Freestanding GdBa2Cu3O7 Thin Films via Optimized Buffer Layer Design: Preserving Superconducting Properties

Freestanding GdBa2Cu3O7 (GdBCO) superconducting thin films were fabricated using a water-soluble Sr3Al2O6 (SAO) sacrificial layer in combination with thermal release tape. An amorphous Al2O3 capping layer was introduced to suppress crack formation during the lift-off process. The influence of buffer-layer design inserted between the GdBCO and SAO layers was systematically investigated with respect to structural integrity and superconducting properties after lift-off. A LaAlO3/SrTiO3 bilayer buffer was found to be essential for maintaining epitaxial growth and a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of approximately 92 K after lift-off, comparable to that of the as-grown films. In contrast, a reversed SrTiO3/LaAlO3 bilayer and single-layer buffer structures led to a suppression of Tc, highlighting the critical role of stacking sequence. These results demonstrate that optimization of the buffer-layer design is a key factor for realizing high-quality freestanding GdBCO films while maintaining their superconducting characteristics.

Best practices for a proper evaluation and conversion of physical property equations in superconductors: the examples of WHH formulation, Bean model and other cases of interest

In recent years there have been growing concerns about the proper evaluation of physical properties of superconductors, in particular for quantities extracted from magnetic characterizations. Errors can and often do occur due to the following issues: i) several measurement instruments still use Gaussian & cgs-emu units instead of the preferable International System (SI) units; ii) there are decades of valuable publications where, however, equations were expressed in Gaussian & cgs-emu or other unit systems or where constants were normalized to unity, which requires proper understanding and unit conversion in order to correctly evaluate the measured physical quantities; iii) the conversion between unit systems sometimes appears challenging and may not be properly performed. In this paper we will describe how to properly convert physical quantities relevant for the evaluation of magnetic and other properties focusing on the still most used unit systems, SI and Gaussian & cgs-emu. We will provide examples of how to properly verify and understand the physical formulae. We will include examples for the correct method to determine the critical current density Jc of a superconductor from the measurement of its magnetic hysteresis loop through the Bean model, and the correct conversion to SI of the equations for Hc2(T) according to the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg (WHH) formulation. The goals of this paper are to make the readers aware of the unit conversion issue, to provide useful hands-on tools for proper conversion and to strongly encourage future exclusive use of the SI units and formulae.

Absence of diode effect in chiral type-I superconductor NbGe2

Symmetry elegantly governs the fundamental properties and derived functionalities of condensed matter. For instance, realizing the superconducting diode effect (SDE) demands breaking space-inversion and time-reversal symmetries simultaneously. Although the SDE is widely observed in various platforms, its underlying mechanism remains debated, particularly regarding the role of vortices. Here, we systematically investigate the nonreciprocal transport in the chiral type-I superconductor NbGe2. Moreover, we induce type-II superconductivity with elevated superconducting critical temperature on the artificial surface by focused ion beam irradiation, enabling control over vortex dynamics in NbGe2 devices. Strikingly, we observe negligible diode efficiency (Q < 2%) at low magnetic fields, which rises significantly to Q ~ 50% at high magnetic fields, coinciding with an abrupt increase in vortex creep rate when the superconductivity of NbGe2 bulk is suppressed. These results unambiguously highlight the critical role of vortex dynamics in the SDE, in addition to the established symmetry rules.

Structural analysis and transport properties of [010]-tilt grain boundaries in Fe(Se,Te)

