Field Theoretic Approach to Long Range Reactions

We analyze bimolecular reactions that proceed by a long-ranged reactive interaction, using a field theoretic approach that takes into account fluctuations. We consider both the one-species, $A+A \to \emptyset$ reaction and the two-species, $A+B \to \emptyset$ reaction. We consider both mobile and immobile reactants, both in the presence and in the absence of adsorption.

``Superfast'' Reaction in Turbulent Flow with Potential Disorder

We explore the regime of ``superfast'' reactivity that has been predicted to occur in turbulent flow in the presence of potential disorder. Computer simulation studies confirm qualitative features of the previous renormalization group predictions, which were based on a static model of turbulence. New renormalization group calculations for a more realistic, dynamic model of turbulence show that the superfast regime persists. This regime, with concentration decay exponents greater than that for a well-mixed reaction, appears to be a general result of the interplay among non-linear reaction kinetics, turbulent transport, and local trapping by potential disorder.

Reactive Turbulent Flow in Low-Dimensional, Disordered Media

We analyze the reactions $A+A \to \emptyset$ and $A + B \to \emptyset$ occurring in a model of turbulent flow in two dimensions. We find the reactant concentrations at long times, using a field-theoretic renormalization group analysis. We find a variety of interesting behavior, including, in the presence of potential disorder, decay rates faster than that for well-mixed reactions.

Ionic Reactions in Two Dimensions with Disorder

We analyze the dynamics of the ion-dipole pairing reaction in the two-dimensional Coulomb gas in the presence of disorder. Sufficiently singular disorder forces the critical temperature of the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii fixed point to be non-universal. This disorder leads to anomalous ion pairing kinetics with a continuously variable decay exponent. Sufficiently strong disorder eliminates the transition altogether. For ions that are chemically reactive, anomalous kinetics with a continuously variable decay exponent also occurs in the high-temperature regime. The Coulomb interaction inhibits reactant segregation, and so the ionic $A^+ +B^- \to \emptyset$ reaction behaves like the nonionic $A + A \to \emptyset$ reaction.

The Effect of Static Disorder and Reactant Segregation on the $A + B \to \emptyset$ Reaction

We derive the long-time behavior of the ${A} + {B} \to \emptyset$ reaction in two dimensions, finding a universal exponent and prefactor in the absence of disorder. Sufficiently singular disorder leads to a (sub)diffusion-limited reaction and a continuously variable decay exponent. Pattern matching between the reactant segregation and the disorder is not strong enough to affect the long-time decay.

Disorder-Induced Anomalous Kinetics in the $A+A \to \emptyset$ Reaction

We address the two-dimensional bimolecular annihilation reaction $A + A \to \emptyset$ in the presence of random impurities. Impurities with sufficiently long-ranged interaction energies are known to lead to anomalous diffusion, $ \sim t^{1-δ}$, in the absence of reaction. Applying renormalization group theory to a field theoretic description of this reaction, we find that this disorder also leads to anomalous kinetics in the long time limit: $c(t) \sim t^{δ-1}$. This kinetics results because the disorder forces the system into the (sub)diffusion controlled regime, in which the kinetics must become anomalous.

Renormalization of Fluctuating Tilted-Hexatic Membranes

We consider the tilted-hexatic Hamiltonian on the fluctuating membranes. A renormalization-group analysis leads us to find two critical regions; one corresponds to the strong coupling regime of the gradient cross coupling, the other to the weak coupling regime. In the strong coupling regime, we find the locked tilted-hexatic to liquid phase transition when disclinations and vortices unbind simultaneously. On the other hand, in the weak coupling regime we find four phases; the unlocked tilted-hexatic phase, the hexatic phase, the tilted phase, and liquid phase. Disclinations and vortices unbind independently. The crinkled-to-crumpled transition of the fluctuating tilted-hexatic membranes is also described. The crinkled phase in the strong coupling regime is stiffer than that in the weak coupling regime.

Shape Changes of Deformable Spherical Membranes with $n$-atic Order

We present the existence of the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) transition for $n$-atic tangent-plane order on a deformable spherical surface and investigate the development of quasi-long range $n$-atic order and the continuous shape changes below the KT transition in the low temperature limit. The $n$-atic order parameter $ψ= \exp[inΘ]$ describes, respectively, vector, nematic, and hexatic order for $n=1,2,$ and 6. We derive a Coulomb gas Hamiltonian to describe it. We then convert it into the sine-Gordon Hamiltonian and find a linear coupling between a scalar field and the Gaussian curvature. After integrating over the shape fluctuations, we obtain the massive sine-Gordon Hamiltonian, where the interaction between vortices is screened. We find, for $n^{2}K_{n}/κ\ll 1/4$, there is an effective KT transition. In the ordered phase, tangent-plane $n$-atic order expels the Gaussian curvature. In addition, the total vorticity of orientational order on a surface of genus zero is two. Thus, the ordered phase of an $n$-atic on such a surface will have $2n$ vortices of strength $1/n$, $2n$ zeros in its order parameter, and a nonspherical equilibrium shape. Our calculations are based on a phenomenological model with a gauge-like coupling between $ψ$ and curvature and close to the Abrikosov treatment of a type II superconductor.

