Structure of Clifford groups of composite finite quantum systems

In this paper the Clifford groups of general multipartite quantum systems with configuration space $\mathbb{Z}_{n_1}\oplus\cdots\oplus\mathbb{Z}_{n_k}$, $k\geq 1$ are studied. It is known that the Clifford group is a natural semidirect product provided the dimension $N=n_1\cdots n_k$ of the corresponding Hilbert space is an odd number. For even $N$ special results on the Clifford groups are scattered in the mathematical literature, but they do not concern the semidirect product structure. Using the relation of generators of the associated symplectic group $\mathrm{Sp}_{[n_1,\dots,n_k]}$ we prove that for even $N=n_1\cdots n_k$ both Clifford group and the projective Clifford group are natural semidirect products if and only if $N$ is not divisible by four.

Clifford group is not a semidirect product in dimensions $N$ divisible by four

The paper is devoted to projective Clifford groups of quantum $N$-dimensional systems. Clearly, Clifford gates allow only the simplest quantum computations which can be simulated on a classical computer (Gottesmann-Knill theorem). However, it may serve as a cornerstone of full quantum computation. As to its group structure it is well-known that -- in $N$-dimensional quantum mechanics -- the Clifford group is a natural semidirect product provided the dimension $N$ is an odd number. For even $N$ special results on the Clifford groups are scattered in the mathematical literature, but they don't concern the semidirect structure. Using appropriate group presentation of $SL(2,Z_N)$ it is proved that for even $N$ projective Clifford groups are not natural semidirect products if and only if $N$ is divisible by four.

On representations of Lie algebras compatible with a grading

The paper extends existing Lie algebra representation theory related to Lie algebra gradings. The notion of a representation compatible with a given grading is defined and applied to finite-dimensional representations of $sl(n,\mathbb{C})$ in relation with its $\mathbb{Z}_2$-gradings. For representation theory of $sl(n,\mathbb{C})$ the Gel'fand-Tseitlin method turned out very effective.
