Determining the Short-Range Spin Correlations in Cuprate Chain Materials with Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

We report a high-resolution resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering study of the quantum magnetic spin-chain materials Li2CuO2 and CuGeO3. By tuning the incoming photon energy to the oxygen K-edge, a strong excitation around 3.5 eV energy loss is clearly resolved for both materials. Comparing the experimental data to many-body calculations, we identify this excitation as a Zhang-Rice singlet exciton on neighboring CuO4-plaquettes. We demonstrate that the strong temperature dependence of the inelastic scattering related to this high-energy exciton enables to probe short-range spin correlations on the 1 meV scale with outstanding sensitivity.

The dual nature of As-vacancies in LaFeAsO-derived superconductors: magnetic moment formation while preserving superconductivity

As-vacancies (V_As) in La-1111-systems, which are nominally non-magnetic defects, are shown to create in their vicinity by symmetry ferromagnetically oriented local magnetic moments due to the strong, covalent bonds with neighboring Fe atoms that they break. From microscopic theory in terms of an appropriately modified Anderson-Wolff model, we find that the moment formation results in a substantially enhanced paramagnetic susceptibility in both the normal and superconducting (SC) state. Despite the V_As act as magnetic scatterers, they do not deteriorate SC properties which can even be improved by V_As by suppressing a competing or coexisting commensurate spin density wave or its remnant fluctuations. Due to the induced local magnetic moments an s_++-scenario in related systems is unlikely.

Disordered magnetism in superconducting KFe2As2 single crystals

High-quality KFe2As2 (K122) single crystals synthesized by different techniques have been studied by magnetization and specific heat (SH) measurements. There are 2 types of samples both affected by disordered magnetic phases: (i) cluster-glass (CG) like or (ii) Griffiths phase (G) like. For (i) at low applied magnetic fields the T-dependence of the zero field cooled (ZFC) linear susceptibility (chi_l) exhibits an anomaly with an irreversible behavior in ZFC and field cooled (FC) data. This anomaly is related to the freezing temperature T_f. The extrapolated T_f to B=0 varies between 50 K and 90 K. Below T_f we observed a magnetic hysteresis in the field dependence of the isothermal magnetization (M(B)). The frequency shift of the freezing temperature delta T_f=Delta T_f/[T_fΔ(\ln ν)]\sim 0.05$ has an intermediate value, which provides evidence for the formation of a CG-like state in the K122 samples of type (i). The frequency dependence of their T_f follows a conventional power-law divergence of critical slowing down: tau=tau_0 [T_f(nu)/T_f(0)-1]^{-zν^{'}} with the critical exponent zν^{'}=10(2) and a relatively long characteristic time constant tau_0 =6.9 x10^{-11}$s also supporting a CG behavior. The large value of the Sommerfeld coefficient was related to magnetic contribution from a CG. Samples from (ii) did not show a hysteresis behavior for chi_l(T) and M(B). Below a crossover temperature T^* sim 40 K a power-law dependence in the chi_l propto T^[lambda_G-1}], with a non-universal lambda_G was observed, suggesting a quantum G-like behavior. In this case chi_l and M(B) can be scaled using the scaling function M_s(T,B)= B^{1-λ_{\tiny G}}Y(mu B/k_BT) with the scaling moment mu of the order of 3.5mu_b. The same non-universal exponent was found also in SH measurements, where the magnetic contribution C/T propto T^(lambda_G-1).

Quantum collapses and revivals of a matter wave in the dynamics of symmetry breaking

Using the remarkable mathematical construct of Eugene Wigner to visualize quantum trajectories in phase space, quantum processes can be described in terms of a quasi-probability distribution analogous to the phase space probability distribution of the classical realm. In contrast to the incomplete glimpse of the wave function that is achievable in a single shot experiment, the Wigner distribution, accessible by quantum state tomography, reflects the full quantum state. We show that during the fundamental symmetry-breaking process of a generic quantum system - with a symmetry breaking field driving the quantum system far from equilibrium - the Wigner distribution evolves continuously with the system undergoing a sequence of revivals into the symmetry unbroken state, followed by collapses onto a quasi-classical state akin the one realised in infinite size systems. We show that generically this state is completely delocalised both in momentum and in real space.

Testing the validity of the strong spin-orbit-coupling limit for octahedrally coordinated iridates in a model system Sr$_3$CuIrO$_6$

The electronic structure of Sr$_3$CuIrO$_6$, a model system for the 5d Ir ion in an octahedral environment, is studied through a combination of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and theoretical calculations. RIXS spectra at the Ir L$_3$-edge reveal an Ir $t_{2g}$ manifold that is split into three levels, in contrast to the expectations of the strong spin-orbit-coupling limit. Effective Hamiltonian and $ab inito$ quantum chemistry calculations find a strikingly large non-cubic crystal field splitting comparable to the spin-orbit coupling, which results in a strong mixing of the $j_{\mathsf{eff}}=1/2$ and $j_{\mathsf{eff}}=3/2$ states and modifies the isotropic wavefunctions on which many theoretical models are based.

