The Practical Challenges of Active Learning: Lessons Learned from Live Experimentation

We tested in a live setting the use of active learning for selecting text sentences for human annotations used in training a Thai segmentation machine learning model. In our study, two concurrent annotated samples were constructed, one through random sampling of sentences from a text corpus, and the other through model-based scoring and ranking of sentences from the same corpus. In the course of the experiment, we observed the effect of significant changes to the learning environment which are likely to occur in real-world learning tasks. We describe how our active learning strategy interacted with these events and discuss other practical challenges encountered in using active learning in the live setting.

Autonomous Tissue Manipulation via Surgical Robot Using Learning Based Model Predictive Control

Tissue manipulation is a frequently used fundamental subtask of any surgical procedures, and in some cases it may require the involvement of a surgeon's assistant. The complex dynamics of soft tissue as an unstructured environment is one of the main challenges in any attempt to automate the manipulation of it via a surgical robotic system. Two AI learning based model predictive control algorithms using vision strategies are proposed and studied: (1) reinforcement learning and (2) learning from demonstration. Comparison of the performance of these AI algorithms in a simulation setting indicated that the learning from demonstration algorithm can boost the learning policy by initializing the predicted dynamics with given demonstrations. Furthermore, the learning from demonstration algorithm is implemented on a Raven IV surgical robotic system and successfully demonstrated feasibility of the proposed algorithm using an experimental approach. This study is part of a profound vision in which the role of a surgeon will be redefined as a pure decision maker whereas the vast majority of the manipulation will be conducted autonomously by a surgical robotic system. In this paper, we have proposed the spinor wave equation of free and non-free photon. On this basis, we given the spin operators and spin wave functions of photon, and calculated the wave function of photon in vacuum and medium. In addition, we have given the quantum Berry phase and Chern number with the photon wave function, which can be used to studied the quantum topological features of photon in one-dimensional period medium.

Nanoinstabilities of Cu2O porous nanostructured films as driven by nanocurvature effect and thermal activation effect

In this work, the instabilities at the nanoscale (i.e. nanoinstabilities) of triangular pyramids-like Cu2O porous nanostructured films (PNFs) are studied by heating treatments under different atmosphere and temperature. It is found that the nanoscale building triangular-pyramids turn round preferentially at the sharp angles and/or coalesce with their contacting ones by directional diffusion and plastic flow of atoms, which are driven by the nonuniformly-distributed surface nanocurvature. As a result, the triangular pyramids become quasi-sphere shape and the PNF evolves into a big, dense particles film. It is also observed that the heating or thermal activation effect efficiently promotes the reduction or oxidation of Cu2O pyramids and the crystallization or growth of the as-achieved Cu or CuO grains. The above physical and chemical instabilities or changes at the nanoscale of Cu2O PNFs can be well accounted for by the combined mechanism of nanocurvature effect and thermal activation effect. The nanocurvature effect can lower the energy barrier for the atom diffusion or plastic flow and lower the activation energy for the chemical reactions, while the thermal activation effect can supply the required kinetic energy or activation energy and make the atomic transportations and reactions kinetically possible. The findings reveal the evolution laws of morphology, crystal structure and composition of triangular pyramids-like Cu2O PNF during heating treatments, which can further be extended to other types of Cu2O PNFs. Also, the findings have important implications for the nanoinstabilities of Cu2O PNFs-based devices, especially those working at a high temperature.

Cu2O porous nanostructured films fabricated by positive bias sputtering deposition

In this work, the authors fabricated Cu2O porous nanostructured films (PNFs) on glass slide substrates by the newly developed positive bias deposition approach in a balanced magnetron sputtering (MS) system. It was found that the surface morphology, crystal structure and optical property of the as-deposited products were greatly dependent on the applied positive substrate bias. In particular, when the substrate was biased at +50 V and +150 V, both of the as-prepared Cu2O PNFs exhibited a unique triangular pyramids-like structure with obvious edges and corners and little gluing, a preferred orientation of (111) and a blue shift of energy band gap at 2.35 eV. Quantitative calculation results indicated that the traditional bombardment effects of electrons and sputtering argon ions were both negligible during the bias deposition in the balanced MS system. Instead, a new model of tip charging effect was further proposed to account for the controllable formation of PNFs by the balanced bias sputtering deposition.

State-of-the-art Chinese Word Segmentation with Bi-LSTMs

A wide variety of neural-network architectures have been proposed for the task of Chinese word segmentation. Surprisingly, we find that a bidirectional LSTM model, when combined with standard deep learning techniques and best practices, can achieve better accuracy on many of the popular datasets as compared to models based on more complex neural-network architectures. Furthermore, our error analysis shows that out-of-vocabulary words remain challenging for neural-network models, and many of the remaining errors are unlikely to be fixed through architecture changes. Instead, more effort should be made on exploring resources for further improvement.

