Superconductivity at 5 K in quasi-one-dimensional Cr-based KCr3As3 single crystals

Recently a new family of Cr-based A2Cr3As3 (A = K, Rb, Cs) superconductors were reported, which own a rare quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) crystal structure with infinite (Cr3As3)2- chains and exhibit intriguing superconducting characteristics possibly derived from spin-triplet electron pairing. The crystal structure of A2Cr3As3 is actually a slight variation of the hexagonal TlFe3Te3 prototype although they have different lattice symmetry. Here we report superconductivity in a 133-type KCr3As3 compound that belongs to the latter structure. The single crystals of KCr3As3 were prepared by the deintercalation of K ions from K2Cr3As3 crystals which were grown from a high-temperature solution growth method, and it owns a centrosymmetric lattice in contrast to the non-centrosymmetric K2Cr3As3. After annealing at a moderate temperature, the KCr3As3 crystals show bulk superconductivity at 5 K revealed by electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. The discovery of this KCr3As3 superconductor provides a different structural instance to study the exotic superconductivity in these Q1D Cr-based superconductors.

Discovery of a novel 112-type iron-pnictide and La-doping induced superconductivity in Eu1-xLaxFeAs2 (x = 0 ~ 0.15)

We report the discovery and characterization of a novel 112-type iron pnictide EuFeAs2, with La-doping induced superconductivity in a series of Eu1-xLaxFeAs2. The polycrystalline samples were synthesized through solid state reaction method only within a very narrow temperature window around 1073 K. Small single crystals were also grown from a flux method with the size about 100 um. The crystal structure was identified by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis as a monoclinic structure with space group of P21/m. From resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements, we found that the parent compound EuFeAs2 shows a Fe2+ related antiferromagnetic/structural phase transition near 110 K and a Eu2+ related antiferromagnetic phase transition near 40 K. La doping suppressed the both phase transitions and induced superconducting transition with a Tc ~ 11 K for Eu0.85La0.15FeAs2.

Superconductivity in the ternary iridium-arsenide BaIr2As2

Here we report the synthesis and discovery of superconductivity in a novel ternary iridium-arsenide compound BaIr2As2. The polycrystalline BaIr2As2 sample was synthesized by a high temperature and high pressure method. Crystal structural analysis indicates that BaIr2As2 crystallizes in the ThCr2Si2-type layered tetragonal structure with space group I4/mmm (No. 139), and the lattice parameters were refined to be a = 4.052(9) Å and c = 12.787(8) Å. By the electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements we found type-II superconductivity in the new BaIr2As2 compound with a Tc (critical temperature) of 2.45 K, and an upper critical field u0Hc2(0) about 0.2 T. Low temperature specific heat measurements gave a Debye temperature about 202 K and a distinct specific jump with delta Ce/γTc = 1.36, which is close to the value of BCS weak coupling limit and confirms the bulk superconductivity in this new BaIr2As2 compound.

Superconductivity at 7.8 K in the ternary LaRu2As2 compound

Here we report the discovery of superconductivity in the ternary LaRu2As2 compound. The polycrystalline LaRu2As2 samples were synthesized by the conventional solid state reaction method. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that LaRu2As2 crystallizes in the ThCr2Si2-type crystal structure with the space group I4/mmm (No. 139), and the refined lattice parameters are a = 4.182(6) Å and c = 10.590(3) Å. The temperature dependent resistivity measurement shows a clear superconducting transition with the onset Tc (critical temperature) at 7.8 K, and zero resistivity happens at 6.8 K. The upper critical field at zero temperature m0Hc2(0) was estimated to be 1.6 T from the resistivity measurement. DC magnetic susceptibility measurement shows a bulk superconducting Meissner transition at 7.0 K, and the isothermal magnetization measurement indicates that LaRu2As2 is a type-II superconductor.

Superconductivity in undoped CaFe2As2 single crystals

Single crystals of undoped CaFe2As2 were grown by a FeAs self-flux method, and the crystals were quenched in ice-water rapidly after high temperature growth. The quenched crystal undergoes a collapsed tetragonal structural phase transition around 80 K revealed by the temperature dependent X-ray diffraction measurements. Superconductivity below 25 K was observed in the collapsed phase by resistivity and magnetization measurements. The isothermal magnetization curve measured at 2 K indicates that this is a typical type-II superconductor. For comparison, we systematically characterized the properties of the furnace cooled, quenched, and post-annealed single crystals, and found strong internal crystallographic strain existing in the quenched samples, which is the key for the occurrence of superconductivity in the undoped CaFe2As2 single crystals.

Hippo: A Fast, yet Scalable, Database Indexing Approach

Even though existing database indexes (e.g., B+-Tree) speed up the query execution, they suffer from two main drawbacks: (1) A database index usually yields 5% to 15% additional storage overhead which results in non-ignorable dollar cost in big data scenarios especially when deployed on modern storage devices like Solid State Disk (SSD) or Non-Volatile Memory (NVM). (2) Maintaining a database index incurs high latency because the DBMS has to find and update those index pages affected by the underlying table changes. This paper proposes Hippo a fast, yet scalable, database indexing approach. Hippo only stores the pointers of disk pages along with light weight histogram-based summaries. The proposed structure significantly shrinks index storage and maintenance overhead without compromising much on query execution performance. Experiments, based on real Hippo implementation inside PostgreSQL 9.5, using the TPC-H benchmark show that Hippo achieves up to two orders of magnitude less storage space and up to three orders of magnitude less maintenance overhead than traditional database indexes, i.e., B+-Tree. Furthermore, the experiments also show that Hippo achieves comparable query execution performance to that of the B+-Tree for various selectivity factors.