Understanding the nature of grain boundaries is a prerequisite for fabricating high-performance superconducting bulks and wires. For iron-based superconductors [e.g. Ba(Fe,Co)$_2$As$_2$, Fe(Se,Te), and NdFeAs(O,F)], the dependence of the critical current density $J_\mathrm{c}$ on misorientation angle ($θ_\mathrm{GB}$) has been explored on [001]-tilt grain boundaries, but no data for other types of orientations have been reported. Here, we report on the structural and transport properties of Fe(Se,Te) grown on CeO$_2$-buffered symmetric [010]-tilt roof-type SrTiO$_3$ bicrystal substrates by pulsed laser deposition. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy revealed that $θ_\mathrm{GB}$ of Fe(Se,Te) was smaller whereas $θ_\mathrm{GB}$ of CeO$_2$ was larger than that of the substrate. The difference in $θ_\mathrm{GB}$ between the CeO$_2$ buffer layer and the substrate is getting larger with increasing $θ_\mathrm{GB}$. For $θ_\mathrm{GB}\geq24^\circ$ of the substrates, $θ_\mathrm{GB}$ of Fe(Se,Te) was zero, whereas $θ_\mathrm{GB}$ of CeO$_2$ was continuously increasing. The inclined growth of CeO$_2$ can be explained by the geometrical coherency model. The $c$-axis growth of Fe(Se,Te) for $θ_\mathrm{GB}\geq24^\circ$ of the substrates is due to the domain matching epitaxy on (221) planes of CeO$_2$. Electrical transport measurements confirmed no reduction of inter-grain $J_\mathrm{c}$ for $θ_\mathrm{GB}\leq9^\circ$, indicative of strong coupling between the grains.

A disorder-sensitive emergent vortex phase identified in high-Tc superconductor (Li,Fe)OHFeSe

The magneto-transport properties are systematically measured under c-direction fields up to 33 T for a series of single-crystal films of intercalated iron-selenide superconductor (Li,Fe)OHFeSe. The film samples with varying degree of disorder are grown hydrothermally. We observe a magnetic-field-enhanced shoulder-like feature in the mixed state of the high-Tc (Li,Fe)OHFeSe films with weak disorder, while the feature fades away in the films with enhanced disorder. The irreversibility field is significantly suppressed to lower temperatures with the appearance of the shoulder feature. Based on the experiment and model analysis, we establish a new vortex phase diagram for the weakly disordered high-Tc (Li,Fe)OHFeSe, which features an emergent dissipative vortex phase intermediate between the common vortex glass and liquid phases. The reason for the emergence of this intermediate vortex state is further discussed based on related experiments and models.

Nanoscale Texture and Microstructure in NdFeAs(O,F)/IBAD-MgO Superconducting Thin Film with Superior Critical Current Properties

This paper reports the nanoscale texture and microstructure of a high-performance NdFeAs(O,F) superconducting thin film grown by molecular beam epitaxy on a textured MgO/Y$_2$O$_3$/Hastelloy substrate. The NdFeAs(O,F) film forms a highly textured columnar grain structure by epitaxial growth on the MgO template. Although the film contains stacking faults along the $ab$-plane as well as grain boundaries perpendicular to the $ab$-plane, good superconducting properties are measured: a critical temperature, $T _{\rm c}$, of 46 K and a self-field critical current density, $J_{\rm c}$, of $2 \times 10^6 \,{\rm A/cm^2}$ at 4.2 K. Automated crystal orientation mapping by scanning precession electron diffraction in transmission electron microscopy is employed to analyze the misorientation angles between adjacent grains in a large ensemble (247 grains). 99% of the grain boundaries show in-plane misorientation angles ($Δγ$) less than the critical angle $θ_{\rm c}$, which satisfies one of the necessary conditions for the high $J_{\rm c}$. Comparing the columnar grain size distribution with the mean distance of the flux line lattice, the triple junctions of low-angle grain boundaries are found to be effective pinning centers, even at high temperatures ($\ge$35 K) and/or low magnetic fields.