The design of ultra-strong laser with one-dimensional function photonic crystal

With the optical kerr effect, the conventional photonic crystal can be turned into the function photonic crystal under the action of pump light. In the paper, we have designed the ultra-strong light source and laser with one-dimensional function photonic crystal. When the incident light is the ordinary light, the output is ultra-strong light source, and when the incident light is the low power laser, the output is ultra-strong laser, the maximum magnification can be reached $10^{80}$ and even more. Otherwise, we analyzed the effect of period number, medium refractive index and thickness, incident angle, the pump light irradiation way and pump light intensity on the magnification, these results shall help to optimal design ultra-strong light source and laser.

State power and elite autonomy in a networked civil society: The board interlocking of Chinese non-profits

In response to failures of central planning, the Chinese government has experimented not only with free-market trade zones, but with allowing non-profit foundations to operate in a decentralized fashion. A network study shows how these foundations have connected together by sharing board members, in a structural parallel to what is seen in corporations in the United States and Europe. This board interlocking leads to the emergence of an elite group with privileged network positions. While the presence of government officials on non-profit boards is widespread, government officials are much less common in a subgroup of foundations that control just over half of all revenue in the network. This subgroup, associated with business elites, not only enjoys higher levels of within-elite links, but even preferentially excludes government officials from the NGOs with higher degree. The emergence of this structurally autonomous sphere is associated with major political and social events in the state-society relationship. Cluster analysis reveals multiple internal components within this sphere that share similar levels of network influence. Rather than a core-periphery structure centered around government officials, the Chinese non-profit world appears to be a multipolar one of distinct elite groups, many of which achieve high levels of independence from direct government control.

Natural Language Processing with Small Feed-Forward Networks

We show that small and shallow feed-forward neural networks can achieve near state-of-the-art results on a range of unstructured and structured language processing tasks while being considerably cheaper in memory and computational requirements than deep recurrent models. Motivated by resource-constrained environments like mobile phones, we showcase simple techniques for obtaining such small neural network models, and investigate different tradeoffs when deciding how to allocate a small memory budget.

With the Jaynes-Cummings model, we have studied the atom and light field quantum entanglement of multiphoton transition, and researched the effect of initial state superposition coefficient $C_{1}$, the transition photon number $N$, the quantum discord $δ$ and the nonlinear coefficient $χ$ on the quantum entanglement degrees. We have given the quantum entanglement degrees curves with time evolution, and obtained some results, which should have been used in quantum computing and quantum information.

SyntaxNet Models for the CoNLL 2017 Shared Task

We describe a baseline dependency parsing system for the CoNLL2017 Shared Task. This system, which we call "ParseySaurus," uses the DRAGNN framework [Kong et al, 2017] to combine transition-based recurrent parsing and tagging with character-based word representations. On the v1.3 Universal Dependencies Treebanks, the new system outpeforms the publicly available, state-of-the-art "Parsey's Cousins" models by 3.47% absolute Labeled Accuracy Score (LAS) across 52 treebanks.

A new varied-time photonic crystals

In this paper, we have firstly proposed a new one-dimensional varied-time photonic crystals, i.e., the refractive indices of media $A$ and $B$ are the time functions. We consider the varied-time photonic crystals of refractive indices period variation and calculate the transmissivity and electronic field distribution with and without defect layer, which are different from the conventional photonic crystals, which transmissivity and electronic field distribution are static, but the varied-time photonic crystals transmissivity and electronic field distribution are dynamic. We have obtained some new results for the varied-time photonic crystals, which should be help to design new type dynamic optical devices, such as the accurate optical switch and so on.

Entanglement dynamics of electrons and photons

Entanglement is a fundamental feature of quantum theory as well as a key resource for quantum computing and quantum communication, but the entanglement mechanism has not been found at present. We think when the two subsystems exist interaction directly or indirectly, they can be in entanglement state. such as, in the Jaynes-Cummings model, the entanglement between an atom and light field comes from their interaction. In this paper, we have studied the entanglement mechanism of electron-electron and photon-photon, which are from the spin-spin interaction. We found their total entanglement states are relevant both space state and spin state. When two electrons or two photons are far away, their entanglement states should be disappeared even if their spin state is entangled.

We find the band gaps of two-dimensional function photonic crystals are different from the two-dimensional conventional photonic crystals, and when the functions form of dielectric constants are different, the band gaps structure should be changed, which can be designed into the appropriate band gaps structures by the two-dimensional function photonic crystals.

Quantum entanglement degrees amplifier

The quantum entangled degrees of entangled states become smaller with the transmission distance increasing, how to keep the purity of quantum entangled states is the puzzle in quantum communication. In the paper, we have designed a new type entanglement degrees amplifier by one-dimensional photonic crystal, which is similar as the relay station of classical electromagnetic communication. We find when the entangled states of two-photon and three-photon pass through photonic crystal, their entanglement degrees can be magnified, which make the entanglement states can be long range propagation and the quantum communication can be really realized.
