Steering visible Dyakonov surface waves at the hyperbolic metasurface

Dyakonov surface wave existing at the interface with anisotropy offers a promising way of guiding light in two-dimension with almost no loss. However, predicted decades ago, the experimental demonstration of the Dyakonov surface wave seems always challenging for the weak anisotropic indices from the natural materials. Here we experimentally demonstrated a Dyakonov surface wave mode propagating in a hyperbolic metasurface at the visible frequency. Dyakonov surface waves at the two surfaces of the metasurface can be supported simultaneously by the hyperbolic anisotropy and form a Dyakonov typed mode with low loss and a large allowed angle band. A detailed theoretical analysis and numerical simulations prove that the electric field of such a surface wave mode shows transverse spin, whose direction is determined by the orientations of the hyperbolic anisotropy and surface normal, based on which we experimentally observed the photonic spin Hall effect of the surface wave mode in our metasurface.

Burst-Error Propagation Suppression for Decision-Feedback Equalizer in Field-Trial Submarine Fiber-Optic Communications

In this paper, we present a field-trial C-band 72Gbit/s optical on-off keying (OOK) system over 18.8km dispersion-uncompensated submarine optical cable in the South China Sea. Chromatic dispersion (CD) of 18.8km submarine optical cable causes four spectral nulls on the 36GHz bandwidth of 72Gbit/s OOK signal, which is the main obstacle for achieving an acceptable bit-error-rate (BER) performance. Decision feedback equalizer (DFE) is effective to compensate for the spectral nulls. However, DFE has a serious defect of burst-error propagation when the burst errors emerge due to the unstable submarine environment. Weighted DFE (WDFE) can be used to mitigate the burst-error propagation, but it cannot fully compensate for the spectral nulls because only a part of feedback symbols is directly decided. Fortunately, maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) can be added after the WDFE to simultaneously eliminate the resisting spectral distortions and implement optimal detection. Compared to the joint DFE and MLSE algorithm, the joint WDFE and MLSE algorithm can effectively suppress the burst-error propagation to obtain a maximum 2.9dB improvement of $\boldsymbol{Q}$ factor and eliminate the phenomenon of BER floor. In conclusion, the joint WDFE and MLSE algorithm can solve the burst-error propagation for the field-trial fiber-optic communications.

Fixed-State Log-MAP Detection for Intensity-Modulation and Direct-Detection Optical Systems over Dispersion-Uncompensated Links

In this paper, an optimized detection based on log-maximum a posteriori estimation with the fixed number of surviving states (fixed-state Log-MAP) is proposed to cooperate with equalizers to deal with the spectral distortions caused by limited bandwidth and chromatic dispersion for intensity-modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) optical systems. The equalizers compensates the spectral distortions and optimized detection decodes the useful bits from the noise. For accurately extracting the bits from more serious noise, the optimized detection with larger memory length is required. However, the classical optimized detection such as maximum likelihood-sequence estimation (MLSE) requires exponential-growing computational complexity and storage with the increasing memory length. The fixed-state Log-MAP detection can decrease the computational complexity and storage from the exponential order to linear order. Therefore, the fixed-state Log-MAP detection can compensate more distortions compared to MLSE under the same hardware condition. We experimentally verify the fixed-state Log-MAP detection in a C-band 64 Gbit/s IM/DD on-off keying optical system over a 100 km dispersion-uncompensated link. Under the same hardware condition, the fixed-state Log-MAP detection has a 2 dB improvement of receiver sensitivity compared to MLSE. In conclusion, the fixed-state Log-MAP detection shows the potential for practical IM/DD optical systems.

Content-Aware Unsupervised Deep Homography Estimation

Homography estimation is a basic image alignment method in many applications. It is usually conducted by extracting and matching sparse feature points, which are error-prone in low-light and low-texture images. On the other hand, previous deep homography approaches use either synthetic images for supervised learning or aerial images for unsupervised learning, both ignoring the importance of handling depth disparities and moving objects in real world applications. To overcome these problems, in this work we propose an unsupervised deep homography method with a new architecture design. In the spirit of the RANSAC procedure in traditional methods, we specifically learn an outlier mask to only select reliable regions for homography estimation. We calculate loss with respect to our learned deep features instead of directly comparing image content as did previously. To achieve the unsupervised training, we also formulate a novel triplet loss customized for our network. We verify our method by conducting comprehensive comparisons on a new dataset that covers a wide range of scenes with varying degrees of difficulties for the task. Experimental results reveal that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art including deep solutions and feature-based solutions.