High $J_{\rm c}$ and low anisotropy of hydrogen doped NdFeAsO superconducting thin film

The recent realisations of hydrogen doped $Ln$FeAsO ($Ln$=Nd and Sm) superconducting epitaxial thin films call for further investigation of their structural and electrical transport properties. Here, we report on the microstructure of a NdFeAs(O,H) epitaxial thin film and its temperature, field, and orientation dependencies of the resistivity and the critical current density $J_{\rm c}$. The superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ is comparable to NdFeAs(O,F). Transmission electron microscopy investigation supported that hydrogen is homogenously substituted for oxygen. A high self-field $J_{\rm c}$ of over 10 MA/cm$^2$ was recorded at 5 K, which is likely to be caused by a short London penetration depth. The anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau scaling for the angle dependence of $J_{\rm c}$ yielded temperature-dependent scaling parameters $γ_{\rm J}$ that decreased from 1.6 at 30 K to 1.3 at 5 K. This is opposite to the behaviour of NdFeAs(O,F). Additionally, $γ_{\rm J}$ of NdFeAs(O,H) is smaller than that of NdFeAs(O,F). Our results indicate that heavily electron doping by means of hydrogen substitution for oxygen in $Ln$FeAsO is highly beneficial for achieving high $J_{\rm c}$ with low anisotropy without compromising $T_{\rm c}$, which is favourable for high-field magnet applications.

$\mathrm{La}_{\mathrm{1-}x} \mathrm{Mn}_{\mathrm{1-}y} \mathrm{O}_{\mathrm{1\pm}δ}$ buffer layers on inclined substrate deposited MgO templates for coated conductors

Most commercial high-temperature superconducting coated conductors based on ion beam assisted MgO deposited templates use $\mathrm{LaMnO_3}$ (LMO) films as the terminating buffer layer. In contrast, coated conductors based on inclined substrate deposition (ISD)-MgO technology are still produced with homoepitaxial (homoepi)-MgO as the cap layer. In this work we report on the deposition of LMO buffer layers on ISD-MgO/homoepi-MgO by electron beam physical vapor deposition. The growth parameters of textured LMO films were studied systematically and their properties were optimized regarding the critical current densitiy ($J_\mathrm{c}$) of the subsequently deposited $\mathrm{DyBa_2Cu_3O}_{\mathrm{7-}δ}$ (DyBCO) superconducting films. LMO films without outgrowths at the surface were obtained at growth rates of up to $4\,\mathrm{Å/s}$. Despite the formation of non-stoichiometric LMO films containing $59\,\%$ La, single-phase films were obtained at substrate temperatures below $775^{\circ}\mathrm{C}$ and at oxygen partial pressures of up to $4\times10^{-4}\,\mathrm{mbar}$ due to a large homogeneity region towards La. The $J_\mathrm{c}$ values of DyBCO films deposited on LMO were found to be independent of the LMO thickness in a range from $50\,\mathrm{nm}$ to $450\,\mathrm{nm}$. DyBCO films on LMO reach $J_\mathrm{c}=0.83\,\mathrm{MA/cm^2}$ at $77\,\mathrm{K}$ in zero applied field. This value is up to $30\,\%$ higher than those of DyBCO films grown directly on homoepi-MgO. The wide range of LMO growth parameters and higher $J_\mathrm{c}$ values of DyBCO on LMO compared to DyBCO on homoepi-MgO make this material attractive for its use in manufacturing coated conductors based on ISD-MgO technology.

Grain boundary characteristics of Fe-based superconductors

Understanding the nature of grain boundary (GB) characteristics in combination with creating low-energy GBs by modifying the processing conditions, so-called GB engineering, is of great importance for controlling and reducing the defect density, leading to improved functionalities of polycrystalline metals and ceramics. For superconductors particularly, including both low- and high-temperature superconductors, GB engineering has been developed to improve especially the critical current densities, Jc, across these GBs. The intrinsic physical properties of a given superconductor such as the coherence length, the order parameter symmetry, and their anisotropies would determine the strategy of GB engineering. In this topical review, we present an overview of the GB characteristics and GB engineering of Fe-based superconductors (FBS) in the form of polycrystalline bulks and wires, and thin films with application potential, e.g. for high-field magnet wires. Prior to the FBS, GB engineering of the cuprates and MgB2 are also briefly covered.

