Direct Higgs-top CP-phase measurement with $t\bar{t}h$ at the 14 TeV LHC and 100 TeV FCC

The study of the Higgs boson's properties is a cornerstone of the LHC and future collider programs. In this paper, we examine the potential to directly probe the Higgs-top interaction strength and CP-structure in the $t\bar t h$ channel with the Higgs boson decaying to bottom-quark pairs and top-quarks in the di-leptonic mode. We adopt the BDRS algorithm to tag the boosted Higgs and exploit the $M_2$-assisted reconstruction to compute observables sensitive to the CP-phase at the $t\bar{t}$ rest frame, where the new physics sensitivity can be enhanced. Performing a side-band analysis at the LHC to control the continuum $t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ background, we find that the Higgs-top strength and CP-phase can be probed up to $δκ_t\lesssim 20\%$ and $| α| \lesssim 36^\circ$ at 95% CL, respectively. We also derive that a similar analysis at a 100 TeV future collider could further improve the precision to $δκ_t\lesssim 1\%$ and $| α| \lesssim 1.5^\circ$, where the CP-odd observables play a crucial role, boosting the sensitivity on the CP-phase.

Cosmological Particle Production and Pairwise Hotspots on the CMB

Heavy particles with masses much bigger than the inflationary Hubble scale $H_*$, can get non-adiabatically pair produced during inflation through their couplings to the inflaton. If such couplings give rise to time-dependent masses for the heavy particles, then following their production, the heavy particles modify the curvature perturbation around their locations in a time-dependent and scale non-invariant manner. This results into a non-trivial spatial profile of the curvature perturbation that is preserved on superhorizon scales and eventually generates localized hot or cold spots on the CMB. We explore this phenomenon by studying the inflationary production of heavy scalars and derive the final temperature profile of the spots on the CMB by taking into account the subhorizon evolution, focusing in particular on the parameter space where pairwise hot spots (PHS) arise. When the heavy scalar has an $\mathcal{O}(1)$ coupling to the inflaton, we show that for an idealized situation where the dominant background to the PHS signal comes from the standard CMB fluctuations themselves, a simple position space search based on applying a temperature cut, can be sensitive to heavy particle masses $M_0/H_*\sim\mathcal{O}(100)$. The corresponding PHS signal also modifies the CMB power spectra and bispectra, although the corrections are below (outside) the sensitivity of current measurements (searches).

Majority dynamics on sparse random graphs

Majority dynamics on a graph $G$ is a deterministic process such that every vertex updates its $\pm 1$-assignment according to the majority assignment on its neighbor simultaneously at each step. Benjamini, Chan, O'Donnel, Tamuz and Tan conjectured that, in the Erdős--Rényi random graph $G(n,p)$, the random initial $\pm 1$-assignment converges to a $99\%$-agreement with high probability whenever $p=ω(1/n)$. This conjecture was first confirmed for $p\geqλn^{-1/2}$ for a large constant $λ$ by Fountoulakis, Kang and Makai. Although this result has been reproved recently by Tran and Vu and by Berkowitz and Devlin, it was unknown whether the conjecture holds for $p< λn^{-1/2}$. We break this $Ω(n^{-1/2})$-barrier by proving the conjecture for sparser random graphs $G(n,p)$, where $λ' n^{-3/5}\log n \leq p \leq λn^{-1/2}$ with a large constant $λ'>0$.

End-point resummation in squark decays

We study soft and collinear gluon emission in squark decays to quark--neutralino pair, at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy in the end-point region, using Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET), and at next-to-leading (NLO) fixed order in the rest of the phase space. As a phenomenological case study we discuss the impact of radiative corrections on the simultaneous measurements of squark and neutralino masses at a linear $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider based on $\sqrt{s} = 3$ TeV Compact Linear Collider (CLIC). Since the majority of mass measurement techniques are based on edges in kinematic distributions, and these change appreciably when there is additional QCD radiation in the final state, the knowledge of higher-order QCD effects is required for precise mass determinations.

Portraying Double Higgs at the Large Hadron Collider

We examine the discovery potential for double Higgs production at the high luminosity LHC in the final state with two $b$-tagged jets, two leptons and missing transverse momentum. Although this dilepton final state has been considered a difficult channel due to the large backgrounds, we argue that it is possible to obtain sizable signal significance, by adopting a deep learning framework making full use of the relevant kinematics along with the jet images from the Higgs decay. For the relevant number of signal events we obtain a substantial increase in signal sensitivity over existing analyses. We discuss relative improvements at each stage and the correlations among the different input variables for the neutral network. The proposed method can be easily generalized to the semi-leptonic channel of double Higgs production, as well as to other processes with similar final states.

