Power sums and Siegel-type zero-free regions for L-functions

Let $\pi$ and $\pi'$ be unitary cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}(n)$ and $\mathrm{GL}(n')$ over a number field $F$. Let $\mathfrak{C}_{\pi}$ be the analytic conductor of $\pi$. We develop a new approach to zero-free regions for $L$-functions via lower bounds for power sums, proving for all $\varepsilon>0$ the existence of ineffective constants $c=c_{n,F,\varepsilon}>0$ and $c'=c'_{n,F,\pi',\varepsilon}>0$ such that the standard $L$-function $L(s,\pi)$ satisfies \[ |L(\sigma+it,\pi)|\geq c(\mathfrak{C}_{\pi}(|t|+3))^{-\varepsilon},\qquad \sigma\geq 1-c(\mathfrak{C}_{\pi}(|t|+3))^{-\varepsilon} \] and the Rankin-Selberg $L$-function $L(s,\pi\times\pi')$ satisfies \[ |L(\sigma+it,\pi\times\pi')|\geq c'(\mathfrak{C}_{\pi}(|t|+3))^{-\varepsilon},\qquad \sigma\geq 1-c'(\mathfrak{C}_{\pi}(|t|+3))^{-\varepsilon}. \] Applications include improvements to the prime number theorems for these $L$-functions and new generalizations of the Brauer-Siegel theorem.

On the paucity of lattice triangles

A rational triangle $T$ (one whose angles are rational multiples of $\pi$) unfolds to a translation surface ${X_T}$. The lattice triangle problem asks to classify those $T$ for which ${X_T}$ is a Veech (lattice) surface, which means that the $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb R)$-orbit of ${X_T}$ is closed in its stratum (so its projection to moduli space is a Teichm\"uller curve). The most mysterious regime is the "hard obtuse window" (largest angle in $(\pi/2,2\pi/3]$), where it is conjectured that no lattice triangles exist. Using an arithmetic reformulation of the Mirzakhani-Wright rank obstruction, we prove a quantitative theorem that rules out all but a proportion $n^{-1+o(1)}$ of the triangles in this window with denominator $n$. The main technical result in our proof was autoformalized by AxiomProver in Lean (using mathlib).

Landau-Siegel zeros of Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions

We establish standard zero-free regions with no exceptional Landau-Siegel zeros for Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions and triple product $L$-functions in several new families for which modularity is not yet known.

Large sieves for $\mathrm{GL}_n$ and applications

Let $\mathfrak{F}_n$ be the set of unitary cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n$ over a number field $F$, and let $S\subseteq\mathfrak{F}_n$ be an arbitrary finite subset. Given $\pi_0\in\mathfrak{F}_{n_0}$, we establish large sieve inequalities for the families $\{L(s,\pi)\colon \pi\in S\}$ and $\{L(s,\pi\times\pi_0)\colon \pi\in S\}$ that, unlike previous results, are independent of progress towards the generalized Ramanujan conjecture, and simultaneously handle the Dirichlet coefficients of $L$, $L^{-1}$, and $\log L$. We also give the first such result that improves upon the trivial bound for short sums. We present several applications, including: (1) the strongest bound for $\sum_{\pi\in S}|L(\frac{1}{2},\pi)|^2$ that holds for arbitrary $S$, (2) significant improvements to zero density estimates for families of automorphic and Rankin--Selberg $L$-functions, counting violations to the generalized Riemann hypothesis near $\mathrm{Re}(s)=1$, (3) the removal of all unproven hypotheses in the conditional log-free zero density estimate for families of Rankin--Selberg $L$-functions proved by Brumley, Thorner, and Zaman, and (4) an improvement of the density theorem for non-archimedean Langlands parameters due to Lichtman and Pascadi, counting violations to the generalized Ramanujan conjecture.

