DNN predictions for pp reference $p_\mathrm{T}$ spectra at unmeasured $\sqrt{s}$

Studies of the properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma in high-energy heavy-ion collisions commonly facilitate proton-proton (pp) collisions at the same center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair as a reference measurement. In this paper, a deep neural network-based approach for interpolating and extrapolating pp reference transverse-momentum spectra to unmeasured energies is presented. The model is trained with ALICE data from LHC Runs 1 and 2 and provides predictions for center-of-mass energies relevant to LHC Run 3 and beyond.

Machine Learning Power Week 2023: Clustering in Hadronic Calorimeters

In both high-energy physics and industry applications, a crowd-sourced approach to difficult problems is becoming increasingly common. These innovative approaches are ideal for the development of future facilities where the simulations can be publicly distributed, such as the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). In this paper, we discuss a so-called ``Power Week" where graduate students were able to learn about machine learning while also contributing to an unsolved problem at a future facility. Here, the problem of interest was the clustering of the forward hadronic calorimeter in the foreseen electron-proton/ion collider experiment (ePIC) detector at the EIC. The different possible approaches, developed over the course of a single week, and their performance are detailed and summarised. Feedback on the format of the week and recommendations for future similar programs are provided in the hopes to inspire future learning opportunities for students that also serve as a crowd-sourced approaches to unsolved problems.

Proceedings of Direct photon measurement in small systems and thermal radiation from QGP with ALICE, Hard Probes conference 2024

Electromagnetic probes are a unique tool for studying the space-time evolution of the hot and dense matter created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Dielectrons are emitted during the entire evolution of the medium created in such collisions, allowing the extraction of the real direct photon fraction at vanishing mass and providing access to thermal radiation from the early hot stages of the collision. The measurement of dielectron and direct-photon production in minimum-bias pp collisions serves as a crucial baseline for the studies in heavy-ion collisions, whereas pp collisions with high charged-particle multiplicities allow the search for the possible presence of QGP in small systems. An overview of the final results of dielectron production in pp at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV and in central \PbPb collisions at \fivenn measured by ALICE is presented, together with their implications for the production of thermal radiation. Finally, an outlook on future measurements is given with the first performance studies from Run 3.