Superconductivity at 3.85 K in BaPd2As2 with the ThCr2Si2-type structure

The single crystal of ThCr2Si2-type BaPd2As2 was successfully prepared by a self-flux method, and the crystal structure was characterized by X-ray diffraction method with the lattice parameters a = 4.489(2) Å and c = 10.322(3) Å. Bulk superconductivity below a Tc (critical temperature) of 3.85 K was revealed in this compound by the measurements of resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat, and this Tc is much higher than those of other isostructural Pd-based superconductors.

Enhanced superconductivity in F-doped LaO1-xFxBiSSe

The layered compound LaOBiSSe was successfully synthesized by a two-step solid-state reaction method, which is isostructural with the quaternary compound LaOBiS2 indicated by the powder X-ray diffraction characterization, and the crystal lattice parameters are slightly expanded by the substitution of Se atoms. Electrical transport measurement shows that LaOBiSSe exhibits semiconducting behavior similar with the parent compound LaOBiS2, while by F-doping the samples can be much more easily turned to be metallic and superconducting at low temperature with a small amount of F. Under the optimal carrier doping concentration of F ~ 0.5, the superconducting critical temperature of LaO0.5F0.5BiSSe is clearly enhanced up to a value of 3.8 K than the 3.2 K of LaO0.5F0.5BiS2.

Overdetermined Shooting Methods for Computing Standing Water Waves with Spectral Accuracy

A high-performance shooting algorithm is developed to compute time-periodic solutions of the free-surface Euler equations with spectral accuracy in double and quadruple precision. The method is used to study resonance and its effect on standing water waves. We identify new nucleation mechanisms in which isolated large-amplitude solutions, and closed loops of such solutions, suddenly exist for depths below a critical threshold. We also study degenerate and secondary bifurcations related to Wilton's ripples in the traveling case, and explore the breakdown of self-similarity at the crests of extreme standing waves. In shallow water, we find that standing waves take the form of counter-propagating solitary waves that repeatedly collide quasi-elastically. In deep water with surface tension, we find that standing waves resemble counter-propagating depression waves. We also discuss existence and non-uniqueness of solutions, and smooth versus erratic dependence of Fourier modes on wave amplitude and fluid depth. In the numerical method, robustness is achieved by posing the problem as an overdetermined nonlinear system and using either adjoint-based minimization techniques or a quadratically convergent trust-region method to minimize the objective function. Accuracy is maintained using spectral collocation with optional mesh refinement in space, a high order Runge-Kutta or spectral deferred correction method in time, and quadruple-precision for improved navigation of delicate regions of parameter space as well as validation of double-precision results. Implementation issues for GPU acceleration are briefly discussed, and the performance of the algorithm is tested for a number of hardware configurations.

A local construction of the Smith normal form of a matrix polynomial

We present an algorithm for computing a Smith form with multipliers of a regular matrix polynomial over a field. This algorithm differs from previous ones in that it computes a local Smith form for each irreducible factor in the determinant separately and then combines them into a global Smith form, whereas other algorithms apply a sequence of unimodular row and column operations to the original matrix. The performance of the algorithm in exact arithmetic is reported for several test cases.

Assertion-Based Design Exploration of DVS in Network Processor Architectures

With the scaling of technology and higher requirements on performance and functionality, power dissipation is becoming one of the major design considerations in the development of network processors. In this paper, we use an assertion-based methodology for system-level power/performance analysis to study two dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) techniques, traffic-based DVS and execution-based DVS, in a network processor model. Using the automatically generated distribution analyzers, we analyze the power and performance distributions and study their trade-offs for the two DVS policies with different parameter settings such as threshold values and window sizes. We discuss the optimal configurations of the two DVS policies under different design requirements. By a set of experiments, we show that the assertion-based trace analysis methodology is an efficient tool that can help a designer easily compare and study optimal architectural configurations in a large design space.

A Taxonomy of Workflow Management Systems for Grid Computing

With the advent of Grid and application technologies, scientists and engineers are building more and more complex applications to manage and process large data sets, and execute scientific experiments on distributed resources. Such application scenarios require means for composing and executing complex workflows. Therefore, many efforts have been made towards the development of workflow management systems for Grid computing. In this paper, we propose a taxonomy that characterizes and classifies various approaches for building and executing workflows on Grids. We also survey several representative Grid workflow systems developed by various projects world-wide to demonstrate the comprehensiveness of the taxonomy. The taxonomy not only highlights the design and engineering similarities and differences of state-of-the-art in Grid workflow systems, but also identifies the areas that need further research.

Grid Market Directory: A Web Services based Grid Service Publication Directory

As Grids are emerging as the next generation service-oriented computing platforms, they need to support Grid economy that helps in the management of supply and demand for resources and offers an economic incentive for Grid resource providers. To enable this Grid economy, a market-like Grid environment including an infrastructure that supports the publication of services and their discovery is needed. As part of the Gridbus project, we proposed and have developed a Grid Market Directory (GMD) that serves as a registry for high-level service publication and discovery in Virtual Organisations.
