Recurrence, symbolic dynamics, and wild attractors for unimodal maps

In this paper, we construct families of unimodal maps with wild Cantor attractors and study, via symbolic dynamics, the interplay between recurrence properties of the critical orbit. Using kneading and co-kneading techniques, we provide a symbolic characterization of persistent recurrence in terms of cutting and co-cutting times, and relate it to other recurrence conditions, including the Collet--Eckmann condition. As an application, we obtain uncountable families of non-renormalizable unimodal maps of sufficiently high critical order admitting wild attractors. We also analyze the structure of postcritical dynamics in recurrent regimes, constructing examples with embedded odometers and with minimal homeomorphic dynamics on the critical $ω$-limit set, and showing that a minimal homeomorphism together with regular recurrence does not imply conjugacy to an adding machine. Finally, we prove that longbranched combinatorics is incompatible with persistent recurrence, thereby clarifying the boundary between different recurrence regimes.

Dynamics on fences

Homeomorphisms of the Cantor set play a central role in topology, dynamical systems and descriptive set theory. In parallel, several classes of fence-like spaces - such as the hairy Cantor set, hairy arcs, Cantor bouquets in complex dynamics, the Lelek fan in topology and Fraïssé fence in descriptive set theory - have recently been studied for their rich structural and dynamical properties. In this paper, we introduce a general construction that associates to each homeomorphism of the Cantor set a canonically defined homeomorphism of a corresponding fence space. This construction lifts dynamical properties from the Cantor set to these fence-like spaces, allowing one to systematically transfer features such as minimality, recurrence, and orbit structure. As a consequence, we obtain a unified framework for studying dynamics on a broad class of fence-like spaces and establish new connections between their topological structure and induced dynamical behavior.

On Lebesgue measure preserving Besicovitch functions

We consider the space $C_λ$ of all continuous interval maps preserving the Lebesgue measure $λ$. A continuous function $f\colon~[0,1]\to \mathbb R$ is called Besicovitch if it does not have any finite or infinite unilateral derivative. It is known that the set of Besicovitch functions in $C_λ$ is nonempty and meager. We prove that no Besicovitch function is invertible $λ$-almost everywhere. As a consequence, every Besicovitch function in $C_λ$ has positive measure-theoretic entropy with respect to $λ$. Furthermore, we show that Besicovitch functions are dense in $C_λ$ and, consequently, also dense in the class of interval maps with a dense set of periodic points.

Generic continuous Lebesgue measure-preserving interval maps are nowhere monotone but invertible a.e

We consider continuous maps of the interval which preserve the Lebesgue measure. Except for the identity map or $1 - \id$ all such maps have topological entropy at least $\log2/2$ and generically they have infinite topological entropy. In this article we show that the generic map has zero measure-theoretic entropy. This implies that there are dramatic differences in the topological versus measure-theoretic behavior both for injectivity as well as for the structure of the level sets of generic maps. As a consequence we get a surprising corollary for a family of planar attractors homeomorphic to the pseudo-arcs.

On zero entropy homeomorphisms of the pseudo-arc

In this paper we study interval maps $f$ with zero topological entropy that are crooked; i.e. whose inverse limit with $f$ as the single bonding map is the pseudo-arc. We show that there are uncountably many pairwise non-conjugate zero entropy crooked interval maps with different sets of fixed points. We also show that there are uncountably many zero entropy crooked maps that are pairwise non-conjugate and have exactly two fixed points. Furthermore, we provide a characterization of crooked interval maps that are under or above the identity diagonal.

Interval maps with dense periodicity

We consider the class of interval maps with dense set of periodic points CP and its closure Cl(CP) equipped with the metric of uniform convergence. Besides studying basic topological properties and density results in the spaces CP and Cl(CP) we prove that Cl(CP) is dynamically characterized as the set of interval maps for which every point is chain-recurrent. Furthermore, we prove that a strong topological expansion property called topological exactness (or leo property) is attained on the open dense set of maps in CP and on a residual set in Cl(CP). Moreover, we show that every second category set in CP and Cl(CP) is rich in a sense that it contains uncountably many conjugacy classes. An analogous conclusion also holds in the setting of interval maps preserving any fixed non-atomic probability measure with full support. Finally, we give a detailed description of the structure of periodic points of generic maps in CP and Cl(CP) and show that generic maps in CP and Cl(CP) satisfy the shadowing property.

Parameterized family of annular homeomorphisms with pseudo-circle attractors

In this paper we construct a paramaterized family of annular homeomorphisms with Birkhoff-like rotational attractors that vary continuously with the parameter, are all homeomorphic to the pseudo-circle, display interesting boundary dynamics and furthermore preserve the induced Lebesgue measure from the circle. Namely, in the constructed family of attractors the outer prime ends rotation number vary continuously with the parameter through the interval $[0,1/2]$. This, in particular, answers a question from [J. London Math. Soc. (2) {\bf 102} (2020), 557--579]. To show main results of the paper we first prove a result of an independent interest, that Lebesgue-measure preserving circle maps generically satisfy the crookedness condition which implies that generically the inverse limits of Lebesgue measure-preserving circle maps are hereditarily indecomposable. For degree one circle maps, this implies that the generic inverse limit in this context is the R.H. Bing's pseudo-circle.

Are generic dynamical properties stable under composition with rotations?

In this paper we provide a detailed topological and measure-theoretic study of Lebesgue measure-preserving circle maps that are rotated with inner and outer rotations which are independent of each other. In particular, we analyze the stability of the locally eventually onto and measure-theoretic mixing properties.

