Gaussian Quadrature without Orthogonal Polynomials

A novel development is given of the theory of Gaussian quadrature, not relying on the theory of orthogonal polynomials. A method is given for computing the nodes and weights that is manifestly independent of choice of basis in the space of polynomials. This method can be extended to compute nodes and weights for Gaussian quadrature on the unit circle and Gauss type quadrature rules with some fixed nodes.

Commuting Extensions and Cubature Formulae

Based on a novel point of view on 1-dimensional Gaussian quadrature, we present a new approach to the computation of d-dimensional cubature formulae. It is well known that the nodes of 1-dimensional Gaussian quadrature can be computed as eigenvalues of the so-called Jacobi matrix. The d-dimensional analog is that cubature nodes can be obtained from the eigenvalues of certain mutually commuting matrices. These are obtained by extending (adding rows and columns to) certain noncommuting matrices A_1,...,A_d, related to the coordinate operators x_1,...,x_d, in R^d. We prove a correspondence between cubature formulae and "commuting extensions" of A_1,...,A_d, satisfying a compatibility condition which, in appropriate coordinates, constrains certain blocks in the extended matrices to be zero. Thus the problem of finding cubature formulae can be transformed to the problem of computing (and then simultaneously diagonalizing) commuting extensions. We give a general discussion of existence and of the expected size of commuting extensions and describe our attempts at computing them, as well as examples of cubature formulae obtained using the new approach.

HexaKdV

An analog of the lattice KdV equation of Nijhoff et al. is constructed on a hexagonal lattice. The resulting system of difference equations exhibits soliton solutions with interesting local structure: there is a nontrivial phase shift on moving between adjacent lattice sites, with the magnitude of the shift tending to zero in the continuum limit.

Loop Groups and Discrete KdV Equations

A study is presented of fully discretized lattice equations associated with the KdV hierarchy. Loop group methods give a systematic way of constructing discretizations of the equations in the hierarchy. The lattice KdV system of Nijhoff et al. arises from the lowest order discretization of the trivial, lowest order equation in the hierarchy, b_t=b_x. Two new discretizations are also given, the lowest order discretization of the first nontrivial equation in the hierarchy, and a "second order" discretization of b_t=b_x. The former, which is given the name "full lattice KdV" has the (potential) KdV equation as a standard continuum limit. For each discretization a Backlund transformation is given and soliton content analyzed. The full lattice KdV system has, like KdV itself, solitons of all speeds, whereas both other discretizations studied have a limited range of speeds, being discretizations of an equation with solutions only of a fixed speed.

The supersymmetric Camassa-Holm equation and geodesic flow on the superconformal group

We study a family of fermionic extensions of the Camassa-Holm equation. Within this family we identify three interesting classes: (a) equations, which are inherently hamiltonian, describing geodesic flow with respect to an H^1 metric on the group of superconformal transformations in two dimensions, (b) equations which are hamiltonian with respect to a different hamiltonian structure and (c) supersymmetric flow equations. Classes (a) and (b) have no intersection, but the intersection of classes (a) and (c) gives a candidate for a new supersymmetric integrable system. We demonstrate the Painlevé property for some simple but nontrivial reductions of this system.

The Universal Gaussian in Soliton Tails

We show that in a large class of equations, solitons formed from generic initial conditions do not have infinitely long exponential tails, but are truncated by a region of Gaussian decay. This phenomenon makes it possible to treat solitons as localized, individual objects. For the case of the KdV equation, we show how the Gaussian decay emerges in the inverse scattering formalism.

The Camassa-Holm Equation: A Loop Group Approach

A map is presented that associates with each element of a loop group a solution of an equation related by a simple change of coordinates to the Camassa-Holm (CH) Equation. Certain simple automorphisms of the loop group give rise to Backlund transformations of the equation. These are used to find 2-soliton solutions of the CH equation, as well as some novel singular solutions.

Hidden Symmetries of the Principal Chiral Model Unveiled

By relating the two-dimensional U(N) Principal Chiral Model to a simple linear system we obtain a free-field parametrisation of solutions. Obvious symmetry transformations on the free-field data give symmetries of the model. In this way all known `hidden symmetries' and Bäcklund transformations, as well as a host of new symmetries, arise.

Symmetries of KdV and Loop Groups

A simple version of the Segal-Wilson map from the SL(2,C) loop group to a class of solutions of the KdV hierarchy is given, clarifying certain aspects of this map. It is explained how the known symmetries, including Backlund transformations, of KdV arise from simple, field independent, actions on the loop group. A variety of issues in understanding the algebraic structure of Backlund transformations are thus resolved.

On UrKdV and UrKP

We present two extensions of Wilson's explanation of the Miura map from MKdV to KdV. In the first we explain the map of Svinolupov et al from a certain UrKdV-like equation to KdV, and in the second we explain Konopelchenko's map from the modified KP equation to KP. In the course of the latter we introduce an ``UrKP'' system, with an infinite dimensional symmetry, providing us with a systematic method to construct Backlund transformations for the modified KP and KP equations.

Bäcklund Transformations of MKdV and Painlevé Equations

For $N\ge 3$ there are $S_N$ and $D_N$ actions on the space of solutions of the first nontrivial equation in the $SL(N) MKdV hierarchy, generalizing the two $Z_2$ actions on the space of solutions of the standard MKdV equation. These actions survive scaling reduction, and give rise to transformation groups for certain (systems of) ODEs, including the second, fourth and fifth Painlevé equations.

Self-Dual Yang-Mills and the Hamiltonian Structures of Integrable Systems

In recent years it has been shown that many, and possibly all, integrable systems can be obtained by dimensional reduction of self-dual Yang-Mills. I show how the integrable systems obtained this way naturally inherit bihamiltonian structure. I also present a simple, gauge-invariant formulation of the self-dual Yang-Mills hierarchy proposed by several authors, and I discuss the notion of gauge equivalence of integrable systems that arises from the gauge invariance of the self-duality equations (and their hierarchy); this notion of gauge equivalence may well be large enough to unify the many diverse existing notions.

On The Hamiltonian Structures and The Reductions of The KP Hierarchy

Recent work on a free field realization of the Hamiltonian structures of the classical KP hierarchy and of its flows is reviewed. It is shown that it corresponds to a reduction of KP to the NLS system. The KdV Action and Deformed Minimal Models

An action is constructed that gives an arbitrary equation in the KdV or MKdV hierarchies as equation of motion; the second Hamiltonian structure of the KdV equation and the Hamiltonian structure of the MKdV equation appear as Poisson bracket structures derived from this action. Quantization of this theory can be carried out in two different schemes, to obtain either the quantum KdV theory of Kupershmidt and Mathieu or the quantum MKdV theory of Sasaki and Yamanaka. The latter is, for specific values of the coupling constant, related to a generalized deformation of the minimal models, and clarifies the relationship of integrable systems of KdV type and conformal field theories. As a generalization it is shown how to construct an action for the $SL(3)$-KdV (Boussinesq) hierarchy.