Crystal field splitting and correlation effect on the electronic structure of A2IrO3

The electronic structure of the honeycomb lattice iridates Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3 has been investigated using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Crystal-field split d-d excitations are resolved in the high-resolution RIXS spectra. In particular, the splitting due to non-cubic crystal fields, derived from the splitting of j_eff=3/2 states, is much smaller than the typical spin-orbit energy scale in iridates, validating the applicability of j_eff physics in A2IrO3. We also find excitonic enhancement of the particle-hole excitation gap around 0.4 eV, indicating that the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction could be large. These findings suggest that both Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3 can be described as spin-orbit Mott insulators, similar to the square lattice iridate Sr2IrO4.

Unraveling Orbital Correlations via Magnetic Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

Although orbital degrees of freedom are a factor of fundamental importance in strongly correlated transition metal compounds, orbital correlations and dynamics remain very difficult to access, in particular by neutron scattering. Via a direct calculation of scattering amplitudes we show that instead magnetic resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) does reveal orbital correlations. In contrast to neutron scattering, the intensity of the magnetic excitations in RIXS depends very sensitively on both the symmetry of the orbitals that spins occupy, and on photon polarizations. We show in detail how this effect allows magnetic RIXS to distinguish between alternating orbital ordered and ferro-orbital (or orbital liquid) states.

Surface adatom conductance filtering in scanning tunneling spectroscopy of Co-doped BaFe2As2 iron pnictide superconductors

We establish in a combination of ab initio theory and experiments that the tunneling process in scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy on the A-122 iron pnictide superconductors - in this case BaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ - involve a strong adatom filtering of the differential conductance from the near-EF Fe3d states, which in turn originates from the top-most sub-surface Fe layer of the crystal. The calculations show that the dominance of surface Ba-related tunneling pathways leaves fingerprints found in the experimental differential conductance data, including large particle-hole asymmetry and an energy-dependent contrast inversion.

CaIrO3 post-perovskite, a j = 1/2 quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet

The 5d5 iridate CaIrO3 is isostructural with the post-perovskite phase of MgSiO3, recently shown to occur under extreme pressure in the lower Earth's mantle. It therefore serves as an analogue of post-perovskite MgSiO3 for a wide variety of measurements at ambient conditions or achievable with conventional multianvile pressure modules. By multireference configuration-interaction calculations we here provide essential information on the chemical bonding and magnetic interactions in CaIrO3. We predict a large antiferromagnetic superexchange of 120 meV along the c axis, the same size with the interactions in the cuprate superconductors, and ferromagnetic couplings smaller by an order of magnitude along a. CaIrO3 can thus be regarded as a j = 1/2 quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet. While this qualitatively agrees with the stripy magnetic structure proposed by resonant x-ray diffraction, the detailed microscopic picture emerging from our study, in particular, the highly uneven admixture of t2g components, provides a clear prediction for resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments.

75As NMR-NQR study in superconducting LiFeAs

We report results of 75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) experiments as well as 7Li NMR on different samples of self flux grown LiFeAs and 5 % Co doped LiFeAs single crystals, and a polycrystalline LiFeAs sample. We were able to distinguish the samples by their slightly different quadrupole frequencies, $ν_Q$, which is a direct measure of the electric field gradient (EFG) at the As site. Interestingly, samples with a large quadrupole frequency appear to show a different Knight shift and spin lattice relaxation in the superconducting state from those with a lower $ν_Q$, yet all the samples are clearly superconducting. For sample S1 which has the largest $ν_Q$, we find constant Knight shift K across Tc for a certain direction of the magnetic field and a peculiar upturn of the NQR spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 below Tc. In contrast, samples with a lower $ν_Q$ exhibit the expected behavior for a singlet superconductor: a drop of K and 1/T1 for both NMR and NQR below Tc. Our results show that already tiny changes in stoichiometry uncovered by slightly different NQR frequencies lead to very different behavior of the NMR parameters in the superconducting state of LiFeAs. Different possibilities will be discussed which may explain the contrasting behavior.

Exact diagonalization results for resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra of one-dimensional Mott insulators

We examine the momentum-dependent excitation spectra of indirect as well as direct resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) processes in half-filled (extended) Hubbard rings. We determine the fundamental features of the groundstate RIXS response and discuss the experimental conditions that can allow for the low-energy part of these features to be distinguished in one-dimensional copper-oxide materials, focusing particularly on the different magnetic excitations occurring in indirect and direct RIXS processes. We study the dependence of spin and charge excitations on the choice of and detuning from resonance. Moreover, final state excitation weights are calculated as a function of the core-hole potential strength and lifetime. We show that these results can be used to determine material characteristics, such as the core-hole properties, from RIXS measurements.

