Two isoperimetric inequalities for the Sobolev constant

In this note we prove two isoperimetric inequalities for the sharp constant in the Sobolev embedding and its associated extremal function. The first such inequality is a variation on the classical Schwarz Lemma from complex analysis, similar to recent inequalities of Burckel, Marshall, Minda, Poggi-Corradini, and Ransford, while the second generalises an isoperimetric inequality for the first eigenfunction of the Laplacian due to Payne and Rayner.

Eigenvalues of Euclidean wedge domains in higher dimensions

In this paper, we use a weighted isoperimetric inequality to give a lower bound on the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the Laplacian on a bounded domain inside a Euclidean cone. Our bound is sharp, in that only sectors realize it. This result generalizes a lower bound of Payne and Weinberger in two dimensions.

Isoperimetric inequalities and variations on Schwarz's lemma

In this note we prove a version of the classical Schwarz lemma for the first eigenvalues of the Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary data. A key ingredient in our proof is an isoperimetric inequality for the first eigenfunction, due to Payne and Rayner, which we reinterpret as an isoperimetric inequality for a (singular) conformal metric on a bounded domain in the plane.

Interpolating between torsional rigidity and principal frequency

A one-parameter family of variational problems is introduced that interpolates between torsional rigidity and the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the Laplacian. The associated partial differential equation is derived, which is shown to have positive solutions in many cases. Results are obtained regarding extremal domains and regarding variations of the domain or the parameter.

Coplanar k-unduloids are nondegenerate

We prove each embedded, constant mean curvature (CMC) surface in Euclidean space with genus zero and finitely many coplanar ends is nondegenerate: there is no nontrivial square-integrable solution to the Jacobi equation, the linearization of the CMC condition. This implies that the moduli space of such coplanar surfaces is a real-analytic manifold and that a neighborhood of these in the full CMC moduli space is itself a manifold. Nondegeneracy further implies (infinitesimal and local) rigidity in the sense that the asymptotes map is an analytic immersion on these spaces, and also that the coplanar classifying map is an analytic diffeomorphism.

A Payne-Weinberger eigenvalue estimate for wedge domains on spheres

A Faber-Krahn type argument gives a sharp lower estimate for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue for subdomains of wedge domains in spheres, generalizing the inequality in the plane, found by Payne and Weinberger. An application is an alternative proof to the finiteness of a Brownian motion capture time estimate.

On the nondegeneracy of constant mean curvature surfaces

We prove that many complete, noncompact, constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces $f:Σ\to \R^3$ are nondegenerate; that is, the Jacobi operator $Δ_f + |A_f|^2$ has no $L^2$ kernel. In fact, if $Σ$ has genus zero and $f(Σ)$ is contained in a half-space, then we find an explicit upper bound for the dimension of the $L^2$ jernel in terms of the number of non-cylindrical ends. Our main tool is a conjugation operation on Jacobi fields which linearizes the conjugate cousin construction. Consequences include partial regularity for CMC moduli space, a larger class of CMC surfaces to use in gluing constructions, and a surprising characterization of CMC surfaces via spinning spheres.

A Capture Problem in Brownian Motion and Eigenvalues of Spherical Domains

We resolve a question of Bramson and Griffeath by showing that the expected capture time of four independent Brownian predators pursuing one Brownian prey on a line is finite. Our main tool is an eigenvalue estimate for a particular spherical domain, which we obtain by a coning construction and domain perturbation.

An End to End Gluing Construction for Metrics of Constant Positive Scalar Curvature

Complete constant positive scalar curvature metrics on S^n - {p_1, ..., p_k} admit a definite asymptotic structure; i.e. the metric is asymptotic to a specific S^{n-1}-invariant metric near the puncture points. This allows one to glue together two such metrics near their puncture points, provided the asymptotic structures match, and create a metric whose scalar curvature is very close to constant. In this paper we perturb this new metric to obtain a metric of constant scalar curvature.
