Blow-ups of order types of positive density

Order types are an equivalence relation between point configurations that capture their combinatorial and convexity properties. Let $P$ be a $κ$-colored sequence of $n \ge d+1$ points in general position in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Let $ρ$ be a $κ$-colored order type on $k \le d+1$ points that has positive density on $P$; that is, for some constant $δ>0$, there are $δ\cdot \binom{n}{k}$ $k$-point subsequences of $P$ that have the same order type as $ρ$ and the same color pattern. In this paper we show that there exists a constant $c >0$ (depending only on $d, δ$, $k$ and $κ$) and disjoint subsets $X_1,\dots,X_k$ of $P$, each with at least $c \cdot n$ points, such that for every choice of $k$ points $x_i \in X_i$, $(x_1,\dots,x_k)$ has the same order type and color pattern as $ρ$.

The 3-symmetric Pseudolinear Crossing Number of $K_{33}$

We show that the 3-symmetric rectilinear and the 3-symmetric pseudolinear crossing numbers of $K_{33}$ are equal. Specifically, we prove that $\operatorname{sym}-\overline{\operatorname{cr}}_3(K_{33}) = 14 634 = \operatorname{sym}-\widetilde{\operatorname{cr}}_3(K_{33})$.

The differential on Graph Operator R(G)

Let $G=(V(G), E(G))$ be a simple graph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$. Let $S$ be a subset of $V(G)$, and let $B(S)$ be the set of neighbours of $S$ in $V(G) \setminus S$. The differential $\partial(S)$ of $S$ is the number $|B(S)|-|S|$. The maximum value of $\partial(S)$ taken over all subsets $S\subseteq V(G)$ is the differential $\partial(G)$ of $G$. The graph $R{G}$ is defined as the graph obtained from $G$ by adding a new vertex $v_e$ for each $e\in E(G)$, and by joining $v_e$ to the end vertices of $e$. In this paper we study the relationship between $\partial(G)$ and $\partial(R(G))$, and give tight asymptotic bounds for $\partial(R(G))$. We also exhibit some relationships between certain vertex sets of $G$ and $R(G)$ which involve well known graph theoretical parameters.

The Maximum Chromatic Number of the Disjointness Graph of Segments on $n$-point Sets in the Plane with $n\leq 16$

Let $P$ be a finite set of points in general position in the plane. The disjointness graph of segments $D(P)$ of $P$ is the graph whose vertices are all the closed straight line segments with endpoints in $P$, two of which are adjacent in $D(P)$ if and only if they are disjoint. As usual, we use $χ(D(P))$ to denote the chromatic number of $D(P)$, and use $d(n)$ to denote the maximum $χ(D(P))$ taken over all sets $P$ of $n$ points in general position in the plane. In this paper we show that $d(n)=n-2$ if and only if $n\in \{3,4,\ldots ,16\}$.

On the Connectivity of Token Graphs of Trees

Let $k$ and $n$ be integers such that $1\leq k \leq n-1$, and let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$. The $k$-token graph $F_k(G)$ of $G$ is the graph whose vertices are the $k$-subsets of $V(G)$, where two vertices are adjacent in $F_k(G)$ whenever their symmetric difference is an edge of $G$. In this paper we show that if $G$ is a tree, then the connectivity of $F_k(G)$ is equal to the minimum degree of $F_k(G)$.

Bounded maximum degree conjecture holds precisely for $c$-crossing-critical graphs with $c \leq 12$

We study $c$-crossing-critical graphs, which are the minimal graphs that require at least $c$ edge-crossings when drawn in the plane. For every fixed pair of integers with $c\ge 13$ and $d\ge 1$, we give first explicit constructions of $c$-crossing-critical graphs containing a vertex of degree greater than $d$. We also show that such unbounded degree constructions do not exist for $c\le 12$, precisely, that there exists a constant $D$ such that every $c$-crossing-critical graph with $c\le 12$ has maximum degree at most $D$. Hence, the bounded maximum degree conjecture of $c$-crossing-critical graphs, which was generally disproved in 2010 by Dvořák and Mohar (without an explicit construction), holds true, surprisingly, exactly for the values $c\le 12.$

The Chromatic Number of the Disjointness Graph of the Double Chain

Let $P$ be a set of $n\geq 4$ points in general position in the plane. Consider all the closed straight line segments with both endpoints in $P$. Suppose that these segments are colored with the rule that disjoint segments receive different colors. In this paper we show that if $P$ is the point configuration known as the double chain, with $k$ points in the upper convex chain and $l \ge k$ points in the lower convex chain, then $k+l- \left\lfloor \sqrt{2l+\frac{1}{4}} - \frac{1}{2}\right\rfloor$ colors are needed and that this number is sufficient.

Independence and matching numbers of some token graphs

Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$ and let $k\in\{1,\ldots,n-1\}$. The $k$-token graph $F_k(G)$ of $G$, is the graph whose vertices are the $k$-subsets of $V(G)$, where two vertices are adjacent in $F_k(G)$ whenever their symmetric difference is an edge of $G$. We study the independence and matching numbers of $F_k(G)$. We present a tight lower bound for the matching number of $F_k(G)$ for the case in which $G$ has either a perfect matching or an almost perfect matching. Also, we estimate the independence number for bipartite $k$-token graphs, and determine the exact value for some graphs.

