Split-KalmanNet: A Robust Model-Based Deep Learning Approach for SLAM

Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) is a method that constructs a map of an unknown environment and localizes the position of a moving agent on the map simultaneously. Extended Kalman filter (EKF) has been widely adopted as a low complexity solution for online SLAM, which relies on a motion and measurement model of the moving agent. In practice, however, acquiring precise information about these models is very challenging, and the model mismatch effect causes severe performance loss in SLAM. In this paper, inspired by the recently proposed KalmanNet, we present a robust EKF algorithm using the power of deep learning for online SLAM, referred to as Split-KalmanNet. The key idea of Split-KalmanNet is to compute the Kalman gain using the Jacobian matrix of a measurement function and two recurrent neural networks (RNNs). The two RNNs independently learn the covariance matrices for a prior state estimate and the innovation from data. The proposed split structure in the computation of the Kalman gain allows to compensate for state and measurement model mismatch effects independently. Numerical simulation results verify that Split-KalmanNet outperforms the traditional EKF and the state-of-the-art KalmanNet algorithm in various model mismatch scenarios.

Block Orthogonal Sparse Superposition Codes for Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications

Low-rate and short-packet transmissions are important for ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC). In this paper, we put forth a new family of sparse superposition codes for URLLC, called block orthogonal sparse superposition (BOSS) codes. We first present a code construction method for the efficient encoding of BOSS codes. The key idea is to construct codewords by the superposition of the orthogonal columns of a dictionary matrix with a sequential bit mapping strategy. We also propose an approximate maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) decoder with two stages. The approximate MAP decoder reduces the decoding latency significantly via a parallel decoding structure while maintaining a comparable decoding complexity to the successive cancellation list (SCL) decoder of polar codes. Furthermore, to gauge the code performance in the finite-blocklength regime, we derive an exact analytical expression for block-error rates (BLERs) for single-layered BOSS codes in terms of relevant code parameters. Lastly, we present a cyclic redundancy check aided-BOSS (CA-BOSS) code with simple list decoding to boost the code performance. Our experiments verify that CA-BOSS with the simple list decoder outperforms CA-polar codes with SCL decoding in the low-rate and finite-blocklength regimes while achieving the finite-blocklength capacity upper bound within one dB of signal-to-noise ratio.

A Tractable Approach to Coverage Analysis in Downlink Satellite Networks

Satellite networks are promising to provide ubiquitous and high-capacity global wireless connectivity. Traditionally, satellite networks are modeled by placing satellites on a grid of multiple circular orbit geometries. Such a network model, however, requires intricate system-level simulations to evaluate coverage performance, and analytical understanding of the satellite network is limited. Continuing the success of stochastic geometry in a tractable analysis for terrestrial networks, in this paper, we develop novel models that are tractable for the coverage analysis of satellite networks using stochastic geometry. By modeling the locations of satellites and users using Poisson point processes on the surfaces of concentric spheres, we characterize analytical expressions for the coverage probability of a typical downlink user as a function of relevant parameters, including path-loss exponent, satellite height, density, and Nakagami fading parameter. Then, we also derive a tight lower bound of the coverage probability in tractable expression while keeping full generality. Leveraging the derived expression, we identify the optimal density of satellites in terms of the height and the path-loss exponent. Our key finding is that the optimal average number of satellites decreases logarithmically with the satellite height to maximize the coverage performance. Simulation results verify the exactness of the derived expressions.

Joint Optimization for Secure and Reliable Communications in Finite Blocklength Regime

To realize ultra-reliable low latency communications with high spectral efficiency and security, we investigate a joint optimization problem for downlink communications with multiple users and eavesdroppers in the finite blocklength (FBL) regime. We formulate a multi-objective optimization problem to maximize a sum secrecy rate by developing a secure precoder and to minimize a maximum error probability and information leakage rate. The main challenges arise from the complicated multi-objective problem, non-tractable back-off factors from the FBL assumption, non-convexity and non-smoothness of the secrecy rate, and the intertwined optimization variables. To address these challenges, we adopt an alternating optimization approach by decomposing the problem into two phases: secure precoding design, and maximum error probability and information leakage rate minimization. In the first phase, we obtain a lower bound of the secrecy rate and derive a first-order Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) condition to identify local optimal solutions with respect to the precoders. Interpreting the condition as a generalized eigenvalue problem, we solve the problem by using a power iteration-based method. In the second phase, we adopt a weighted-sum approach and derive KKT conditions in terms of the error probabilities and leakage rates for given precoders. Simulations validate the proposed algorithm.

