The Local Structure of Compactified Jacobians

This paper studies the local geometry of compactified Jacobians constructed by Caporaso, Oda-Seshadri, Pandharipande, and Simpson. The main result is a presentation of the completed local ring of the compactified Jacobian of a nodal curve as an explicit ring of invariants described in terms of the dual graph of the curve. The authors have investigated the geometric and combinatorial properties of these rings in previous work, and consequences for compactified Jacobians are presented in this paper. Similar results are given for the local structure of the universal compactified Jacobian over the moduli space of stable curves.

An Abel map to the compactified Picard scheme realizes Poincaré duality

For a smooth algebraic curve X over a field, applying H_1 to the Abel map X -> Pic (X/\partial X) to the Picard scheme of X modulo its boundary realizes the Poincaré duality isomorphism H_1(X, Z/ n) -> H^1(X/ \partial X, Z/n(1)) = H^1_c(X, Z/n(1)). We show the analogous statement for the Abel map X/\partial X -> Picbar (X/\partial X) to the compactified Picard, or Jacobian, scheme, namely this map realizes the Poincaré duality isomorphism H_1(X/ \partial X, Z/n) -> H^1(X, Z/n(1)). In particular, H_1 of this Abel map is an isomorphism. In proving this result, we prove some results about Picbar that are of independent interest. The singular curve X/\partial X has a unique singularity that is an ordinary fold point, and we describe the compactified Picard scheme of such a curve up to universal homeomorphism using a presentation scheme. We construct a Mayer-Vietoris sequence for certain push-outs of schemes, and an isomorphism of functors π_1^{ell} Pic^0(-) = H^1(-,Z_ell(1)).

The singularities and birational geometry of the universal compactified Jacobian

In this paper we establish that the singularities of the universal compactified Jacobian are canonical if the genus is at least four. As a corollary we determine the Kodaira dimension and the Iitaka fibration of the universal compactified Jacobian for every degree and genus. We also determine the birational automorphism group for every degree if the genus is at least twelve. This extends work of G. Farkas and A. Verra, as well as that of G. Bini, C. Fontanari and the third author.

The geometry and combinatorics of cographic toric face rings

In this paper we define and study a ring associated to a graph that we call the cographic toric face ring, or simply the cographic ring. The cographic ring is the toric face ring defined by the following equivalent combinatorial structures of a graph: the cographic arrangement of hyperplanes, the Voronoi polytope, and the poset of totally cyclic orientations. We describe the properties of the cographic ring and, in particular, relate the invariants of the ring to the invariants of the corresponding graph. Our study of the cographic ring fits into a body of work on describing rings constructed from graphs. Among the rings that can be constructed from a graph, cographic rings are particularly interesting because they appear in the study of compactified Jacobians of nodal curves.

An Explicit Non-smoothable Component of the Compactified Jacobian

This paper studies the components of the moduli space of rank 1, torsion-free sheaves, or compactified Jacobian, of a non-Gorenstein curve. We exhibit a generically reduced component of dimension equal to the arithmetic genus and prove that this is the only non-smoothable component when the curve has a unique singularity that is of finite representation type. Analogous results are proven for the Hilbert scheme of points and the Quot scheme parameterizing quotients of the dualizing sheaf.

Moduli of Generalized Line Bundles on a Ribbon

A ribbon is a first-order thickening of a non-singular curve. Motivated by a question of Eisenbud and Green, we show that a compactification of the moduli space of line bundles on a ribbon is given by the moduli space of semi-stable sheaves. We then describe the geometry of this space, determining the irreducible components, the connected components, and the smooth locus.

A Riemann singularity theorem for integral curves

We prove results generalizing the classical Riemann Singularity Theorem to the case of integral, singular curves. The main result is a computation of the multiplicity of the theta divisor of an integral, nodal curve at an arbitrary point. We also conjecture a general formula for the multiplicity of points on the theta divisor of a singular integral curve and present some evidence for this conjecture. Our results give a partial answer to a question posed by Lucia Caporaso in a recent paper.