On the Number of Order Types in Integer Grids of Small Size

Let $\{p_1,\dots,p_n\}$ and $\{q_1,\dots,q_n\}$ be two sets of $n$ labeled points in general position in the plane. We say that these two point sets have the same order type if for every triple of indices $(i,j,k)$, $p_k$ is above the directed line from $p_i$ to $p_j$ if and only if $q_k$ is above the directed line from $q_i$ to $q_j$. In this paper we give the first non-trivial lower bounds on the number of different order types of $n$ points that can be realized in integer grids of polynomial

The packing number of the double vertex graph of the path graph

Neil Sloane showed that the problem of determine the maximum size of a binary code of constant weight 2 that can correct a single adjacent transposition is equivalent to finding the packing number of a certain graph. In this paper we solve this open problem by finding the packing number of the double vertex graph (2-token graph) of a path graph. This double vertex graph is isomorphic to the Sloane's graph. Our solution implies a conjecture of Rob Pratt about the ordinary generating function of sequence A085680.

The complexity of computing the cylindrical and the $t$-circle crossing number of a graph

A plane drawing of a graph is {\em cylindrical} if there exist two concentric circles that contain all the vertices of the graph, and no edge intersects (other than at its endpoints) any of these circles. The {\em cylindrical crossing number} of a graph \(G\) is the minimum number of crossings in a cylindrical drawing of \(G\). In his influential survey on the variants of the definition of the crossing number of a graph, Schaefer lists the complexity of computing the cylindrical crossing number of a graph as an open question. In this paper we settle this by showing that this problem is NP-complete. Moreover, we show an analogous result for the natural generalization of the cylindrical crossing number, namely the \(t\)-{\em circle crossing number}.

Regularity and Planarity of Token Graphs

Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph of order $n$ and let $1\leq k< n$ be an integer. The $k$-token graph of $G$ is the graph whose vertices are all the $k$-subsets of $V$, two of which are adjacent whenever their symmetric difference is a pair of adjacent vertices in $G$. In this paper we characterize precisely, for each value of $k$, which graphs have a regular $k$-token graph and which connected graphs have a planar $k$-token graph.

The Erdős-Sós Conjecture for Geometric Graphs

Let $f(n,k)$ be the minimum number of edges that must be removed from some complete geometric graph $G$ on $n$ points, so that there exists a tree on $k$ vertices that is no longer a planar subgraph of $G$. In this paper we show that $(1/2)\frac{n^2}{k-1}-\frac{n}{2}\le f(n,k) \le 2 \frac{n(n-2)}{k-2}$. For the case when $k=n$, we show that $2 \le f(n,n) \le 3$. For the case when $k=n$ and $G$ is a geometric graph on a set of points in convex position, we show that at least three edges must be removed.

Minor crossing number is additive over arbitrary cuts

We prove that if $G$ is a graph with an minimal edge cut $F$ of size three and $G_1$, $G_2$ are the two (augmented) components of $G-F$, then the crossing number of $G$ is equal to the sum of crossing numbers of $G_1$ and $G_2$. Combining with known results, this implies that crossing number is additive over edge-cuts of size $d$ for $d\in\{0, 1, 2, 3\}$, whereas there are counterexamples for every $d\ge 4$. The techniques generalize to show that minor crossing number is additive over edge cuts of arbitrary size, as well as to provide bounds for crossing number additivity in arbitrary surfaces. We point out several applications to exact crossing number computation and crossing critical graphs, as well as provide a very general lower bound for the minor crossing number of the Cartesian product of an arbitrary graph with a tree.

On the number of mth roots of permutations

Let m be a fixed positive integer. It is well-known that a permutation $σ$ may have one, many, or no mth roots. In this note we provide an explicit expression and a generating function for the number of mth roots of σ. Let p_m(n) be the probability that a random n-permutation has an mth root. We also include a proof that p_m(jq)=p_m(jq+1)=... =p_m(jq+(q-1)) where j=0,1,... and m is a power of prime q.

On $(\le k)$-edges, crossings, and halving lines of geometric drawings of $K_n$

Let $P$ be a set of points in general position in the plane. Join all pairs of points in $P$ with straight line segments. The number of segment-crossings in such a drawing, denoted by $\crg(P)$, is the \emph{rectilinear crossing number} of $P$. A \emph{halving line} of $P$ is a line passing though two points of $P$ that divides the rest of the points of $P$ in (almost) half. The number of halving lines of $P$ is denoted by $h(P)$. Similarly, a $k$\emph{-edge}, $0\leq k\leq n/2-1$, is a line passing through two points of $P$ and leaving exactly $k$ points of $P$ on one side. The number of $(\le k)$-edges of $P$ is denoted by $E_{\leq k}(P) $. Let $\rcr(n)$, $h(n)$, and $E_{\leq k}(n) $ denote the minimum of $\crg(P)$, the maximum of $h(P)$, and the minimum of $E_{\leq k}(P) $, respectively, over all sets $P$ of $n$ points in general position in the plane. We show that the previously best known lower bound on $E_{\leq k}(n)$ is tight for $k<\lceil (4n-2) /9\rceil $ and improve it for all $k\geq \lceil (4n-2) /9 \rceil $. This in turn improves the lower bound on $\rcr(n)$ from $0.37968\binom{n} {4}+Θ(n^{3})$ to {277/729}\binom{n}{4}+Θ(n^{3})\geq 0.37997\binom{n}{4}+Θ(n^{3})$. We also give the exact values of $\rcr(n)$ and $h(n) $ for all $n\leq27$. Exact values were known only for $n\leq18$ and odd $n\leq21$ for the crossing number, and for $n\leq14$ and odd $n\leq21$ for halving lines.