Tatuzawa's theorem for Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions

Let $\pi$ and $\pi'$ be unitary cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}(n)$ and $\mathrm{GL}(n')$ over a number field $F$. We establish a new zero-free region for all $\mathrm{GL}(1)$-twists of the Rankin-Selberg $L$-function $L(s,\pi\times\pi')$, generalizing Tatuzawa's refinement of Siegel's work on Dirichlet $L$-functions. As a corollary, we show that for all $\varepsilon>0$, there exists an effectively computable constant $c>0$ depending only on $(n,n',[F:\mathbb{Q}],\varepsilon)$ such that $L(s,\pi\times\pi')$ has at most one zero (necessarily simple) in the region \[ \mathrm{Re}(s)\geq 1-c/(C(\pi)C(\pi')(|\mathrm{Im}(s)|+1))^{\varepsilon}, \] where $C(\pi)$ and $C(\pi')$ are the analytic conductors. A crucial component of our proof is a new standard zero-free region for any twist of $L(s,\pi\times\widetilde{\pi})$ by an idele class character $\chi$ apart from a possible single exceptional zero (necessarily real and simple) that can occur only when $\pi\otimes\chi^2=\pi$. This extends earlier work of Humphries and Thorner.

Exceptional zeros of $\mathrm{GL}_3\times\mathrm{GL}_3$ Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions

Let $\chi$ be an idele class character over a number field $F$, and let $\pi,\pi'$ be any two cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{A}_F)$. We prove that the Rankin-Selberg $L$-function $L(s,\mathrm{Sym}^2(\pi)\times(\mathrm{Sym}^2 (\pi')\otimes\chi))$ has a "standard" zero-free region with no exceptional Landau-Siegel zero except possibly when it is divisible by the $L$-function of a real idele class character. In particular, no such zero exists if $\pi$ is non-dihedral and $\pi'$ is not a twist of $\pi$. Until now, this was only known when $\pi=\pi'$, $\pi$ is self-dual, and $\chi$ is trivial.

A new bound on the relative error in the Chebotarev density theorem

We unconditionally improve the uniformity in the Chebotarev density theorem for Galois extensions of number fields using nonabelian base change. This leads to the first theoretical improvement over Weiss's bound for the least norm of an unramified prime ideal with given Artin symbol.

Zeros of $L$-functions in families near the critical line

We combine the relative trace formula with analytic methods to obtain zero density estimate for $L$-functions in various families of automorphic representations for $\mathrm{GL}(m)$. Applications include strong bounds for the average analytic rank of these $L$-functions at the central point and average equidistribution results for the imaginary parts of the zeros.

Zeros of $L$-functions and large partial sums of Dirichlet coefficients

Let $L(s,\pi)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\lambda_{\pi}(n)n^{-s}$ be an $L$-function that satisfies a weak form of the generalized Ramanujan conjecture. We prove that large partial sums of $\lambda_{\pi}(n)$ strongly repel the low-lying zeros of $L(s,\pi)$ away from the critical line. Our results extend and quantitatively improve preceding work of Granville and Soundararajan.

Remarks on Landau-Siegel zeros

For certain families of $L$-functions, we prove that if each $L$-function in the family has only real zeros in a fixed yet arbitrarily small neighborhood of $s=1$, then one may considerably improve upon the known results on Landau-Siegel zeros. Sarnak and the third author proved a similar result under much more restrictive hypotheses.

Exceptional zeros of Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions and joint Sato-Tate distributions

Let $\chi$ be an idele class character over a number field $F$, and let $\pi,\pi'$ be non-dihedral twist-inequivalent cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{A}_F)$. We prove that if $m,n\geq 0$ are integers, $m+n\geq 1$, $F$ is totally real, $\chi$ corresponds with a ray class character, and $\pi,\pi'$ correspond with primitive non-CM holomorphic Hilbert cusp forms, then the Rankin--Selberg $L$-function $L(s,\mathrm{Sym}^m(\pi)\times(\mathrm{Sym}^n(\pi')\otimes\chi))$ has a standard zero-free region with no exceptional Landau--Siegel zero. This is new even for $F=\mathbb{Q}$. As an application, we establish the strongest known unconditional effective rates of convergence in the Sato--Tate distribution for $\pi$ and the joint Sato--Tate distribution for $\pi$ and $\pi'$.