The motivation and status of two-body resonance decays after the LHC Run 2 and beyond

Searching for two-body resonance decays is a central component of the high energy physics energy frontier research program. While many of the possibilities are covered when the two bodies are Standard Model (SM) particles, there are still significant gaps. If one or both of the bodies are themselves non-SM particles, there is very little coverage from existing searches. We review the status of two-body searches and motivate the need to search for the missing combinations. It is likely that the search program of the future will be able to cover all possibilities with a combination of dedicated and model agnostic search approaches.

Probing the Triple Higgs Self-Interaction at the Large Hadron Collider

We propose a novel kinematic method to expedite the discovery of the double Higgs ($hh$) production in the $\ell^+\ell^- b \bar{b} + E_T \hspace{-0.52cm} \big / ~$ final state. We make full use of recently developed kinematic variables, as well as the variables $\it Topness$ for the dominant background (top quark pair production) and $\it Higgsness$ for the signal. We obtain a significant increase in sensitivity compared to the previous analyses which used sophisticated algorithms like boosted decision trees or neutral networks. The method can be easily generalized to resonant $hh$ production as well as other non-resonant channels.

Shedding Light on Top Partner at the LHC

We investigate the sensitivity of the 14 TeV LHC to pair-produced top partners ($T$) decaying into the Standard Model top quark ($t$) plus either a gluon ($g$) or a photon ($γ$). The decays $T\rightarrow tg$ and $T\rightarrow tγ$ can be dominant when the mixing between the top partner and top quark are negligible. In this case, the conventional decays $T\rightarrow bW$, $T\rightarrow tZ$, and $T\rightarrow th$ are highly suppressed and can be neglected. We take a model-independent approach using effective operators for the $T$-$t$-$g$ and $T$-$t$-$γ$ interactions, considering both spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ and spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ top partners. We perform a semi-realistic simulation with boosted top quark tagging and an appropriate implementation of a jet-faking-photon rate. Despite a simple dimensional analysis indicating that the branching ratios ${\rm BR}(T\rightarrow tγ)\ll {\rm BR}(T\rightarrow tg)$ due to the electric-magnetic coupling being much smaller than the strong force coupling, our study shows that the LHC sensitivity to $T\bar{T}\rightarrow t\overline{t}γg$ is more significant than the sensitivity to $T\overline{T}\rightarrow t\overline{t}gg$. This is due to much smaller backgrounds attributed to the isolated high-$p_T$ photon. We find that with these decay channels and 3 ab$^{-1}$ of data, the LHC is sensitive to top partner masses $m_T\lesssim 1.4-1.8$~TeV for spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ and spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ top partners, respectively.

Combined analysis of double Higgs production via gluon fusion at the HL-LHC in the effective field theory approach

We perform the combined analysis of the double Higgs production via gluon fusion in the $b\bar{b} γγ$ and $b\bar{b}τ^+τ^-$ decay channels at the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). To validate our analysis, we reproduce the ATLAS result of the $b\bar{b} γγ$ process including all contributions from fakes. For the $b\bar{b}τ^+τ^-$ decay channel, we perform the similar analysis to the CMS one. As an improvement, we also perform the multivariate analysis employing the boosted decision tree algorithm. Then, we derive 68% probability contours on anomalous Higgs couplings in the effective field theory (EFT) approach for various analyses. We find that the $b\bar{b}τ^+τ^-$ process outperforms the $b\bar{b}γγ$ for the measurement of energy-growing operators, while adding the $b\bar{b}τ^+τ^-$ process is least beneficial for improving the precision of the Higgs self-coupling (mainly set by the $b\bar{b}γγ$ process). We illustrate that the double Higgs production alone can be comparable to the single Higgs process in constraining the modification of the top Yukawa coupling in the positive direction. Focusing on the Higgs self-coupling as a special interest, we derive the precision as a function of various improvable parameters such as tag and mistag rates of tau leptons, heavy flavor jets, photon identification, diphoton mass resolution, and jet energy resolution to take into account future phenomenological studies. As an optimistic benchmark scenario, we illustrate that the 68% and 95% probability intervals of the Higgs self-coupling, $λ_3/λ_{3}^{SM}$, at the HL-LHC can reach $[0.2,\, 2.3]$ and $[-0.1,\, 3.5] \cup [4.0,\, 6.5]$, respectively, where the correlation among the EFT coefficients is taken into account.

