Many-particle quantum graphs: A review

In this paper we review recent work that has been done on quantum many-particle systems on metric graphs. Topics include the implementation of singular interactions, Bose-Einstein condensation, sovable models and spectral properties of some simple models in connection with superconductivity in wires.

A Gutzwiller trace formula for large hermitian matrices

We develop a semiclassical approximation for the dynamics of quantum systems in finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces whose classical counterparts are defined on a toroidal phase space. In contrast to previous models of quantum maps, the time evolution is in continuous time and, hence, is generated by a Schrödinger equation. In the framework of Weyl quantisation, we construct discrete, semiclassical Fourier integral operators approximating the unitary time evolution and use these to prove a Gutzwiller trace formula. We briefly discuss a semiclassical quantisation condition for eigenvalues as well as some simple examples.

Solvable models of interacting n-particle systems on quantum graphs

We introduce n-particle quantum graphs with singular two-particle interactions in such a way that eigenfunctions can be given in the form of a Bethe ansatz. We show that this leads to a secular equation characterising eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian that is based on a finite-dimensional determinant. These findings generalise previous results about two-particle quantum graphs.

The Berry-Keating operator on a lattice

We construct and study a version of the Berry-Keating operator with a built-in truncation of the phase space, which we choose to be a two-dimensional torus. The operator is a Weyl quantisation of the classical Hamiltonian for an inverted harmonic oscillator, producing a difference operator on a finite, periodic lattice. We investigate the continuum and the infinite-volume limit of our model in conjunction with the semiclassical limit. Using semiclassical methods, we show that a specific combination of the limits leads to a logarithmic mean spectral density as it was anticipated by Berry and Keating.

Exactly solvable interacting two-particle quantum graphs

We construct models of exactly solvable two-particle quantum graphs with certain non-local two-particle interactions, establishing appropriate boundary conditions via suitable self-adjoint realisations of the two-particle Laplacian. Showing compatibility with the Bethe ansatz method, we calculate quantisation conditions in the form of secular equations from which the spectra can be deduced. We compare spectral statistics of some examples to well known results in random matrix theory, analysing the chaotic properties of their classical counterparts.

Instability of Bose-Einstein condensation on quantum graphs under repulsive perturbations

In this Note we investigate Bose-Einstein condensation in interacting quantum many-particle systems on graphs. We extend previous results obtained for particles on an interval and show that even arbitrarily small repulsive two-particle interactions destroy a condensate in the non-interacting Bose gas. Our results also cover singular two-particle interactions, such as the well-known Lieb-Lininger model, in the thermodynamic limit.

Heat-kernel and resolvent asymptotics for Schroedinger operators on metric graphs

We consider Schroedinger operators on compact and non-compact (finite) metric graphs. For such operators we analyse their spectra, prove that their resolvents can be represented as integral operators and introduce trace-class regularisations of the resolvents. Our main result is a complete asymptotic expansion of the trace of the (regularised) heat-semigroup generated by the Schroedinger operator. We also determine the leading coefficients in the expansion explicitly.

Zero modes of quantum graph Laplacians and an index theorem

We study zero modes of Laplacians on compact and non-compact metric graphs with general self-adjoint vertex conditions. In the first part of the paper the number of zero modes is expressed in terms of the trace of a unitary matrix $\mathfrak{S}$ that encodes the vertex conditions imposed on functions in the domain of the Laplacian. In the second part a Dirac operator is defined whose square is related to the Laplacian. In order to accommodate Laplacians with negative eigenvalues it is necessary to define the Dirac operator on a suitable Kre\uın space. We demonstrate that an arbitrary, self-adjoint quantum graph Laplacian admits a factorisation into momentum-like operators in a Kre\uın-space setting. As a consequence, we establish an index theorem for the associated Dirac operator and prove that the zero-mode contribution in the trace formula for the Laplacian can be expressed in terms of the index of the Dirac operator.

Bose-Einstein condensation on quantum graphs

We present results on Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) on general compact quantum graphs, i.e., one-dimensional systems with a (potentially) complex topology. We first investigate non-interacting many-particle systems and provide a complete classification of systems that exhibit condensation. We then consider models with interactions that consist of a singular part as well as a hardcore part. In this way we obtain generalisations of the Tonks-Girardeau gas to graphs. For this we find an absence of phase transitions which then indicates an absence of BEC.

Many-particle quantum graphs and Bose-Einstein condensation

In this paper we propose quantum graphs as one-dimensional models with a complex topology to study Bose-Einstein condensation and phase transitions in a rigorous way. We fist investigate non-interacting many-particle systems on quantum graphs and provide a complete classification of systems that exhibit Bose-Einstein condensation. We then consider models of interacting particles that can be regarded as a generalisation of the well-known Tonks-Girardeau gas. Here our principal result is that no phase transitions occur in bosonic systems with repulsive hardcore interactions, indicating an absence of Bose-Einstein condensation.