Rate-Splitting Multiple Access for Quantized Multiuser MIMO Communications

This paper investigates the sum spectral efficiency maximization problem in downlink multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with low-resolution quantizers at an access point (AP) and users. In particular, we consider rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) to enhance spectral efficiency by offering opportunities to boost achievable degrees of freedom. Optimizing RSMA precoders, however, is highly challenging due to the minimum rate constraint when determining the rate of the common stream. The quantization errors coupled with the precoders further make the problem more complicated and difficult to solve. In this paper, we develop a novel RSMA precoding algorithm incorporating quantization errors for maximizing the sum spectral efficiency. To this end, we first obtain an approximate spectral efficiency in a smooth function. Subsequently, we derive the first-order optimality condition in the form of the nonlinear eigenvalue problem (NEP). We propose a computationally efficient algorithm to find the principal eigenvector of the NEP as a sub-optimal solution. Simulation results validate the superior spectral efficiency of the proposed method. The key benefit of using RSMA over spatial division multiple access (SDMA) comes from the ability of the common stream to balance between the channel gain and quantization error in multiuser MIMO systems with different quantization resolutions.

Joint Precoding and Artificial Noise Design for MU-MIMO Wiretap Channels

Secure precoding superimposed with artificial noise (AN) is a promising transmission technique to improve security by harnessing the superposition nature of the wireless medium. However, finding a jointly optimal precoding and AN structure is very challenging in downlink multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) wiretap channels with multiple eavesdroppers. The major challenge in maximizing the secrecy rate arises from the non-convexity and non-smoothness of the rate function. Traditionally, an alternating optimization framework that identifies beamforming vectors and AN covariance matrix has been adopted; yet this alternating approach has limitations in maximizing the secrecy rate. In this paper, we put forth a novel secure precoding algorithm that jointly and simultaneously optimizes the beams and AN covariance matrix for maximizing the secrecy rate when a transmitter has either perfect or partial channel knowledge of eavesdroppers. To this end, we first establish an approximate secrecy rate in a smooth function. Then, we derive the first-order optimality condition in the form of the nonlinear eigenvalue problem (NEP). We present a computationally efficient algorithm to identify the principal eigenvector of the NEP as a suboptimal solution for secure precoding. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed methods improve secrecy rate significantly compared to the existing secure precoding methods.

Rate-Splitting Multiple Access for Downlink MIMO: A Generalized Power Iteration Approach

Rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) is a general multiple access scheme for downlink multi-antenna systems embracing both classical spatial division multiple access and more recent non-orthogonal multiple access. Finding a linear precoding strategy that maximizes the sum spectral efficiency of RSMA is a challenging yet significant problem. In this paper, we put forth a novel precoder design framework that jointly finds the linear precoders for the common and private messages for RSMA. Our approach is first to approximate the non-smooth minimum function part in the sum spectral efficiency of RSMA using a LogSumExp technique. Then, we reformulate the sum spectral efficiency maximization problem as a form of the log-sum of Rayleigh quotients to convert it into a tractable form. By interpreting the first-order optimality condition of the reformulated problem as an eigenvector-dependent nonlinear eigenvalue problem, we reveal that the leading eigenvector of the derived optimality condition is a local optimal solution. To find the leading eigenvector, we propose an algorithm inspired by a power iteration. Simulation results show that the proposed RSMA transmission strategy provides significant improvement in the sum spectral efficiency compared to the state-of-the-art RSMA transmission methods.

Secure Transmission for Hierarchical Information Accessibility in Downlink MU-MIMO

Physical layer security is a useful tool to prevent confidential information from wiretapping. In this paper, we consider a generalized model of conventional physical layer security, referred to as hierarchical information accessibility (HIA). A main feature of the HIA model is that a network has a hierarchy in information accessibility, wherein decoding feasibility is determined by a priority of users. Under this HIA model, we formulate a sum secrecy rate maximization problem with regard to precoding vectors. This problem is challenging since multiple non-smooth functions are involved into the secrecy rate to fulfill the HIA conditions and also the problem is non-convex. To address the challenges, we approximate the minimum function by using the LogSumExp technique, thereafter obtain the first-order optimality condition. One key observation is that the derived condition is cast as a functional eigenvalue problem, where the eigenvalue is equivalent to the approximated objective function of the formulated problem. Accordingly, we show that finding a principal eigenvector is equivalent to finding a local optimal solution. To this end, we develop a novel method called generalized power iteration for HIA (GPI-HIA). Simulations demonstrate that the GPI-HIA significantly outperforms other baseline methods in terms of the secrecy rate.

