Linear periods and distinguished local parameters

Let $F$ be a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero and odd residual characteristic. Let $X$ be the $p$-adic symmetric space $X = H \backslash G$, where $G = \mathbf{GL}_{2n}(F)$ and $H = \mathbf{GL}_n(F) \times \mathbf{GL}_n(F)$. We verify a conjecture of Sakellaridis and Venkatesh on the Langlands parameters of certain representations in the discrete spectrum of $X$.

Speh representations are relatively discrete

Let $F$ be a $p$-adic field of characteristic zero and odd residual characteristic. Let $\mathbf{Sp}_{2n}(F)$ denote the symplectic group defined over $F$, where $n\geq 2$. We prove that the Speh representations $\mathcal{U}(δ,2)$, where $δ$ is a discrete series representation of $\mathbf{GL}_n(F)$, lie in the discrete spectrum of the $p$-adic symmetric space $\mathbf{Sp}_{2n}(F) \backslash \mathbf{GL}_{2n}(F)$.

The support of closed orbit relative matrix coefficients

Let $F$ be a nonarchimedean local field with odd residual characteristic and let $G$ be the $F$-points of a connected reductive group defined over $F$. Let $θ$ be an $F$-involution of $G$. Let $H$ be the subgroup of $θ$-fixed points in $G$. Let $χ$ be a quasi-character of $H$. A smooth complex representation $(π,V)$ of $G$ is $(H,χ)$-distinguished if there exists a nonzero element $λ$ in $\operatorname{Hom}_H(π,χ)$. We generalize a construction of descended invariant linear forms on Jacquet modules first carried out independently by Kato and Takano (2008), and Lagier (2008) to the setting of $(H,χ)$-distinction. We follow the methods of Kato and Takano, providing a new proof of similar results of Delorme (2010). Moreover, we give an $(H,χ)$-analogue of Kato and Takano's relative version of the Jacquet Subrepresentation Theorem. In the case that $χ$ is unramified, $π$ is parabolically induced from a $θ$-stable parabolic subgroup of $G$, and $λ$ arises via the closed orbit in $Q\backslash G / H$, we study the (non)vanishing of the descended forms via the support of $λ$-relative matrix coefficients.

Local unitary periods and relative discrete series

Let $F$ be a $p$-adic field ($p\neq 2$), let $E$ be a quadratic Galois extension of $F$, and let $n \geq 2$. We construct representations in the discrete spectrum of the $p$-adic symmetric space $H \backslash G$, where $G = \mathbf{GL}_{2n}(E)$ and $H = \mathbf{U}_{E/F}(F)$ is a quasi-split unitary group over $F$.

Relative discrete series representations for two quotients of $p$-adic $\mathbf{GL}_n$

We provide an explicit construction of representations in the discrete spectrum of two $p$-adic symmetric spaces. We consider $\mathbf{GL}_n(F) \times \mathbf{GL}_n(F) \backslash \mathbf{GL}_{2n}(F)$ and $\mathbf{GL}_n(F) \backslash \mathbf{GL}_n(E)$, where $E$ is a quadratic Galois extension of a nonarchimedean local field $F$ of characteristic zero and odd residual characteristic. The proof of the main result involves an application of a symmetric space version of Casselman's Criterion for square integrability due to Kato and Takano.