The strength of frustration and quantum fluctuations in LiVCuO4

For the 1D-frustrated ferromagnetic J_1-J_2 model with interchain coupling added, we analyze the dynamical and static structure factor S(k,omega), the pitch angle phi of the magnetic structure, the magnetization curve of edge-shared chain cuprates, and focus on LiCuVO4 for which neither a perturbed spinon nor a spin wave approach can be applied. phi is found to be most sensitive to the interplay of frustration and quantum fluctuations. For LiVCuO4 the obtained exchange parameters J are in accord with the results for a realistic 5-band extended Hubbard model and LSDA + U predictions yielding alpha=J_2/|J_1| about 0.75 in contrast to 5.5 > alpha > 1.42 suggested in the literature. The alpha-regime of the empirical phi-values in NaCu2O2 and linarite are considered, too.

Switchable Quantum Anomalous Hall state in a strongly frustrated lattice magnet

We establish that the interplay of itinerant fermions with localized magnetic moments on a checkerboard lattice leads to magnetic flux-phases. For weak itineracy the flux-phase is coplanar and the electronic dispersion takes the shape of graphene-like Dirac fermions. Stronger itineracy drives the formation of a non-coplanar, chiral flux-phase, in which the Dirac fermions acquire a topological mass that is proportional to a ferromagnetic spin polarization. Consequently the system self-organizes into a ferromagnetic Quantum Anomalous Hall state in which the direction of its dissipationless edge-currents can be switched by an applied magnetic field.

Fractional quantum-Hall liquid spontaneously generated by strongly correlated t_2g electrons

For topologically nontrivial and very narrow bands, Coulomb repulsion between electrons has been predicted to give rise to a spontaneous fractional quantum-Hall (FQH) state in absence of magnetic fields. Here we show that strongly correlated electrons in a t_2g-orbital system on a triangular lattice self-organize into a spin-chiral magnetic ordering pattern that induces precisely the required topologically nontrivial and flat bands. This behavior is very robust and does not rely on fine tuning. In order to go beyond mean field and to study the impact of longer-range interactions, we map the low-energy electronic states onto an effective one-band model. Exact diagonalization is then used to establish signatures of a spontaneous FQH state.

Microscopic origin of large negative magneto-electric coupling in Sr$_{1/2}$Ba$_{1/2}$MnO$_{3}$

With a combined ab initio density functional and model Hamiltonian approach we establish that in the recently discovered multiferroic phase of the manganite Sr$_{1/2}$Ba$_{1/2}$MnO$_{3}$ the polar distortion of Mn and O ions is stabilized via enhanced in-plane Mn-O hybridizations. The magnetic superexchange interaction is very sensitive to the polar bond-bending distortion, and we find that this dependence directly causes a strong magnetoelectric coupling. This novel mechanism for multiferroicity is consistent with the experimentally observed reduced ferroelectric polarization upon the onset of magnetic ordering.

Dispersion of orbital excitations in 2D quantum antiferromagnets

We map the problem of the orbital excitation (orbiton) in a 2D antiferromagnetic and ferroorbital ground state onto a problem of a hole in 2D antiferromagnet. The orbiton turns out to be coupled to magnons and can only be mobile on a strongly renormalized scale by dressing with magnetic excitations. We show that this leads to a dispersion relation reflecting the two-site unit cell of the antiferromagnetic background, in contrast to the predictions based on a mean-field approximation and linear orbital-wave theory.

Ab initio calculation of d-d excitations in quasi-one-dimensional Cu d9 correlated materials

With wavefunction-based electronic-structure calculations we determine the Cu d-d excitation energies in quasi-one-dimensional spin-chain and ladder copper oxides. A complete set of local excitations has been calculated for cuprates with corner-sharing (Sr2CuO3 and SrCuO2) and edge-sharing (LiVCuO4, CuGeO3, LiCu2O2 and Li2CuO2) CuO4 plaquettes, with corner-sharing CuF6 octahedra (KCuF3), for the ladder system CaCu2O3, and for multiferroic cupric oxide CuO. Our data compare well with available results of optical absorption measurements on KCuF3 and the excitation energies found by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments for CuO. The ab initio results we report for the other materials should be helpful for the interpretation of future resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments on those highly anisotropic compounds.

Graphene on incommensurate substrates: trigonal warping and emerging Dirac cone replicas with halved group velocity

The adhesion of graphene on slightly lattice-mismatched surfaces, for instance of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) or Ir(111), gives rise to a complex landscape of sublattice symmetry-breaking potentials for the Dirac fermions. Whereas a gap at the Dirac point opens for perfectly lattice-matched graphene on hBN, we show that the small lattice incommensurability prevents the opening of this gap and rather leads to a renormalized Dirac dispersion with a trigonal warping. This warping breaks the effective time reversal symmetry in a single valley. On top of this a new set of massless Dirac fermions is generated, which are characterized by a group velocity that is half the one of pristine graphene.