Direct observation of energy band attraction effect in non-Hermitian systems

The energy band attraction (EBA) caused by the non-orthogonal eigenvectors is a unique phenomenon in the non-Hermitian (NH) system. However, restricted by the required tight-binding approximation and meticulously engineered complex potentials, such effect has not been experimentally demonstrated. Here, an experimentally verifiable model is proposed based on the photonic counterpart of the all-dielectric Mie-resonator lattice in a parallel-plate transmission line. Through theoretical derivation, we directly connect the transmission spectra with eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the NH Hamiltonians. By precisely tuning the resonance loss of the Mie-resonators, the evolution of the EBA effect in two-level NH systems, from gapped bands, gapless bands to flat bands, is directly observed for the first time. Furthermore, such effect can be extended to a graphene-like two-dimensional NH system. Our works show a metamaterial approach towards NH topological photonics and offer a deeper understanding of band theory in open systems.

Adaptive Channel-Matched Detection for C-Band 64-Gbit/s Optical OOK System over 100-km Dispersion-Uncompensated Link

In this paper, we propose adaptive channel-matched detection (ACMD) for C-band 64-Gbit/s intensity-modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) optical on-off keying (OOK) system over a 100-km dispersion-uncompensated link. The proposed ACMD can adaptively compensate most of the link distortions based on channel and noise characteristics, which includes a polynomial nonlinear equalizer (PNLE), a decision feedback equalizer (DFE) and maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE). Based on the channel characteristics, PNLE eliminates the linear and nonlinear distortions, while the followed DFE compensates the spectral nulls caused by chromatic dispersion. Finally, based on the noise characteristics, a post filter can whiten the noise for implementing optimal signal detection using MLSE. To the best of our knowledge, we present a record C-band 64-Gbit/s IM/DD optical OOK system over a 100 km dispersion-uncompensated link achieving 7\% hard-decision forward error correction limit using only the proposed ACMD at the receiver side. In conclusion, ACMD-based C-band 64-Gbit/s optical OOK system shows great potential for future optical interconnects.

Sphere Decoder with Box Optimization for FTN Non-orthogonal FDM System

In 1975, the pioneering work of J. E. Mazo showed the potential faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) gain of single-carrier binary signal. If the inter-symbol interference is eliminated by an optimal detector, the FTN single-carrier binary signal can transmit 24.7% more bits than the Nyquist signal without any loss of bit error rate performance, which is known as the Mazo limit. In this paper, we apply sphere decoder (SD) with box optimization (BO) to reduce inter-carrier interference (ICI) in FTN non-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (FTN-NOFDM) system. Compared with the conventional SD, SD with BO can achieve the same performance to reduce ICI, but its average number of expanded nodes in search process is significantly decreased especially for high-order modulation format, which can reduce the complexity of the receiver. When the bandwidth compression factor $α$ is set to 0.802, the transmission rate of QPSK-modulated FTN-NOFDM is 24.7% faster than the Nyquist rate, and it has almost the same performance as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), which agrees well with the Mazo limit. The QPSK-modulated FTN-NOFDM with $α$ equal to 0.5 (the spectral efficiency is 4 bit/s/Hz) outperforms 16QAM-modulated OFDM by about 1.5 dB. The 16QAM-modulated FTN-NOFDM with $α$ equal to 0.67 and 0.5 (the spectral efficiency is 6 bit/s/Hz and 8 bit/s/Hz, respectively) outperforms 64QAM-modulated and 256QAM-modulated OFDM by about 1.5 dB and 2 dB, respectively. Therefore, FTN-NOFDM will be a promising modulation scheme for the future bandwidth-limited wireless communications.

BGD-based Adam algorithm for time-domain equalizer in PAM-based optical interconnects

To the best of our knowledge, for the first time, we propose adaptive moment estimation (Adam) algorithm based on batch gradient descent (BGD) to design a time-domain equalizer (TDE) for PAM-based optical interconnects. Adam algorithm has been widely applied in the fields of artificial intelligence. For TDE, BGD-based Adam algorithm can obtain globally optimal tap coefficients without being trapped in locally optimal tap coefficients. Therefore, fast and stable convergence can be achieved by BGD-based Adam algorithm with low mean square error. Meanwhile, BGD-based Adam algorithm is implemented by parallel processing, which is more efficient than conventional serial algorithms, such as least mean square and recursive least square algorithms. The experimental results demonstrate that BGD-based Adam feed-forward equalizer works well in 120-Gbit/s PAM8 optical interconnects. In conclusion, BGD-based Adam algorithm shows great potential for converging the tap coefficients of TDE in future optical interconnects.

