Physical Properties of Strangelets

Low-baryon number lumps of strange quark matter, strangelets, are presently searched for in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion experiments at CERN and Brookhaven. This paper gives an overview of the physical properties of strangelets with emphasis on experimental signatures such as mass and charge. Direct solutions of the Dirac equation with MIT bag model boundary conditions are applied and compared to calculations based on a smoothed density of states, as well as to simple mass-formulae based on the MIT bag. Most strangelet properties can be understood within an approximation including bulk, surface and curvature energy contributions.

STRANGELETS AT NON-ZERO TEMPERATURE

A description of strange quark matter at finite temperature is given, with emphasis on the inclusion of finite size effects. For massless quarks all thermodynamic quantities can be evaluated analytically, while the case of massive quarks must be treated numerically. The resulting model is applied to the phase equilibrium between strange hadronic matter and strangelets, and some preliminary results are given.

Small Deviations from the R^1/4 Law, the Fundamental Plane, and Phase Densities of Elliptical Galaxies

The light profiles of elliptical (E) galaxies are known to display small systematic deviations (0.1-0.2 mag.) from the R^1/4 law. In this paper we show that the senses and amplitudes of these departures can be naturally accounted for by a simple distribution function constructed on the basis of statistical mechanics of violent relaxation. As a consequence, detailed light-profiles can be used to infer about the central potentials of E galaxies (the only free shape parameter of our model). Furthermore, the small deviations have recently been shown to correlate with luminosity, L. This observation entails a slight breaking of the generally assumed structural homology between E galaxies. Using our model we parametrize this broken homology by establishing a correlation between a suitably normalized central potential and luminosity. The non-homology means that a basic assumption in the interpretation of the Fundamental Plane (FP) breaks down, and with it the conclusions derived from it. Instead, by assuming that M/L is independent of luminosity, we derive a relation akin to the FP directly from our correlation. This implies that the FP may have a simple stellar dynamical origin. We can reproduce the observed Carlberg-Kormendy relation for the central phase-space densities (f_c) of E galaxies of identical structure, f_c = L^-2.35, but non-homology changes it to a much weaker dependence (f_c = L^-1.5 for constant M/L) which would imply that the central phase-space densities of ellipticals are comparable to those of spiral galaxies. Thus dissipationless merging is consistent with the FP, although HST observations, notably the presence of nuclear embedded disks, indicate that the assumptions behind our model break down for the nuclei of faint E galaxies in which dissipative processes seem to be important.

Physics of Strangelets

After a brief introduction to the physics of bulk strange quark matter (SQM) this review focuses on the properties of low baryon number strangelets presently searched for in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion experiments at CERN and Brookhaven. Shell-model calculations reveal interesting (meta)stability properties in the experimentally accessible regime. A liquid drop model (Fermi-gas model) is shown to explain the overall behavior of the mode-filling calculations, leading to a physical understanding of strangelet properties, which can be generalized to non-zero temperature and pressure.

Shell model versus liquid drop model for strangelets

An ansatz for the curvature contribution to the density of states for massive quarks in a bag is given and shown to reproduce exact mode-filling calculations. A mass-formula for spherical lumps of 3-flavor quark matter is derived self-consistently from an asymptotic expansion within the MIT bag model, taking into account bulk, surface, and curvature contributions. Shell model calculations are performed for a variety of strange quark masses and bag constants, and the results shown to match nicely with the asymptotic expansion.

Nucleation of quark matter bubbles in neutron stars

The thermal nucleation of quark matter bubbles inside neutron stars is examined for various temperatures which the star may realistically encounter during its lifetime. It is found that for a bag constant less than a critical value, a very large part of the star will be converted into the quark phase within a fraction of a second. Depending on the equation of state for neutron star matter and strange quark matter, all or some of the outer parts of the star may subsequently be converted by a slower burning or a detonation.
