A Quantum-Inspired Algorithm for the Factorized Form of Unitary Coupled Cluster Theory

The factorized form of unitary coupled cluster theory (UCC) is a promising wave-function ansatz for the variational quantum eigensolver algorithm. Here, we present a quantum inspired algorithm for UCC based on an exact operator identity for the individual UCC factors. We implement this algorithm for calculations of the H$_{10}$ linear chain and the H$_2$O molecule with single and double $ζ$ basis sets to provide insights about UCC as a wave-function ansatz. We find that as an electronic structure method, UCC could potentially be valuable for strongly correlated systems, for which conventional coupled cluster theory has difficulties. On quantum computers, the factorized form of UCC can also serve as an initial state preparation method for the quantum phase-estimation algorithm, since it yields higher overlap with the ground state than many other common variational ansatzes. This classical algorithm for UCC also enables widespread testing of the technique, which will be useful for benchmarking quantum computations.

Type-I superconductivity in noncentrosymmetric NbGe$_{2}$

Single crystals of NbGe$_{2}$ which crystallize in a noncentrosymmetric hexagonal structure with chirality are synthesized and their superconductivity is investigated. Type-I superconductivity is confirmed by dc magnetization, field-induced second-to first-order phase transition in specific heat, and a small Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ_{GL}=0.12$. The isothermal magnetization measurements show that there is a crossover from type-I to type-II/1 superconductivity with decreasing temperature and an unusually enhanced surface superconducting critical field ($H_{c3}$) is discovered. The band structure calculations indicate the presence of Kramer-Weyl nodes near the Fermi level. These observations demonstrate that NbGe$_{2}$ is an interesting and rare example involving the possible interplay of type-I superconductivity, noncentrosymmetric structure and topological properties.

Ensemble Node Embeddings using Tensor Decomposition: A Case-Study on DeepWalk

Node embeddings have been attracting increasing attention during the past years. In this context, we propose a new ensemble node embedding approach, called TenSemble2Vec, by first generating multiple embeddings using the existing techniques and taking them as multiview data input of the state-of-art tensor decomposition model namely PARAFAC2 to learn the shared lower-dimensional representations of the nodes. Contrary to other embedding methods, our TenSemble2Vec takes advantage of the complementary information from different methods or the same method with different hyper-parameters, which bypasses the challenge of choosing models. Extensive tests using real-world data validates the efficiency of the proposed method.

Recent developments in the PySCF program package

PYSCF is a Python-based general-purpose electronic structure platform that both supports first-principles simulations of molecules and solids, as well as accelerates the development of new methodology and complex computational workflows. The present paper explains the design and philosophy behind PYSCF that enables it to meet these twin objectives. With several case studies, we show how users can easily implement their own methods using PYSCF as a development environment. We then summarize the capabilities of PYSCF for molecular and solid-state simulations. Finally, we describe the growing ecosystem of projects that use PYSCF across the domains of quantum chemistry, materials science, machine learning and quantum information science.

Three Jahn-Teller states of matter in the spin-crossover system Mn(taa)

Three high-spin phases recently discovered in the spin-crossover system Mn(taa) are identified through analysis by a combination of first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo simulation as a low-temperature Jahn-Teller ordered (solid) phase, an intermediate-temperature dynamically correlated (liquid) phase, and an uncorrelated (gas) phase. In particular, the Jahn-Teller liquid phase arises from competition between mixing with low-spin impurities, which drive the disorder, and inter-molecular strain interactions. The latter are a key factor in both the spin-crossover phase transition and the magnetoelectric coupling. Jahn-Teller liquids may exist in other spin-crossover materials and materials that have multiple equivalent Jahn-Teller axes.

