Moment-Fourier approach to ion parallel fluid closures and transport for a toroidally confined plasma

A general method of solving the drift kinetic equation is developed for an axisymmetric magnetic field. Expanding a distribution function in general moments a set of ordinary differential equations are obtained. Successively expanding the moments and magnetic-field involved quantities in Fourier series, a set of linear algebraic equations is obtained. The set of full (Maxwellian and non-Maxwellian) moment equations is solved to express the density, temperature, and flow velocity perturbations in terms of radial gradients of equilibrium pressure and temperature. Closure relations that connect parallel heat flux density and viscosity to the radial gradients and parallel gradients of temperature and flow velocity, are also obtained by solving the non-Maxwellian moment equations. The closure relations combined with the linearized fluid equations reproduce the same solution obtained directly from the full moment equations. The method can be generalized to derive closures and transport for an electron-ion plasma and a multi-ion plasma in a general magnetic field.

Electron parallel closures for arbitrary collisionality

Electron parallel closures for heat flow, viscosity, and friction force are expressed as kernel-weighted integrals of thermodynamic drives, the temperature gradient, relative electron-ion flow velocity, and flow-velocity gradient. Simple, fitted kernel functions are obtained for arbitrary collisionality from the 6400 moment solution and the asymptotic behavior in the collisionless limit. The fitted kernels circumvent having to solve higher order moment equations in order to close the electron fluid equations. For this reason, the electron parallel closures provide a useful and general tool for theoretical and computational models of astrophysical and laboratory plasmas.

Electron parallel closures for various ion charge numbers

Electron parallel closures for the ion charge number $Z=1$ [J.-Y. Ji and E. D. Held, Phys. Plasmas \textbf{21}, 122116 (2014)] are extended for $1\le Z\le10$. Parameters are computed for various $Z$ with the same form of the $Z=1$ kernels adopted. The parameters are smoothly varying in $Z$ and hence can be used to interpolate parameters and closures for noninteger, effective ion charge numbers.

Ion parallel closures

Ion parallel closures are obtained for arbitrary atomic weights and charge numbers. For arbitrary collisionality, the heat flow and viscosity are expressed as kernel-weighted integrals of the temperature and flow-velocity gradients. Simple, fitted kernel functions are obtained from the 1600 parallel moment solution and the asymptotic behavior in the collisionless limit. The fitted kernel parameters are tabulated for various temperature ratios of ions to electrons. The closures can be used conveniently without solving the kinetic equation or higher order moment equations in closing ion fluid equations.

Low temperature silicon epitaxy on hydrogen terminated Si(100) surfaces

Si deposition on H terminated Si(100)-2x1 and 3x1 surfaces at temperatures 300-530 K is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy. Hydrogen apparently hinders Si adatom diffusion and enhances surface roughening. The post-growth annealing effect is analyzed. Hydrogen is shown to remain on the growth front up to at least 10 ML. The dihydride units on the 3x1 surfaces further suppress the Si adatom diffusion and increase surface roughness.

The Generalized Quantum Statistics

The concept of wavefunction reduction should be introduced to standard quantum mechanics in any physical processes where effective reduction of wavefunction occurs, as well as in the measurement processes. When the overlap is negligible, each particle obey Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics even if the particles are in principle described by totally symmetrized wavefunction [P.R.Holland, The Quantum Theory of Motion, Cambridge Unversity Press, 1993, p293]. We generalize the conjecture. That is, particles obey some generalized statistics that contains the quantum and classical statistics as special cases, where the degree of overlapping determines the statistics that particles should obey among continuous generalized statistics. We present an example consistent with the conjecture.

Power-Laws in Nonlinear Granular Chain under Gravity

The signal generated by a weak impulse propagates in an oscillatory way and dispersively in a gravitationally compacted granular chain. For the power-law type contact force, we show analytically that the type of dispersion follows power-laws in depth. The power-law for grain displacement signal is given by $h^{-1/4(1-1/p)}$ where $h$ and $p$ denote depth and the exponent of contact force, and the power-law for the grain velocity is $h^{-1/4({1/3}+1/p)}$. Other depth-dependent power-laws for oscillation frequency, wavelength, and period are given by combining above two and the phase velocity power-law $h^{1/2(1-1/p)}$. We verify above power-laws by comparing with the data obtained by numerical simulations.

Action and entropy of black holes in spacetimes with a cosmological constant

In the Euclidean path integral approach, we calculate the actions and the entropies for the Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter solutions. When the temperatures of black hole and cosmological horizons are equal, the entropy is the sum of one-quarter areas of black hole and cosmological horizons; when the inner and outer black hole horizons coincide, the entropy is only one-quarter area of cosmological horizon; and the entropy vanishes when the two black hole horizons and cosmological horizon coincide. We also calculate the Euler numbers of the corresponding Euclidean manifolds, and discuss the relationship between the entropy of instanton and the Euler number.

