Numerical approximation of distributed optimal control problems governed by linear thermo-poroelasticity

In this paper, we propose and analyze a novel three-field symmetric formulation for optimal control problems governed by linear thermo-poroelasticity. The state variables are the solid displacement $\boldsymbol{u}$, the fluid pressure $p$, and the temperature $θ$, and both the distributed fluid source $m_p$ and the distributed heat source $m_θ$ serve as control variables. We prove well-posedness of the symmetric differentiated formulation, establish the existence and uniqueness of an optimal control pair $(\bar{m}_p,\bar{m}_θ)$, and derive the first-order necessary optimality conditions via a coupled three-field adjoint system. For the fully discrete scheme based on dG(0) time discretization, we employ a variational discretization approach for both controls and derive a priori error estimates of order $\mathcal{O}(h^s + Δt)$ for the state, adjoint, and control errors. We also present manufactured-solution experiments that validate the fully discrete optimality system and illustrate the storage-degenerate regime covered by our analysis.

Distributed optimal control problems governed by poroelasticity equations

In this paper, we propose and analyze a novel two-field symmetric formulation with solid displacement and fluid pressure as main unknowns for the Biot's consolidation model in poroelasticity. Firstly, we prove the well-posedness of the new formulation and then show the existence and uniqueness of optimal control where the fluid sources in the model act as a control variable. We prove a priori error estimates for the fully discrete scheme with backward Euler time discretization and a variational approximation of the control variable. A numerical example is presented to validate the performance of the proposed novel scheme.

Hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin methods for poroelastic wave propagation with symmetric stress approximation

In this paper, we develop hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods for poroelastic wave equations. We first rewrite the governing equations to a first-order symmetric hyperbolic system in order to use dual mixed formulations for discretization. Subsequently, we combine two HDG approaches in the discretization of the system, the $\text{HDG}+$ method for the linear elasticity equations and the $\text{LDG-H}$ method for the diffusion equations, with adjustments for the poroelastic wave equations. In our proposed HDG methods, the numerical approximation of the stress tensor is strongly symmetric and the convergence of the errors are robust for nearly incompressible materials. Upon performing static condensation, the system retains numerical trace variables solely for the solid displacement and the fluid pressure. We provide comprehensive error analyses for both the semidiscrete formulation and the Crank--Nicolson time-stepping scheme. Finally, extensive numerical examples illustrate optimal convergence results and simulate different poroelastic wave propagation scenarios relevant in the literature.

Preconditioning of a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the coupled Stokes--Darcy system

We propose parameter-robust preconditioners for the statically condensed linear system arising from a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin discretization of the coupled Stokes--Darcy system. The design strategy relies on first applying the operator-preconditioning framework [Numer. Linear Algebra Appl., 18(1):1--40, 2011] to construct a preconditioner for the non-condensed discretization. This is done by proving uniform well-posedness of the scheme. Next, we prove robustness of the resulting condensed preconditioner applied to the reduced linear system using the framework we proposed in [SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 47(6):A3212--A3238, 2025]. Numerical examples demonstrate robustness of the proposed preconditioners.

Robust preconditioning for an HDG discretization of the time-dependent Stokes equations

We present parameter-robust preconditioners for linear systems that arise after applying static condensation to a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretization of the time-dependent Stokes problem. Building upon the theoretical framework introduced in our previous work [SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing, 47(6):A3212-A3238, 2025], we extend the analysis to derive new preconditioners that remain robust with respect to all physical and discretization parameters. The construction relies on first establishing uniform well-posedness of the HDG formulation (before static condensation) through appropriately defined norms. Based on this result, we identify sufficient conditions that a norm on the face space must satisfy to guarantee parameter-robustness of the resulting preconditioner for the statically condensed HDG system. Numerical experiments in two and three dimensions verify our theoretical results.

Preconditioning of a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for Biot's consolidation model

We present a parameter-robust preconditioner for a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretization of a four-field formulation of Biot's consolidation model. We first determine a parameter-robust preconditioner for the full discretization. HDG methods, however, allow for static condensation. We therefore apply the framework presented in our previous work [arXiv:2503.05918, 2025] to show that a reduced form of the preconditioner is also parameter-robust for the reduced HDG discretization. We verify the parameter-robustness of the preconditioner through numerical examples in both two and three dimensions.

The Johnson-Krizek-Mercier elasticity element in any dimensions

Mixed methods for linear elasticity with strongly symmetric stresses of lowest order are studied in this paper. On each simplex, the stress space has piecewise linear components with respect to its Alfeld split (which connects the vertices to barycenter), generalizing the Johnson--Mercier two-dimensional element to higher dimensions. Further reductions in the stress space in the three-dimensional case (to 24 degrees of freedom per tetrahedron) are possible when the displacement space is reduced to local rigid displacements. Proofs of optimal error estimates of numerical solutions and improved error estimates via postprocessing and the duality argument are presented.

Parameter-robust preconditioning for hybridizable symmetric discretizations

Hybridizable discretizations allow for the elimination of local degrees-of-freedom leading to reduced linear systems. In this paper, we determine and analyse an approach to construct parameter-robust preconditioners for these reduced systems. Using the framework of Mardal and Winther (Numer. Linear Algebra Appl., 18(1):1--40, 2011) we first determine a parameter-robust preconditioner for the full system. We then eliminate the local degrees-of-freedom of this preconditioner to obtain a preconditioner for the reduced system. However, not all reduced preconditioners obtained in this way are automatically robust. We therefore present conditions that must be satisfied for the reduced preconditioner to be robust. To demonstrate our approach, we determine preconditioners for the reduced systems obtained from hybridizable discretizations of the Darcy and Stokes equations. Our analysis is verified by numerical examples in two and three dimensions.

