The topology of Gelfand-Zeitlin fibers

We prove several new results about the topology of fibers of Gelfand--Zeitlin systems on unitary and orthogonal coadjoint orbits, at the same time finding a unifying framework recovering and shedding light on essentially all known results. We find completely explicit descriptions of the diffeomorphism type of the fiber in many instances a direct factor decomposition of the fiber, and a torus factor corresponding to the action given by the Thimm trick. The new description also gives us a weak local normal form for a coadjoint orbit, which we use to define a topological toric degeneration, new in the orthogonal case. We also compute the first three homotopy groups (new in the orthogonal case) and cohomology rings of a fiber (new in both cases). All these descriptions can be read in a straightforward manner from the combinatorics of the associated Gelfand--Zeitlin pattern.

A local normal form for Hamiltonian actions of compact semisimple Poisson-Lie groups

The main contribution of this manuscript is a local normal form for Hamiltonian actions of Poisson-Lie groups $K$ on a symplectic manifold equipped with an $AN$-valued moment map, where $AN$ is the dual Poisson-Lie group of $K$. Our proof uses the delinearization theorem of Alekseev which relates a classical Hamiltonian action of $K$ with $\mathfrak{k}^*$-valued moment map to a Hamiltonian action with an $AN$-valued moment map, via a deformation of symplectic structures. We obtain our main result by proving a ``delinearization commutes with symplectic quotients'' theorem which is also of independent interest, and then putting this together with the local normal form theorem for classical Hamiltonian actions wtih $\mathfrak{k}^*$-valued moment maps. A key ingredient for our main result is the delinearization $\mathcal{D}(\omega_{can})$ of the canonical symplectic structure on $T^*K$, so we additionally take some steps toward explicit computations of $\mathcal{D}(\omega_{can})$. In particular, in the case $K=SU(2)$, we obtain explicit formulas for the matrix coefficients of $\mathcal{D}(\omega_{can})$ with respect to a natural choice of coordinates on $T^*SU(2)$.

Stratified Gradient Hamiltonian Vector Fields and Collective Integrable Systems

We construct completely integrable systems on the dual of the Lie algebra of any compact Lie group $K$ with respect to the standard Lie-Poisson structure. These systems generalize key properties of Gelfand-Zeitlin systems: A) the pullback to any Hamiltonian $K$-manifold defines a Hamiltonian torus action on an open dense subset, B) if the $K$-manifold is multiplicity-free, then the resulting torus action is \textit{completely} integrable, and C) the collective moment map has convexity and fiber connectedness properties. These systems generalize the relationship between Gelfand-Zeitlin systems and Gelfand-Zeitlin canonical bases via geometric quantization by a real polarization. To construct these systems, we generalize Harada and Kaveh's construction of integrable systems by toric degeneration on smooth projective varieties to singular quasi-projective varieties. Under certain conditions, we show that the stratified-gradient Hamiltonian vector field of such a degeneration, which is defined piece-wise, has a flow whose limit exists and defines continuous degeneration map.

Action-angle coordinates on coadjoint orbits and multiplicity free spaces from partial tropicalization

Coadjoint orbits and multiplicity free spaces of compact Lie groups are important examples of symplectic manifolds with Hamiltonian groups actions. Constructing action-angle variables on these spaces is a challenging task. A fundamental result in the field is the Guillemin-Sternberg construction of Gelfand-Zeitlin integrable systems for the groups $K=U(n), SO(n)$. Extending these results to groups of other types is one of the goals of this paper. Partial tropicalizations are Poisson spaces with constant Poisson bracket built using techniques of Poisson-Lie theory and the geometric crystals of Berenstein-Kazhdan. They provide a bridge between dual spaces of Lie algebras ${\rm Lie}(K)^*$ with linear Poisson brackets and polyhedral cones which parametrize the canonical bases of irreducible modules of $G=K^\mathbb{C}$. We generalize the construction of partial tropicalizations to allow for arbitrary cluster charts, and apply it to questions in symplectic geometry. For each regular coadjoint orbit of a compact group $K$, we construct an exhaustion by symplectic embeddings of toric domains. As a by product we arrive at a conjectured formula for Gromov width of regular coadjoint orbits. We prove similar results for multiplicity free $K$-spaces.

