On the Visibility category of the Shafarevich--Tate group

Given an elliptic curve $E$ over $\Q$ and a nontrivial element $\sigma$ of its Shafarevich--Tate group $\Sha(E)$, we introduce the \textbf{Visualization category} $\V(E; \sigma)$ of abelian varieties that ``visualize'' $\sigma$ in the sense of Mazur, and we study minimal objects in this category. In particular, we show that there can be several minimal visualizing abelian varieties of different dimensions, answering a question of Mazur. We revisit two constructions of visualizing abelian varieties: restriction of scalars (as in the work of Agashe and Stein), and a construction due to de Jong (as in the work of Cremona and Mazur). We show that restriction of scalars typically produces minimal visualizations. When $\sigma$ has order $2$ or $3$, we build upon the de Jong construction and make it totally explicit. While the de Jong construction can produce non-minimal objects, an appropriate choice in the construction for order $2$ elements $\sigma$ yields an explicit genus $2$ curve whose Jacobian is a minimal visualization. For order $3$ elements we apply our algorithmic construction to Fisher's database of such elements, and obtain computational evidence that, in the absence of a $3$-isogeny, the de Jong construction yields a minimal visualization.

Picard rank and Ulrich line bundles on bidouble planes

We determine the Picard number and the Ulrich complexity of general bidouble covers of the projective plane, providing the first systematic study of Ulrich bundles on non-cyclic abelian covers. For a bidouble plane branched along three smooth curves of degrees $n_1,n_2,n_3$, we show that $\rho(S)=1$ unless $(n_1,n_2,n_3)$ belongs to an explicit list, thereby extending Buium's classical results on double planes to the non-cyclic case. As an application, we determine the range of branch degrees for which Ulrich line bundles could exist. Our method combines the invariant-theoretic decomposition of $H^2(S,\mathbb{Q})$ under the Galois group with cohomological criteria for Ulrich bundles.

On Diophantine properties for values of Dedekind zeta functions

We study the Northcott and Bogomolov property for special values of Dedekind $ζ$-functions at real values $σ\in \mathbb{R}$. We prove, in particular, that the Bogomolov property is not satisfied when $σ\geq \frac{1}{2}$. If $σ> 1$, we produce certain families of number fields having arbitrarily large degrees, whose Dedekind $ζ$-functions $ζ_K(s)$ attain arbitrarily small values at $s = σ$. On the other hand, if $\frac{1}{2} \leq σ\leq 1$, we construct suitable families of quadratic number fields, employing either Soundararajan's resonance method, which works when $\frac{1}{2} \leq σ< 1$, or results on random Euler products by Granville and Soundararajan, and by Lamzouri, which work when $\frac{1}{2} < σ\leq 1$. We complete the study by proving that the Dedekind $ζ$ function together with the degree satisfies the Northcott property for every complex $s\in{\mathbb{C}}$ such that $\mathrm{Re}(s) <0$, generalizing previous work of Généreux and Lalín.

The general ternary form can be recovered by its Hessian

The Hessian map is the rational map that sends a homogeneous polynomial to the determinant of its Hessian matrix. We prove that the Hessian map is birational on its image for ternary forms of degree $d\ge 4$, $d\neq 5$, by considering the action of the orthogonal group. In a previous paper we proved the analogous result for binary forms, with more geometric techniques.

A refined Chabauty--Coleman bound for surfaces

Caro and Pasten gave an explicit upper bound on the number of rational points on a hyperbolic surface that is embedded in an abelian variety of rank at most one. We show how to use their method to produce a refined bound on the number of rational points on the surface $W_2 := C+C$ in the case of a hyperelliptic curve $C$ of genus $3$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. Combining this with work of Siksek, we use this to determine $W_2(\mathbb{Q})$ in a selection of examples.

Watkins's conjecture for quadratic twists of Elliptic Curves with Prime Power Conductor

Watkins' conjecture asserts that the rank of an elliptic curve is upper bounded by the $2$-adic valuation of its modular degree. We show that this conjecture is satisfied when $E$ is any quadratic twist of an elliptic curve with rational $2$-torsion and prime power conductor. Furthermore, we give a lower bound of the congruence number for elliptic curves of the form $y^2=x^3-dx$, with $d$ a biquadratefree integer.

Linear $x$-coordinate relations of triples on elliptic curves

For an elliptic curve $E$ defined over the field $\mathbb{C}$ of complex numbers, we classify all translates of elliptic curves in $E^3$ such that the $x$-coordinates satisfy a linear equation. This classification enables us to establish a relation between the rank of finite rank subgroups of $E$ and triples in $E$ whose $x$-coordinates are linearly related. The method of proof integrates complex analytic techniques on elliptic curves with results of Gao, Ge and Kühne on Uniform Mordell-Lang Conjecture for subvarieties in abelian varieties.

On the fibres of an elliptic surface where the rank does not jump

For a non-constant elliptic surface over $\mathbb{P}^1$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, it is a result of Silverman that the Mordell--Weil rank of the fibres is at least the rank of the group of sections, up to finitely many fibres. If the elliptic surface is non-isotrivial one expects that this bound is an equality for infinitely many fibres, although no example is known unconditionally. Under the Bunyakovsky conjecture, such an example has been constructed by Neumann and Setzer. In this note we show that the Legendre elliptic surface has the desired property, conditional on the existence of infinitely many Mersenne primes.

Watkins' conjecture for elliptic curves over function fields

In 2002 Watkins conjectured that given an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, its Mordell-Weil rank is at most the $2$-adic valuation of its modular degree. We consider the analogous problem over function fields of positive characteristic, and we prove it in several cases. More precisely, every modular semi-stable elliptic curve over $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ after extending constant scalars, and every quadratic twist of a modular elliptic curve over $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ by a polynomial with sufficiently many prime factors satisfy the analogue of Watkins' conjecture. Furthermore, for a well-known family of elliptic curves with unbounded rank due to Ulmer, we prove the analogue of Watkins' conjecture.

A Chabauty-Coleman bound for surfaces

Building on work by Chabauty from 1941, Coleman proved in 1985 an explicit bound for the number of rational points of a curve $C$ of genus $g\ge 2$ defined over a number field $F$, with Jacobian of rank at most $g-1$. Namely, in the case $F=\mathbb{Q}$, if $p>2g$ is a prime of good reduction, then the number of rational points of $C$ is at most the number of $\mathbb{F}_p$-points plus a contribution coming from the canonical class of $C$. We prove a result analogous to Coleman's bound in the case of a hyperbolic surface $X$ over a number field, embedded in an abelian variety $A$ of rank at most one, under suitable conditions on the reduction type at the auxiliary prime. This provides the first extension of Coleman's explicit bound beyond the case of curves. The main innovation in our approach is a new method to study the intersection of a $p$-adic analytic subgroup with a subvariety of $A$ by means of overdetermined systems of differential equations in positive characteristic.