Energy Efficiency Maximization Precoding for Quantized Massive MIMO Systems

The use of low-resolution digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital converters (DACs and ADCs) significantly benefits energy efficiency (EE) at the cost of high quantization noise in implementing massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. For maximizing EE in quantized downlink massive MIMO systems, this paper formulates a precoding optimization problem with antenna selection; yet acquiring the optimal joint precoding and antenna selection solution is challenging due to the intricate EE characterization. To resolve this challenge, we decompose the problem into precoding direction and power optimization problems. For precoding direction, we characterize the first-order optimality condition, which entails the effects of quantization distortion and antenna selection. For precoding power, we obtain the optimum solution using a gradient descent algorithm to maximize EE for given precoding direction. We cast the derived condition as a functional eigenvalue problem, wherein finding the principal eigenvector attains the best local optimal point. To this end, we propose generalized power iteration based algorithm. Alternating these two methods, our algorithm identifies a joint solution of the active antenna set and the precoding direction and power. In simulations, the proposed methods provide considerable performance gains. Our results suggest that a few-bit DACs are sufficient for achieving high EE in massive MIMO systems.

Sparse Joint Transmission for Cell-Free Massive MIMO: A Sparse PCA Approach

Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a promising cellular network. In this network, a large number of distributed and multi-antenna access points (APs) jointly serve many single antenna users using the same time-frequency resource. Consequently, it possibly provides a uniform service experience to users regardless of the users' locations by eliminating interference at cell boundaries via user-centric joint transmission. This joint transmission, however, requires extremely high signaling overheads for data sharing via backhaul links and causes a high network-wide power consumption. To resolve these problems, in this paper, we present a novel joint transmission method, which is referred to as sparse joint transmission (sparse-JT), for cell-free massive MIMO networks with finite backhaul capacity constraints. Sparse-JT jointly identifies the user-centric cooperative APs sets, precoding vectors for beamforming and compression, and power allocation that maximizes a lower bound of the sum-spectral efficiency under the constraint that a total number of active APs per the joint transmission is sparse. The proposed algorithm guarantees to identify a local-optimal solution for a relaxed sum-spectral maximization problem. By simulations, we show that sparse-JT achieves higher ergodic spectral efficiencies than those attained by multi-cell zero-forcing precoding with the user-centric AP clustering algorithm in all system configurations.

Sparse Joint Transmission for Cloud Radio Access Networks with Limited Fronthaul Capacity

A cloud radio access network (C-RAN) is a promising cellular network, wherein densely deployed multi-antenna remote-radio-heads (RRHs) jointly serve many users using the same time-frequency resource. By extremely high signaling overheads for both channel state information (CSI) acquisition and data sharing at a baseband unit (BBU), finding a joint transmission strategy with a significantly reduced signaling overhead is indispensable to achieve the cooperation gain in practical C-RANs. In this paper, we present a novel sparse joint transmission (sparse-JT) method for C-RANs, where the number of transmit antennas per unit area is much larger than the active downlink user density. Considering the effects of noisy-and-incomplete CSI and the quantization errors in data sharing by a finite-rate fronthaul capacity, the key innovation of sparse-JT is to find a joint solution for cooperative RRH clusters, beamforming vectors, and power allocation to maximize a lower bound of the sum-spectral efficiency under the sparsity constraint of active RRHs. To find such a solution, we present a computationally efficient algorithm that guarantees to find a local-optimal solution for a relaxed sum-spectral efficiency maximization problem. By system-level simulations, we exhibit that sparse-JT provides significant gains in ergodic spectral efficiencies compared to existing joint transmissions.

Precoding Design for Multi-user MIMO Systems with Delay-Constrained and -Tolerant Users

In both academia and industry, multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) techniques have shown enormous gains in spectral efficiency by exploiting spatial degrees of freedom. So far, an underlying assumption in most of the existing MU-MIMO design has been that all the users use infinite blocklength, so that they can achieve the Shannon capacity. This setup, however, is not suitable considering delay-constrained users whose blocklength tends to be finite. In this paper, we consider a heterogeneous setting in MU-MIMO systems where delay-constrained users and delay-tolerant users coexist, called a DCTU-MIMO network. To maximize the sum spectral efficiency in this system, we present the spectral efficiency for delay-tolerant users and provide a lower bound of the spectral efficiency for delay-constrained users. We consider an optimization problem that maximizes the sum spectral efficiency of delay-tolerant users while satisfying the latency constraint of delay-constrained users, and propose a generalized power iteration (GPI) precoding algorithm that finds a principal precoding vector. Furthermore, we extend a DCTU-MIMO network to the multiple time slots scenario and propose a recursive generalized power iteration precoding algorithm. In simulation results, we prove proposed methods outperform baseline schemes and present the effect of network parameters on the ergodic sum spectral efficiency.

