Nuclear surface energy solving Hartree-Fock equations with Gogny interactions using Lagrange mesh

Hartree Fock equations for finite range interactions in a slab of nuclear matter are presented and solved using an algorithm based on the Lagrange mesh method. This approach is faster and more efficient than the Numerov algorithm commonly used in the literature. Thanks to the improved numerical accuracy, we were able to perform calculations with sufficiently large boxes to minimize the impact of Friedel oscillations on the final results, achieving a precision on the surface energy within a few dozens of keV. Results are presented for several Gogny interactions that have not been previously discussed. In addition, the inclusion of the spin orbit term is examined, showing a net reduction of 1.2-1.9 MeV in the surface energy.

Nemotron-4 340B Technical Report

We release the Nemotron-4 340B model family, including Nemotron-4-340B-Base, Nemotron-4-340B-Instruct, and Nemotron-4-340B-Reward. Our models are open access under the NVIDIA Open Model License Agreement, a permissive model license that allows distribution, modification, and use of the models and its outputs. These models perform competitively to open access models on a wide range of evaluation benchmarks, and were sized to fit on a single DGX H100 with 8 GPUs when deployed in FP8 precision. We believe that the community can benefit from these models in various research studies and commercial applications, especially for generating synthetic data to train smaller language models. Notably, over 98% of data used in our model alignment process is synthetically generated, showcasing the effectiveness of these models in generating synthetic data. To further support open research and facilitate model development, we are also open-sourcing the synthetic data generation pipeline used in our model alignment process.

What Would Jiminy Cricket Do? Towards Agents That Behave Morally

When making everyday decisions, people are guided by their conscience, an internal sense of right and wrong. By contrast, artificial agents are currently not endowed with a moral sense. As a consequence, they may learn to behave immorally when trained on environments that ignore moral concerns, such as violent video games. With the advent of generally capable agents that pretrain on many environments, it will become necessary to mitigate inherited biases from environments that teach immoral behavior. To facilitate the development of agents that avoid causing wanton harm, we introduce Jiminy Cricket, an environment suite of 25 text-based adventure games with thousands of diverse, morally salient scenarios. By annotating every possible game state, the Jiminy Cricket environments robustly evaluate whether agents can act morally while maximizing reward. Using models with commonsense moral knowledge, we create an elementary artificial conscience that assesses and guides agents. In extensive experiments, we find that the artificial conscience approach can steer agents towards moral behavior without sacrificing performance.

Linear Response Theory with finite-range interactions

This review focuses on the calculation of infinite nuclear matter response functions using phenomenological finite-range interactions, equipped or not with tensor terms. These include Gogny and Nakada families, which are commonly used in the literature. Because of the finite-range, the main technical difficulty stems from the exchange terms of the particle-hole interaction. We first present results based on the so-called Landau and Landau-like approximations of the particle-hole interaction. Then, we review two methods which in principle provide numerically exact response functions. The first one is based on a multipolar expansion of both the particle-hole interaction and the particle-hole propagator and the second one consists in a continued fraction expansion of the response function. The numerical precision can be pushed to any degree of accuracy, but it is actually shown that two or three terms suffice to get converged results. Finally, we apply the formalism to the determination of possible finite-size instabilities induced by a finite-range interaction.

Design, Simulation, and Testing of a Flexible Actuated Spine for Quadruped Robots

Walking quadruped robots face challenges in positioning their feet and lifting their legs during gait cycles over uneven terrain. The robot Laika is under development as a quadruped with a flexible, actuated spine designed to assist with foot movement and balance during these gaits. This paper presents the first set of hardware designs for the spine of Laika, a physical prototype of those designs, and tests in both hardware and simulations that show the prototype's capabilities. Laika's spine is a tensegrity structure, used for its advantages with weight and force distribution, and represents the first working prototype of a tensegrity spine for a quadruped robot. The spine bends by adjusting the lengths of the cables that separate its vertebrae, and twists using an actuated rotating vertebra at its center. The current prototype of Laika has stiff legs attached to the spine, and is used as a test setup for evaluation of the spine itself. This work shows the advantages of Laika's spine by demonstrating the spine lifting each of the robot's four feet, both as a form of balancing and as a precursor for a walking gait. These foot motions, using specific combinations of bending and rotation movements of the spine, are measured in both simulation and hardware experiments. Hardware data are used to calibrate the simulations, such that the simulations can be used for control of balancing or gait cycles in the future. Future work will attach actuated legs to Laika's spine, and examine balancing and gait cycles when combined with leg movements.

Effects of spin-orbit interaction on nuclear response and neutrino mean free path

The effects of the spin-orbit component of the particle-hole interaction on nuclear response functions and neutrino mean free path are examined. A complete treatment of the full Skyrme interaction in the case of symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter is given. Numerical results for neutron matter are discussed. It is shown that the effects of the spin-orbit interaction remain small, even at momentum transfer larger than the Fermi momentum. The neutrino mean free paths are marginally affected.

Nuclear liquid-gas phase transition and supernovae evolution

It is shown that the large density fluctuations appearing at the onset of the first order nuclear liquid-gas phase transition can play an important role in the supernovae evolution. Due to these fluctuations, the neutrino gas may be trapped inside a thin layer of matter near the proto-neutron star surface. The resulting increase of pressure may induce strong particle ejection a few hundred milliseconds after the bounce of the collapse, contributing to the revival of the shock wave. The Hartree-Fock+RPA scheme, with a finite-range nucleon-nucleon effective interaction, is employed to estimate the effects of the neutrino trapping due to the strong density fluctuations, and to discuss qualitatively the consequences of the suggested new scenario.

Instabilities of infinite matter with effective Skyrme-type interactions

The stability of the equation of state predicted by Skyrme-type interactions is examined. We consider simultaneously symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter. The stability is defined by the inequalities that the Landau parameters must satisfy simultaneously. A systematic study is carried out to define interaction parameter domains where the inequalities are fulfilled. It is found that there is always a critical density $ρ_{cr}$ beyond which the system becomes unstable. The results indicate in which parameter regions one can find effective forces to describe correctly finite nuclei and give at the same time a stable equation of state up to densities of 3-4 times the saturation density of symmetric nuclear matter.
