Block-diagonalisation of matrices and operators

In this short note we deal with a constructive scheme to decompose a continuous family of matrices $A(ρ)$ asymptotically as $ρ\to0$ into blocks corresponding to groups of eigenvalues of the limit matrix A(0). We also discuss the extension of the scheme to matrix families depending upon additional parameters and operators on Hilbert spaces.

Diagonalisation schemes and applications

These notes develop aspects of perturbation theory of matrices related to so-called diagonalisation schemes. Primary focus is on constructive tools to derive asymptotic expansions for small/large parameters of eigenvalues and eigenprojections of families of matrices depending upon real/complex parameters. Applications of the schemes in different frameworks --including hyperbolic polynomials, asymptotic integration of ordinary differential equations, diagonalisation within symbolic hierarchies and pseudo-differential decoupling of hyperbolic-parabolic coupled systems-- are also discussed and references to further applications given.

$C^m$-theory of damped wave equations with stabilisation

The aim of this note is to extend the energy decay estimates from [J. Wirth, J. Differential Equations 222 (2006) 487--514] to a broader class of time-dependent dissipation including very fast oscillations. This is achieved using stabilisation conditions on the coefficient in the spirit of [F. Hirosawa, Math. Ann. 339/4 (2007) 819--839].

Anisotropic thermo-elasticity in 2D -- Part I: A unified approach

In this note we develop tools and techniques for the treatment of anisotropic thermo-elasticity in two space dimensions. We use a diagonalisation technique to obtain properties of the characteristic roots of the full symbol of the system in order to prove $L^p$--$L^q$ decay rates for its solutions.

The influence of time-periodic dissipation on energy and dispersive estimates

In this short note we discuss the influence of a time-periodic dissipation term on a-priori estimates for solutions to dissipative wave equations. The approach is based on a diagonalisation argument for high frequencies and results from spectral theory of periodic differential equations / Floquet theory for bounded frequencies.

Scattering and modified scattering for abstract wave equations with time-dependent dissipation

We consider the initial-value problem of abstract wave equations with weak dissipation. We show that under conditions on the dissipation coefficient and its derivative the solutions to the abstract dissipative equation are closely related to solutions of the free problem multiplied by a decay function. This paper gives the counterpart to a recent paper of T.Yamazaki [Adv. Differential Equ., 11(4):419--456, 2006], where effective dissipation terms and the relation to the corresponding abstract parabolic problem are considered.

Modified scattering for a wave equation with weak dissipation

We consider the Cauchy problem for the weakly dissipative wave equation $$ \square u+\fracμ{1+t} u_t=0 $$ with parameter $μ\ge2$. Based on the explicit representations of solutions provided in [Math. Meth. Appl. Sci. 2004; {\bf 27}:101-124] sharp decay estimates for data from a dense subspace of the energy space are derived. Furthermore, sharpness is discussed in terms of a modified scattering theory.

$L^p$--$L^q$ decay estimates for wave equations with monotone time-dependent dissipation

This expository article is intended to give an overview about recently achieved results on asymptotic properties of solutions to the Cauchy problem $u_{tt}-Δu+b(t)u_t =0,\qquad u(0,\cdot)=u_1,\quad \mathrm{D}_tu(0,\cdot)=u_2$ for a wave equation with time-dependent dissipation term. The results are based on structural properties of the Fourier multipliers representing its solution. The article explains the general philosophy behind the approach.

Asymptotic properties of solutions to weakly dissipative wave equations below scaling

The aim of this paper is to understand the influence of a dissipative term which is small in the sense that it is asymptotically below scaling on the asymptotic properties of solutions. A diagonalization procedure is applied in order to construct the main terms of the solution representation and this information is used to prove $L^p$--$L^q$ decay estimates. Furthermore, the question of sharpness is considered and formulated in terms of a modified scattering theory.

On the existence of the Moller wave operator for wave equations with small dissipative terms

The aim of this short note is to reconsider and to extend a former result of K. Mochizuki on the existence of the scattering operator for wave equations with small dissipative terms. Contrary to the approach used by Mochizuki we construct the wave operator explicitly in terms of the parametrix construction obtained by a (simplified) diagonalization procedure. The method is based on ODE techniques.

Solution Representations for a Wave Equation with Weak Dissipation

We consider the Cauchy problem for the weakly dissipative wave equation $$ \bx v+\fracμ{1+t}v_t=0, \qquad x\in\R^n,\quad t\ge 0, $$ parameterized by $μ>0$, and prove a representation theorem for its solution using the theory of special functions. This representation is used to obtain $L_p$--$L_q$ estimates for the solution and for the energy operator corresponding to this Cauchy problem. Especially for the $L_2$ energy estimate we determine the part of the phase sp which is responsible for the decay rate. It will be shown that the situation d strongly on the value of $μ$ and that $μ=2$ is critical.