Sidorenko's conjecture for higher tree decompositions

This is a companion note to our paper 'Some advances on Sidorenko's conjecture', elaborating on a remark in that paper that the approach which proves Sidorenko's conjecture for strongly tree-decomposable graphs may be extended to a broader class, comparable to that given in work of Szegedy, through further iteration.

Some advances on Sidorenko's conjecture

A bipartite graph $H$ is said to have Sidorenko's property if the probability that the uniform random mapping from $V(H)$ to the vertex set of any graph $G$ is a homomorphism is at least the product over all edges in $H$ of the probability that the edge is mapped to an edge of $G$. In this paper, we provide three distinct families of bipartite graphs that have Sidorenko's property. First, using branching random walks, we develop an embedding algorithm which allows us to prove that bipartite graphs admitting a certain type of tree decomposition have Sidorenko's property. Second, we use the concept of locally dense graphs to prove that subdivisions of certain graphs, including cliques, have Sidorenko's property. Third, we prove that if $H$ has Sidorenko's property, then the Cartesian product of $H$ with an even cycle also has Sidorenko's property.

Loop Induced Single Top Partner Production and Decay at the LHC

Most searches for top partners, $T$, are concerned with top partner pair production. However, as these bounds become increasingly stringent, the LHC energy will saturate and single top partner production will become more important. In this paper we study the novel signature of the top partner produced in association with the SM top, $pp\rightarrow T\overline{t}+t\overline{T}$, in a model where the Standard Model (SM) is extended by a vector-like $SU(2)_L$ singlet fermion top partner and a real, SM gauge singlet scalar, $S$. In this model, $pp\rightarrow T\overline{t}+t\overline{T}$ production is possible through loops mediated by the scalar singlet. We find that, with reasonable coupling strengths, the production rate of this channel can dominate top partner pair production at top partner masses of $m_T\gtrsim 1.5$ TeV. In addition, this model allows for the exotic decay modes $T\rightarrow tg$, $T\rightarrow t γ$, and $T\rightarrow t S$. In much of the parameter space the loop induced decay $T\rightarrow tg$ dominates and the top partner is quite long lived. New search strategies are necessary to cover these decay modes. We project the the sensitivity of the high luminosity LHC to $pp\rightarrow T\overline{t}+t\overline{T}$ via a realistic collider study. We find with 3 ab$^{-1}$, the LHC is sensitive to this process for masses $m_T\lesssim2$ TeV. In addition, we provide appendices detailing the renormalization of this model.

Resolving Combinatorial Ambiguities in Dilepton $t\bar t$ Event Topologies with Constrained $M_2$ Variables

We advocate the use of on-shell constrained $M_2$ variables in order to mitigate the combinatorial problem in SUSY-like events with two invisible particles at the LHC. We show that in comparison to other approaches in the literature, the constrained $M_2$ variables provide superior ansatze for the unmeasured invisible momenta and therefore can be usefully applied to discriminate combinatorial ambiguities. We illustrate our procedure with the example of dilepton $t\bar{t}$ events. We critically review the existing methods based on the Cambridge $M_{T2}$ variable and MAOS-reconstruction of invisible momenta, and show that their algorithm can be simplified without loss of sensitivity, due to a perfect correlation between events with complex solutions for the invisible momenta and events exhibiting a kinematic endpoint violation. Then we demonstrate that the efficiency for selecting the correct partition is further improved by utilizing the $M_2$ variables instead. Finally, we also consider the general case when the underlying mass spectrum is unknown, and no kinematic endpoint information is available.

Scrutinizing the Higgs quartic coupling at a future 100 TeV proton-proton collider with taus and b-jets

The Higgs potential consists of an unexplored territory in which the electroweak symmetry breaking is triggered, and it is moreover directly related to the nature of the electroweak phase transition. Measuring the Higgs boson cubic and quartic couplings, or getting equivalently information on the exact shape of the Higgs potential, is therefore an essential task. However, direct measurements beyond the cubic self-interaction of the Higgs boson consist of a huge challenge, even for a future proton-proton collider expected to operate at a center-of-mass energy of 100 TeV. We present a novel approach to extract model-independent constraints on the triple and quartic Higgs self-coupling by investigating triple Higgs-boson hadroproduction at a center-of-mass energy of 100 TeV, focusing on the $ττb \bar{b} b \bar{b}$ channel that was previously overlooked due to a supposedly too large background. It is thrown into sharp relief that the assist from transverse variables such as $m_{T2}$ and a boosted configuration ensures a high signal sensitivity. We derive the luminosities that would be required to constrain given deviations from the Standard Model in the Higgs self-interactions, showing for instance that a $2σ$ sensitivity could be achieved for an integrated luminosity of 30 ab$^{-1}$ when Standard Model properties are assumed. With the prospects of combining these findings with other triple-Higgs search channels, the Standard Model Higgs quartic coupling could in principle be reached with a significance beyond the $3σ$ level.