Quantum graphs with two-particle contact interactions

We construct models of many-particle quantum graphs with singular two-particle contact interactions, which can be either hardcore- or delta-interactions. Self-adjoint realisations of the two-particle Laplacian including such interactions are obtained via their associated quadratic forms. We prove discreteness of spectra as well as Weyl laws for the asymptotic eigenvalue counts. These constructions are first performed for two distinguishable particles and then for two identicle bosons. Furthermore, we extend the models to N bosons with two-particle interactions, thus implementing the Lieb-Liniger model on a graph.

Quantum graphs with singular two-particle interactions

We construct quantum models of two particles on a compact metric graph with singular two-particle interactions. The Hamiltonians are self-adjoint realisations of Laplacians acting on functions defined on pairs of edges in such a way that the interaction is provided by boundary conditions. In order to find such Hamiltonians closed and semi-bounded quadratic forms are constructed, from which the associated self-adjoint operators are extracted. We provide a general characterisation of such operators and, furthermore, produce certain classes of examples. We then consider identical particles and project to the bosonic and fermionic subspaces. Finally, we show that the operators possess purely discrete spectra and that the eigenvalues are distributed following an appropriate Weyl asymptotic law.

Some Studies on Arithmetical Chaos in Classical and Quantum Mechanics

Several aspects of classical and quantum mechanics applied to a class of strongly chaotic systems are studied. These consist of single particles moving without external forces on surfaces of constant negative Gaussian curvature whose corresponding fundamental groups are supplied with an arithmetic structure. It is shown that the arithmetic features of the considered systems lead to exceptional properties of the corresponding spectra of lengths of periodic orbits. The most significant one is an exponential growth of degeneracies in these length spectra. Furthermore, the arithmetical systems are distinguished by a structure that appears as a generalization of geometric symmetries. These pseudosymmetries occur in the quantization of the classical arithmetic systems as Hecke operators, which form an infinite algebra of self-adjoint operators commuting with the Hamiltonian. The statistical properties of quantum energies in the arithmetical have previously been identified as exceptional. They do not fit into the general scheme of random matrix theory. It is shown with the help of a simplified model for the spectral form factor how the spectral statistics in arithmetic quantum chaos can be understood by the properties of the corresponding classical length spectra. A decisive is played by the exponentially increasing multiplicities of lengths. The model developed for the level spacings distribution and for the number variance is compared to the corresponding quantities obtained from quantum energies for a specific arithmetical system.

The trace formula for quantum graphs with general self adjoint boundary conditions

We consider compact metric graphs with an arbitrary self adjoint realisation of the differential Laplacian. After discussing spectral properties of Laplacians, we prove several versions of trace formulae, relating Laplace spectra to sums over periodic orbits on the graph. This includes trace formulae with, respectively, absolutely and conditionally convergent periodic orbit sums; the convergence depending on properties of the test functions used. We also prove a trace formula for the heat kernel and provide small-$t$ asymptotics for the trace of the heat kernel.

Semiclassical theory of ballistic transport through chaotic cavities with spin-orbit interaction

We investigate the influence of spin-orbit interaction on ballistic transport through chaotic cavities by using semiclassical methods. Our approach is based on the Landauer formalism and the Fisher-Lee relations, appropriately generalized to spin-orbit interaction, and a semiclassical representation of Green functions. We calculate conductance coefficients by exploiting ergodicity and mixing of suitably combined classical spin-orbit dynamics, and making use of the Sieber-Richter method and its most recent extensions. That way we obtain weak anti-localization and confirm previous results obtained in the symplectic ensemble of Random Matrix Theory.

Oscillatory multiband dynamics of free particles: The ubiquity of zitterbewegung effects

In the Dirac theory for the motion of free relativistic electrons, highly oscillatory components appear in the time evolution of physical observables such as position, velocity, and spin angular momentum. This effect is known as zitterbewegung. We present a theoretical analysis of rather different Hamiltonians with gapped and/or spin-split energy spectrum (including the Rashba, Luttinger, and Kane Hamiltonians) that exhibit analogs of zitterbewegung as a common feature. We find that the amplitude of oscillations of the Heisenberg velocity operator v(t) generally equals the uncertainty for a simultaneous measurement of two linearly independent components of v. It is also shown that many features of zitterbewegung are shared by the simple and well-known Landau Hamiltonian describing the dynamics of two-dimensional (2D) electron systems in the presence of a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane. Finally, we also discuss the oscillatory dynamics of 2D electrons arising from the interplay of Rashba spin splitting and a perpendicular magnetic field.

The Selberg trace formula for Dirac operators

We examine spectra of Dirac operators on compact hyperbolic surfaces. Particular attention is devoted to symmetry considerations, leading to non-trivial multiplicities of eigenvalues. The relation to spectra of Maass-Laplace operators is also exploited. Our main result is a Selberg trace formula for Dirac operators on hyperbolic surfaces.