Novel method to study strain effect of thin films using a piezoelectric-based device and a flexible metallic substrate

For applying tensile or compressive uniaxial strain to functional thin films, we propose a novel approach in combining a piezoelectric-based device and a technical metallic substrate used widely in the 2nd generation coated conductors (i.e. superconducting tapes). A strain-induced shift of the superconducting transition temperature of 0.1 K for Co-doped BaFe2As2 was observed along [100] direction, corresponding to a uniaxial pressure derivative dTc/dp100=-4 K/GPa. For Mn3CuN, a uniaxial strain derivative along [100] direction of the Curie temperature dTC/de100=13 K/% was observed. The current approach is applicable to various functional thin films in a wide range of temperatures.

Fe-based superconducting thin films on metallic substrates: growth, characteristics and relevant properties

The discovery of Fe-based superconductors (FBS) as the second class of high-temperature superconducting transition (high-Tc) materials after the cuprates generated a significant impact on the community of fundamental and applied superconductivity research. Whenever a new class of high-Tc superconducting materials is discovered, a lot of effort is devoted to growing single crystals and epitaxial thin films for exploring basic physical quantities. Although several properties of FBS are similar to the cuprates (large upper critical fields, resulting from a short coherence lengths, and small carrier density), others are distinctly different. For instance, in FBS the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter is most likely not a d-wave but an s+-wave, depending on the stoichiometry, crystallographic system, and doping level. Additionally, the critical current densities of FBS are less sensitive to the presence of grain boundaries (GBs) than those of the high-Tc cuprates. These features are highly beneficial for the realization of cheaper conductors for high-field magnets at low temperatures. Indeed, several groups have demonstrated FBS thin films on technical metallic substrates and powder-in-tube processed FBS wires as proof-of-principle studies for conductor applications. FBS on technical substrates also give many opportunities for studying how GB networks affect the critical current and how uniaxial strain impacts the superconducting properties. In this article, we review FBS thin films, especially on technical metallic substrates, and focus on application-relevant properties like pinning improvement by natural and artificial defects as well as the transparency of GBs and GB networks. The recent development of FBS thin films on technical substrates and their superconducting properties are presented and the performance gap with respect to films on single crystals is discussed.

High-field transport properties of a P-doped BaFe2As2 film on technical substrate

High temperature (high-Tc) superconductors like cuprates have superior critical current properties in magnetic fields over other superconductors. However, superconducting wires for high-field-magnet applications are still dominated by low-Tc Nb3Sn due probably to cost and processing issues. The recent discovery of a second class of high-Tc materials, Fe-based superconductors, may provide another option for high-field-magnet wires. In particular, AEFe2As2 (AE: Alkali earth elements, AE-122) is one of the best candidates for high-field-magnet applications because of its high upper critical field, Hc2, moderate Hc2 anisotropy, and intermediate Tc. Here we report on in-field transport properties of P-doped BaFe2As2 (Ba-122) thin films grown on technical substrates (i.e., biaxially textured oxides templates on metal tapes) by pulsed laser deposition. The P-doped Ba-122 coated conductor sample exceeds a transport Jc of 10^5 A/cm^2 at 15 T for both major crystallographic directions of the applied magnetic field, which is favourable for practical applications. Our P-doped Ba-122 coated conductors show a superior in-field Jc over MgB2 and NbTi, and a comparable level to Nb3Sn above 20 T. By analysing the E-J curves for determining Jc, a non-Ohmic linear differential signature is observed at low field due to flux flow along the grain boundaries. However, grain boundaries work as flux pinning centres as demonstrated by the pinning force analysis.

Superconducting properties of Ba(Fe1-xNix)2As2 thin films in high magnetic fields

We report on electrical transport properties of epitaxial Ba(Fe1-xNix)2As2 thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition in static magnetic fields up to 35 T. The thin film shows a critical temperature of 17.2 K and a critical current density of 5.7x10^5 A/cm^2 in self field at 4.2 K while the pinning is dominated by elastic pinning at two-dimensional nonmagnetic defects. Compared to single-crystal data, we find a higher slope of the upper critical field for the thin film at a similar doping level and a small anisotropy. Also an unusual small vortex liquid phase was observed at low temperatures, which is a striking difference to Co-doped BaFe2As2 thin films.