Boundary Guidance Hierarchical Network for Real-Time Tongue Segmentation

Automated tongue image segmentation in tongue images is a challenging task for two reasons: 1) there are many pathological details on the tongue surface, which affect the extraction of the boundary; 2) the shapes of the tongues captured from various persons (with different diseases) are quite different. To deal with the challenge, a novel end-to-end Boundary Guidance Hierarchical Network (BGHNet) with a new hybrid loss is proposed in this paper. In the new approach, firstly Context Feature Encoder Module (CFEM) is built upon the bottomup pathway to confront with the shrinkage of the receptive field. Secondly, a novel hierarchical recurrent feature fusion module (HRFFM) is adopt to progressively and hierarchically refine object maps to recover image details by integrating local context information. Finally, the proposed hybrid loss in a four hierarchy-pixel, patch, map and boundary guides the network to effectively segment the tongue regions and accurate tongue boundaries. BGHNet is applied to a set of tongue images. The experimental results suggest that the proposed approach can achieve the latest tongue segmentation performance. And in the meantime, the lightweight network contains only 15.45M parameters and performs only 11.22GFLOPS.

Better Captioning with Sequence-Level Exploration

Sequence-level learning objective has been widely used in captioning tasks to achieve the state-of-the-art performance for many models. In this objective, the model is trained by the reward on the quality of its generated captions (sequence-level). In this work, we show the limitation of the current sequence-level learning objective for captioning tasks from both theory and empirical result. In theory, we show that the current objective is equivalent to only optimizing the precision side of the caption set generated by the model and therefore overlooks the recall side. Empirical result shows that the model trained by this objective tends to get lower score on the recall side. We propose to add a sequence-level exploration term to the current objective to boost recall. It guides the model to explore more plausible captions in the training. In this way, the proposed objective takes both the precision and recall sides of generated captions into account. Experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed method on both video and image captioning datasets.

Decoherence in Molecular Electron Spin Qubits: Insights from Quantum Many-Body Simulations

Quantum states are described by wave functions whose phases cannot be directly measured, but which play a vital role in quantum effects such as interference and entanglement. The loss of the relative phase information, termed decoherence, arises from the interactions between a quantum system and its environment. Decoherence is perhaps the biggest obstacle on the path to reliable quantum computing. Here we show that decoherence occurs even in an isolated molecule although not all phase information is lost via a theoretical study of a central electron spin qubit interacting with nearby nuclear spins in prototypical magnetic molecules. The residual coherence, which is molecule-dependent, provides a microscopic rationalization for the nuclear spin diffusion barrier proposed to explain experiments. The contribution of nearby molecules to the decoherence has a non-trivial dependence on separation, peaking at intermediate distances. Molecules that are far away only affect the long-time behavior. Because the residual coherence is simple to calculate and correlates well with the coherence time, it can be used as a descriptor for coherence in magnetic molecules. This work will help establish design principles for enhancing coherence in molecular spin qubits and serve to motivate further theoretical work.

Improving Captioning for Low-Resource Languages by Cycle Consistency

Improving the captioning performance on low-resource languages by leveraging English caption datasets has received increasing research interest in recent years. Existing works mainly fall into two categories: translation-based and alignment-based approaches. In this paper, we propose to combine the merits of both approaches in one unified architecture. Specifically, we use a pre-trained English caption model to generate high-quality English captions, and then take both the image and generated English captions to generate low-resource language captions. We improve the captioning performance by adding the cycle consistency constraint on the cycle of image regions, English words, and low-resource language words. Moreover, our architecture has a flexible design which enables it to benefit from large monolingual English caption datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on common evaluation metrics. The attention visualization also shows that the proposed approach really improves the fine-grained alignment between words and image regions.

Average case tractability of additive random fields with Korobov kernels

We investigate average case tractability of approximation of additive random fields with marginal random processes corresponding to the Korobov kernels for the non-homogeneous case. We use the absolute error criterion (ABS) or the normalized error criterion (NOR). We show that the problem is always polynomially tractable for ABS or NOR, and give sufficient and necessary conditions for strong polynomial tractability for ABS or NOR.