A coupled HDG/DG method for porous media with conducting/sealing faults

We introduce and analyze a coupled hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin/discontinuous Galerkin (HDG/DG) method for porous media in which we allow fully and partly immersed faults, and faults that separate the domain into two disjoint subdomains. We prove well-posedness and present an a priori error analysis of the discretization. Numerical examples verify our analysis.

A posteriori error estimates of Darcy flows with Robin-type jump interface conditions

In this work we develop an a posteriori error estimator for mixed finite element methods of Darcy flow problems with Robin-type jump interface conditions. We construct an energy-norm type a posteriori error estimator using the Stenberg post-processing. The reliability of the estimator is proved using an interface-adapted Helmholtz-type decomposition and an interface-adapted Scott--Zhang type interpolation operator. A local efficiency and the reliability of post-processed pressure are also proved. Numerical results illustrating adaptivity algorithms using our estimator are included.

Interior over-penalized enriched Galerkin methods for second order elliptic equations

In this paper we propose a variant of enriched Galerkin methods for second order elliptic equations with over-penalization of interior jump terms. The bilinear form with interior over-penalization gives a non-standard norm which is different from the discrete energy norm in the classical discontinuous Galerkin methods. Nonetheless we prove that optimal a priori error estimates with the standard discrete energy norm can be obtained by combining a priori and a posteriori error analysis techniques. We also show that the interior over-penalization is advantageous for constructing preconditioners robust to mesh refinement by analyzing spectral equivalence of bilinear forms. Numerical results are included to illustrate the convergence and preconditioning results.

In this paper we present a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations coupled to the quasi-static poroelasticity equations via interface conditions. We determine a bound on the data that guarantees stability and well-posedness of the fully discrete problem and prove a priori error estimates. A numerical example confirms our analysis.

A hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the dual-porosity-Stokes problem

We introduce and analyze a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for the dual-porosity-Stokes problem. This coupled problem describes the interaction between free flow in macrofractures/conduits, governed by the Stokes equations, and flow in microfractures/matrix, governed by a dual-porosity model. We prove that the HDG method is strongly conservative, well-posed, and give an a priori error analysis showing dependence on the problem parameters. Our theoretical findings are corroborated by numerical examples

Coupling nonconforming and enriched Galerkin methods for robust discretization and fast solvers of poroelasticity problems

In this paper we propose a new finite element discretization for the two-field formulation of poroelasticity which uses the elastic displacement and the pore pressure as primary variables. The main goal is to develop a numerical method with small problem sizes which still achieve key features such as parameter-robustness, local mass conservation, and robust preconditionor construction. For this we combine a nonconforming finite element and the interior over-stabilized enriched Galerkin methods with a suitable stabilization term. Robust a priori error estimates and parameter-robust preconditioner construction are proved, and numerical results illustrate our theoretical findings.

Hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin methods for the coupled Stokes--Biot problem

We present and analyze a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) finite element method for the coupled Stokes--Biot problem. Of particular interest is that the discrete velocities and displacement are $H(\text{div})$-conforming and satisfy the compressibility equations pointwise on the elements. Furthermore, in the incompressible limit, the discretization is strongly conservative. We prove well-posedness of the discretization and, after combining the HDG method with backward Euler time stepping, present a priori error estimates that demonstrate that the method is free of volumetric locking. Numerical examples further demonstrate optimal rates of convergence in the $L^2$-norm for all unknowns and that the discretization is locking-free.

We develop mixed finite element methods for nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations with interfaces which have Robin-type interface conditions. We introduce the velocity of chemicals as new variables and reformulate the governing equations. The stability of semidiscrete solutions, existence and the a priori error estimates of fully discrete solutions are proved by fixed point theorem and continuous/discrete Gr${ö}$nwall inequalities. Numerical results illustrating our theoretical analysis are included.

Analysis of an embedded-hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for Biot's consolidation model

We present an embedded-hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the total pressure formulation of the quasi-static poroelasticity model. Although the displacement and the Darcy velocity are approximated by discontinuous piece-wise polynomials, $H(\text{div})$-conformity of these unknowns is enforced by Lagrange multipliers. The semi-discrete problem is shown to be stable and the fully discrete problem is shown to be well-posed. Additionally, space-time a priori error estimates are derived, and confirmed by numerical examples, that show that the proposed discretization is free of volumetric locking.

Parameter robust preconditioning by congruence for multiple-network poroelasticity

The mechanical behaviour of a poroelastic medium permeated by multiple interacting fluid networks can be described by a system of time-dependent partial differential equations known as the multiple-network poroelasticity (MPET) equations or multi-porosity/multi-permeability systems. These equations generalize Biot's equations, which describe the mechanics of the one-network case. The efficient numerical solution of the MPET equations is challenging, in part due to the complexity of the system and in part due to the presence of interacting parameter regimes. In this paper, we present a new strategy for efficiently and robustly solving the MPET equations numerically. In particular, we introduce a new approach to formulating finite element methods and associated preconditioners for the MPET equations. The approach is based on designing transformations of variables that simultaneously diagonalize (by congruence) the equations' key operators and subsequently constructing parameter-robust block-diagonal preconditioners for the transformed system. Our methodology is supported by theoretical considerations as well as by numerical results.
