energy massive scattering amplitudes of closed bosonic string compactified on the torus. For each fixed mass level with given quantized and winding momenta ((m/R),(1/2)nR), we obtain infinite linear relations among high energy scattering amplitudes of different string states. For some kinematic regimes, we discover that linear relations with N_{R}=N_{L} break down and, simultaneously, the amplitudes enhance to power-law behavior instead of the usual expoential fall-off behavior at high energies. It is the space-time T-duality symmetry that plays a role here. This result is consistent with the coexistence of the linear relations and the softer exponential fall-off behavior of high energy string scattering amplitudes as we pointed out prevously. It is also reminiscent of our previous work on the power-law behavior of high energy string/domain-wall scatterings.

Linear Relations of High Energy Absorption/Emission Amplitudes of D-brane

We calculate the absorption amplitudes of a closed string state at arbitrary mass level leading to two open string states on the D-brane at high energies. As in the case of Domain-wall scattering we studied previously, this process contains only one kinematic variable. However, in contrast to the power-law behavior of Domain-wall scattering, its form factor behaves as exponential fall-off in the high energy limit. After identifying the geometric parameter of the kinematic, we derive the linear relations (of the kinematic variable) and ratios among the high energy amplitudes corresponding to absorption of different closed string states for each fixed mass level by D-brane. This result is consistent with the coexistence of the linear relations and exponential fall-off behavior of high energy string/D-brane amplitudes.

Scatterings of Massive String States from D-brane and Their Linear Relations at High Energies

We study scatterings of bosonic massive closed string states at arbitrary mass levels from D-brane. We discover that all the scattering amplitudes can be expressed in terms of the generalized hypergeometric function with special arguments, which terminates to a finite sum and, as a result, the whole scattering amplitudes consistently reduce to the usual beta function. For the simple case of D-particle, we explicitly calculate high-energy limits of a series of the above scattering amplitudes for arbitrary mass levels, and derive infinite linear relations among them for each fixed mass level. The ratios of these high-energy scattering amplitudes are found to be consistent with the decoupling of high-energy zero-norm states of our previous works.

Zero-Norm States and Superstringy Symmetries

We identify spacetime symmetry charges of the bosonic sector of 10D superstring theory from an infinite number of zero-norm states (ZNS) in the old covariant first quantized string spectrum. We give evidences to support this identification. These include supersymmetric sigma-model calculation, 2D super-Liouville theory calculation and, most importantly, three methods of high-energy scattering amplitude calculations. These calculations generalize the previous bosonic string calculations, which explicitly prove Gross's conjectures in 1988 on high energy symmetry of string theory. Moreover, we discover new high energy scattering amplitudes which are, presumably, related to the high energy massive spacetime fermionic scattering amplitudes in the R-sector of the theory.

High-energy zero-norm states and symmetries of string theory

High-energy limit of zero-norm states (HZNS) in the old covariant first quantized (OCFQ) spectrum of the 26D open bosonic string, together with the assumption of a smooth behavior of string theory in this limit, are used to derive infinitely many linear relations among the leading high-energy, fixed angle behavior of four point functions of different string states. As a result, ratios among all high-energy scattering amplitudes of four arbitrary string states can be calculated algebraically and the leading order amplitudes can be expressed in terms of that of four tachyons as conjectured by Gross in 1988. A dual calculation can also be performed and equivalent results are obtained by taking the high-energy limit of Virasoro constraints. Finally, as a consistent sample calculation, we compute all high-energy scattering amplitudes of three tachyons and one massive state at the leading order by saddle-point approximation to justify our results.

Notes on High Energy Limit of Bosonic Closed String Scattering Amplitudes

We study bosonic closed string scattering amplitudes in the high-energy limit. We find that the methods of decoupling of high-energy zero-norm states and the high-energy Virasoro constraints, which were adopted in the previous works to calculate the ratios among high-energy open string scattering amplitudes of different string states, persist for the case of closed string. However, we clarify the previous saddle-point calculation for high-energy open string scattering amplitudes and claim that only (t,u) channel of the amplitudes is suitable for saddle-point calculation. We then discuss three evidences to show that saddle-point calculation for high-energy closed string scattering amplitudes is not reliable. By using the relation of tree-level closed and open string scattering amplitudes of Kawai, Lewellen and Tye (KLT), we calculate the high-energy closed string scattering amplitudes for arbitrary mass levels. For the case of high-energy closed string four-tachyon amplitude, our result differs from the previous one of Gross and Mende, which is NOT consistent with KLT formula, by an oscillating factor.

One-loop Massive Scattering Amplitudes and Ward Identities in String Theory

We calculate bosonic open string one-loop massive scattering amplitudes for some low-lying string states. By using the periodicity relations of Jacobi theta functions, we explicitly prove an infinite number of one-loop type I stringy Ward identities derived from type I zero-norm states in the old covariant first quantized (OCFQ) spectrum of open bosonic string. The subtlety in the proofs of one-loop type II stringy Ward identities is discussed by comparing with those of string-tree cases. High-energy limit of these stringy Ward identities can be used to fix the proportionality constants between one-loop massive high-energy scattering amplitudes of different string states with the same momenta. These proportionality constants can not be calculated directly from sample calculations as we did previously in the cases of string-tree scattering amplitudes.

Zero-norm states and stringy symmetries

We identify spacetime symmetry charges of 26D open bosonic string theory from an infinite number of zero-norm states (ZNS) with arbitrary high spin in the old covariant first quantized string spectrum. We give various evidences to support this identification. These include massive sigma-model calculation, Witten string field theory calculation, 2D string theory calculation and, most importantly, three methods of high-energy stringy scattering amplitude calculations. The last calculations explicitly prove Gross's conjectures in 1988 on high energy symmetry of string theory.
