Revisiting Error Feedback for Model Quantization

We study causal error-feedback coefficients as design variables for model quantization. Modeling instantaneous quantization errors as independent, zero-mean variables with a common fixed variance, we formulated a metric-dependent trace problem for designing feedback coefficients. The formulation resembles fixed-order GPTQ/LDLQ feedback and supports Jacobian-aware designs that account for downstream error propagation. For a positive-definite metric $\boldsymbol{H}$, we prove that the joint rotation-feedback trace minimum is $n\det(\boldsymbol{H})^{1/n}$ and present an attaining pair using the geometric mean decomposition. Experiments on synthetic networks, trained MLPs, and language models show benefits from downstream-sensitive feedback, but also reveal that trace optimality need not improve finite-level performance. Small QAT experiments further illustrate direct loss-driven feedback tuning with fixed or trainable network weights.

Asymptotic analysis of cooperative censoring policies in sensor networks

The problem of cooperative data censoring in battery-powered multihop sensor networks is analyzed in this paper. We are interested in scenarios where nodes generate messages (which are related to the sensor measurements) that can be graded with some importance value. Less important messages can be censored in order to save energy for later communications. The problem is modeled using a joint Markov Decision Process of the whole network dynamics, and a theoretically optimal censoring policy, which maximizes a long-term reward, is found. Though the optimal censoring rules are computationally prohibitive, our analysis suggests that, under some conditions, they can be approximated by a finite collection of constant-threshold rules. A centralized algorithm for the computation of these thresholds is proposed. The experimental simulations show that cooperative censoring policies are energy-efficient, and outperform other non-cooperative schemes.

Censoring Diffusion for Harvesting WSNs

In this paper, we analyze energy-harvesting adaptive diffusion networks for a distributed estimation problem. In order to wisely manage the available energy resources, we propose a scheme where a censoring algorithm is jointly applied over the diffusion strategy. An energy-aware variation of a diffusion algorithm is used, and a new way of measuring the relevance of the estimates in diffusion networks is proposed in order to apply a subsequent censoring mechanism. Simulation results show the potential benefit of integrating censoring schemes in energy-constrained diffusion networks.