On the total variation distance between the binomial random graph and the random intersection graph

When each vertex is assigned a set, the intersection graph generated by the sets is the graph in which two distinct vertices are joined by an edge if and only if their assigned sets have a nonempty intersection. An interval graph is an intersection graph generated by intervals in the real line. A chordal graph can be considered as an intersection graph generated by subtrees of a tree. In 1999, Karoński, Scheinerman and Singer-Cohen [Combin Probab Comput 8 (1999), 131--159] introduced a random intersection graph by taking randomly assigned sets. The random intersection graph $G(n,m;p)$ has $n$ vertices and sets assigned to the vertices are chosen to be i.i.d. random subsets of a fixed set $M$ of size $m$ where each element of $M$ belongs to each random subset with probability $p$, independently of all other elements in $M$. Fill, Scheinerman and Singer-Cohen [Random Struct Algorithms 16 (2000), 156--176] showed that the total variation distance between the random graph $G(n,m;p)$ and the Erdös-Rényi graph $G(n,\hat{p})$ tends to $0$ for any $0 \leq p=p(n) \leq 1$ if $m=n^α$, $α>6$, where $\hat{p}$ is chosen so that the expected numbers of edges in the two graphs are the same. In this paper, it is proved that the total variation distance still tends to $0$ for any $0 \leq p=p(n) \leq 1$ whenever $m \gg n^4$.

Probing TeV scale Top-Philic Resonances with Boosted Top-Tagging at the High Luminosity LHC

We investigate the discovery potential of singly produced top-philic resonances at the high luminosity (HL) LHC in the four-top final state. Our analysis spans over the fully-hadronic, semi-leptonic, and same-sign dilepton channels where we present concrete search strategies adequate to a boosted kinematic regime and high jet-multiplicity environments. We utilize the Template Overlap Method (TOM) with newly developed template observables for tagging boosted top quarks, a large-radius jet variable $M_J$ and customized b-tagging tactics for background discrimination. Our results show that the same-sign dilepton channel gives the best sensitivity among the considered channels, with an improvement of significance up to 10%-20% when combined with boosted-top tagging. Both the fully-hadronic and semi-leptonic channels yield comparable discovery potential and contribute to further enhancements in the sensitivity by combining all channels. Finally, we show the sensitivity of a top-philic resonance at the LHC and HL-LHC by showing the $2σ$ exclusion limit and $5σ$ discovery reach, including a combination of all three channels.

Probing Higgs self-interactions in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 100 TeV

We present a phenomenological study of triple-Higgs production in which we estimate the prospects for measuring the form of the Higgs potential at future circular collider projects. We analyze proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 100 TeV and focus on two different signatures in which the final state is made of four b-jets and either a pair of photons or a pair of tau leptons. We study the resulting sensitivity on the Higgs cubic and quartic self-interactions and investigate how it depends on the b-tagging, tau-tagging and photon resolution performances of detectors that could be designed for these future machines. We then discuss possible luminosity goals for future 100 TeV collider projects that would allow for a measurement of the Higgs potential and its possible departures from the Standard Model expectation.

Discovering Heavy New Physics in Boosted $Z$ Channels: $Z \rightarrow l ^+l^- $ vs. $ Z \rightarrow ν\barν$

We propose a strategy for new physics searches in channels which contain a boosted $Z$ boson in the final state. Our proposal exploits the previously overlooked advantages of boosted $Z\rightarrow ν\barν$ topologies, where collimated neutrinos result in signals with large missing energy. We illustrate the advantage of this channel in a case study of singly produced TeV scale charge 2/3 fermionic top partners ($T'$) which decay to $t+Z$. A comparison with the di-leptonic channel reveals that signals with missing energy offer superior probes of new physics at TeV scales, despite the large $t\bar{t}$ backgrounds. The effect can be attributed to a factor of $\sim 3$ enhancement in the signal cross section, coming from the branching ratio of $Z\rightarrow ν\barν$. We exploit the unique event topology of singly produced top partners to suppress the $t\bar{t}$ background, as well as further improve on the existing proposals to detect $T'$ in the boosted di-lepton channel. Our conclusions on advantages of $Z\rightarrow ν\barν$ can be extended to most physics searches which utilize a boosted $Z$ boson in the final state.
