Unburied Higgs

Many models of physics beyond the Standard Model yield exotic Higgs decays. Some of these, particularly those in which the Higgs decays to light quarks or gluons, can be very difficult to discover experimentally. Here we introduce a new set of jet substructure techniques designed to search for such a Higgs when its dominant decay is into gluons via light, uncolored resonances. We study this scenario in both V+h and tt+h production channels, and find both channels lead to discovery at the LHC with more than 5 sigma significance at 100 inverse femtobarn.

Gamma Ray Spectra from Dark Matter Annihilation and Decay

In this paper, we study gamma ray spectra for various scenarios of dark matter annihilation and decay. We focus on processes which generate only high-energy photons or leptons and photons, but no proton-antiproton pairs, to be compatible with PAMELA's data. We investigate photons produced directly from two-body decay chains and photons produced together with charged particles. For the former case we also include the process DM(+DM) -> N phi -> 2N gamma which can arise from specific strongly-coupled dark matter scenarios. For the latter case, photons are either generated by final state radiation from high-energy leptons or are directly generated from contact interactions represented by higher-order (non-renormalizable) operators obtained after integrating out heavy modes. We compare their overall annihilation cross-sections/decay rates taking into account chiral suppression (in the s-wave approximation), dimension of operators and dark matter particle properties. A rough estimate shows that, for a dark matter particle with a mass of O(1 TeV), the hard photon spectra in direct electron-positron-photon final states arising from either scalar boson dark matter annihilation/decay or Majorana fermion dark matter annihilation are dominated by higher-order operators if the scale of the leading operator is lower than O(1000 TeV). Otherwise, all the photon spectra arising in this way are dominated by final state radiation. Among the spectra studied, the higher-order operators spectrum is the hardest while the final state radiation spectrum with an intermediate decay is the softest.

Dark Matter Through the Neutrino Portal

We consider a model of dark matter whose most prominent signature is a monochromatic flux of TeV neutrinos from the galactic center. As an example of a general scenario, we consider a specific model where the dark matter is a fermion in the adjoint representation of a hidden SU(N) gauge group that confines at GeV energies. The absence of light fermionic states in the dark sector ensures stability of dark matter on cosmological time scales. Dark matter couples to the standard model via the neutrino portal, that is, the singlet operator H L constructed from the Higgs and lepton doublets, which is the lowest dimensional fermionic singlet operator in the standard model. This coupling prompts dark matter decay where the dominant decay channel has one neutrino (and at least one dark glueball) in the final state. Other decay channels with charged standard model particles involve more particles in the final state and are therefore suppressed by phase space. In consequence, the standard indirect detection signals like gamma-ray photons, antiprotons and positrons are suppressed with respect to the neutrino signal. This coupling via the neutrino portal is most robustly constrained by Super-Kamiokande, which restricts the dark matter lifetime to be larger than 10^25 seconds. In the near future, the scenario will be probed by the new generation of neutrino telescopes. ANTARES will be sensitive to a dark matter lifetime of order 10^26 seconds, while IceCube/DeepCore can probe a lifetime as large as 10^27 seconds.

Probing Supersymmetry With Third-Generation Cascade Decays

The chiral structure of supersymmetric particle couplings involving third generation Standard Model fermions depends on left-right squark and slepton mixings as well as gaugino-higgsino mixings. The shapes and intercorrelations of invariant mass distributions of a first or second generation lepton with bottoms and taus arising from adjacent branches of SUSY cascade decays are shown to be a sensitive probe of this chiral structure. All possible cascade decays that can give rise to such correlations within the MSSM are considered. For bottom-lepton correlations the distinctive structure of the invariant mass distributions distinguishes between decays originating from stop or sbottom squarks through either an intermediate chargino or neutralino. For decay through a chargino the spins of the stop and chargino are established by the form of the distribution. When the bottom charge is signed through soft muon tagging, the structure of the same-sign and opposite-sign invariant mass distributions depends on a set function of left-right and gaugino-higgsino mixings, as well as establishes the spins of all the superpartners in the sequential two-body cascade decay. Tau-lepton and tau-tau invariant mass distributions arising from MSSM cascade decays are likewise systematically considered with particular attention to their dependence on tau polarization. All possible tau-lepton and tau-tau distributions are plotted using a semi-analytic model for hadronic one-prong taus. Algorithms for fitting tau-tau and tau-lepton distributions to data are suggested.

Polarized tops from new physics: signals and observables

Top quarks may be produced in large numbers in association with new physics at the LHC. The polarization of these top quarks probes the chiral structure of the new physics. We discuss several kinematic distributions which are sensitive to the polarization of single top quarks and can be used without full event reconstruction. For collimated tops we construct polarization-sensitive observables for both hadronic and leptonic decay modes and plot their distributions. We compute the observable polarization signals from top quarks produced in the on-shell cascade decay of a stop squark into a top quark and a neutralino, as well as top quarks produced in the analogous decay chain in same-spin partner models.