Influence of substrate type on transport properties of superconducting FeSe0.5Te0.5 thin films

FeSe0.5Te0.5 thin films were grown by pulsed laser deposition on CaF2, LaAlO3 and MgO substrates and structurally and electro-magnetically characterized in order to study the influence of the substrate on their transport properties. The in-plane lattice mismatch between FeSe0.5Te0.5 bulk and the substrates shows no influence on the lattice parameters of the films, whereas the type of substrates affects the crystalline quality of the films and, therefore, the superconducting properties. The film on MgO showed an extra peak in the angular dependence of critical current density Jc(θ) at θ = 180° (H || c), which arises from c-axis defects as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. In contrast, no Jc(θ) peaks for H || c were observed in films on CaF2 and LaAlO3. Jc(θ) can be scaled successfully for both films without c-axis correlated defects by the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (AGL) approach with appropriate anisotropy ratio γJ. The scaling parameter γJ is decreasing with decreasing temperature, which is different from what we observed in FeSe0.5Te0.5 films on Fe-buffered MgO substrates.

Highly textured oxypnictide superconducting thin films on metal substrates

Highly textured NdFeAs(O,F) thin films have been grown on ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD)-MgO/Y2O3/Hastelloy substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. The oxypnictide coated conductors showed a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 43 K with a self-field critical current density (Jc) of 7.0 x 104 A/cm2 at 5 K, more than 20 times higher than powder-in-tube processed SmFeAs(O,F) wires. Albeit higher Tc as well as better crystalline quality than Co-doped BaFe2As2 coated conductors, in-field Jc of NdFeAs(O,F) was lower than that of Co-doped BaFe2As2. These results suggest that grain boundaries in oxypnictides reduce Jc significantly compared to that in Co-doped BaFe2As2 and, hence biaxial texture is necessary for high Jc.

Versatile fluoride substrates for Fe-based superconducting thin films

We demonstrate the growth of Co-doped BaFe2As2 (Ba-122) thin films on AEF2 (001) (AE: Ca, Sr, Ba) single crystal substrates using pulsed laser deposition. All films are grown epitaxially despite of a large misfit of -10.6% for BaF2 substrate. For all films a reaction layer is formed at the interface confirmed by X-ray diffraction and by transmission electron microscopy. The superconducting transition temperature of the film on CaF2 is around 27 K, whereas the corresponding values of the other films are around 21 K. The Ba-122 on CaF2 shows identical crystalline quality and superconducting properties as films on Fe-buffered MgO.

The influence of the buffer layer architecture on transport properties for BaFe1.8Co0.2As2 films on technical substrates

A low and almost temperature independent resistance in the normal state and an anomalous peak effect within the normal-superconducting transition have been observed in BaFe$_{1.8}$Co$_{0.2}$As$_2$/Fe bilayers, prepared on IBAD-MgO/Y$_2$O$_3$ buffered technical substrates. A resistor network array sufficiently reproduces this effect, assuming an increase of the electrical conductance between tape and film with decreasing buffer layer thickness. Based on this model we evaluated the influence of this effect on the critical current density and successfully reconstructed the superconducting transition of the bilayer.

Jc Scaling and Anisotropies in Co-doped Ba-122 thin films

We have successfully grown epitaxial, superconducting films of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (Ba-122)with x ~ 0.1. The films grow without observable correlated defects parallel to the c-axis, as confirmed by TEM. This is also reflected in the absence of a caxis peak in Jc(θ). In contrast to cuprate high-Tc superconductors such as YBa2Cu3O7-d or even Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10-d, the pnictides show a rather low anisotropic behavior in their Jc(θ) behavior as well as in their upper critical fields, Hc2. As a multiband superconductor, Ba-122 exhibits a temperature dependent electronic mass anisotropy.