Controllable selective coupling of Dyakonov surface wave at liquid crystal based interface

Highly directional and lossless surface wave has significant potential applications in the two-dimensional photonic circuits and devices. Here we experimentally demonstrate a selective Dyakonov surface wave coupling at the interface between a transparent polycarbonate material and nematic liquid crystal 5CB. By controlling the anisotropy of the nematic liquid crystal with an applied magnetic field, a single ray at a certain incident angle from a diverged incident beam can be selectively coupled into surface wave. The implementation of this property may lead to a new generation of on-chip integrated optics and two-dimensional photonic devices.

Simultaneous Manipulation of Electric and Thermal Fields via Combination of Passive and Active Schemes

Increasing attention has been focused on the invisibility cloak due to its novel concept for manipulation of physical field. However, it is usually realized by single scheme (namely passive or active scheme) and limited in a single field. Here, we proposed a general method to achieve simultaneous manipulation of multi-physics field via combination of passive and active schemes. Experimentally, this method was demonstrated by simultaneous manipulation of electric field and thermal field. Firstly, a device was designed to simultaneously behave as electric and thermal invisibility cloak. Secondly, another device was demonstrated to simultaneously behave as electric invisibility cloak and thermal concentrator. The experimental results agree well with the simulated ones, confirming the feasibility of our method. Our method can also be extended to the other multi-physics fields, which would create much more freedom to design of new system and might enable new potential application in broad areas.

Adjustment of electric field intensity by dielectric metamolecule hybridization model

In this paper, we report on achieving hybridization effect in a Mie-based dielectric metamolecule and provide their physically intuitive picture. The hybridization results in the splitting of the initial overlapping resonance dips, thus leading to two new collective resonance modes. It can be observed via the displacement electric field distribution that the two modes behave as the in-phase and out-of-phase oscillation of two meta-atoms, thus enhancing and diminishing the intensity of electric field at the gap between two meta-atoms. Moreover, since the two hybridized modes are caused by the interaction effect, the enhancement amplitude can be adjusted by several coupling factors, like gap distances and spot positions. Taking advantage of the two collective modes of the dielectric metamolecule, certain locations in the metamolecule can be applied as heating zones in microwave band and signal amplifier or shielding zones in communication fields.

Light Absorption Coefficients of Ionic Liquids under Electric Field

Ionic liquids have attracted a lot of research attention for their applications in novel optoelectronic structures and devices as an optical means of regulating electricity. Although the electro-optic effect of ionic liquids is mentioned in some literature, a quantitative testing and analysis are hardly found in light absorption coefficients of ionic liquids under an electric field. In the present study, an experimental apparatus was designed to measure the absorption coefficients of ionic liquids under different electric fields. Five groups of imidazole ionic liquids were experimentally investigated and an inversion was performed to determine the spectral absorption coefficients of the imidazole ionic liquids under electric fields. Different intensities with multiple interface refractions and reflections were also considered, and the various measurement errors were analyzed through uncertainties propagation analysis. Spectral absorption of ionic liquids from 300 nm to 2500 nm was obtained and the absorption coefficients were retrieved. It was found that the absorption behavior of ionic liquids changed in some frequency bands under an applied electric field. The experimental results showed that the absorption coefficient of the ionic liquid increases with the voltage at 1520nm and 1920nm. The change rate was affected by the types of anions and cations in the ionic liquid and the diffusion rate of the ions therein. This study provides illustrations for the ionic liquid-based electro-optical regulation in terms of physical property parameters and the testing technique.

Artificial Nonlinearity Generated from Electromagnetic Coupling Meta-molecule

A purely artificial mechanism for optical nonlinearity is proposed based on a metamaterial route. The mechanism is derived from classical electromagnetic interaction in a meta-molecule consisting of a cut-wire meta-atom nested within a split-ring meta-atom. Induced by the localized magnetic field in the split-ring meta-atom, the magnetic force drives an anharmonic oscillation of free electrons in the cut-wire meta-atom, generating an intrinsically nonlinear electromagnetic response. An explicit physical process of a second-order nonlinear behavior is adequately described, which is perfectly demonstrated with a series of numerical simulations. Instead of "borrowing" from natural nonlinear materials, this novel mechanism of optical nonlinearity is artificially dominated by the meta-molecule geometry and possesses unprecedented design freedom, offering fascinating possibilities to the research and application of nonlinear optics.