Warping and Supersymmetry Breaking

We analyze supersymmetry breaking by anti-self-dual flux in the deformed conifold. This theory has been argued to be a dual realization of susy breaking by antibranes. As such, one might expect it to lead to a hierarchically small breaking scale, but only if the warp factor is taken into account. We verify this by explicitly computing the warp-modified moduli space metric. This leads to a new term, with a power-like divergence at the conifold point, which lowers the breaking scale. We finally point out various puzzles regarding the gauge theory interpretation of these results.

Searching for Inflation in Simple String Theory Models: An Astrophysical Perspective

Attempts to connect string theory with astrophysical observation are hampered by a jargon barrier, where an intimidating profusion of orientifolds, Kahler potentials, etc. dissuades cosmologists from attempting to work out the astrophysical observables of specific string theory solutions from the recent literature. We attempt to help bridge this gap by giving a pedagogical exposition with detailed examples, aimed at astrophysicists and high energy theorists alike, of how to compute predictions for familiar cosmological parameters when starting with a 10-dimensional string theory action. This is done by investigating inflation in string theory, since inflation is the dominant paradigm for how early universe physics determines cosmological parameters. We analyze three explicit string models from the recent literature, each containing an infinite number of "vacuum" solutions. Our numerical investigation of some natural candidate inflatons, the so-called "moduli fields", fails to find inflation. We also find in the simplest models that, after suitable field redefinitions, vast numbers of these vacua differ only in an overall constant multiplying the effective inflaton potential, a difference which affects neither the potential's shape nor its ability to support slow-roll inflation. This illustrates that even having an infinite number of vacua does not guarantee having inflating ones. This may be an artifact of the simplicity of the models that we study. Instead, more complicated string theory models appear to be required, suggesting that explicitly identifying the inflating subset of the string landscape will be challenging.

Generalized Flux Vacua

We consider type II string theory compactified on a symmetric T^6/Z_2 orientifold. We study a general class of discrete deformations of the resulting four-dimensional supergravity theory, including gaugings arising from geometric and "nongeometric'' fluxes, as well as the usual R-R and NS-NS fluxes. Solving the equations of motion associated with the resulting N = 1 superpotential, we find parametrically controllable infinite families of supersymmetric vacua with all moduli stabilized. We also describe some aspects of the distribution of generic solutions to the SUSY equations of motion for this model, and note in particular the existence of an apparently infinite number of solutions in a finite range of the parameter space of the four-dimensional effective theory.

Nongeometric Flux Compactifications

We investigate a simple class of type II string compactifications which incorporate nongeometric "fluxes" in addition to "geometric flux" and the usual H-field and R-R fluxes. These compactifications are nongeometric analogues of the twisted torus. We develop T-duality rules for NS-NS geometric and nongeometric fluxes, which we use to construct a superpotential for the dimensionally reduced four-dimensional theory. The resulting structure is invariant under T-duality, so that the distribution of vacua in the IIA and IIB theories is identical when nongeometric fluxes are included. This gives a concrete framework in which to investigate the possibility that generic string compactifications may be nongeometric in any duality frame. The framework developed in this paper also provides some concrete hints for how mirror symmetry can be generalized to compactifications with arbitrary H-flux, whose mirrors are generically nongeometric.

Closed Superstring Emission from Rolling Tachyon Backgrounds

We compute the lowest components of the Type II Ramond-Ramond boundary state for the tachyon profile $T (X) = λe ^{X ^ 0/\sqrt{2}}$ by direct path integral evaluation. The calculation is made possible by noting that the integrals involved in the requisite disk one-point functions reduce to integrals over the product group manifold $U (n)\times U (m)$. We further note that one-point functions of more general closed string operators in this background can also be related to $U (n)\times U (m)$ group integrals. Using this boundary state, we compute the closed string emission from a decaying unstable D$p$-brane of Type II string theory. We also discuss closed string emission from the tachyon profile $T (X) =λ\cosh (X ^ 0/\sqrt{2})$. We find in both cases that the total number of particles produced diverges for $p = 0$, while the energy radiated into closed string modes diverges for $p\leq 2$, in precise analogy to the bosonic case.

Tadpoles and Closed String Backgrounds in Open String Field Theory

We investigate the quantum structure of Witten's cubic open bosonic string field theory by computing the one-loop contribution to the open string tadpole using both oscillator and conformal field theory methods. We find divergences and a breakdown of BRST invariance in the tadpole diagram arising from tachyonic and massless closed string states, and we discuss ways of treating these problems. For a Dp-brane with sufficiently many transverse dimensions, the tadpole can be rendered finite by analytically continuing the closed string tachyon by hand; this diagram then naturally incorporates the (linearized) shift of the closed string background due to the presence of the brane. We observe that divergences at higher loops will doom any straightforward attempt at analyzing general quantum effects in bosonic open string field theory on a Dp-brane of any dimension, but our analysis does not uncover any potential obstacles to the existence of a sensible quantum open string field theory in the supersymmetric case.
