Symmetric topological complexity of projective and lens spaces

For real projective spaces, (a) the Euclidean immersion dimension, (b) the existence of axial maps, and (c) the topological complexity are known to be three facets of the same problem. But when it comes to embedding dimension, the classical work of Berrick, Feder and Gitler leaves a small indeterminacy when trying to identify the existence of Euclidean embeddings of these manifolds with the existence of symmetric axial maps. As an alternative we show that the symmetrized version of (c) captures, in a sharp way, the embedding problem. Extensions to the case of even torsion lens spaces and complex projective spaces are discussed.

Immersions of RP^{2^e-1}

We prove that RP^{2^e-1} can be immersed in R^{2^{e+1}-e-7} provided e>6. If e>13, this is 1 better than previously known immersions. Our method is primarily an induction on geometric dimension, with compatibility of liftings being a central issue.

Stellar Populations in Spiral Galaxies

We report preliminary results of the characterization of bulge and inner disk stellar populations for 8 nearby spiral galaxies using Gemini/GMOS. The long-slit spectra extend out to 1-2 disk scale lengths with S/N/Ang > 50. Two different model fitting techniques, absorption-line indices and full spectral synthesis, are found to weigh age, metallicity, and abundance ratios differently, but with careful attention to the data/model matching (resolution and flux calibration), we are able constrain real signatures of age and metallicity gradients in star-forming galaxies.

Empirical calibration of the λ4000 Åbreak

Empirical fitting functions, describing the behaviour of the λ4000 Åbreak, D_4000, in terms of effective temperature, metallicity and surface gravity, are presented. For this purpose, the break has been measured in 392 stars from the Lick/IDS Library. We have followed a very detailed error treatment in the reduction and fitting procedures, allowing for a reliable estimation of the break uncertainties. This calibration can be easily incorporated into stellar population models to provide accurate predictions of the break amplitude for, relatively old, composite systems.