Parametrized family of pseudo-arc attractors: physical measures and prime end rotations

The main goal of this paper is to study topological and measure-theoretic properties of an intriguing family of strange planar attractors. Building towards these results, we first show that any generic Lebesgue measure preserving map $f$ generates the pseudo-arc as inverse limit with $f$ as a single bonding map. These maps can be realized as attractors of disc homeomorphisms in such a way that the attractors vary continuously (in Hausdorff distance on the disc) with the change of bonding map as a parameter. Furthermore, for generic Lebesgue measure preserving maps $f$ the background Oxtoby-Ulam measures induced by Lebesgue measure for $f$ on the interval are physical on the disc and in addition there is a dense set of maps $f$ defining a unique physical measure. Moreover, the family of physical measures on the attractors varies continuously in the weak* topology; i.e. the parametrized family is statistically stable. We also find an arc in the generic Lebesgue measure preserving set of maps and construct a family of disk homeomorphisms parametrized by this arc which induces a continuously varying family of pseudo-arc attractors with prime ends rotation numbers varying continuously in $[0,1/2]$. It follows that there are uncountably many dynamically non-equivalent embeddings of the pseudo-arc in this family of attractors.

Periodic points and shadowing property for generic Lebesgue measure preserving interval maps

We show that for the generic continuous maps of the interval and circle which preserve the Lebesgue measure it holds for each k $\ge$ 1 that the set of periodic points of period k is a Cantor set of Hausdorff dimension zero and of upper box dimension one. Furthermore, building on this result, we show that there is a dense collection of transitive Lebesgue measure preserving interval map whose periodic points have full Lebesgue measure and whose periodic points of period k have positive measure for each k $\ge$ 1. Finally, we show that the generic continuous maps of the interval which preserve the Lebesgue measure satisfy the shadowing and periodic shadowing property.

S-limit shadowing is generic for continuous Lebesgue measure preserving circle maps

In this paper we show that generic continuous Lebesgue measure preserving circle maps have the s-limit shadowing property. In addition we obtain that s-limit shadowing is a generic property also for continuous circle maps. In particular, this implies that classical shadowing, periodic shadowing and limit shadowing are generic in these two settings as well.

Inhomogeneities in chainable continua

We study a class of chainable continua which contains, among others, all inverse limit spaces generated by a single interval bonding map which is piecewise monotone and locally eventually onto. Such spaces are realized as attractors of non-hyperbolic surface homeomorphisms. Using dynamical properties of the bonding map, we give conditions for existence of endpoints, characterize the set of local inhomogeneities, and determine when it consists only of endpoints. As a side product we also obtain a characterization of arcs as inverse limits for piecewise monotone bonding maps, which is interesting in its own right.

On Rigid Minimal Spaces

A compact space $X$ is said to be minimal if there exists a map $f:X\to X$ such that the forward orbit of any point is dense in $X$. We consider rigid minimal spaces, motivated by recent results of Downarowicz, Snoha, and Tywoniuk [J. Dyn. Diff. Eq., 2016] on spaces with cyclic group of homeomorphisms generated by a minimal homeomorphism, and results of the first author, Clark and Oprocha [ Adv. Math., 2018] on spaces in which the square of every homeomorphism is a power of the same minimal homeomorphism. We show that the two classes do not coincide, which gives rise to a new class of spaces that admit minimal homeomorphisms, but no minimal maps. We modify the latter class of examples to show for the first time the existence of minimal spaces with degenerate homeomorphism groups. Finally, we give a method of constructing decomposable compact and connected spaces with cyclic group of homeomorphisms, generated by a minimal homeomorphism, answering a question in Downarowicz et al.

Prime Ends Dynamics in Parametrised Families of Rotational Attractors

We provide several new examples in dynamics on the $2$-sphere, with the emphasis on better understanding the induced boundary dynamics of invariant domains in parametrized families. First, motivated by a topological version of the Poincaré-Bendixson Theorem obtained recently by Koropecki and Passeggi, we show the existence of homeomorphisms of $\mathbb{S}^2$ with Lakes of Wada rotational attractors, with an arbitrarily large number of complementary domains, and with or without fixed points, that are arbitrarily close to the identity. This answers a question of Le Roux. Second, from reduced Arnold's family we construct a parametrised family of Birkhoff-like cofrontier attractors, where at least for uncountably many choices of the parameters, two distinct irrational prime ends rotation numbers are induced from the two complementary domains. This example complements the resolution of Walker's Conjecture by Koropecki, Le Calvez and Nassiri from 2015. Third, answering a question of Boyland, we show that there exists a non-transitive Birkhoff-like attracting cofrontier which is obtained from a BBM embedding of inverse limit of circles, such that the interior prime ends rotation number belongs to the interior of the rotation interval of the cofrontier dynamics. There exists another BBM embedding of the same attractor so that the two induced prime ends rotation numbers are exactly the two endpoints of the rotation interval.

Planar embeddings of chainable continua

We prove that for a chainable continuum $X$ and every non-zigzag $x\in X$ there exists a planar embedding $ϕ:X\to ϕ(X)\subset\mathbb R^2$ such that $ϕ(x)$ is accessible, partially answering the question of Nadler and Quinn from 1972. Two embeddings $ϕ,ψ:X \to \mathbb R^2$ are called strongly equivalent if $ϕ\circ ψ^{-1}: ψ(X) \to ϕ(X)$ can be extended to a homeomorphism of $\mathbb R^2$. We also prove that every indecomposable chainable continuum can be embedded in the plane in uncountably many strongly non-equivalent ways.
