Transfer matrices and partition-function zeros for antiferromagnetic Potts models. VI. Square lattice with special boundary conditions

We study, using transfer-matrix methods, the partition-function zeros of the square-lattice q-state Potts antiferromagnet at zero temperature (= square-lattice chromatic polynomial) for the special boundary conditions that are obtained from an m x n grid with free boundary conditions by adjoining one new vertex adjacent to all the sites in the leftmost column and a second new vertex adjacent to all the sites in the rightmost column. We provide numerical evidence that the partition-function zeros are becoming dense everywhere in the complex q-plane outside the limiting curve B_\infty(sq) for this model with ordinary (e.g. free or cylindrical) boundary conditions. Despite this, the infinite-volume free energy is perfectly analytic in this region.

Finite-temperature phase transition in a class of 4-state Potts antiferromagnets

We argue that the 4-state Potts antiferromagnet has a finite-temperature phase transition on any Eulerian plane triangulation in which one sublattice consists of vertices of degree 4. We furthermore predict the universality class of this transition. We then present transfer-matrix and Monte Carlo data confirming these predictions for the cases of the union-jack and bisected hexagonal lattices.

On the non-ergodicity of the Swendsen-Wang-Kotecky algorithm on the kagome lattice

We study the properties of the Wang-Swendsen-Kotecky cluster Monte Carlo algorithm for simulating the 3-state kagome-lattice Potts antiferromagnet at zero temperature. We prove that this algorithm is not ergodic for symmetric subsets of the kagome lattice with fully periodic boundary conditions: given an initial configuration, not all configurations are accessible via Monte Carlo steps. The same conclusion holds for single-site dynamics.

Exact Potts Model Partition Functions for Strips of the Triangular Lattice

We present exact calculations of the Potts model partition function Z(G,q,v) for arbitrary q and temperature-like variable v on n-vertex strip graphs G of the triangular lattice for a variety of transverse widths equal to L vertices and for arbitrarily great length equal to m vertices, with free longitudinal boundary conditions and free and periodic transverse boundary conditions. These have the form Z(G,q,v)=\sum_{j=1}^{N_{Z,G,λ}} c_{Z,G,j}(λ_{Z,G,j})^{m-1}. We give general formulas for N_{Z,G,j} and its specialization to v=-1 for arbitrary L. The free energy is calculated exactly for the infinite-length limit of the graphs, and the thermodynamics is discussed. It is shown how the internal energy calculated for the case of cylindrical boundary conditions is connected with critical quantities for the Potts model on the infinite triangular lattice. Considering the full generalization to arbitrary complex q and v, we determine the singular locus {\cal B}, arising as the accumulation set of partition function zeros as m\to\infty, in the q plane for fixed v and in the v plane for fixed q.

Transfer Matrices and Partition-Function Zeros for Antiferromagnetic Potts Models III. Triangular-Lattice Chromatic Polynomial

We study the chromatic polynomial P_G(q) for m \times n triangular-lattice strips of widths m <= 12_P, 9_F (with periodic or free transverse boundary conditions, respectively) and arbitrary lengths n (with free longitudinal boundary conditions). The chromatic polynomial gives the zero-temperature limit of the partition function for the q-state Potts antiferromagnet. We compute the transfer matrix for such strips in the Fortuin--Kasteleyn representation and obtain the corresponding accumulation sets of chromatic zeros in the complex q-plane in the limit n\to\infty. We recompute the limiting curve obtained by Baxter in the thermodynamic limit m,n\to\infty and find new interesting features with possible physical consequences. Finally, we analyze the isolated limiting points and their relation with the Beraha numbers.

Transfer Matrices and Partition-Function Zeros for Antiferromagnetic Potts Models II. Extended Results for Square-Lattice Chromatic Polynomial

We study the chromatic polynomials for m \times n square-lattice strips, of width 9 <= m <= 13 (with periodic boundary conditions) and arbitrary length n (with free boundary conditions). We have used a transfer matrix approach that allowed us also to extract the limiting curves when n \to \infty. In this limit we have also obtained the isolated limiting points for these square-lattice strips and checked some conjectures related to the Beraha numbers.

Transfer Matrices and Partition-Function Zeros for Antiferromagnetic Potts Models I. General Theory and Square-Lattice Chromatic Polynomial

We study the chromatic polynomials (= zero-temperature antiferromagnetic Potts-model partition functions) P_G(q) for m \times n rectangular subsets of the square lattice, with m \le 8 (free or periodic transverse boundary conditions) and n arbitrary (free longitudinal boundary conditions), using a transfer matrix in the Fortuin-Kasteleyn representation. In particular, we extract the limiting curves of partition-function zeros when n \to\infty, which arise from the crossing in modulus of dominant eigenvalues (Beraha-Kahane-Weiss theorem). We also provide evidence that the Beraha numbers B_2,B_3,B_4,B_5 are limiting points of partition-function zeros as n \to\infty whenever the strip width m is \ge 7 (periodic transverse b.c.) or \ge 8 (free transverse b.c.). Along the way, we prove that a noninteger Beraha number (except perhaps B_{10}) cannot be a chromatic root of any graph.

Universal Amplitude Ratios in the Critical Two-Dimensional Ising Model on a Torus

Using results from conformal field theory, we compute several universal amplitude ratios for the two-dimensional Ising model at criticality on a symmetric torus. These include the correlation-length ratio x^\star = \lim_{L\to\infty} ξ(L)/L and the first four magnetization moment ratios V_{2n} = <{\cal M}^{2n}>/<{\cal M}^2>^n. As a corollary we get the first four renormalized 2n-point coupling constants for the massless theory on a symmetric torus, G_{2n}^*. We confirm these predictions by a high-precision Monte Carlo simulation.

Logarithmic Corrections and Finite-Size Scaling in the Two-Dimensional 4-State Potts Model

We analyze the scaling and finite-size-scaling behavior of the two-dimensional 4-state Potts model. We find new multiplicative logarithmic corrections for the susceptibility, in addition to the already known ones for the specific heat. We also find additive logarithmic corrections to scaling, some of which are universal. We have checked the theoretical predictions at criticality and off criticality by means of high-precision Monte Carlo data.

Absence of Phase Transition for Antiferromagnetic Potts Models via the Dobrushin Uniqueness Theorem

We prove that the $q$-state Potts antiferromagnet on a lattice of maximum coordination number $r$ exhibits exponential decay of correlations uniformly at all temperatures (including zero temperature) whenever $q > 2r$. We also prove slightly better bounds for several two-dimensional lattices: square lattice (exponential decay for $q \ge 7$), triangular lattice ($q \ge 11$), hexagonal lattice ($q \ge 4$), and Kagomé lattice ($q \ge 6$). The proofs are based on the Dobrushin uniqueness theorem.

Dynamic Critical Behavio(u)r of a Cluster Algorithm for the Ashkin--Teller Model

We study the dynamic critical behavior of a Swendsen--Wang--type algorithm for the Ashkin--Teller model. We find that the Li--Sokal bound on the autocorrelation time ($τ_{{\rm int},{\cal E}} \ge {\rm const} \times C_H$) holds along the self-dual curve of the symmetric Ashkin--Teller model, but this bound is apparently not sharp. The ratio $τ_{{\rm int},{\cal E}}/C_H$ appears to tend to infinity either as a logarithm or as a small power ($0.05 \ltapprox p \ltapprox 0.12$).