An Improved Diversity Combining Receiver for Layered ACO-FOFDM in IM/DD Systems

In this paper, an improved receiver based on diversity combining is proposed to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of layered asymmetrically clipped optical fast orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-FOFDM) for intensity-modulated and direct-detected (IM/DD) optical transmission systems. Layered ACO-FOFDM can compensate the weakness of traditional ACO-FOFDM in low spectral efficiency, the utilization of discrete cosine transform in FOFDM system instead of fast Fourier transform in OFDM system can reduce the computational complexity without any influence on BER performance. The BER performances of layered ACO-FOFDM system with improved receiver based on diversity combining and DC-offset FOFDM (DCO-FOFDM) system with optimal DC-bias are compared at the same spectral efficiency. Simulation results show that under different optical bit energy to noise power ratios, layered ACO-FOFDM system with improved receiver has 2.86dB, 5.26dB and 5.72dB BER performance advantages at forward error correction limit over DCO-FOFDM system when the spectral efficiencies are 1 bit/s/Hz, 2 bits/s/Hz and 3 bits/s/Hz, respectively. Layered ACO-FOFDM system with improved receiver based on diversity combining is suitable for application in the adaptive IM/DD systems with zero DC-bias.

Faster-than-Nyquist Non-Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing for Visible Light Communications

In this paper, we propose a faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) non-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (NOFDM) scheme for visible light communications (VLC) where the multiplexing/demultiplexing employs the inverse fractional cosine transform (IFrCT)/FrCT. Different to the common fractional Fourier transform-based NOFDM (FrFT-NOFDM) signal, FrCT-based NOFDM (FrCT-NOFDM) signal is real-valued which can be directly applied to the VLC systems without the expensive upconversion. Thus, FrCT-NOFDM is more suitable for the cost-sensitive VLC systems. Meanwhile, under the same transmission rate, FrCT-NOFDM signal occupies smaller bandwidth compared to OFDM signal. When the bandwidth compression factor $α$ is set to $0.8$, $20\%$ bandwidth saving can be obtained. Therefore, FrCT-NOFDM has higher spectral efficiency and suffers less high-frequency distortion compared to OFDM, which benefits the bandwidth-limited VLC systems. As the simulation results show, bit error rate (BER) performance of FrCT-NOFDM with $α$ of $0.9$ or $0.8$ is better than that of OFDM. Moreover, FrCT-NOFDM has a superior security performance. In conclusion, FrCT-NOFDM shows great potential for application in the future VLC systems.

Capacity limit for faster-than-Nyquist non-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing signaling

Faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signal achieves higher spectral efficiency and capacity compared to Nyquist signal due to its smaller pulse interval or narrower subcarrier spacing. Shannon limit typically defines the upper-limit capacity of Nyquist signal. To the best of our knowledge, the mathematical expression for the capacity limit of FTN non-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (NOFDM) signal is first demonstrated in this paper. The mathematical expression shows that FTN NOFDM signal has the potential to achieve a higher capacity limit compared to Nyquist signal. In this paper, we demonstrate the principle of FTN NOFDM by taking fractional cosine transform-based NOFDM (FrCT-NOFDM) for instance. FrCT-NOFDM is first proposed and implemented by both simulation and experiment. When the bandwidth compression factor $α$ is set to $0.8$ in FrCT-NOFDM, the subcarrier spacing is equal to $40\%$ of the symbol rate per subcarrier, thus the transmission rate is about $25\%$ faster than Nyquist rate. FTN NOFDM with higher capacity would be promising in the future communication systems, especially in the bandwidth-limited applications.

Fano Resonance in a Subwavelength Mie-based Metamolecule with Split Ring Resonator

In this letter, we report a method of symmetry-breaking in an artificial Mie-based metamolecule. A Fano resonance with a Q factor of 96 is observed at microwave frequencies in a structure combining a split ring resonator (SRR) and a high-permittivity dielectric cube. Calculations indicate resonant frequency tunability will result from altering the cube's permittivity. The asymmetric spectrum is attributed to both constructive and destructive near-field interactions between the two distinct resonators. Experimental data and simulation results are in good agreement. The underlying physics is seen in field distribution and dipole analysis. This work substantiates an approach for the manipulation of Mie resonances which can potentially be utilized in light modulating and sensing.

Bifunctional Metamaterials with Simultaneous and Independent Manipulation of Thermal and Electric Fields

Metamaterials offer a powerful way to manipulate a variety of physical fields ranging from wave fields (electromagnetic field, acoustic field, elastic wave, etc.), static fields (static magnetic field, static electric field) to diffusive fields (thermal field, diffusive mass). However, the relevant reports and studies are usually conducted on a single physical field or functionality. In this study, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a bifunctional metamaterial which can manipulate thermal and electric fields simultaneously and independently. Specifically, a composite with independently controllable thermal and electric conductivity was introduced, on the basis of which a bifunctional device capable of shielding thermal flux and concentrating electric current simultaneously was designed, fabricated and characterized. This work provides an encouraging example of metamaterials transcending their natural limitations, which offers a promising future in building a broad platform for manipulation of multi-physics field.
