Bailey pairs, Eichler integrals and unified Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants

In 1999, Lawrence and Zagier expressed the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev (WRT) invariant of the Poincar\'e homology sphere as the limiting value of the Eichler integral of a weight 3/2 modular form. Habiro's construction of the unified WRT invariant subsequently recast this result as an identity for a $q$-hypergeometric series at roots of unity. This motivated Hikami to prove analogous $q$-series identities involving the unified WRT invariants of certain Brieskorn homology spheres. Hikami also made several conjectures of a similar type for $q$-series with no apparent connection to quantum invariants. In this paper we use the Bailey pair machinery and a novel relation between incomplete quadratic Gauss sums with periodic coefficients to construct infinite families of identities between $q$-multisums at roots of unity and limiting values of Eichler integrals of weight 3/2 modular forms. These identities include all of Hikami's results and conjectures as well as a generalization of the result of Lawrence and Zagier.

Bailey pairs and quantum $q$-series identites. I. The classical identities

We use Bailey pairs to prove $q$-series identities at roots of unity due to Cohen and Bryson-Ono-Pitman-Rhoades. The proofs use Bailey pairs with quadratic forms developed in the study of mock theta functions. In addition to the standard Bailey lemma, we require some changes-of-base established by Bressoud-Ismail-Stanton. We then embed the identities in infinite families using the Bailey chain.

Bailey pairs, radial limits of $q$-hypergeometric false theta functions, and a conjecture of Hikami

In the first part of this paper we prove a conjecture of Hikami on the values of the radial limits of a family of $q$-hypergeometric false theta functions. Hikami conjectured that the radial limits are obtained by evaluating a truncated version of the series. He proved a special case of his conjecture by computing the Kashaev invariant of certain torus links in two different ways. We prove the full conjecture using Bailey pairs. In the second part of the paper we show how the framework of Bailey pairs leads to further results of this type.

Odd unimodal sequeneces

In this paper we study odd unimodal and odd strongly unimodal sequences. We use $q$-series methods to find several fundamental generating functions. Employing the Euler--Maclaurin summation formula we obtain the asymptotic main term for both types of sequences. We also find families of congruences modulo $4$ for the number of odd strongly unimodal sequences.

Rank deviations for overpartitions

We prove general fomulas for the deviations of two overpartition ranks from the average. These formulas are in terms of Appell--Lerch series and sums of quotients of theta functions and can be used, among other things, to recover any of the numerous overpartition rank difference identities in the literature. We give two illustrations.

Bailey pairs and strange identities

Zagier introduced the term "strange identity" to describe an asymptotic relation between a certain $q$-hypergeometric series and a partial theta function at roots of unity. We show that behind Zagier's strange identity lies a statement about Bailey pairs. Using the iterative machinery of Bailey pairs then leads to many families of multisum strange identities, including Hikami's generalization of Zagier's identity.

The colored Jones polynomial and Kontsevich-Zagier series for double twist knots, II

Let $K_{(m,p)}$ denote the family of double twist knots where $2m-1$ and $2p$ are non-zero integers denoting the number of half-twists in each region. Using a result of Takata, we prove a formula for the colored Jones polynomial of $K_{(-m,-p)}$ and $K_{(-m,p)}$. The latter case leads to new families of $q$-hypergeometric series generalizing the Kontsevich-Zagier series. We also use Bailey pairs and formulas of Walsh to find cyclotomic-like expansions for the colored Jones polynomials of $K_{(m,p)}$ and $K_{(m,-p)}$.

Dissections of strange $q$-series

In a study of congruences for the Fishburn numbers, Andrews and Sellers observed empirically that certain polynomials appearing in the dissections of the partial sums of the Kontsevich-Zagier series are divisible by a certain $q$-factorial. This was proved by the first two authors. In this paper we extend this strong divisibility property to two generic families of $q$-hypergeometric series which, like the Kontsevich-Zagier series, agree asymptotically with partial theta functions.

The colored Jones polynomial and Kontsevich-Zagier series for double twist knots

Using a result of Takata, we prove a formula for the colored Jones polynomial of the double twist knots $K_{(-m,-p)}$ and $K_{(-m,p)}$ where $m$ and $p$ are positive integers. In the $(-m,-p)$ case, this leads to new families of $q$-hypergeometric series generalizing the Kontsevich-Zagier series. Comparing with the cyclotomic expansion of the colored Jones polynomials of $K_{(m,p)}$ gives a generalization of a duality at roots of unity between the Kontsevich-Zagier function and the generating function for strongly unimodal sequences.

Generalizations of Capparelli's identity

Using jagged overpartitions, we give three generalizations of a weighted word version of Capparelli's identity due to Andrews, Alladi, and Gordon and present several corollaries.

On some special families of $q$-hypergeometric Maass forms

Using special polynomials introduced by Hikami and the second author in their study of torus knots, we construct classes of $q$-hypergeometric series lying in the Habiro ring. These give rise to new families of quantum modular forms, and their Fourier coefficients encode distinguished Maass cusp forms. The cuspidality of these Maass waveforms is proven by making use of the Habiro ring representations of the associated quantum modular forms. Thus, we provide an example of using the $q$-hypergeometric structure of associated series to establish modularity properties which are otherwise non-obvious. We conclude the paper with a number of motivating questions and possible connections with Hecke characters, combinatorics, and still mysterious relations between $q$-hypergeometric series and {the passage} from positive to negative coefficients of Maass waveforms.

Mock theta double sums

We prove a general result on Bailey pairs and show that two Bailey pairs of Bringmann and Kane are special cases. We also show how to use a change of base formula to pass from the pairs of Bringmann and Kane to pairs used by Andrews in his study of Ramanujan's seventh order mock theta functions. We derive several more Bailey pairs of a similar type and use these to construct a number of new q-hypergeometric double sums which are mock theta functions. Finally, we prove identities between some of these mock theta double sums and classical mock theta functions.

Real quadratic double sums

In 1988, Andrews, Dyson and Hickerson initiated the study of q-hypergeometric series whose coefficients are dictated by the arithmetic in real quadratic fields. In this paper, we provide a dozen q-hypergeometric double sums which are generating functions for the number of ideals of a given norm in rings of integers of real quadratic fields and prove some related identities.

Torus knots and quantum modular forms

In this paper we compute a $q$-hypergeometric expression for the cyclotomic expansion of the colored Jones polynomial for the left-handed torus knot $(2,2t+1)$ and use this to define a family of quantum modular forms which are dual to the generalized Kontsevich-Zagier series.

A partition identity and the universal mock theta function $g_2$

We prove analytic and combinatorial identities reminiscent of Schur's classical partition theorem. Specifically, we show that certain families of overpartitions whose parts satisfy gap conditions are equinumerous with partitions whose parts satisfy congruence conditions. Furthermore, if small parts are excluded, the resulting overpartitions are generated by the product of a modular form and Gordon and McIntosh's universal mock theta function. Finally, we give an interpretation for the universal mock theta function at real arguments in terms of certain conditional probabilities.

Mixed mock modular q-series

Mixed mock modular forms are functions which lie in the tensor space of mock modular forms and modular forms. As q-hypergeometric series, mixed mock modular forms appear to be much more common than mock theta functions. In this survey, we discuss some of the ways such series arise.