Local normal forms for multiplicity free $U(n)$ actions on coadjoint orbits

Actions of $U(n)$ on $U(n+1)$ coadjoint orbits via embeddings of $U(n)$ into $U(n+1)$ are an important family of examples of multiplicity free spaces. They are related to Gelfand-Zeitlin completely integrable systems and multiplicity free branching rules in representation theory. This paper computes the Hamiltonian local normal forms of all such actions, at arbitrary points, in arbitrary $U(n+1)$ coadjoint orbits. The results are described using combinatorics of interlacing patterns; gadgets that describe the associated Kirwan polytopes.

Concentration of symplectic volumes on Poisson homogeneous spaces

For a compact Poisson-Lie group $K$, the homogeneous space $K/T$ carries a family of symplectic forms $\omega_\xi^s$, where $\xi \in \mathfrak{t}^*_+$ is in the positive Weyl chamber and $s \in \mathbb{R}$. The symplectic form $\omega_\xi^0$ is identified with the natural $K$-invariant symplectic form on the $K$ coadjoint orbit corresponding to $\xi$. The cohomology class of $\omega_\xi^s$ is independent of $s$ for a fixed value of $\xi$. In this paper, we show that as $s\to -\infty$, the symplectic volume of $\omega_\xi^s$ concentrates in arbitrarily small neighbourhoods of the smallest Schubert cell in $K/T \cong G/B$. This strengthens earlier results [9,10] and is a step towards a conjectured construction of global action-angle coordinates on $Lie(K)^*$ [4, Conjecture 1.1].

The $U(n)$ Gelfand-Zeitlin system as a tropical limit of Ginzburg-Weinstein diffeomorphisms

We show that the Ginzburg-Weinstein diffeomorphism $\mathfrak{u}(n)^* \to U(n)^*$ of Alekseev-Meinrenken admits a scaling tropical limit on an open dense subset of $\mathfrak{u}(n)^*$. The target of the limit map is a product $\mathcal{C} \times T$, where $\mathcal{C}$ is the interior of a cone, $T$ is a torus, and $\mathcal{C} \times T$ carries an integrable system with natural action-angle coordinates. The pull-back of these coordinates to $\mathfrak{u}(n)^*$ recovers the Gelfand-Zeitlin integrable system of Guillemin-Sternberg. As a by-product of our proof, we show that the Lagrangian tori of the Flaschka-Ratiu integrable system on the set of upper triangular matrices meet the set of totally positive matrices for sufficiently large action coordinates.

The geometric structure of symplectic contraction

We show that the symplectic contraction map of Hilgert-Manon-Martens -- a symplectic version of Popov's horospherical contraction -- is simply the quotient of a Hamiltonian manifold $M$ by a "stratified null foliation" that is determined by the group action and moment map. We also show that the quotient differential structure on the symplectic contraction of $M$ supports a Poisson bracket. We end by proving a very general description of the topology of fibers of Gelfand-Zeitlin systems on multiplicity free Hamiltonian $U(n)$ and $SO(n)$ manifolds.

A completely integrable system on $G_2$ coadjoint orbits

We construct a Gelfand-Zeitlin system on a one-parameter family of $G_2$ coadjoint orbits that are multiplicity-free Hamiltonian $SU(3)$-spaces. Using this system we prove a lower bound for the Gromov width of these orbits. This lower bound agrees with the known upper bound.

Convexity and Thimm's Trick

In this paper we prove a convexity and fibre-connectedness theorem for proper maps constructed by Thimm's trick on a connected Hamiltonian $G$-space $M$ that generate a Hamiltonian torus action on an open dense submanifold. Since these maps only generate a Hamiltonian torus action on an open dense submanifold of $M$, convexity and fibre-connectedness do not follow immediately from Atiyah-Guillemin-Sternberg's convexity theorem, even if $M$ is compact. The core contribution of this paper is to provide a simple argument circumventing this difficulty. In the case where the map is constructed from a chain of subalgebras we prove that the image is given by a list of inequalities that can be computed explicitly. This generalizes the famous example of Gelfand-Zeitlin systems on coadjoint orbits introduced by Guillemin and Sternberg. Moreover, we prove that if such a map generates a completely integrable torus action on an open dense submanifold of $M$, then all its fibres are smooth embedded submanifolds.

Topological Monodromy of an Integrable Heisenberg Spin Chain

We investigate topological properties of a completely integrable system on $S^2\times S^2 \times S^2$ which was recently shown to have a Lagrangian fiber diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R} P^3$ not displaceable by a Hamiltonian isotopy [Oakley J., Ph.D. Thesis, University of Georgia, 2014]. This system can be viewed as integrating the determinant, or alternatively, as integrating a classical Heisenberg spin chain. We show that the system has non-trivial topological monodromy and relate this to the geometric interpretation of its integrals.
