Discrete cosine and sine transforms generalized to honeycomb lattice

The discrete cosine and sine transforms are generalized to a triangular fragment of the honeycomb lattice. The honeycomb point sets are constructed by subtracting the root lattice from the weight lattice points of the crystallographic root system $A_2$. The two-variable orbit functions of the Weyl group of $A_2$, discretized simultaneously on the weight and root lattices, induce a novel parametric family of extended Weyl orbit functions. The periodicity and von Neumann and Dirichlet boundary properties of the extended Weyl orbit functions are detailed. Three types of discrete complex Fourier-Weyl transforms and real-valued Hartley-Weyl transforms are described. Unitary transform matrices and interpolating behaviour of the discrete transforms are exemplified. Consequences of the developed discrete transforms for transversal eigenvibrations of the mechanical graphene model are discussed.

Dual-root lattice discretization of Weyl orbit functions

Four types of discrete transforms of Weyl orbit functions on the finite point sets are developed. The point sets are formed by intersections of the dual-root lattices with the fundamental domains of the affine Weyl groups. The finite sets of weights, labelling the orbit functions, obey symmetries of the dual extended affine Weyl groups. Fundamental domains of the dual extended affine Weyl groups are detailed in full generality. Identical cardinality of the point and weight sets is proved and explicit counting formulas for these cardinalities are derived. Discrete orthogonality of complex-valued Weyl and real-valued Hartley orbit functions over the point sets is established and the corresponding discrete Fourier-Weyl and Hartley-Weyl transforms are formulated.

On E-Discretization of Tori of Compact Simple Lie Groups: II

Ten types of discrete Fourier transforms of Weyl orbit functions are developed. Generalizing one-dimensional cosine, sine and exponential, each type of the Weyl orbit function represents an exponential symmetrized with respect to a subgroup of the Weyl group. Fundamental domains of even affine and dual even affine Weyl groups, governing the argument and label symmetries of the even orbit functions, are determined. The discrete orthogonality relations are formulated on finite sets of points from the refinements of the dual weight lattices. Explicit counting formulas for the number of points of the discrete transforms are deduced. Real-valued Hartley orbit functions are introduced and all ten types of the corresponding discrete Hartley transforms are detailed.

Weight-Lattice Discretization of Weyl-Orbit Functions

Weyl-orbit functions have been defined for each simple Lie algebra, and permit Fourier-like analysis on the fundamental region of the corresponding affine Weyl group. They have also been discretized, using a refinement of the coweight lattice, so that digitized data on the fundamental region can be Fourier-analyzed. The discretized orbit function has arguments that are redundant if related by the affine Weyl group, while its labels, the Weyl-orbit representatives, invoke the dual affine Weyl group. Here we discretize the orbit functions in a novel way, by using the weight lattice. A cleaner theory results, with symmetry between the arguments and labels of the discretized orbit functions. Orthogonality of the new discretized orbit functions is proved, and leads to the construction of unitary, symmetric matrices with Weyl-orbit-valued elements. For one type of orbit function, the matrix coincides with the Kac-Peterson modular $S$ matrix, important for Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten conformal field theory.

Cubature formulas of multivariate polynomials arising from symmetric orbit functions

The paper develops applications of symmetric orbit functions, known from irreducible representations of simple Lie groups, in numerical analysis. It is shown that these functions have remarkable properties which yield to cubature formulas, approximating a weighted integral of any function by a weighted finite sum of function values, in connection with any simple Lie group. The cubature formulas are specialized for simple Lie groups of rank two. An optimal approximation of any function by multivariate polynomials arising from symmetric orbit functions is discussed.

Invariants of Lie algebras

In this thesis new objects to the existing set of invariants of Lie algebras are added. These invariant characteristics are capable of describing the nilpotent parametric continuum of Lie algebras. The properties of these invariants, in view of possible alternative classifications of Lie algebras, are formulated and their behaviour on known lower--dimensional Lie algebras investigated. It is demonstrated that these invariants, in view of their application on graded contractions of sl(3,C), are also effective in higher dimensions. A necessary contraction criterion involving these invariants is derived and applied to lower--dimensional cases. Possible application of these invariant characteristics to Jordan algebras is investigated.

Discretized Weyl-orbit functions: modified multiplication and Galois symmetry

We note a remarkable similarity between the discretized Weyl-orbit functions and affine modular data associated with Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten (WZNW) conformal field theories. Known properties of the modular data are exploited here to uncover analogous results for the discretized orbit functions. We show that the product of orbit functions is modified in analogy with the truncation of tensor products known as affine fusion, governing the interactions in WZNW models. A Galois symmetry, like that of affine modular data, is also described for the discretized orbit functions.

Discrete transforms and orthogonal polynomials of (anti)symmetric multivariate cosine functions

The discrete cosine transforms of types V--VIII are generalized to the antisymmetric and symmetric multivariate discrete cosine transforms. Four families of discretely and continuously orthogonal Chebyshev-like polynomials corresponding to the antisymmetric and symmetric generalizations of cosine functions are introduced. Each family forms an orthogonal basis of the space of all polynomials with respect to some weighted integral. Cubature formulas, which correspond to these families of polynomials and which stem from the developed discrete cosine transforms, are derived. Examples of three-dimensional interpolation formulas and three-dimensional explicit forms of the polynomials are presented.