Hairs on the cosmological horizon

We investigate the possibility of having hairs on the cosmological horizon. The cosmological horizon shares similar properties of black hole horizons in the aspect of having hairs on the horizons. For those theories admitting haired black hole solutions, the nontrivial matter fields may reach and extend beyond the cosmological horizon. For Q-stars and boson stars, the matter fields cannot reach the cosmological horizon. The no short hair conjecture keeps valid, despite the asymptotic behavior (de Sitter or anti-de Sitter) of black hole solutions. We prove the no scalar hair theorem for anti-de Sitter black holes. Using the Bekenstein's identity method, we also prove the no scalar hair theorem for the de Sitter space and de Sitter black holes if the scalar potential is convex.

Topological dilaton black holes

In four-dimensional spacetime, when the two-sphere of black hole event horizons is replaced by a two-dimensional hypersurface with zero or negative constant curvature, the black hole is referred to as a topological black hole. In this paper we present some exact topological black hole solutions in the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with a Liouville-type dilaton potential.

Ultrarelativistic limits of boosted dilaton black holes

We investigate the ultrarelativistic limits of dilaton black holes, black $p$-branes (strings), multi-centered dilaton black hole solutions and black $p$-brane (string) solutions when the boost velocity approaches the speed of light. For dilaton black holes and black $p$-branes (boost is along the transverse directions), the resulting geometries are gravitational shock wave solutions generated by a single particle and membrane. For the multi-centered dilaton black hole solutions and black $p$-brane solutions (boost is along the transverse directions), the limiting geometries are shock wave solutions generated by multiple particles and membranes. When the boost is along the membrane directions, for the black $p$-brane and multi-centered black $p$-brane solution, the resulting geometries describe general plane-fronted waves propagating along the membranes. The effect of the dilaton on the limit is considered.

Parametrically amplified radiation in a cavity with an oscillating wall

We introduce a time-dependent perturbation method to calculate the number of created particles in a 1D cavity with an oscillating wall of the frequency $Ω. $ This method makes it easy to find the dominant part of the solution which results from the parametric resonance. The maximal number of particles are created at the mode frequency $Ω/2 . $ Using the Floquet theory, we discuss the long-time behavior of the particle creation.

Electromagnetic fields in a 3D cavity and in a waveguide with oscillating walls

We consider classical and quantum electromagnetic fields in a three-dimensional (3D) cavity and in a waveguide with oscillating boundaries of the frequency $Ω$. The photons created by the parametric resonance are distributed in the wave number space around $Ω/2 $ along the axis of the oscillation. When classical waves propagate along the waveguide in the one direction, we observe the amplification of the original waves and another wave generation in the opposite direction by the oscillation of side walls. This can be understood as the classical counterpart of the photon production. In the case of two opposite walls oscillating with the same frequency but with a phase difference, the interferences are shown to occur due to the phase difference in the photon numbers and in the intensity of the generated waves.

Interference phenomena in the photon production between two oscillating walls

We study the photon production in a 1D cavity whose left and right walls oscillate with the frequency $Ω_{L} $ and $Ω_{R} $, respectively. For $Ω_{L} \neq Ω_{R}, $ the number of generated photons by the parametric resonance is the sum of the photon numbers produced when the left and the right wall oscillates separately. But for $Ω_{L} = Ω_{R} $, the interference term proportional to $\cos ϕ$ is found additionally, where $ϕ$ is the phase difference between two oscillations of the walls.

The origin of the area law of the entropy of a quantum field in a black hole

It is shown that that the area law for the entropy of a quantum field in the Schwarzschild black hole is due to the quantum statistics. The entropies for one particle, a Boltzmann gas, a quantum mechanical gas obeying Bose-Einstein or Fermi-Dirac statistics, and a quantum field in the Schwarzschild black hole are calculated using the microcanonical ensemble approach and the brick wall method. The area law holds only when the effect of quantum statistics is dominated.

Production of photons by the parametric resonance in the dynamical Casimir effect

We calculate the number of photons produced by the parametric resonance in a cavity with vibrating walls. We consider the case that the frequency of vibrating wall is $n ω_1 (n=1,2,3,...)$ which is a generalization of other works considering only $2 ω_1$, where $ω_1$ is the fundamental-mode frequency of the electromagnetic field in the cavity. For the calculation of time-evolution of quantum fields, we introduce a new method which is borrowed from the time-dependent perturbation theory of the usual quantum mechanics. This perturbation method makes it possible to calculate the photon number for any $n$ and to observe clearly the effect of the parametric resonance.
