Rigidity of compact four-dimensional weakly Einstein Ricci Solitons

We prove that every compact four-dimensional weakly Einstein Ricci soliton is Einstein. The nontrivial compact case reduces to the gradient shrinking setting, where a differential identity for weakly Einstein four-manifolds, together with the curvature identity for gradient Ricci solitons, yields the pointwise relation $|R|^2\nabla f=0$ for the soliton potential $f$. Consequently, no compact proper weakly Einstein four-manifold admits a Ricci soliton structure. A noncompact homogeneous example shows that the compactness assumption is essential.

Almost-product Kähler surfaces

We study the case where the tangent bundle of a Kähler surface splits orthogonally into two integrable complex-line subbundles. This amounts to the presence of a unit-length closed anti-self-dual 2-form, leading in turn to a curvature condition. Therefore, such a decomposition need not exist, even locally, in contrast with general Riemannian four-manifolds which, under the assumption of real-analyticity, were shown by Grant and Vickers [11] to always admit, locally, two mutually orthogonal integrable rank-two distributions. We exhibit local coordinates naturally adapted to a decomposition as above in a Kähler surface, which may be used for simple constructions of examples. We also provide a characterization of the Kähler case within the wider class of almost-Kähler surfaces arising from the coordinates just mentioned. The characterization involves a system of four first-order quasilinear partial differential equations imposed on four unknown functions of four variables and, using Cartan's test, we prove the system's local solvability. Finally, we show that, for such a decomposition in a Kähler surface, one of the summands is holomorphic if and only if the other one has totally geodesic leaves, and describe a general construction of examples with this last property.

Scalar-flat Kähler surfaces whose Weyl tensor annihilates the Ricci form

We conjecture that any scalar-flat Kähler surface in which the Weyl tensor acting on 2-forms annihilates the Ricci form must be either Ricci-flat or locally isometric to a Riemannian product of two real surfaces with mutually opposite nonzero constant Gaussian curvatures. This amounts to the nonexistence of proper weakly Einstein anti-self-dual Kähler surfaces. We prove the above conjecture in three special cases: when the manifold is compact, when one of the Ricci eigendistributions is integrable, and when the norms of the Ricci and Weyl tensors are functionally dependent

Weakly Einstein curvature tensors

We classify weakly Einstein algebraic curvature tensors in an oriented Euclidean 4-space, defined by requiring that the three-index contraction of the curvature tensor against itself be a multiple of the inner product. This algebraic formulation parallels the geometric notion of weakly Einstein Riemannian four-manifolds, which include conformally flat scalar-flat, and Einstein manifolds. Our main result provides a complete classification of non-Einstein weakly Einstein curvature tensors in dimension four, naturally dividing them into three disjoint five-dimensional families of algebraic types. These types are explicitly constructed using bases that simultaneously diagonalize both the Einstein tensor and the (anti)self-dual Weyl tensors, which consequently proves that such simultaneous diagonalizability follows from the weakly Einstein property. We also point out that our classification has immediate applications, and describe how some known geometric examples that are neither Einstein, nor conformally flat scalar-flat (namely, the EPS space and certain Kähler surfaces) fit within our classification framework.

Critical metrics for the quadratic curvature functional on complete four-dimensional manifolds

We study critical metrics of the curvature functional $\A(g)=\int_M |R|^2\, \vol$, on complete four-dimensional Riemannian manifolds $(M,g)$ with finite energy, that is, $\A(g)<\infty$. Under the natural inequality condition on the curvature operator of the second kind associated with the trace-free Ricci tensor, we prove that $(M,g)$ is either Einstein or locally isometric to a Riemannian product of two-dimensional manifolds of constant Gaussian curvatures $c$ and $-c$ $(c\ne 0)$. This extends the compact classification of four-dimensional $\mathcal{A}$-critical metrics obtained in earlier work to the complete setting.

Weakly Einstein conformal products

One says that a Riemannian four-manifold is \emph{weakly Einstein} if the three-index contraction of its curvature tensor against itself equals a function times the metric. Since this includes all four-manifolds that are Einstein, or conformally flat and scalar-flat, the term \emph{proper} may be used for weakly Einstein manifolds (or metrics) not belonging to the latter two classes. We establish two classification-type results about proper weakly Einstein metrics conformal to Riemannian products. This includes constructions of new examples, among them -- some of (local) cohomogeneity two, in contrast with the two previously known narrow classes of examples, having cohomogeneity zero and one. We also exhibit a simple coordinate description of one of the known examples, the EPS space, which shows that it is a conformal product and constitutes a single local-homothety type. Finally, we prove that there exist no proper weakly Einstein manifolds with harmonic curvature.