Orthogonal Sparse Superposition Codes for Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications

This paper presents a new class of sparse superposition codes for low-rates and short-packet communications over the additive white Gaussian noise channel. The new code is orthogonal sparse superposition (OSS) code. A codeword of OSS codes is represented as a superposition of sparse sub-codewords whose support sets are mutually non-overlapping. To construct such codewords in a computationally efficient manner, a successive encoding method is presented. Harnessing the orthogonal property among sub-codewords, a simple yet near-optimal decoding method is proposed, which performs element-wise maximum a posterior decoding with successive support set cancellation. This decoder is super-fast by a linear decoding complexity in block lengths, far less than the commercially used channel decoders for modern channel codes. The upper bounds for the block error rates (BLERs) are analytically derived for few-layered OSS codes as a function of block lengths and code rates. It turns out that a single-layered OSS code achieves the ultimate Shannon limit in the power-limited regime, even with the linear complexity decoder. Via simulations, the proposed OSS codes are shown to perform better than commercially used coded modulation techniques for low-rate and short-latency communication scenarios.

Terahertz Line-Of-Sight MIMO Communication: Theory and Practical Challenges

A relentless trend in wireless communications is the hunger for bandwidth, and fresh bandwidth is only to be found at ever-higher frequencies. While 5G systems are seizing the mmWave band, the attention of researchers is shifting already to the terahertz range. In that distant land of tiny wavelengths, antenna arrays can serve for more than power-enhancing beamforming. Defying lower-frequency wisdom, spatial multiplexing becomes feasible even in line-of-sight conditions. This paper reviews the underpinnings of this phenomenon, and it surveys recent results on the ensuing information-theoretic capacity. Reconfigurable array architectures are put forth that can closely approach such capacity, practical challenges are discussed, and supporting experimental evidence is presented.

Rate Analysis of Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications in Random Wireless Networks

In this letter, we analyze the achievable rate of ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) in a randomly modeled wireless network. We use two mathematical tools to properly characterize the considered system: i) stochastic geometry to model spatial locations of the transmitters in a network, and ii) finite block-length analysis to reflect the features of the short-packets. Exploiting these tools, we derive an integral-form expression of the decoding error probability as a function of the target rate, the path-loss exponent, the communication range, the density, and the channel coding length. We also obtain a tight approximation as a closed-form. The main finding from the analytical results is that, in URLLC, increasing the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) brings significant improvement of the rate performance compared to increasing the channel coding length. Via simulations, we show that fractional frequency reuse improves the area spectral efficiency by reducing the amount of mutual interference.

Feedback Design for Multi-Antenna K-tier Heterogeneous Downlink Cellular Networks

We characterize the ergodic spectral efficiency of a non-cooperative and a cooperative type of K-tier heterogeneous networks with limited feedback. In the non-cooperative case, a multi-antenna base station (BS) serves a single-antenna user using maximum-ratio transmission based on limited feedback. In the cooperative case, a BS coordination set is formed by using dynamic clustering across the tiers, wherein the intra-cluster interference is mitigated by using multi-cell zero-forcing also based on limited feedback. Modeling the network based on stochastic geometry, we derive analytical expressions for the ergodic spectral efficiency as a function of the system parameters. Leveraging the obtained expressions, we formulate feedback partition problems and obtain solutions to improve the ergodic spectral efficiency. Simulations show the spectral efficiency improvement by using the obtained feedback partitions. Our major findings are as follows: 1) In the non-cooperative case, the feedback is only useful in a particular tier if the mean interference is small enough. 2) In the cooperative case, allocating more feedback to stronger intra-cluster BSs is efficient. 3) In both cases, the obtained solutions do not change depending on instantaneous signal-to-interference ratio.

Inter-Operator Base Station Coordination in Spectrum-Shared Millimeter Wave Cellular Networks

We characterize the rate coverage distribution for a spectrum-shared millimeter wave downlink cellular network. Each of multiple cellular operators owns separate mmWave bandwidth, but shares the spectrum amongst each other while using dynamic inter-operator base station (BS) coordination to suppress the resulting cross-operator interference. We model the BS locations of each operator as mutually independent Poisson point processes, and derive the probability density function (PDF) of the K-th strongest link power, incorporating both line-of-sight and non line-of-sight states. Leveraging the obtained PDF, we derive the rate coverage expression as a function of system parameters such as the BS density, transmit power, bandwidth, and coordination set size. We verify the analysis with extensive simulation results. A major finding is that inter-operator BS coordination is useful in spectrum sharing (i) with dense and high power operators and (ii) with fairly wide beams, e.g., 30 or higher.

Spectral Efficiency Bounds for Interference-Limited SVD-MIMO Cellular Communication Systems

The ergodic spectral efficiency (SE) in interference-limited multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink cellular systems is characterized based on stochastic geometry. A single user is served by using singular value decomposition precoding and combining. By approximating the expectations of the channel eigenvalues, we derive upper and lower bounds on the ergodic SE. The obtained upper bound is the best possible system-level performance of any MIMO strategy in non-cooperative cellular networks. We validate our analytical results through simulation. We also conjecture that there exists the optimal number of streams being proportional to the pathloss exponent.
