Single-pixel digital "ghost" holography

Since its discovery, the "ghost" diffraction phenomenon has emerged as a non-conventional technique for optical imaging with very promising advantages. However, extracting intensity and phase information of a structured and realistic object remains a challenge. Here, we show that a "ghost" hologram can be recorded with a single-pixel configuration by adapting concepts from standard digital holography. The presented homodyne scheme enables phase imaging with nanometric depth resolution, three-dimensional focusing ability, and shows high signal-to-noise ratio.

Fractal Generalized Zone Plates

The construction of fractal generalized zone plates (FraGZPs) from a set of periodic diffractive optical elements with circular symmetry is proposed. This allows us to increase the number of foci of a conventional fractal zone plate (FraZP), keeping the self-similarity property within the axial irradiance. The focusing properties of these fractal diffractive optical elements for points not only along but also in the close vicinity of the optical axis are investigated. In both cases analytical expressions for the irradiance are derived. Numerical simulations of the energetic efficiency of FraGZPs under plane wave illumination are carried out. In addition, some effects on the axial irradiance caused by the variation in area of their transparent rings are shown.

A unified approach to describe optical pulse generation by propagation of periodically phase-modulated CW laser light

The analysis of optical pulse generation by phase modulation of narrowband continuous-wave light, and subsequent propagation through a group-delay-dispersion circuit, is usually performed in terms of the so-called bunching parameter. This heuristic approach does not provide theoretical support for the electrooptic flat-top-pulse generation reported recently. Here, we perform a waveform synthesis in terms of the Fresnel images of the periodically phase-modulated input light. In particular, we demonstrate flat-top-pulse generation with a duty ratio of 50% at a quarter of the Talbot condition for the sinusoidal phase modulation. Finally, we propose a binary modulation format to generate a well-defined square-wave-type optical bit pattern.