New variants of arithmetic quantum ergodicity

We establish two new variants of arithmetic quantum ergodicity. The first is for self-dual $\mathrm{GL}_2$ Hecke-Maass newforms over $\mathbb{Q}$ as the level and Laplace eigenvalue vary jointly. The second is a nonsplit analogue wherein almost all restrictions of Hilbert (respectively Bianchi) Hecke-Maass cusp forms to the modular surface dissipate as their Laplace eigenvalues grow.

Bounds for moments of $\ell$-torsion in class groups

Fix a number field $k$, integers $\ell, n \geq 2$, and a prime $p$. For all $r \geq 1$, we prove strong unconditional upper bounds on the $r$-th moment of $\ell$-torsion in the ideal class groups of degree $p$ extensions of $k$ and of degree $n$ $S_n$-extensions of $k$, improving upon results of Ellenberg, Pierce and Wood as well as GRH-conditional results of Frei and Widmer. For large $r$, our results are comparable with work of Heath-Brown and Pierce for imaginary quadratic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$. When $r=1$, our results are new even for the family of all quadratic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$, leading to an improved upper bound for the count of degree $p$ $D_p$-extensions over $\mathbb{Q}$ (where $D_p$ is the dihedral group of order $2p$).

A new zero-free region for Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions

Let $\pi$ and $\pi'$ be cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}(n)$ and $\mathrm{GL}(n')$ with unitary central characters. We establish a new zero-free region for all $\mathrm{GL}(1)$-twists of the Rankin-Selberg $L$-function $L(s,\pi\times\pi')$, generalizing Siegel's celebrated work on Dirichlet $L$-functions. As an application, we prove the first unconditional Siegel-Walfisz theorem for the Dirichlet coefficients of $-L'(s,\pi\times\pi')/L(s,\pi\times\pi')$. Also, for $n\leq 8$, we extend the region of holomorphy and nonvanishing for the twisted symmetric power $L$-functions $L(s,\pi,\mathrm{Sym}^n\otimes\chi)$ of any cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}(2)$.

An explicit version of Bombieri's log-free density estimate and S\'ark\"ozy's theorem for shifted primes

We make explicit Bombieri's refinement of Gallagher's log-free "large sieve density estimate near $\sigma = 1$" for Dirichlet $L$-functions. We use this estimate and recent work of Green to prove that if $N\geq 2$ is an integer, $A\subseteq\{1,\ldots,N\}$, and for all primes $p$ no two elements in $A$ differ by $p-1$, then $|A|\ll N^{1-1/10^{18}}$. This strengthens a theorem of S\'ark\"ozy.

Highly Uniform Prime Number Theorems

We prove a highly uniform version of the prime number theorem for a certain class of $L$-functions. The range of $x$ depends polynomially on the analytic conductor, and the error term is expressed in terms of an optimization problem depending explicitly on the available zero-free region. The class contains the Rankin-Selberg $L$-function $L(s,\pi \times \pi')$ associated to cuspidal automorphic representations $\pi$ and $\pi'$ of $\mathrm{GL}_{m}$ and $\mathrm{GL}_{m'}$, respectively. Our main result implies the first uniform prime number theorems for such $L$-functions (with analytic conductor uniformity) in complete generality.

Effective quantum unique ergodicity for Hecke-Maass newforms and Landau-Siegel zeros

We show that Landau-Siegel zeros for Dirichlet $L$-functions do not exist or quantum unique ergodicity for $\mathrm{GL}_2$ Hecke-Maass newforms holds with an effective rate of convergence. This follows from a more general result: Landau-Siegel zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions repel the zeros of all other automorphic $L$-functions from the line $\mathrm{Re}(s)=1$.

Refinements to the prime number theorem for arithmetic progressions

We prove a version of the prime number theorem for arithmetic progressions that is uniform enough to deduce the Siegel-Walfisz theorem, Hoheisel's asymptotic for intervals of length $x^{1-\delta}$, a Brun-Titchmarsh bound, and Linnik's bound on the least prime in an arithmetic progression as corollaries. Our proof uses the Vinogradov-Korobov zero-free region, a log-free zero density estimate, and the Deuring-Heilbronn zero repulsion phenomenon. Improvements exist when the modulus is sufficiently powerful.