Horospherical mean curvature functions and D'Atri spaces

We consider simply connected Riemannian manifolds without conjugate points for which the horospherical mean curvature function is continuous, reversible and invariant under the geodesic flow. We show under mild additional curvature tensor conditions that rank one manifolds in this family are automatically asymptotically harmonic. In particular, compact rank one manifolds of this kind must be locally symmetric spaces of negative curvature. Moreover, we show under the same conditions that rank one D'Atri spaces without conjugate points are harmonic. An earlier result of this type was proved by Druetta for certain homogeneous D'Atri spaces.

Higher order obstructions to Riccati-type equations

We develop new techniques in order to deal with Riccati-type equations, subject to a further algebraic constraint, on Riemannian manifolds $(M^3,g)$. We find that the obstruction to solve the aforementioned equation has order $4$ in the metric coefficients and is fully described by an homogeneous polynomial in $\mathrm{Sym}^{16}TM$. Techniques from real algebraic geometry, reminiscent of those used for the "PositiveStellen-Satz " problem, allow determining the geometry in terms of the connection coefficients and a class of Hessian-type equations. Analysis of the latter shows flatness for the metric $g$; in particular we complete the classification of asymptotically harmonic manifolds of dimension $3$, establishing those are either flat or real hyperbolic spaces.

On weakly Einstein Kähler surfaces

Riemannian four-manifolds in which the triple contraction of the curvature tensor against itself yields a functional multiple of the metric are called weakly Einstein. We focus on weakly Einstein Kähler surfaces. We provide several conditions characterizing those Kähler surfaces which are weakly Einstein, classify weakly Einstein Kähler surfaces having some specific additional properties, and construct new examples.

Weakly Einstein hypersurfaces in space forms

A Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ is called \emph{weakly Einstein} if the tensor $R_{iabc}R_{j}^{~~abc}$ is a scalar multiple of the metric tensor $g_{ij}$. We give a complete classification of weakly Einstein hypersurfaces in the spaces of nonzero constant curvature (the classification in a Euclidean space has been previously known). The main result states that such a hypersurface can only be the product of two spaces of constant curvature or a rotation hypersurface.

On weakly Einstein Lie groups

A Riemannian manifold is called \emph{weakly Einstein} if the tensor $R_{iabc}R_{j}^{~~abc}$ is a scalar multiple of the metric tensor $g_{ij}$. We consider weakly Einstein Lie groups with a left-invariant metric which are weakly Einstein. We prove that there exist no weakly Einstein non-abelian $2$-step nilpotent Lie groups and no weakly Einstein non-abelian nilpotent Lie groups whose dimension is at most $5$. We also prove that an almost abelian Lie group is weakly Einstein if and only if at the Lie algebra level it is defined by a normal operator whose square is a multiple of the identity.

4-dimensional Space forms as determined by the volumes of small geodesic balls

Gray-Vanhecke conjectured that the volumes of small geodesic balls could determine if the manifold is a space form, and provided a proof for the compact 4-dimensional manifold, and some cases. In this paper, similar results for the 4-dimensional case are obtained, based upon tensor calculus and classical theorems rather than the topological characterizations in [6].

On weakly Einstein submanifolds in space forms satisfying certain equalities

We classify weakly Einstein submanifolds in space forms that satisfy Chen's equality. We also give a classification of weakly Einstein hypersurfaces in space forms that satisfy the semisymmetric condition. In addition, we discuss some characterizations of weakly Einstein submanifolds in space forms whose normal connection is flat.

Asymptotically harmonic manifolds of dimension 3 with minimal horospheres

In [14], it was shown that, if M is a 3-dimensional asymptotically harmonic with minimal horospheres, then M is flat. However, there is a gap in the proof of this paper. In this paper, we provide the correct proof of the result. Thus we complete the classification of asymptotically harmonic manifolds of dimension 3: An asymptotically harmonic manifold of dimension 3 is either a flat or real hyperbolic space.

Two theorems on the intersections of horospheres in asymptotically harmonic spaces

We use Busemann functions to construct volume preserving mappings in an asymptotically harmonic manifold. If the asymptotically harmonic manifold satisfies the visibility condition, we construct mappings which preserve distances in some directions. We also prove that some integrals on the intersection of horospheres are independent of the differences between the values of the corresponding Busemann functions and we establish an upper bound of the volume of the intersection of two horospheres which is independent of the difference between values of corresponding Busemann functions.

Curvature identities for Einstein manifolds of dimension 5 and 6

Patterson discussed the curvature identities on Riemannian manifolds in [14], and a curvature identity for any 6-dimensional Riemannian manifold was independently derived from the Chern-Gauss-Bonnet Theorem [8]. In this paper, we provide the explicit formulae of Patterson's curvature identity that holds on 5-dimensional and 6-dimensional Einstein manifolds. We confirm that the curvature identities on the Einstein manifold from the previous work [8] are the same as the curvature identities deduced from Patterson's result. We also provide examples that support the theorems.
