Automated selection of LEDs by luminance and chromaticity coordinate

The increased use of LEDs for lighting purposes has led to the development of numerous applications requiring a pre-selection of LEDs by their luminance and / or their chromaticity coordinate. This paper demonstrates how a manual pre-selection process can be realized using a relatively simple configuration. Since a manual selection service can only be commercially viable as long as only small quantities of LEDs need to be sorted, an automated solution suggests itself. This paper introduces such a solution, which has been developed by Harzoptics in close cooperation with Rundfunk Gernrode. The paper also discusses current challenges in measurement technology as well as market trends.

Applying the Principles of Augmented Learning to Photonics Laboratory Work

This paper introduces "OPTOTEACH", a new teaching system for photonics lab work, designed by Harz University and successfully released on the German market by HarzOptics. OPTOTEACH is the first POF-WDM teaching system, specifically designed to cover a multitude of lab experiments in the field of optical communication technology. It is illustrated, how this lab system is supplemented by a newly developed optical teaching software - "OPTOSOFT" - and how the combination of system and software creates a unique augmented learning environment. The paper details, how the didactic concept for the software was conceptualised and introduces the latest beta version. OPTOSOFT is specifically designed not only as an attachment to OPTOTEACH, it also allows students to rehearse various aspects of theoretical optics and experience a fully interactive and feature-rich self-learning environment. The paper further details the first experiences educators at Harz University have made working with the lab system as well as the teaching software. So far, the augmented learning concept was received mostly positive, although there is some potential for further optimisation concerning integration and pacing of various interactive modules.

Visible Wavelength Division Multiplex System for use as a Instructional Lab System for Higher Education

The demand for high-speed digital communication such as data, video, and the broadband Internet increases, the required throughput of the modules in communications systems will also increase. In this paper we present an instruction system, which works on the basis of a wavelength division multiplex (WDM) system in the visible spectrum. It is specialised for the academic training at universities to demonstrate the principles of the WDM techniques. It works platform independent in combination with active modules in the training description, short inline videos and interactive diagrams. The system consists of LEDs in different wavelengths using analog and digital signals.