The Cold and Dusty Circumstellar Matter around Fast-expanding Type Ia Supernovae

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) play key roles in revealing the accelerating expansion of the universe, but our knowledge about their progenitors is still very limited. Here we report the discovery of a rigid dichotomy in circumstellar (CS) environments around two subclasses of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) as defined by their distinct photospheric velocities. For the SNe Ia with high photospheric velocities (HV), we found a significant excess flux in blue light during 60-100 days past maximum, while this phenomenon is absent for SNe with normal photospheric velocity (Normal). This blue excess can be attributed to light echoes by circumstellar dust located at a distance of about 1-3x10^{17} cm from the HV subclass. Moreover, we also found that the HV SNe Ia show systematically evolving Na I absorption line by performing a systematic search of variable Na I absorption lines in spectra of all SNe Ia, whereas this evolution is rarely seen in Normal ones. The evolving Na I absorption can be modeled in terms of photoionization model, with the location of the gas clouds at a distance of about 2x10^{17} cm, in striking agreement with the location of CS dust inferred from B-band light curve excess. These observations show clearly that the progenitors of HV and Normal subclasses are systematically different, suggesting that they are likely from single and double degenerate progenitor systems, respectively.

Nonlinear Dimensionality Reduction for Discriminative Analytics of Multiple Datasets

Principal component analysis (PCA) is widely used for feature extraction and dimensionality reduction, with documented merits in diverse tasks involving high-dimensional data. Standard PCA copes with one dataset at a time, but it is challenged when it comes to analyzing multiple datasets jointly. In certain data science settings however, one is often interested in extracting the most discriminative information from one dataset of particular interest (a.k.a. target data) relative to the other(s) (a.k.a. background data). To this end, this paper puts forth a novel approach, termed discriminative (d) PCA, for such discriminative analytics of multiple datasets. Under certain conditions, dPCA is proved to be least-squares optimal in recovering the component vector unique to the target data relative to background data. To account for nonlinear data correlations, (linear) dPCA models for one or multiple background datasets are generalized through kernel-based learning. Interestingly, all dPCA variants admit an analytical solution obtainable with a single (generalized) eigenvalue decomposition. Finally, corroborating dimensionality reduction tests using both synthetic and real datasets are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Graph Multiview Canonical Correlation Analysis

Multiview canonical correlation analysis (MCCA) seeks latent low-dimensional representations encountered with multiview data of shared entities (a.k.a. common sources). However, existing MCCA approaches do not exploit the geometry of the common sources, which may be available \emph{a priori}, or can be constructed using certain domain knowledge. This prior information about the common sources can be encoded by a graph, and be invoked as a regularizer to enrich the maximum variance MCCA framework. In this context, the present paper's novel graph-regularized (G) MCCA approach minimizes the distance between the wanted canonical variables and the common low-dimensional representations, while accounting for graph-induced knowledge of the common sources. Relying on a function capturing the extent low-dimensional representations of the multiple views are similar, a generalization bound of GMCCA is established based on Rademacher's complexity. Tailored for setups where the number of data pairs is smaller than the data vector dimensions, a graph-regularized dual MCCA approach is also developed. To further deal with nonlinearities present in the data, graph-regularized kernel MCCA variants are put forward too. Interestingly, solutions of the graph-regularized linear, dual, and kernel MCCA, are all provided in terms of generalized eigenvalue decomposition. Several corroborating numerical tests using real datasets are provided to showcase the merits of the graph-regularized MCCA variants relative to several competing alternatives including MCCA, Laplacian-regularized MCCA, and (graph-regularized) PCA.

Tunable Electronic Structure and Topological Properties of $LnPn$ ($Ln$=Ce, Pr, Gd, Sm, Yb; $Pn$=Sb, Bi)

We have performed systematic first principles study of the electronic structure and band topology properties of $LnPn$ compounds ($Ln$=Ce, Pr, Gd, Sm, Yb; $Pn$=Sb, Bi). Assuming the $f$-electrons are well localized in these materials, both hybrid functional and modified Becke-Johnson calculations yield electronic structure in good agreement with experimental observations, while generalized gradient approximation calculations severely overestimate the band inversions. From Ce to Yb, a systematic reduction of band inversion with respect to the increasing $Ln$ atomic number is observed, and $\mathcal{Z}_2$ for Ce$Pn$ and Yb$Pn$ are [1;000] and [0;000], respectively. In both hybrid functional and modified Becke-Johns calculations, a topologically nontrivial to trivial transition is expected around SmSb for the antimonides and around DyBi for the bismuthides. Such variation is related with lanthanide contraction, but is different from simple pressure effect.