Generalized discrete orbit function transforms of affine Weyl groups

The affine Weyl groups with their corresponding four types of orbit functions are considered. Two independent admissible shifts, which preserve the symmetries of the weight and the dual weight lattices, are classified. Finite subsets of the shifted weight and the shifted dual weight lattices, which serve as a sampling grid and a set of labels of the orbit functions, respectively, are introduced. The complete sets of discretely orthogonal orbit functions over the sampling grids are found and the corresponding discrete Fourier transforms are formulated. The eight standard one-dimensional discrete cosine and sine transforms form special cases of the presented transforms.

Graded contractions of the Gell-Mann graded sl(3,C)

The Gell-Mann grading, one of the four gradings of sl(3,C) that cannot be further refined, is considered as the initial grading for the graded contraction procedure. Using the symmetries of the Gell-Mann grading, the system of contraction equations is reduced and solved. Each non-trivial solution of this system determines a Lie algebra which is not isomorphic to the original algebra sl(3,C). The resulting 53 contracted algebras are divided into two classes - the first is represented by the algebras which are also continuous Inonu-Wigner contractions, the second is formed by the discrete graded contractions.

Four families of Weyl group orbit functions of B_3 and C_3

The properties of the four families of special functions of three real variables, called here C-, S-, S^s- and S^l-functions, are studied. The S^s- and S^l-functions are considered in all details required for their exploitation in Fourier expansions of digital data, sampled on finite fragment of lattices of any density and of the 3D symmetry imposed by the weight lattices of B_3 and C_3 simple Lie algebras/groups. The continuous interpolations, which are induced by the discrete expansions, are exemplified and compared for some model functions.

On Discretization of Tori of Compact Simple Lie Groups II

The discrete orthogonality of special function families, called $C$- and $S$-functions, which are derived from the characters of compact simple Lie groups, is described in Hrivnák and Patera (2009 J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 42 385208). Here, the results of Hrivnák and Patera are extended to two additional recently discovered families of special functions, called $S^s-$ and $S^l-$functions. The main result is an explicit description of their pairwise discrete orthogonality within each family, when the functions are sampled on finite fragments $F^s_M$ and $F^l_M$ of a lattice in any dimension $n\geq2$ and of any density controlled by $M$, and of the symmetry of the weight lattice of any compact simple Lie group with two different lengths of roots.

Six types of $E-$functions of the Lie groups O(5) and G(2)

New families of $E$-functions are described in the context of the compact simple Lie groups O(5) and G(2). These functions of two real variables generalize the common exponential functions and for each group, only one family is currently found in the literature. All the families are fully characterized, their most important properties are described, namely their continuous and discrete orthogonalities and decompositions of their products.

On E-functions of Semisimple Lie Groups

We develop and describe continuous and discrete transforms of class functions on a compact semisimple, but not simple, Lie group $G$ as their expansions into series of special functions that are invariant under the action of the even subgroup of the Weyl group of $G$. We distinguish two cases of even Weyl groups -- one is the direct product of even Weyl groups of simple components of $G$, the second is the full even Weyl group of $G$. The problem is rather simple in two dimensions. It is much richer in dimensions greater than two -- we describe in detail $E-$transforms of semisimple Lie groups of rank 3.

Three variable exponential functions of the alternating group

New class of special functions of three real variables, based on the alternating subgroup of the permutation group $S_3$, is studied. These functions are used for Fourier-like expansion of digital data given on lattice of any density and general position. Such functions have only trivial analogs in one and two variables; a connection to the $E-$functions of $C_3$ is shown. Continuous interpolation of the three dimensional data is studied and exemplified.

On E-Discretization of Tori of Compact Simple Lie Groups

Three types of numerical data are provided for compact simple Lie groups $G$ of classical types and of any rank. This data is indispensable for Fourier-like expansions of multidimensional digital data into finite series of $E-$functions on the fundamental domain $F^{e}$. Firstly, we determine the number $|F^{e}_M|$ of points in $F^{e}$ from the lattice $P^{\vee}_M$, which is the refinement of the dual weight lattice $P^{\vee}$ of $G$ by a positive integer $M$. Secondly, we find the lowest set $Λ^{e}_M$ of the weights, specifying the maximal set of $E-$functions that are pairwise orthogonal on the point set $F^{e}_M$. Finally, we describe an efficient algorithm for finding the number of conjugate points to every point of $F^{e}_M$. Discrete $E-$transform, together with its continuous interpolation, is presented in full generality.

Two dimensional symmetric and antisymmetric generalizations of sine functions

Properties of 2-dimensional generalizations of sine functions that are symmetric or antisymmetric with respect to permutation of their two variables are described. It is shown that the functions are orthogonal when integrated over a finite region $F$ of the real Euclidean space, and that they are discretely orthogonal when summed up over a lattice of any density in $F$. Decomposability of the products of functions into their sums is shown by explicitly decomposing products of all types. The formalism is set up for Fourier-like expansions of digital data over 2-dimensional lattices in $F$. Continuous interpolation of digital data is studied.

Two-dimensional symmetric and antisymmetric generalizations of exponential and cosine functions

Properties of the four families of recently introduced special functions of two real variables, denoted here by $E^\pm$, and $\cos^\pm$, are studied. The superscripts $^+$ and $^-$ refer to the symmetric and antisymmetric functions respectively. The functions are considered in all details required for their exploitation in Fourier expansions of digital data, sampled on square grids of any density and for general position of the grid in the real plane relative to the lattice defined by the underlying group theory. Quality of continuous interpolation, resulting from the discrete expansions, is studied, exemplified and compared for some model functions.