The Kosterlitz-Thouless Transitions on Fluctuating Surface of Genus Zero

We investigate the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition for hexatic order on a fluctuating spherical surface of genus zero and derive a Coulomb gas Hamiltonian to describe it. In the Coulomb gas Hamiltonian, charge densities arises from disclinations and from Gaussian curvature. There is an interaction coupling the difference between these two densities, whose strength is determined by the hexatic rigidity. We then convert it into the sine-Gordon Hamiltonian and find a linear coupling between a scalar field and the Gaussian curvature. After integrating over the shape fluctuations, we obtain the massive sine-Gordon Hamiltonian, which corresponds to a neutral Yukawa gas, and the interaction between the disclinations is screened. We find, for $K_{A}/κ\gg 1/2$ where $K_{A}$ and $κ$ are hexatic and bending rigidity, respectively, the transition is supressed altogether, much as the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition is supressed in an infinite 2D superconductor. If on the other hand $K_{A}/κ\ll 1/2$, there can be an effective transition.

n-atic Order and Continuous Shape Changes of Deformable Surfaces of Genus Zero

We consider in mean-field theory the continuous development below a second-order phase transition of $n$-atic tangent plane order on a deformable surface of genus zero with order parameter $ψ= \langle e^{i n θ} \rangle$. Tangent plane order expels Gaussian curvature. Our calculations are based on a phenomenological model with a gauge-like coupling between $ψ$ and curvature, and our analysis follows closely the Abrikosov treatment of a type II superconductor just below $H_{c2}$.

Interactions between Membrane Inclusions on Fluctuating Membranes

We model membrane proteins as anisotropic objects characterized by symmetric-traceless tensors and determine the coupling between these order-parameters and membrane curvature. We consider the interactions between transmembrane proteins that respect up-down (reflection) symmetry of bilayer membranes and that have circular or non-circular cross-sectional areas in the tangent-plane of membranes. Using a field theoretic approach, we find non-entropic $1/R^{4}$ interactions between reflection-symmetry-breaking transmembrane proteins with circular cross-sectional area and entropic $1/R^{4}$ interactions between transmembrane proteins with circular cross-section that do not break up-down symmetry in agreement with previous calculations. We also find anisotropic $1/R^{4}$ interactions between reflection-symmetry-conserving transmembrane proteins with non-circular cross-section, anisotropic $1/R^{2}$ interactions between reflection-symmetry-breaking transmembrane proteins with non-circular cross-section, and non-entropic $1/R^{4}$ many-particle interactions among non-transmembrane proteins. For large $R$, these interactions might provide the dominant force inducing aggregation of the membrane proteins.

Disclination Asymmetry in Deformable Hexatic Membranes and the Kosterlitz-Thouless Transitions

A disclination in a hexatic membrane favors the development of Gaussian curvature localized near its core. The resulting global structure of the membrane has mean curvature, which is disfavored by curvature energy. Thus a membrane with an isolated disclination undergoes a buckling transition from a flat to a buckled state as the ratio $κ/K_{A}$ of the bending rigidity $κ$ to the hexatic rigidity $K_{A}$ is decreased. In this paper we calculate the buckling transition and the energy of both a positive and a negative disclination. A negative disclination has a larger energy and a smaller critical value of $κ/K_{A}$ at buckling than does a positive disclination. We use our results to obtain a crude estimate of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature in a membrane. This estimate is higher than the transition temperature recently obtained by the authors in a renormalization calculation.

Kosterlitz-Thouless Transitions on Fluctuating Surfaces

We investigate the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition for hexatic order on a free fluctuating membrane and derive both a Coulomb gas and a sine-Gordon Hamiltonian to describe it. In the former, both disclinations and Gaussian curvature contribute to the charge density. In the latter, there is a linear coupling between a scalar field and the Gaussian curvature. We derive renormalization group recursion relations that predict a transition with decreasing bending rigidity $κ$. Using the sine-Gordon model, we show that there is no KT transition on a deformable sphere.

Topological Defects on Fluctuating Surfaces: General Properties and the Kosterlitz-Thouless Transition

We investigate the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition for hexatic order on a free fluctuating membrane and derive both a Coulomb gas and a sine-Gordon Hamiltonian to describe it. The Coulomb-gas Hamiltonian includes charge densities arising from disclinations and from Gaussian curvature. There is an interaction coupling the difference between these two densities, whose strength is determined by the hexatic rigidity, and an interaction coupling Gaussian curvature densities arising from the Liouville Hamiltonian resulting from the imposition of a covariant cutoff. In the sine-Gordon Hamiltonian, there is a linear coupling between a scalar field and the Gaussian curvature. We discuss gauge-invariant correlation function for hexatic order and the dielectric constant of the Coulomb gas. We also derive renormalization group recursion relations that predict a transition with decreasing bending rigidity $κ$.

Sine-Gordon Field Theory for the Kosterlitz-Thouless Transitions on Fluctuating Membranes

In the preceding paper, we derived Coulomb-gas and sine-Gordon Hamiltonians to describe the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition on a fluctuating surface. These Hamiltonians contain couplings to Gaussian curvature not found in a rigid flat surface. In this paper, we derive renormalization-group recursion relations for the sine-Gordon model using field-theoretic techniques developed to study flat space problems.