Intermolecular Coupling and Superconductivity in Chevrel Phase Compounds

To understand superconductivity in Chevrel phase compounds and guide the search for interesting properties in materials created with Chevrel phase molecules as building blocks, we use ab-initio methods to study the properties of single Mo$_6$X$_8$ molecules with $X=S$, $Se$, $Te$ as well as the bulk solid PbMo$_6$S$_8$. In bulk PbMo$_6$S$_8$, the different energy scales from strong to weak are: the band kinetic energy, the intra-molecular Coulomb interaction, the on-molecule Jahn-Teller energy and the Hund's exchange coupling. The metallic state is stable with respect to Mott and polaronic insulating states. The bulk compound is characterized by a strong electron-phonon interaction with the largest coupling involving phonon modes with energies in the range from 11 meV to 17 meV and with a strong inter-molecule (Peierls) character. A two-band Eliashberg equation analysis shows that the superconductivity is strong-coupling, with different gaps on the two Fermi surface sheets. A Bergman-Rainer analysis of the functioanl derivative of the transition temperature with respect to the electron-phonon coupling reveals that the Peierls modes provide the most important contribution to the superconductivity. This work illustrates the importance of inter-molecular coupling for collective phenomena in molecular solids.

PUF-AES-PUF: a novel PUF architecture against non-invasive attacks

In this letter, a physical unclonable function (PUF)-advanced encryption standard (AES)-PUF is proposed as a new PUF architecture by embedding an AES cryptographic circuit between two conventional PUF circuits to conceal their challenge-to-response pairs (CRPs) against machine learning attacks. Moreover, an internal confidential data is added to the secret key of the AES cryptographic circuit in the new PUF architecture to update the secret key in real-time against side-channel attacks. As shown in the results, even if 1 million number of data are enabled by the adversary to implement machine learning or side-channel attacks, the proposed PUF can not be cracked. By contrast, only 5,000 (1,000) number of data are sufficient to leak the confidential information of a conventional PUF via machine learning (side-channel) attacks.

Canonical Correlation Analysis of Datasets with a Common Source Graph

Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) is a powerful technique for discovering whether or not hidden sources are commonly present in two (or more) datasets. Its well-appreciated merits include dimensionality reduction, clustering, classification, feature selection, and data fusion. The standard CCA however, does not exploit the geometry of the common sources, which may be available from the given data or can be deduced from (cross-) correlations. In this paper, this extra information provided by the common sources generating the data is encoded in a graph, and is invoked as a graph regularizer. This leads to a novel graph-regularized CCA approach, that is termed graph (g) CCA. The novel gCCA accounts for the graph-induced knowledge of common sources, while minimizing the distance between the wanted canonical variables. Tailored for diverse practical settings where the number of data is smaller than the data vector dimensions, the dual formulation of gCCA is also developed. One such setting includes kernels that are incorporated to account for nonlinear data dependencies. The resultant graph-kernel (gk) CCA is also obtained in closed form. Finally, corroborating image classification tests over several real datasets are presented to showcase the merits of the novel linear, dual, and kernel approaches relative to competing alternatives.

Average Case $(s, t)$-weak tractability of non-homogenous tensor product problems

We study $d$-variate problem in the average case setting with respect to a zero-mean Gaussian measure. The covariance kernel of this Gaussian measure is a product of univariate kernels and satisfies some special properties. We study $(s, t)$-weak tractability of this multivariate problem, and obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for $s>0$ and $t\in(0,1)$. Our result can apply to the problems with covariance kernels corresponding to Euler and Wiener integrated processes, Korobov kernels, and analytic Korobov kernels.
